[Q] Enabling 3 / 4G Hotspot - HTC Rezound

Hi Guys,
I have a (new to me) Rezound that has the latest Verizon / HTC version of ICS (4.0.3) on it . I would like to unlock the 3G / 4G Hotspot on it.
I've done some searching and read a lot of threads on the subject. The best I have found is a thread by SirGatez about a modified wifi-tether application. The downside is that it appears that I need to root my phone in order to make this application work. That leads me to my question:
Do I need root in order to unlock the Hotspot / Teathering? I previously had a DROID Incredible that was very easy to mod the Hotspot.
I have looked into Rooting and it seems very complicated. There are so many threads on the subject that it is a little overwhelming. I would rather not root if I don't need too.
Thank you for your help,
Scott

PDA-net is the only app that can tether without root. But that is only over USB. To do wifi, you need root then download any of the tether apps in the play store.

GrayTheWolf, thank you for your quick reply. Obviously not the answer I was looking for. I will go back to studying up on rooting.
Part of my concern about rooting is that most of the rooting threads were written before the release of ICS 4.0.3. Best I can tell, it makes a difference. I really need to find instructions that are not over my head. Very simple instructions for a noob like myself.
If you happen to know of such a thread, please let me know.
Thanks again,
Scott

Have you tried fox-fi from the market

htcdev.com to unlock your bootloader.. very easy. Here's the recovery thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339679
[Recovery] Amon Ra style vigor and then go from there there
sent from my s-off reZound rockin' viperRez Rom on global ICS firmware

Thank you pwned3 for suggesting foxfi. I tried it and it will not work on my Rezound. That would have been just to cool.
famouscollin, thank you for your reply. Unlocking the bootloader via htcdev.com? Is that what is called S-OFF (for off standard)? I thought that was only the first step to rooting my rezound. Is that all I need to do to get the WiFi hotspot working.
I'm going to do the bootloader unlock in a few minutes. But that brings me to another question:
I bought Titanium Backup so that I could back up my Rezound before making any changes. I have been using Backup Pro, but everyone on this forum seems to use Titanium. The problem is that Titanium tells me it won't work if not rooted. That seems to defeat the whole purpose of what I wanted it for. Will Titanium work after I unlock the bootloader? Sorry about all the questions.
You have a great forum going here, and I really appreciate all of your help. Seriously!
Scott

Titanium will work if you unlock boot loader and install superuser from amon ra.

no unlocking your bootloader and adding a custom recovery is your first step. that give you the ability to do everything your wanting to.. s-off is just another security measure. you can still do everything in unlocked s-on (for the most part) its just a lil more complicated doing it.
and as for titanium it will work after you unlock and get root.. but if your wanting to back up now thats your problem. unlocking your bootloader does a factory reset so your gonna wanna back stuff up before you unlock..

Thank you GrayTheWolf. I'm not sure what "amon ra" is (yes, I'm a complete noob). I will try doing search for it.

The VZW tethering thing you have to pay for.
To do tethering without paying you will need to be rooted and install a tethering app from the play store.

Famous - I'm so glad you thought to mention the "factory reset" thing. That totally sucks, I have spent many hours installing apps and setting up my Rezound to be the way I like it. Do I loose everything, including my gmail setup? I have some backup I made using MyBackup Pro that I can use to restore from. That leads me to two more questions: Will the restore undo the htcdev thing? And should I remove the SD card so it does not get erased?

as for your gmail youll jast have to log back in and let all contacts and email sync. apps and such youll have to do another way (such as the mybackupro thing you spoke of) and you need to do amonRa after you unlock.. the google.doc link i gave you is from my google drive its the PROPER superSU.zip you flash it in recovery after you insatll recovery (amonRa Recovery) itll give you root on your stock rom. then just boot the phone and open the superSU app it installed and accept the update... then install this app from the appstore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether&hl=en
once your that far open up the app, grant it permissions, change device profile to htc rezound(vigor), set-up method to Netd(master), dont enable wifi encription,go all the way down and make sure routing fix is checked.
all should be good. oh and an easy DUMB mistake even ive made...... make sure your 4g is on before you try to tether.. lol
EDIT: no once you unlock your unlocked til you lock again, restoring apps and syncing your gmail again wont back pedal that.. and as for your sd im pretty sure it doesnt wipe that but yes you could remove it to be safe.. i personall have like three extra ones for playing around, and my 32gb for all my backups, and stuff.

