[Q] Roadblocks to rooting my device- HELP - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I am attempting to root my SPrint HTC EVO 4g LTE with software version 1.13.651.1 710RD. my hardware version is 0003.
Ok, my phone is currently normal. Normal meaning no Root, no S-OFF, no nothing. its completely factory. I am trying to root it and am stuck because i have questions, and i have scoured this site and the internet and can not find my answers ANYWHERE. Here are my problems...
I am trying to root my device with the one-click-root that i found on this site. Before rooting, it tells me to back up my device with Titanium or another method. However... i cannot use Titanium unless my phoone is ROOTED so how is this possible?? How can i possibly back up my phone when im not even rooted yet?
Also, it says to clear my google wallet settings. When i go to google wallet, it says this app is not yet supported on my service or device... how do i clear my google wallet settings if i cant even access them? Ive looked on other sites telling me to change my phone into thinking its another device but it all requires a ROOT!!
Please help, ive been so frustrated that i want to just chuck my phone at the wall.
I managed to install all the drivers required to connect my phone and my computer.
All im asking is how do i back up my phone without a root and how do i clear my google wallet settings without a root?

1) I think Titanium Backup actually does allow for backing up some stuff without root access now. Otherwise just bite the bullet and start fresh. You only have to start fresh once. After that you can backup your apps with Titanium Backup for future events.
2) If you've never setup Google Wallet than you have nothing to clear. You'll be fine.

If GWallet says unsupported and you haven't opened it ever then don't worry about it. There's some new feature with TBackup that let's you backup apps without root. I haven't tried it and idk if it's just with the pro version. If you don't care about backing up anything and can reinstall all your apps later then don't worry about it. You might lose texts that you have sent tho.
Edit: louched beat me to it...

Though you don't need to unroot to take the update here are some instruction to unroot.
I don't know if that will unroot you, but I do know that an app called Supersu will.
Step 1. Download SuperSu from the market
Step 2. Delete Superuser.apk from /system/app
Step 3. Open up Supersu and update Su binary.
Step 4. Scroll all the way to the right and go to the bottom
Step 5. Select Permanent Unroot.
Your device will be unrooted!
well the reason is that ever since i had the phone unrooted, it wouldnt allow me to update the phone, as it was installing the update it would say update failed. im not sure if theres a difference between unrooting and "returning to stock" as my cousin put it.
anyway ill get on that right now and see where that puts me.
thank you so much
** actually before i do anything, i wanna clarify if unrooting is the same as returning to stock.
ive never done this before so please bear with me lol, i guess whats most important is that i dont lose the photos i have....contact can just be re-synced on google

No, unrooting and stock are 2 different things. Unrooting, obviously, just ranges away root privileges. you can think of returning to stock as re-installing windows, like you just bought the phone.
Photos should be fine, a they should be stored on your external SD card. If you are worried about losing your pics, just plug your phone into a computer and copy your pics to your computer.

Stock 1.13, non-rooted, borked Google Wallet to OTA 1.22, rooted, S-Off, fixed Wallet

I wanted to update to the latest OTA, but I didn't want to lose my opportunity for S-OFF. Also, I had previously activated Google Wallet, and since Wallet was no longer useable on 1.13, I was unable to clear the settings, and I did not want to brick my NFC element. Here's what I did.
Zedomax's Root
Ran a Titanium Backup
Backed up both internal and external SD cards
Utnick's Google Wallet Patch
Fuses' LazyPanda S-OFF
Bpdamas' OTA update method (I skipped the first section on "Process for installing a stock recovery" since I still had the stock recovery already, coming from stock)
Thought I would share in case others were in a similar position as I was and were trying to figure out what to do.
Ok listen I had stock 1.13 as well & had Zedomax's 1click root/unroot. Then I had Titanium Pro root & backed up all my files. Then I swiched my S-ON 2 "S-OFF" by doing LazyPandas lil tutorial HOWEVER I did the 1 click UNINSTALL for my root & removed it off my phone I did the OTA update 4 android 4.03 firmware 1.22.651.3 then tried 2 RE ROOT it & had an EPIC FAIL!! How do I get my root back?? I was meaning 2 do the TRWP recovery b4 I uninstalled the root, smh
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Since you should still be s-off, just follow Bpdamas' OTA update method for flashing LazyPanda's hboot, TWRP from the bootloader, and then flashing SuperSU from TWRP. I think you want to start at number 16.
This was the exact post I was looking for, since I was in the same situation as you.
If only I would have read it this morning.
This is almost the exact situation I'm in with a couple exceptions. I'm already rooted using Zedomax method but still S-ON with stock recovery, etc. Since I didn't want to use any custom ROMs or anything just yet, I figured the root-only method was fine for where I wanted to be.
I previously set up Google Wallet but then started getting the Your Device is not Supported message. Therefore, I don't want to go down any road which could cause a reset of my device without being able to first get into Wallet and clear my settings since I don't want to chance bricking my secure element.
So to the Robbie_G, in your step 4 where you used the Google Wallet Patch, did you then go in and clear your Google Wallet settings or did you just leave it be? I was reading through all the steps in the other process trying to see if it looked like any of them would be doing a full wipe of the phone or the equivalent of a factory reset. If you use that Google Wallet Patch, can you then revert back to the supported version, or do you have to stay with that one indefinitely or risk losing access to Google Wallet?
Nope, my OTA is failing for some reason. Trying to see if I can locate the log of the OTA install to figure out why, though I can't really find it anywhere.

