I am using a P506/THRIVE rooted with clockworkmod recovery. I have installed several P500 variant kernels & ROMS all of which have the same display issue when installed. Afaik everything else works great and I have done significant testing.
My question is to see if any devs would be willing to port over a stable kernel at the very least that would fix the display issues and allow for overclocking? At the most port over a custom ROM for us Thrive owners to use as well as a kernel.
I am coming from WebOS so my Android knowledge is minimal that and the fact that ATM I have minimal access to a PC has left me to ask someone else to do this else I would try to figure it out myself. From the small amount of information I was able to gain by installing different P500 kernels & ROMS I am under the impression that their isn't much difference between the P506/THRIVE and other P500 variants. This leads me to believe that a kernel port might be an easy & fast solution. The same is true for a ROM port which I am guessing is just a kernel issue anyway.
So please if their are any devs thy would be willing to give this a look I will assist in anyway needed and you would be making us Thrive users EXTREMELY Elated! Thanks in advance. ;-)

Did you install P500 CWM from Rom Manager? or some other version?
Do you have color problems only in recovery, or in the original AT&T rom as well?
I'd like to make experiments (e.g., a bloat-free deodexed version of the stock rom) but cannot start without first getting a nandroid backup.
I installed CWM using ROM Manager and selecting the LGP500 option.
The display is fine with stock ROM. When flashing a LGP500 kernel and or ROM the display goes into a non-color glitchy looking mode but everything else seems to work fine.
I have a nandroid backup of stock rom so pm me if you would like a link to it.

Have you tried to install a P500 rom with the stock P506 kernel?
As far as I get it, the only difference is one graphic driver.
Although we don't have kernel source (bad link on LG website), perhaps we could compare the kernel config (/proc/config.gz if I'm not mistaken) between stock P500 and P506 to see what is this different driver.
My P506 config.gz, decompressed, is attached below; if someone has a stock P500 config.gz I'd love to get it.
Do you have a P506 / THRIVE config.gz? And need a P500 or P509 config.gz to compare? I can't help with a non P506 variant but I can ask around and look
I'm sure with all the non P506 users lurking around someone can upload a stock one for us.
I believe LG changed the display on the P506 variant because att would not accept the touchscreen bug on the device. That would explain why the P500 / Thrive doesn't have the bug (or I haven't noticed it on mine anyway) and why att was the last of the major US carriers to get their own variant.
I believe the display used on the P506 has had to have been used on a different LG product which is what I am going to find out. That way we can recompile one of the custom P500 kernels with the new driver.
I will also try to get a copy of a stock P500 / P509 config.gz to link here for comparison.

I have a copy of the LG Ally kernel source and it runs off of the same adreno 200 with a 3.2 display of the same resolution as the P506. I wonder if there is any chance to compile a new kernel using the display driver in the ally source? Is it worth a try?
I am not sure how device drivers work for Android SoC is there specific drivers for every device even I'd they are utilizing the exact same hardware? I find it hard to believe considering webOS is not like this at all. I think this may be worth a try.

No need, I got the official sources off LG website today as they fixed the link.
Comparing the kernel configs of P500 and P506, the differences are:
- IPSEC/VPN/PPP support in P500
- Two framebuffer drivers (novatek and hitachi) in P506 rather than one (just hitachi), with runtime detection of hw. [CONFIG_FB_MSM_MDDI_NOVATEK_HVGA=y]
I think I'll be able to compile a version tomorrow or so. But could you please try flashing any 2.2.1 P500 rom without flashing its kernel and see if colors are OK? this would mean we just need a custom kernel and we're good to go with the plethora of P500 roms.
This is awesome news! I sent LG an email complaining about the broken link. I wonder of that had anything to do with the fix... Anyway I will run a backup now and flash a ROM without flashing the kernel. I will post results shortly. Thanks a lot for putting in the time and effort!