Unlock bootloader via HTCdev.com, flash amon ra, then flash the superuser zip.

You guys are great! Thank you so much for the help.
Do you think I need to worry about restoring with MyBackupPro after I unlock? With MyBackupPro, you can backup and restore applications, selecting each one you want to restore. You can also backup what they call "data". The categories for data are as follows:
Contacts
Call log
Bookmarks
SMS
MMS
System Settings
Android Home
Alarms
Dictionary
Calendar
Music PlayList
APN's
Apps Organizer (v1.5.15)Some of these are no-brainers, but I'm wondering if there are others that could screw with the unlock. I.E. I don't know what APN's are. And maybe restoring System Settings could be a problem.
What do you think? Is there any way the MyBackupPro restore can screw up the bootloader unlock?

No, it won't affect it.
The unlock is in your bootloader, which is waaaayyyy at the bottom of the accessibility list. APNs are Access Point Names or Nodes or something.

Great! Thank you.
Hey, I'm part way through the bootloader unlock. Do I need the SDK for Windows for what I'm trying to do?

yes if your on windows.. lol also you need to make sure you have the ability to unzip/extract zip files. i believe windows 7 has the ability built in. i helped a guy recently to soff, that was the only real issue he ran into..(i wouldnt doubt theres a work around if you cant unzip properly it would just seem to be a pain in the a**)

If you simply read a few instructions around here, you could do it in about ten minutes (including time reading) or less by yourself. It's so simple when you know what to do.

Funny! Made my morning.
Great idea to get a boy toy to do it for me, but I am married and he has no clue what to do on a computer
I actually do NOT know very much about what I am wanting to do, either but I have spent probably close to 100+ hours reading forums from various sites in the last few months trying to figure this out myself. I'm one of those that if I want something done I like to try to do it myself first! I have had a lot of fun trying to root, but now I am just getting very frustrated. Mainly I am getting aggravated that every time I try to download ANYTHING it almost always is a bad site or has viruses. Grrr.
For starters, which version of Android do you have installed? Go to Menu > Settings > About phone > Android version. (Is this an AT&T phone?)
Second, do you want to only root the phone but keep your current ROM and settings? Or are you wanting to install a custom ROM?
I am running version 2.1 with At&t and I am interested in using a new ROM, although, I will admit that I don't know anything about this or how to do it or which ROM I would even use.

http://www.unrevoked.com/#aria is a one-click root solution for Arias running 2.1. It will also install Clockwork Recovery, which is used to flash new ROMs. Seriously, it couldn't be easier.
Others might suggest you upgrade to 2.2, then use http://revolutionary.io/ to S-OFF the phone & install Clockwork. It's also a one-click solution, pretty easy to do but you do need to upgrade to the official 2.2 before you do it.
Either way you pick, it's really super easy, and you'll be amazed at just how much your Aria can do when it's set free. Mine just seems to get faster and more responsive with every update.

I just did that yesterday (I didn't have any choice as my phone came with android 2.2.2 and hboot 1.02 with S-ON) and evrythign went smothly, BUT clockwork that came with it did not work for me (I wanted to do a fullback before going further). I did follow the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159237 CWM 2.5 and install su and that worked great.
I would recommend getting 2.2 over 2.1 since I beleive it gives you the option to move apps to SD card among other cool things (important since Aria has such limited ROM. After root, I used Titanium backup to remove all the ATT bloatware I wasn't using and went form ~6mb of free space, to 45mb, and stoped bunch of process that I didn't use from running.
Not sure what custom ROM I would want at this point... My wife HTC Incredible has option to install out any apps outside of market, and wish mine had this (evern though it is rooted, I don't see that settings)