I applied the patch, cleared settings, then actually replaced the original wallet files.
Following the steps in the OP did not clear/factory reset anything.
In the same boat as u are. Had previously rooted w HTC unlock and really borked wallet and NFC. So, I'm taking it easy w my exchanged phone hoping not to brick NFC in this one.
Reading zedomax's root method he says only works w 1.22.651. I haven't done the ota yet so I'm still on 1.13.651 R2. So, as long as I don't do the ota it should work right? Since I can't clear settings for wallet I'm sketched out bc I got $ on it and this is my only NFC device.

Unless something changed, zedomax's root only works on 1.13, since that was my first step.
Edit: he said it "will ONLY work on software version 1.22.651.1 and older", as in numbers lower, not on 1.22.651.3. So yes, it will work on 1.13
Realized that after posting that's what zedo meant. Idk man, I'm so turned off with the rooting thing for this phone. Og EVO I flashed erday. Was a mad streaker. Don't like the htcdev unlock method or the lazypanda s-off. Completely respect their work, just dont trust my NFC won't brick again.
Stuck between an ota and a NFC brick. Damned if I do or if I don't.

Unroot Droid Razr, phone not recognized by computer

My friend gave me a droid razr which is rooted and has a custom rom installed on it. I was able to charge the device and boot into the OS however the phone simply will not be recognized by the computer. I've tried 3 different cables to no avail, there must be something wrong with the USB port itself.
Is there any way to unroot the device and get back to stock without having to connect the phone to the computer? I am able to put the SD card into a different phone in order to transfer files to it.
Thanks alot in advance

Using the app SuperSU, there's an option for "full unroot" in the settings. If you plan on keeping the ROM, I wouldn't unroot if I were you. If you DON'T plan on keeping the ROM, then you're pretty much hopeless to remove it without connecting to a computer. Are you sure the drivers are installed for the device? You say the phone charges, so I doubt it's the port. Do USB options show up in the notification tray on the phone when you plug it in to a computer?

There are no usb options that appear in the notification window, and since I posted this the phone has quit charging . I'm not sure how he went about rooting the phone because when I went into the recovery, it was still the stock recovery that was installed. I did a factory reset on the device and when I booted it back up it asked me to activate before I could go any further. I tried using my sim card from my galaxy nexus but it gave me an error. I was thinking that I might bring the phone to verizon and see if it activates with a clean sim card and then look to see if it is still rooted or not.
Also, after further digging I found out that he actually did not install a custom ROM, all he did was root the device. So if I can get into the SuperSU app I will go ahead and unroot the device.

From what I know, the ports on the RAZR are poorly designed and prone to break. I had issues with HDMI detection a while ago and had to send it in for repairs.
Factory resets do not unroot the device. When you get the chance to use the SuperSU app (you may have to download it from the market), it should be easy to unroot it, but it's hard to say when the method isn't known.
And as far as I know, can't you just use wi-fi to complete initial setup?

Ok, I got the device activated and yeah it appears that it is still rooted. You mentioned downloading SuperSU off of the marketplace, as only Superuser was installed on the phone.
I downloaded SuperSU and when I try to open it I am getting the error ("There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!").
So yeah, I am not sure where to go from here, the port is still not working so I need to do something before the battery dies.

Try an app like Root Checker or Got Root? to make sure the device IS rooted. I have messily unrooted a device before and while it WAS unrooted, it left Superuser and Busybox behind.
If it IS rooted, find an app of your choice (System Tuner Pro, Titanium Backup...) and uninstall root apps (Superuser). Cover up root best you can. I've handed a boot-looping device in for repairs with no carrier trouble, so I'm sure you'll be fine.
If it ISN'T... Well, you're hopeless without a computer as far as I can say.
Also, it may not help, but if your device is indeed rooted, you could also go into Superuser, swipe left and try to update the binaries so you can try SuperSU again.