Sorry for not doing all these tests myself, this is my dad's phone and I can't take it away from him for too long
BTW, I wonder how Rom Manager knows the right partition to use when flashing the recovery; it's different on every phone model.
Is there an easy way to flash a rom without it touching the kernel? If so I can't figure it out. The only thing I can think of that would work is to prepare a flashable copy of my kernel flash a P500 rom then flash my backed up kernel. I just don't have access to a PC right now to do that.

So after some more research I have discovered that the partitions are different on the thrive and that's why the colors are messed up in recovery as well as when you flash a new rom using the cwm recovery. So before we can even begin to flash a new kernel / rom the cwm recovery will need to be ported.
This was taken from AndroidCentral forums concerning the Thrive.
( The partitions are in a different order for this phone than for other phones. For example, when I did my image pull of a clean, stock Thrive, I got the following mtd partitions: mtd0 = boot mtd1 = system mtd2 = recovery mtd3 = lgdrm mtd4 = splash mtd5 = FOTABIN mtd6 = FOTA mtd7 = misc mtd8 = cache mtd9 = userdata The two (unexpected) partitions, as far as order goes, were system and cache; at least, they are unexpectedly located at mtd1 and mtd8, respectively, as compared to their respective locations on the Optimus V (i.e., mtd7 and mtd2, respectively, on Optimus V). )

You can do one of two:
replace the boot.img inside the rom with the backed up boot.img, and then flash the rom; or
correct the installer script to skip flashing boot.img (and possibly remove it from the rom altogether).
I think the first option is easier as it only requires replacing one file in the zip file, and not changing the scripts within.

Actually, according to this post, the partitions in P500/P506 are exactly the same.
Definitely the colors issue has to do with the change in the kernel; I suspect recovery uses the same kernel as the rom, so once you flash a P500 rom with its kernel you get messed up colors everywhere.
Edit: recovery uses a separate kernel, so I don't understand why the CWM recovery has no color issues on your device.

Also when you flash a rom does it when you turn on the screen sometimes it doesn't display this might be the fact that I have a phoenix not a thrive
I don't have the stock rom (it should be v11e_00.kdz); I just have backups of the mtd partitions of my thrive.
But it'd be useful to verify that phoenix and thrive are similar by examining the difference in kernel configuration and partition table.

Hi,
I need some help, i flashed my optimus v to rodimus just now with ROMTOOLS, but it went to a black screen after a LG logo, i can go to recovery and I did flash the stock rom but the same thing happened, I also tried to change the bootanimation thinking that was the problem but it didnt fix it.
Oh and I reinstalled the stock rom this way:
recovery menu->install zip from sdcard->choose zip from sdcard->ROM.zip

There's a thread in here about that. I believe its something to do with a kernel issue between newer and older V's. Did you do a nandroid backup before you flashed? If so you should be fine

Therez no need to..just keep a copy of zip file in your SD..kernel involves no data saving so no need to backup..

I am from India, and using official stock rom v20c 2.3.3. I want to overclock my phone for playing lag free games. Can anyone suggest me how can I do.. what kernel i have to use so that I would not like to face battery drain, overheat, Problem with 3g or wifi, hotspot, tethering issues.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT before flashing custom kernel please tell me how to backup my official kernel.... so that if in case i will go back to the stock one.
Please share the link of custom kernel.

IMHO most stable kernel is paolo v5/v6, it overclocks quite good (with external app - e.g. No-frills), no problem with tethering (wifi or usb) or 3g. I think v5 has a little longer battery life.
To backup stock kernel you need to make nandroid backup (that creates backup of everything on your phone and in case of restoring, it will overwrite every change you made on phone since backup). To do that you need recovery (I'm using ClockworkMod Recovery, but there is also other recovery somewhere in our P500 thread).
Recovery is also needed to install new kernel. There is short guide how to do that in kernel thread (you need to install downloaded zip). New kernel doesn't wipe your msgs, contacts or apps if you made no mistakes.
Custom kernels do few things: fixes bugs made by lg, boost phone performance (different kernels give more or less boost), unlocks overclocking, changing governors (controls CPU clock transitions, and therefore battery life and smoothness) and scheduler (i have too little knowledge about android to say, what it should do, but i observed no difference between schedulers), gives you better battery life, fix touch lag (but not multitouch inversion lag bug).
You should try Paolo's and Franco's kernels and choose which one fits you better. Franco's need app to use wifi tethering but is faster than Paolo's.
I experienced more restarts on paolo's v6 and franco's than on v5 (my favourite so far, but there is also new paolo's based kernel that I haven't tested yet).