If you're otherwise happy with the AT&T 2.2.2 ROM, you might want to try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970272. It's just a modified version of the AT&T 2.2.2 ROM. A few notable features are
it allows you to install apps outside of the market
AT&T bloatware has been removed
the annoying "AT&T" text that shows up on top of the notification bar when you press Home or unlock the phone has been removed
already has root (su)
Besides that, it's basically the stock experience.
This was how I rooted mine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159237
I would suggest updating to 2.2 then running root.
This link (above) also has ClockWorkRecoveryMod, Which allows for easy
ROM changes. You can also backup and restore to previous ROMs if you do not
like the one you are using.

Aria S-OFF Succeeds, but CMR fails with UnRevoked and Revolutionary
No root. No recovery. No love.
I have a GSM Aria which I bought in Taiwan. I was getting ready to buy the XTC Clip to S-OFF my Aria with HBOOT 1.02, but I did another search and found Revolutionary. Yay! Thanks to the community for that.
Revolutionary throws no errors, but exits immediately after
Do you want to download (Internet connection required) and flash ClockworkMod Recovery? [Y/n] y
It appears nothing was downloaded. Rebooting the phone into HBOOT shows "Revolutionary!" implying that it worked, but choosing "recovery" leaves me with the normal HTC recovery -- no backup options or anything.
Userspace attempts to install ClockworkMod fail because I don't have root. Universal Androot fails to install root even though I have S-OFF.
I'm a little stuck and any advice would be helpful. This is going to be my first CM7 installation, and I'm not willing to do it without a backup.
Thanks in advance.

p.s. all work done from an Ubuntu 11.04 machine, but I have access to Win7 if needed.

[Q] How to Root HTC Rezound Using ZergRush Method

Has anyone had any success with this method and the HTC Rezound?
pretty sure the zerg rush method is how all the temp roots work. You can check the dev section.
is this temp or permanent?
and does it work on the HTC rezound?
thanks!
i just tried it and it says
cannot find the direct path specified.
what does that mean?
then it stops!
If you have the ota it will not work, you have to root through amon ra by booting to recovery, selecting the developer menu and clicking install su superuser. Then reboot and download superuser from the market. If you do not have the ota however the zergrush method will work.
so what does all that mean? what do i need?

First thing you need to do is see what version of the sofware is on your phone (Settings/About Phone). If it's 2.01.605.11 then you've the latest and greatest which means you could achieve root according to the previous info. If it's an earlier version then go here http://www.thedr1ver.com/2011/12/easy-1-click-htc-rezound-root.html and don't worry about the OTA.
Create a directory on the desktop and extract the files to it so it's easy to find.
Search the market for a backup program and backup to SD.
If memory serves the unlock will do a factory restore so it's back to the beginning on setup etc.
Its actually pretty hard to hurt your phone believe it or not. i know some of it sounds scary but its not that bad. First off go to settings, about phone, software information, and then more. If your build number is 2.01.605.11 you have the ota already and zergrush will not work. You need to unlock your boot loader via htc dev, install amon ra via fastboot, which there are several threads on. Once amon ra is installed, boot into recovery by holding volume down and power. select the developer menu and click install su & superuser. then reboot. after you reboot go to the market and download superuser. you will then be rooted. I know this sound confusing, i was in your same boat about a month ago cause this is my first htc phone. It really is pretty simple. If you have any other questions send me a pm and i will help you out.

If you want to back up first, you can back up some stuff with MyBackup but not all of the data. And for apps AppMonster is great. I have pro of both, don't remember what the difference is from free versions.
But if you are going to put a custom ROM on then you don't want to restore data from a different ROM anyway from what I've read.
ok
my software number is
1.02.605.6
am i behind the times? for just getting this!
LOL
what now?
Your phone has not taken the ota yet, so oneclickroot will work. However, just personal opinion but I would go to settings, software update and do the ota and then use the amon ra method.
---------- Post added at 12:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:03 PM ----------
Unlocking your bootloader does wipe the phone so if you want to save your apps I would back them up with something like mybackup from the market first.