I'm going to try Root Checker right now to see if its actually rooted like you said. I actually updated the Superuser app earlier and SuperSU still wasn't working so I'm starting to think it may have lost root somehow.
I also tried using Superuser Update Fixer and manually flashing the SU binary file from recovery but since the phone is still on stock recovery it wouldn't work.
I was also thinking that I could try and cover up root with titanium backup as you said, that was going to be my last step but since the battery is getting lower and lower I may have to go that route and hopefully not have a problem with Verizon. I guess it also helps that the stock recovery and ROM are still installed on it.
This is just a side project for me, I have a galaxy nexus myself and I have never had any trouble with it.
UPDATE: I just used both of the root checking applications you suggested and they both say that the phone is not actually rooted. Root Checker just spit out a message saying it wasn't rooted and Got Root? said that it located busybox but could not obtain root access. I'm going to try and clean things up with titanium backup.
UPDATE 2: When I installed titanium backup, the app asked me for root permissions and I hit grant. When I open superuser it shows it as giving permission to titanium backup but I can't find Superuser in the list of applications within titanium backup itself. There has to be another way to remove superuser.
UPDATE 3: I just tried to delete the superuser.apk file using root explorer and I get a pop-up saying that it won't allow me to delete that APK because my phone is not rooted. Ugh.. now I'm stuck.

Yeah... Sorry about your luck
You could try sending it into Verizon still. They may fix it. Perhaps not for free. Even if not at all, at least it's just a side project?
That's about all I can think of :/

Rooted or not rooted?

Hi, I had local mobile phone shop (since then gone out of business) try to unlock my Atrix 4G when I first bought it. They couldn't find an appropriate code but 'rooted' my phone for free (Superuser installed)! At the time my phone was on Froyo, but some months later upgraded to Gingerbread and successfully unlocked. I have since tried to install a few apps that require a rooted phone but the apps say that my phone is NOT rooted and will not install . I have also tried to install a few apps which will not install as they tell me that my phone IS rooted . I have also tried root checkers, again these tell me that my phone is NOT rooted.
Is this because 'superuser' is still installed on my phone and that the apps sees this?
How do I remove superuser or get round this issue as another phone emporium tells me (over the phone) that factory resetting will almost certainly brick the phone?
P. S. I have tried to search for clues in the forums but being uninitiated in phone hacking terms, I can't seem to find anything related.
Regards, Gareth.

I guess it's possible that some (poorly written) apps consider the phone rooted if there is the Superuser app installed. I'm also guessing the phone got unrooted when you upgraded to GB. I'd trust the root checker apps - if they say you're not rooted, that means you're not (at least not properly). So since you're not rooted, there is probably no way to remove the Superuser app.
I think your best bet is to root the phone yourself. The preinstall method is fairly easy and works on all known phone variants and software versions so it's pretty safe. There are some automatic rooting tools too.
Also, either you misunderstood something (or didn't explain it to them right), or they don't know what they're talking about. Factory reset can't ever brick the phone. I've never heard of such a case, ever.
i never saw apps that will not install because of root %)
and yes, root the phone yourself is the best way to control it instructions are in sticked thread in "Atrix 4G General" forum.

[Q] Randomly lost root access

I recently got s-off, updated from 1.15 to 2.06, installed abp and also flashed a no ads zip file for good measure because some ads would still get through. Everything was going great until the phone randomly froze. I held down the power button and rebooted into recovery and cleared my cache and dalvik cache, thinking that may have been the problem. Upon rebooting after that, I come to find out I've lost my root access. This is so weird. I am still s-off and have the 2222222 confirmation shown when I am in the bootloader, I still have super user installed, but when I run an app that needs root, such as adaway, it says I don't have root. I downloaded root checker and it confirmed that I didn't have root. I don't understand how this could have happened. Is there anyway to regain root? I have been having the worst luck with this phone :\

Send me a PM if you want me to help you out. You need to install a custom recovery and use that to install a rooted rom and kernel. It can be a stock rooted rom. Or mostly stock however you want to do it, I'll help you set it up and teach you some things along the way.
I can teach you all kinds of things via team viewer, it wont take long and it's a necessity for having a rooted phone in my opinion. I know it can be frustrating and over whelming but it will get better I promise.
Oh and also you don't need to worry about losing s off. It's at a much lower level than anything you've mentioned touching. So it will always be there regardless because you definitely don't want to be messing with hboots or s off type stuff.
Hey, I PMed you.

How to get root back after subsequent apps are denied root?
Over the last year, this has happened several times while having different custom roms installed. It happened several times with my Galaxy S4 and S5, and recently with my Galaxy Tab S 10.5. I have not lost root on my Nexus 7 (2013). The common denominator appears to be the Samsung devices.
Through SuperSu, I have removed root, rebooted, and installed root again with CF-Root which has not given me root access.
The only way I have been able to recover to date is to do a factory rest. It is interesting to note that I would have thought that the factory rest would take me back to the Samsung rom but in the last two time that I did this on either device, I ended up with the custom rom that I just had but without root or custom recovery.
To go back to a Samsung rom, I would think that if I started the device in download mode and did a flash with odin.
But rather than go through this, is there a reason why this happens and/or is there a way to avoid it?
Lastly, is there a true way of getting root back once it stops granting root?

Best to post such things in your device specific forum.
This forum is for the Droid DNA.
However, gaining root is as simple as downloading the latest SuperSu zip and flashing it in recovery.
Very simple to do on any rom.