Hey Indian user, don't be afraid of flashing Kernel, you can always change it.. and I went twice to service centre with CWM 5.2.0... OC-480-729... franco's .35 kernel ... and they didn't came to know anything... but if you give them a phone with custom ROM then the'll reject it..

Firstly i have to download adb n install over my xp based pc..
Secondly in adb i have to run adb push command for sending the database file to the phn...

Is it true that after installing cw recovry n custom kernel we cant do a kdz stock flash..... Confirm me that after having custom kernel.. it should not lead the phone in non detecting position.. n if kdz works n can remove both kernel n cw recovery too then i think this is much easier ... i had seen a lot of post that o1 bricked by kdz flashing gb.... so if it possible then i have decided to flash froyo first n then update the phone via pc suite.... help me.... plzzz

yes if u flashed a cutom kernel a custom recovery or a custom rom you can use kdz just turn on the usb debugging mode in setting>application>development to flash official stock froyo or official gb.. by using kdz method everything will be reverted back to stock recovery, kernel, rom, everything.. i suggest you to firstly flash the stock froyo using kdz method so you will be psychologically satisfied that you can go to stock

So my little brother has an optimus T. And I wanna customize it now that we got the SD card to read. Since it's not my phone its hard to dig through all the info here. I understand rooting this device. I'm wondering which recovery you reccomend? I want to go with cwm but read some roms can't be flashed with that recovery? . What is required to move from froyo to gb? I think his firmware is 2.2? But I will check...
Lastly I know Its based on your needs but and suggestions for stable gb roms that are fast with oc ability. And maybe vc

Well if you want official 2.3,you have to flash new baseband.....honestly I would stick with what you got and flash cyanongenmod 7...there's Mik's 6.5.8 (.32 kernel) and 6.6.1 (.35 kernel) than there's 7.2 a6 with 32/35...these are old baseband roms that are unofficial gingerbread roms....you should go to bytecodes thread for a list of kernels,mods,roms, and tuts...its under android development than stickies forum

To recovery flash your phone:
Download recovery image from here: http://www.megaupload.com/?f=XGKNWZQJ
I was advised to use the ClockworkMod Recovery disk image.
Unzip the file and put the disk image onto the SD card and mount the SD card on your phone.
From android market download the Terminal Emulator
Enter this code in the terminal:
$ su
# mount -o remount rw /system
# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/xbin/flash_image
# chmod 755 /system/xbin/flash_image
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
# mount -o remount ro /system
# reboot recovery
(# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img might give you an bad sector error but it works.)
Download and copy your preferred Cyanogen Mod onto the SD card.
Start the Terminal and write restart recover
This will boot into the recover mode select install zip from SD and select the MOD and install.
To get google apps back:
download zip put on SD card boot into recovery and select install zip from SD card

Clockworkmod recovery,I use amonra 3.06 because of the development menu..there's also Team win recovery, the latest is 2.0.0 beta with theme support and touchscreen but its just a beta

I downloaded gapps from above and looked through and would only use talk. Unless any of that other gapps stuff is needed for the phone to function?

The latest gapps contains the new updated market...if all you want is talk,than extract the gapps.zip, go to system folder than app folder and delete everything but talk than rezip file and flash...or once you extract gapps,find talk.apk and copy over to sdcard than using a file manager copy the file from sdcard to /system/app than set permissions to

Thanks. Finally got the SF card to read by updating his phone to 2.2.2 then rooted and after reboot lost SD again. And yesterday while charging it Poped back up so I walked my brother through recovery and he did that now I'm going to flash a rom tonight ..
What cm would you suggest for froyo? And I didn't see any basebands in that sticky thread just roms kernals and mods etc.. nothing on where to get a baseband for flashing gb.