When you get a new device, you should check the forums before doing much to it. In your case, you were better off not installing a bunch of software on your phone if you planned on Rooting in the first place.
You are better off starting with a blank phone, doing the OTA and then the root process. Then you wouldn't need to worry about time wasted before doing those steps.
While some users are having battery related issues, I would gather most are not. Using a new phone tends to use the battery more just because you are playing with it more.
Stock Root, for most people works just fine with the battery and taking normal common steps to reduce your battery usage. Other ROM's have issues, but you should check those threads specifically to see what works and what doesn't and what issues there are Before flashing them.
Then you don't need to do general help messages for issues that are not really all in one solutions.
Everything you are asking about is already covered in topics related to what you are asking.
ok---here's the story.....
i didn't lose everything!
in my haste i already had backed up it all anyway! DUH on ME!
sorry for that trouble!
it just didn't show and my go launcher but all was there! evidently just took a minute to all "pop" in!
I don't use other roms... i keep it simple! i just use go launcher & make it look all neat with custom icons, and all that good stuff, etc...!
i just want the root to clean off all the "crap-ware" and get my wireless tether.
very important to me!
so...what should i do now...that i have the update on it? will the update issues i am reading about be dealt with rooting it?
and what happens when the ICS is released? will i get it? lose root? and all that good stuff?
ugh!!!
maybe i'm thinking too much!
You need to unlock your bootloader via htcdev.com now in order to be able to install amon and root. Unlocking your bootloader is what wipes your phone. Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415615

And i dont have any of the issues alot of people are talking about having.

some explanations

Ok I recently got a tf201. I have finally decided 2 go for it and trying 2 get a custom rom.
Untill now (using a SGS) I needed 2 root the phone then get a custom kernel then apply the rom.
How is the procedure for a prime? I tried 2 root but shortly found out that i had the .21 update, Im guesing I can downgrade not sure.
does "unlock" = root?
can some1 clarify the process tree to get to a new rom?

You will have to unlock via the asus unlock tool (you can just google that and get it directly off of the Asus website). Then you will have to use Fastboot to flash CWM onto your device. From there the usual, back up the stock rom, and install any custom rom of your liking.

unlock tool from asus website. ok but can u explain 1 thing 2 me? if its on asus website why does it void your warranty? and root and unlock are different?
If you are planning to flash a custom rom, check out androwookie v1.2 its good.
Unlock gives you the ability to install a custom recovery e.g. cwm, you then use this to flash a pre-rooted rom. Root just means having access to the root directory. It enables access to features and functions that are normally made inaccessible.
Using the fastboot method is pretty simple and guides can be found easily. I just did it yesterday after having previously only rooted and installed cm 7+9 on my sgs2.
Thats my understanding anyway

It's just one of their stipulations. Most manufacturers are like that in regards to using their unlock tools.
Root = enhanced permissions to run apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer (if you're modifying anything in the/System directory), stuff like that.
Unlock = your bootloader is "unlocked," you can now put ClockworkMod recovery on your device, flash ROMs and kernels. These things can't be done while only being rooted.
I hope I cleared it up for you a bit

Unlocking doesn't instantly get you root, it just makes rooting a lot easier to do. Like they said, unlock, put CWM on it, flash a rooted ROM and bam, rooted. But correct, apps like Titanium won't work if you're only unlocked, you would need root.
As far as I know, unlocking just requires downloading the .apk from Asus' site, installing it and going through the prompts. It doesn't sound hard at all. I personally don't know the ins and outs of it, as I never unlocked my Prime, but that's all it really sounded like. Sounds pretty simple. I believe there's some videos on it on YouTube though.

