I am on a Rooted,Unlocked ICS .28 Prime with a NVFLash Backup, a TWRP 2.2 Nandroid Backup available along with a Titanium Pro backup, If I try a Custom ROM based on JB and don't like it or have a "mess up" will I be able to get back to where I am at the Moment with the Backups I have listed above?
Thanks

I tried before many times and it worked for me. Sometimes you might soft brick it so just use the first option in this tutorial and you should boot back into your rom with no problems.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514088
however if you want to go for the rom based on the official ASUS release by craig gomez then you might wanna try nvflash to go back to ICS.. otherwise you might brick it for good

I too was looking to the do the same. Especially since I see alot of complaining in the forums. My question is what is the purpose of the NVSFLASH. I been managing to flash every ok without it. Is it a zip I can just add and flash via CMW? Let me know ya luck on the JB ROMS..I tried a few prior to the update but waiting for a full JB Rom to flash without the ADB and fast boot crap..
Thanks

I am selling my two Asus Transformer Primes and would like to know the best way to restore them back to 'Like New' condition. I have unlocked, rooted, and flashed several different ROMs on each of them (one of them currently has Virtuoso and the other is running CM9). I know I cannot 're-lock' the bootloader but other than that, what is the best way to restore everything?
I have ViperMod to unroot them but I cannot seem to locate a a stock ICS ROM. Even better would be the last stock Gingerbread ROM so that I can flash to that and then OTA to the newest ICS update.
Anything else I need to do? I figure I would need to clear the caches and wipe in CWM...
Anything else I am forgetting?

Thanks for the link whycali, that was exactly what I was looking for. I've never flashed a multi-piece app/rom before; I assume I just download the two pieces and the kernel and flash them one at a time using CWM, clear caches, wipe, flash piece 1, flash piece 2, then flash the kernel, then reboot? I want it unrooted so I am going to use the unrooted files, but should I unroot with ViperMod first?
Why do you want to unroot too ? even if you return it to a stock(ish) rom you can never recieve asus updates, and whoever you sell it to should probs know that too.
flashing a stock rom will brick it, i'd recommend backing it up with NVFlash files and then putting a good custom rom on it. but like i say, whoever you sell it to needs to know it will never run like a stock prime.

I just want to get it as close to 'like-new' as possible. I know it will always be unlocked and I will definitely disclose that but in my experience, I have had much better success selling my old devices when I have restored them to 'like new' condition from a software perspective. I had both of them rooted and was loading custom ROMs with 10 minutes of the package coming in the mail but not everyone wants that from a device and restoring it gives people a 'blank slate' to do what they want with it.
What do you mean flashing a stock ROM will brick it? I can't go back to stock .28 ICS, rooted or unrooted?

Flashing a stock rom from asus will brick it. The one I sent you a link to is specifically tailored for unlocked devices.
Hi all,
Some background information, I was using team eos nightlies and I wanted to change the rom to see whether if others are any better, so i did cleared the cache/delvik cache and as well as did a factory wipe. Then i installed the the that I wanted to try out, the Energy rom, however, after flashing, I couldn't get past the asus spalsh screen, I can still go back to the twrp recovery though.
I tried flashing back my original team eos nightly.. and it booted without any problem.
Anyone knows if i'm missing any step to flashing a new rom?

Sounds to me like your on the older ICS bootloader and the other roms you've tried are using the JB bootloader (lucky you havnt bricked your device)
You need to upgrade the Bootloader first in order to install these roms but BEWARE, once you upgrade the bootloader, you cannot go back to the ICS bootloader or roms.
Unless you have backed up NVFlash and you restore your device/bootloader with NVFlash.
Now would be a good time to do your NVFlash backup if you havnt already, then go from there.