For the Optimus T, it's almost best you don't flash to the new baseband to retain the utmost compatibility. The new baseband has trouble with the 1700Mhz band, which means if you use 3G, you'll be missing half of your coverage.
Of course, if you don't use 3G, go right ahead. Users are reporting plenty of improvements that make the switch worthwhile. In that case, I would hop over to the O1 Development board and look through the first sticky (labeled Repository of HOWTOs, ROMs, MODs, etc). It has everything you'll need cleanly laid out.
In regard to Froyo: What I did was took the stock rom provided by T-mobile and tweaked it until I was happy with it. This allowed me to retain the highly superior LG Camera app/drivers, which you'll lose if you switch to a rom that doesn't use the LG framework (this includes LG's official Gingerbread). To top it off, I flashed fserv's modification of franco kernel (franco.Kernel-gbsV20a), which gives the stock rom a kick in the pants. Regardless of what kernel you use, make sure it has the touchscreen bug fix.
Finally, the issue you're experiencing with your SD card may not be entirely caused by the OS. The SD card that came with the phone is notorious for crapping out on people. If you can't afford to upgrade to a Class 10 SD card in the near future, I highly recommend that you at least backup its contents and format it from 2.2.2 or, ideally, a computer.

My brother is using a non stock lexar one and I even tried a few if my sandisk or Samsung ones so its deff os related that's why I wanna try different roms so maybe it will be fixed? Do any of the CM ROMS have the right framework etcc for the camera stuff you mentioned. I'm only seeing gb CM ROMS no froyo if I decide to stay 2.2...

Sadly, none of the ones that aren't based on stock Froyo have the LG framework.
One of the features I found really essential was the manual focus. I hope they add support for this eventually.
Looks like I'm gunna back up stock and try Franco kernal. Then I'm looking at either Matt or mik's CM roms? Does either support oc?

Can miks cm flash with either recovery. I'm having SD card issues and when I flashed cement via rom manager when booting recovery it hangs and resets the phone so I was going to try thunder recovery or whatever

Yes you can flash cm7 with any recovery image...some users suggest amonra and some suggest cwm 5.0.2.1
I'd tlgo to clockworkmod,its a lot easier for a noon to understand...I personally like amonra

About the wiping of your sdcard...im guessing you had partitioned your card without knowing what you had done..also sometimes cheap sdcards don't exactly cut it...its best to use a class 10 sdcard