No problem! And yep, the link in the first post is a great looking guide for unlocking. Nice and easy, step by step. And after you have unlocked, just download ROM Manager from the market and you can flash CWM through the app itself. From my understanding that's the easiest way to do it, at least. Sorry it's been a few days since I responded, I haven't really been checking out the Q&A section lately

Bootloader unlock:
Custom Kernel possible
Official updates impossible
Waranty impacted
CWM backups possible
Need to use community ROMs in future
improved but not great chance of recovering from bad ROM flash (really needs NVFLASH)
Rooted:
Now possible with firmwares up to .28
Permits write access to /system partition
Makes it easier to brick and block OTA updates
Should be reversable
Allows most tweaks to be applied except for replacing kernel (which is a prerequisite for some kernels)
Going to make this a FAQ I think...

Updated root method for evo 4g lte...beginning to end.

i need an easier way to do this. please give me instructions on what to do first....back up? how do i back up? unlock? down load regadmod? i feel like there are alot of good videos but they are not in order. regardless...ive watched a crap load and im really frustrated. still my phone works fine. its the same way it came out the box... i updated to the 1.22.651.3 710RD. i want the hot spot man....:silly:
You deserve to be flamed for not reading the forums. Everything is explained in there (admittedly, sometimes it's hard to find).
Regardless, some quick answers for you:
1) You can still root your phone with the OTA update, but only through HTCdev. Unfortunately, that means having to do a full wipe before you can root, which means you can't back up. If you want to root, you'll lose everything.
2) You can tether without rooting using FoxFi. The app itself was removed from the play store, but the "add-on" remains. Look in the add-on's description for a link to the full FoxFi .apk file.

What's the cons of Htcdev?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
I'll quote myself from the Q&A because I think this is the best I've ever explained the difference :
Racer Of All said:
Q: What is the difference between root, S-OFF and an unlocked bootloader?
A: regaw_leinad made an awesome post here that is a billion times better than my explanation. If you have time, read it -- you will learn a lot. Otherwise here's the summed up version:
S-OFF allows complete control over your device, it will grant you access to all NAND protected partitions on your device.
Unlocked Bootloader (through the HTCDev unlock) is a "lite" version of S-OFF, it will allow you to flash a recovery and through it, a custom ROM. Zips that are attempted to be flashed through the bootloader will still need to come from HTC.
Root is not related to the NAND partitions at all, instead it grants you complete control over the OS (Android) itself. It will let you write and edit any file you wish. This lets you run apps like Titanium Backup and Adblock that need to either access or edit system files.

If you want to know more check out the link up in the quote, he really goes into detail. Although it's important to note that with the new hboot, it limits what you can flash (for example you can't flash individual radio updates through bootloader anymore). Basically as long as you stay with the htboot your phone came with, there's not much difference. However if someone ever updates your phone on accident and you're S-ON, you're SOL, if you're S-Off you can always go back.
Also, OP it depends what you want to do, if you just want to root then just follow a root guide. If you want to root and S-Off do lazypanda s-off and then root. Backing up (using a nandroid backup) requires a custom recovery which requires either s-off or htcdev unlock. There's a nice compilation of these guides on djR3Z's thread here. Although if you're asking for help on this I recommend you only root the phone (if even that) until you become more knowledgeable about Android and the rooting or bootloader unlocking process. Also, take a peek at the Q&A thread that I put together if you get a chance it should answer quite a few questions.

No one deserves to be flamed. I dont blame a single person that posts repeated questions as I try and do search and get conflicting info, confusing info and so many root methods its hard to choose. They don't wanna wreck their phone or waste an hour trying a method that doesn't work.
I am glad to see you helped instead of stopping at the deserve to be flamed. FWIW.

Open / Exit Animations...Wake w/ Volume

Anyone else notice that the Open / Exit animations (zooming in when opening an app and zooming out when closing) don't work with any of the market launchers on this phone. Tried just about every launcher option out there, and it strikes me as odd. It's not that big deal, but I enjoy the effect. Anyone know a launcher where this works?
Also, does anyone know a way to wake the phone with the volume key? When I had my incredible 2 there were some lockscreen apps that did it, or stand-alone apps that would enable it as well, but I can't seem to find a way to do it on this phone. Any info would be great.
Thanks.

Any chance anyone knows a way to wifi-tether without root and without Verizon charging me more money to use the data that I've already paid for once?