Ohhh is it. I don't remember anything about the bootloader so I just assumed that since I was on TeamEos JB nightlies, then I'm on JB bl.
I went to flash many other roms to tried too. Must've been really lucky then.
Thanks for the help, I'll go try it out.
Is this possible? The full details are I had my phone stolen, and got a new one with android 4.0.4 on it. I have on my computer a copy of my latest backup of my old cognition gingerbread rom. Can I just use CWM to recover to my old rom, or do i need to first downgrade to a gingerbread rom, and then recover?
Thankyou very much for assistance
Edit: Also, I don't actually want to use the old rom, I just need the contacts it saved, afterwards I'll wipe everything and install a clean ICS mod. In case there's any way of doing this without having to revert
You'll probably need to restore the backup with a version of CWM close to the one the backup was made with, you can often have problems restoring if you're using a CWM version a lot (say 12 mths or more) newer than the one you made the backup with.
So I'd probably go GB/with a rooted GB kernel first, restore the backup & go from there. I mean, it could work first try with an ICS kernel that's running a recent CWM build, but there's a fair chance it won't.
Edit - And be really careful with stock 4.0.4, don't do a wipe while you're running that.
Wow. I just... wow.
Ok, so I did the stupid thing and just tried to restore my old backup without doing proper downgrading first and it ended up soft bricking my machine, couldn't get recovery mode up, but I got into download mode. So I downloaded my country's stock gingerbread rom from samsung's site and flashed it with odin just to see what happens, and somehow my old rom was working again, and I have all my contacts and data. saved everything up to google, upgraded to ICS, import.
Everything went better than expected.
Thanks for the help
Told you Important thing is you managed to fix it yourself without asking silly questions in Q&A. Not many people seem to be able to do that these days.
Well done. I'm glad you got it sorted
Edit -You're welcome
Im on rooted stock(ICS .54) ROM on Xperia SoIa and had made a CWM backup. The back-up process took around 10 minutes. The size of the back-up folder was approximately 1.5GB. Just wanted to verify if the restore option is working properly or not so did a restore. And I waited.
Waited for more than an hour. And it got restored successfully.
I've done CWM backups and restores before on my old android phone(videocon zeus) and it never took longer than 10 minutes.
So I got a little worried when it was taking longer than 10 minutes. Is this normal?
I searched the forums but could'nt find proper answers or explanation.

It's quite normal mate since you have almost 1.5 gb of stuff. Using 6.0.28 version of cwm will ask even more time with backup and restore.

Okay! So it depends on how many apps are installed on the ROM mostly. So a factory reset and then backup of the stock ICS .54 ROM will be approximately what size any idea?

I recently rooted my Sola on stock ICS .54 version and I'm just clearing some doubts about it. And so I asked if I do a factory reset(which means only the factory apps and settings will be there as all or most downloaded apps will get deleted) what will be the size of the back up folder I make using CWM ?
Also this may sound silly but is there a chance to lose root if I factory reset(I remember I had this fear on my old phone also so I had nver done factory reset)? :silly:

1) The size should be 300mb if I am not wrong mate. But I think it's useless making a cwm for stock Rom since you can flash it via flashtool. Just my opinion though.
2) Factory reset will make you loose apps and data you installed, don't think will affect root.

Thank you for your answers!
For 1 ,My thoughts for doing that is that I should have a easy access back up of stock ICS on sd at all times. I don't mind if 300MB-400MB of my 8GB micro-sd card is used up by this back up. Because just in case something goes wrong while flashing something and if I am able to access CWM then I'll be able to easily solve my issues by restoring that ICS backup I had made. Is this right? I can do this right?

I am on stock ICS .54 with locked bootloader
I am trying different mods and ports these days.
I hope to flash some stable JB ROM eventually(since Sony is not going to make an official JB ROM for our phones).
Any suggestions if I should try out any ICS ROMs before unlocking bootloader for JB?

Sure 1.5GB Is a big size but CWM 6.0.28 backups and restores much faster cause it has another technique to backup the files 5.x.xx backups the System and the data in one package ( a System package, a data package...) and CWM 6.x.xx backups in a lot of small files (round 2000 files if you have a complete System of round 1.5GB). Hope it's right what I say
Hi there!
I'm a little frustrated as well: Last night, I wanted to install a new ROM and the only thing I got, was a bootloop.
However, I didn't want the ROM anymore and I was so lucky I had made a BackUp via CWM.
So now it's already the fourth time, I'm restoring the files (I had to fight with mismatched md5 too!).
Actually, the restoring process worked fast. I made an advanced restore: First boot, then cache, then system and last data.
Every restore were completed withouth errors.
So I rebooted the phone (Arc S) and now I'm waiting already for about 25 minutes already. It says only "Android is actualizing... / Starting Apps".
I have about 480 MB to restore. Is it normal that it takes sooooooo much time already - and it's still not done...???
Thanks in advance for a timely response!