OK, i notice the lg thrive has been long foregoten by LG and us, so i decided to post my root guide here, this should work for most phones with a few modifications, but the lg thrive is a very, very problematic phone so...
ASSUMING YOU ARE STILL ON STOCK 2.2.1 FROYO
1. ROOT
Download super-one-click one click root program from short-fuse here : http://shortfuse.org/?p=193
Then, if you have not already downloaded the Android SDK, download it from android here : http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
once it is installed, go to C:/program files (if windows pick the one with the bits x64 or what ever) / android / tools / ddms.bat
the ddms.bat is a small debugging and screenshoting program. Run it, now go to your phone, go to apps, development, android debugging.
Then find super one click, run it, then plug your phone in. DDMS and SOC should recognize your device, if you have the proper drivers installed already. If their are no drivers installed, go to the lg website and download the update tool, and it will help you download the drivers.
Once your device is recognized, simply hit ROOT on soc.
wait, wait...wait...........wait....DONE!
after a reboot you should have a super user app in your app drawer.
2. CLOCK WORK MOD RECOVERY
from the android market, download Rom Manager by clockwork mod. Once it is installed, go to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Scroll down the list and find LG P500 old BB, This is old baseband. If you updated your phone to 2.3 GingerBread (some how?!) you are probably on new basband, please check. If you are running 2.3 and you are not rooted and you update "officially", get the new bb version.
once you pick LG P500 Old BB (or new, new will not work on 2.2.1 froyo, and should not work on an lg thrive) just wait for the recovery to install. once it is installed, pull your battery out of your phone, or shut it down, how ever you want to, and then press in this order and hold - Home, Volume Up, Power, and HOLD IT TILL YOU SEE SOMETHING NEW. This will be the recovery logo, looking like the Rom manager app icon. Let go once you see it. Now you have a list of things such as reboot system, back up and restore, wipe data/factory reset etc. To navigate, use volume up and down buttons to go up and down, menu as ok, and back button for back. go to back up and restore, and pick backup, and just wait for it to back up your stock rom, so if anything EVER goes wrong, you have your back up to go to, it backs up what walpaper you are using, your kernel, your apps, emails, passwords, EVERYTHING so haha.
Once it is backed up, hit reboot system. It will boot up your phone normaly. For roms to try out, go to argue4android.blogspot.com i have a few lists laying around there with kernels and roms. you put the kernels and roms on the ROOT of your sd card, that means no folders, nothing, just right their.
Now, usually, a rom will not work on the lg thrive because it is still on old baseband, their is not way to update it, or technically no safe way so every rom you will have to flash a kernel that fixes it and some roms do not work with this kernel. ( when you flash your first rom you will see) DO NOT USE CyanogenMod 7 roms, ever, they dont work on the lg thrive. The only gingerbread rom that works is Oxygen. their are some unstable ics cm9 roms but the best is the lg thrive cm10 jelly bean 4.1.2 rom by rashed also on my blog (no kernel needed).
To flash a rom, go to recovery, go to install zip from sd/install zip from sd/ROM.Zip (or gapps.zip or kernel.zip or batteryfix.zip)
wait, and it will install, reboot, you will see that you have BIG color issues, this is because of baseband and stock .32 kernel. That is why you need the .35 kernel. The kernel you will be using for just about every new baseband lg optimus one rom is attached bellow called p505 stock old baseband bla bla bla .zip.
flash it if you have color issues on a rom, most gb, and ics roms need it but gb does not work unless you are using oxygen. so its eather gb oxygen or rashed97's cm10 jelly bean rom specifically for the lg thrive.

Rashed97 now has a cm10.1 Rome that works better than cm10
Not the greatest guide... for starters you really shouldn't be recommending cm10 jelly bean 4.1.2 rom by rashed or any jb roms for that matter. They are still way too buggy and have horrible battery drain. On both the p505 and p506 there are plenty of perfectly working ics roms. If you are claiming those to be unstable compared to the jb ones I am not sure what you have been doing.

As far as I fan see, you don't have an lg thrive...I tried everything on my 2 thrives and that method is the only one that works, the kernel is a stock GB kernel that will fix base hand issues. Thank you for this guide. My first and successful ROM install! I've never used a "bone" stock version of Android, it runs so smooth and looks so nice on this old P506. So far everything works (except for a few things in camera like video playback and time lapse; one or two other things).
I had no color issues nor changed baseband - i flashed the rom with clockwork and everything looked and ran fine on the first reboot.
Instead of using the links kindly provided by you and aion, i went with what I think is Rashed97's "official" downloads at:

Should I try again and this time use your p505 old baseband rom?
And if so, does one flash that one first and then also flash Rashed's version?
Do older versions of cm have more complete functionality? (however they would be older OS's but I might be ok with that).
Either way, if the camera is the only fail, I am thinking it's not a deal breaker. SO AGAIN - TTTHHHHHAANNNNKKKK YYYYOOOOUUUUU for this helpful guide and being one of the VERY few tech-heads out there who is supporting the p506 crowd! (the other p5xx models got a lot more support from their carriers and had a lot more owners) This poor little workhorse got very little love from the public and ZERO love from AT&T! But it served me soooo well for years!

You are welcome, I've moved on to my new HTC first with Rashed.
Um, you could use the latest Jenkins builds, Rashed makes those too, just make sure you do get the p506 version. Android 4.4 will never run on our phone so...