Try FoxFi with the Proxy Add-on. It works well, but only with HTTP/HTTPS protocol. If you need something other than HTTP/HTTPS or can not use a proxy, you'll have to go with a wired USB tether.
hate that new shared data plan. It would end up costing me more money just to share data. I'll take a look at FoxFi thanks
By the way I wanted to say thanks for telling me about foxfi
I had tried it before even asking but it didn't work cause I didn't know about the adon but all works great now so thanks my man
I'm gonna revive this old thread I made a while ago and ask for help again lol
I ask a lot of simple questions on here, and I was trying to figure this out myself for once, but I'm driving myself crazy doing so
I can't seem to get the phone to wake up with the volume keys :/
I'm running stock here, and now that I have root, I know there must be some way to do this...

Thanks Andy this is great! I know on the Incredible 2 you had done something like this but the zip also removed the crosshairs from the status bar. Do you have any plans to make something like that for this device? If so, could it also remove that annoying "no wifi" icon that's on the top left of the status bar?

man how the **** does this stuff come so easy to you...I looked into it for so long
reading about android.policy.jar and a ton of other stuff and I could not figure it out
thank you man
Damn this didn't work for my phone
I think it has something to do with a guide I was following before I asked :/
I'm so stupid and didn't make a backup and I made a few changes
if anyone wants to help maybe you could upload a few files for me?
In system\usr\keylayout
if anyone would maybe upload:
Generic.kl
dummy_keypad.kl
h2w_headset.kl
keypad_8960.kl
the guide had me making a couple edits to those and it didn't work but im sure it's interfering with this
It didn't end up working for me either so it's probably not the changes you made
I can't post links so I sent you a pm.
thanks man, it's a shame it didn't work, but at least I'll be back to normal now
sorry guys, I think I forgot to edit one of the keylayouts.
new link will be up soon, once I test first
****, I just realized im on 4.0.3 and sense 4.0

Now that my bootloader is unlocked and im rooted, I can't update through an OTA can I?

no your best bet it to download the ROM.zip I pulled from the OTA and install the RUU through bootloader using the file I pulled.
here is the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947600
Pulled from my OP
INSTRUCTIONS
1) Download this - MD5 = 55023CC10B59FDEC0AAA6695C4CF83FB
2) rename to PJ53IMG.zip (make sure it's not named PJ53IMG.zip.zip...)
3) put the PJ53IMG.zip on the root of your SD-Card. (not in any folders)
4) reboot to bootloader
5) let the phone do its magic
6) enjoy Sense 4.1
7) smile.
P.S. - you need to re-lock your bootloader to to do, the command in fastboot is
Fastboot oem lock
then once you install the RUU through bootloader, make sure you have your Unlock_code.bin saved from the bootloader unlock (if not don't worry you can always get it back from the HTC-Dev unlock site
Code to re-lock once installed
reboot to bootloader get into fastboot mode
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

flash in recovery - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26383143/HTC Incredible 4G/2.17.605.2_Wake_on_vol_v2.0.zip
make sure you're on the new OTA ROM,
AND it will NOT work if you are NOT on Nit ROM based off the new OTA update.
if you are just rooted and with superuser you are on an odex ROM..
Nit's ROM is deodexed, which mean I can edit the appropriate smali files.
You will get better results from Nits ROM from stock anyway IMHO
here the ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933539
If you really don't want to run the ROM and want to stay on stock (which is no difference, it's just a pain to make MODs, and they usually have problems)
So, I suggest,
reboot to recovery,
1) make a nandroid
wipe,
2) factory reset
3) System
4) Cache
5) dalvik cache
6) install ROM, boot up the ROM,
reboot back to recovery, flash the .zip above, and profit
Ok, so I didn't want to completely reflash the rom and lose all my apps so I did something a little different
I flashed the stock recovery via fastboot which DID work
I accepted the OTA update, and it downloaded and began to install however it failed because I flashed the "Google Now Mod" that I had posted in another thread...
and I'm guessing it might fail because of the 3-button remap I flashed as well
is there any way around this? I would rather just accept the OTA and do it that way