I rooted my GT-P7510 US tablet about 3 years ago, and I'm overdue for an update. I'm running 3.1, a custom kernel -Task650 and Phantom's "In Paris v4" P7510UEKME. It's kernel version 2.6.36.4. I would like some advice on which os are most happy with and I would like to understand the process of what I have to flash i.e downgrade in order to upgrade? back to stock? Will this erase my files? What about my apps?

I use Titanium Backup.. to back up my apps and their data... just remember that if you back up system data you can't restore it on any rom but the one you made it on... but apps/app data can be installed from rom to rom.
A lot of the new roms require you to have an ICS bootloader. Pershoot has one you can download and flash/install with Odin. If you need it.
You will need an updated recovery... I use Infamous TWRP... it's a touch based recovery and in my opinion the best for this device..
As for you're other files.. you will need to backup them up on you're computer if you use Odin because I think it will format/wipe you're sdcard. You can also take the Titanium backup you made and put it on you're computer. If you have any questions just ask and I'll try to help.. Good Luck..
So after I backup my data on the sdcard partition,
1)I just need to choose stock ICS or JB and flash via Odin? I've heard performance isn't all that great with JB.
2) Use TWRP to install custom recovery. Are the ROM's pre-rooted?
Is this guide still up to date? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1807219
Is the file for the ICS 4.0.4 still current for ICS?

If you have a custom recovery now.. you can install TWRP recovery ( I suggest.. Infamous Twrp ) in that custom recovery via a zip file. If you don't have a custom recovery we can work on getting you one. .But I seen that you are rooted and running a custom rom and kernel so I would assume you have a custom recovery,...probably cwm.. I can tell you how.. easy as pie. But I think you need to find out if you have an ICS Bootloader.. You will need this if you plan on flashing an updated rom..
Don't use that guide you linked.. that rom is for the 3g tab.. could work but why chance it..
Find out about the bootloader and get back to me... I will give you a link to my dropbox. I have a zip with all you need to get rooted/running ics/and recovery.. if we need to go that route. I'm hoping you have an ICS bootloader and cwm recovery already. It will be a simple series of steps to get you an up to date recovery and then a rom of you're choice.
If this isn't the case you might have to flash a bootloader with Odin on windows or if you have an ICS bootloader but no recovery you will need to flash a recovery in Odin.

How to check for ICS bootloader
@lowpost99
Ok, I'm prepping for this right now while I wait to hear back from you. I'll take a backup with Titanium Backup, get any other files I want to keep off.
I have CWM 4.0.0.4, and I don't think I have an ICS bootloader as ICS wasn't out when I last rooted. How do you validate? I'm still up in the air about which rom to use, JB or ICS, so I'm still looking. But after reading the known issues for CM 10 8/25/13 at droidbasement.com it seems to read that the ICS bootloaders are only needed for the p4wifiUK, but doesn't mention p4wifi (GT-P7510) specifically. Is that meant to be inclusive of any p4wifi or only the UK version of the hardware. My 10.1 is a US model. Do I just need I need to use ODIN 1.85 to flash an updated recovery and the new CM10? Or are you certain that I'll need this ICS bootloader as well. Also before flash the new recovery, shouldn't I do a factory reset to just clean things up? I should be able to restore the apps with TB and get any other files back from my PC. Your opinion and advice are appreciated.
I had the most stable experience with pershoots cm 10.1 roms. If you are using the cwm recovery he compiles, you can even use the autoupdate feature of the official cm roms.
At the moment I am using an early version of 10.2 because the 10.1 rom had issues with the stock keyboard closing all the time on my P4.

JB 4.3 with CM10.2. and gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip. I've run into an issue with launching Titanium Backup now. I downloaded it from the play store, and the setting say to auto-create icons, but there's no icon to be found. It shows installed, and I've disabled HALO as well. I don't know how to manually place an icon on the home screens, because it doesen't appear in the app drawer. It must be my un-familiarity with ICS/JB vs HC. Any help is appreciated... I would like to restore my apps!
