Hi, I had local mobile phone shop (since then gone out of business) try to unlock my Atrix 4G when I first bought it. They couldn't find an appropriate code but 'rooted' my phone for free (Superuser installed)! At the time my phone was on Froyo, but some months later upgraded to Gingerbread and successfully unlocked. I have since tried to install a few apps that require a rooted phone but the apps say that my phone is NOT rooted and will not install . I have also tried to install a few apps which will not install as they tell me that my phone IS rooted . I have also tried root checkers, again these tell me that my phone is NOT rooted.
Is this because 'superuser' is still installed on my phone and that the apps sees this?
How do I remove superuser or get round this issue as another phone emporium tells me (over the phone) that factory resetting will almost certainly brick the phone?
P. S. I have tried to search for clues in the forums but being uninitiated in phone hacking terms, I can't seem to find anything related.
Regards, Gareth.

I guess it's possible that some (poorly written) apps consider the phone rooted if there is the Superuser app installed. I'm also guessing the phone got unrooted when you upgraded to GB. I'd trust the root checker apps - if they say you're not rooted, that means you're not (at least not properly). So since you're not rooted, there is probably no way to remove the Superuser app.
I think your best bet is to root the phone yourself. The preinstall method is fairly easy and works on all known phone variants and software versions so it's pretty safe. There are some automatic rooting tools too.
Also, either you misunderstood something (or didn't explain it to them right), or they don't know what they're talking about. Factory reset can't ever brick the phone. I've never heard of such a case, ever.
i never saw apps that will not install because of root %)
and yes, root the phone yourself is the best way to control it instructions are in sticked thread in "Atrix 4G General" forum.

If I were to use super one click to unroot my atrix, would I have to removed any other things to be able to bring the phone back to factory settings? Does super one click remove the super user app? Or would I have to do that manually after or before the unroot? Same question for non-market place apps. I was going to return the phone to get it cheaper somewhere else.
Super One click appears to not unroot completely. After unrooting, GOOD fir enterprise and busybox still thinks the phone is rooted....

anyway to confirm this further? It is kind of a show stopper for me in rooting the phone.
Don't use SuperOneClick to root the phone, use aRoot in the development section instead, as its specifically for the Atrix, and can unroot.

2nd this.
SuperOneClick seems to create a little busybox mess since it's more of a universal phone tool, rather then Atrix specific.

Okay, here is the situation: I have an Atrix (obviously) that I rooted using the Gingerbreak.exe downloaded from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626. I just tried to update my phone to Gingerbread using the OTA update in About Phone and it failed; I’m assuming it is because I have rooted the device (if not please correct me and tell me what I did wrong). So I hopped onto these forums looking for a way to undo the root, or a way to get the update to work, and my eyes have glazed over. Could someone please tell me how to unroot my atrix before i use it as a hockey puck
I posted a thread very similar to this. You should look around.

Now honestly, I have no idea why it didnt let you update, since I used SuperOneClick with Gingerbreak and it seemed to work after updating, Didn't really test out any SU apps but I still had it. To think of it, It's kinda useless for me to state that, however it states success...
One of the options for you, since you are still on Froyo and apparently rooted are to install Gingerbreak 1.2. I'm not 100% sure if it will work, but i do know it can't harm your device.
After you install Gingerbreak 1.2, you should root again, then after the reboot, reopen the app and unroot. This method should be flawless since you did re-root with the app. But again, Not 100% sure. And right now you can unlock your bootloader and just start loading if you'd like. That is a much easier and safer way to do it. Plenty of tuts on Android Dev forum here.
lol don't worry about unrooting. I'll tell you that much.
It's not so much of a problem with root, but moreso the pre-test that accompanies the OTA. If you fail it because you use Titanium to clear out bloatware and stuff like that. even if you remove root, you still won't be able to upgrade. Instead, just use this method.
Just download the Automated Upgrade for PC Users and let your phone upgrade. All your data should still be there, but backup before just in case. Oh, and if you wanna root again after you upgrade (cause i mean, why WOULDN'T you want root?!), just use the preinstall method (hehe I'll leave this for you to search. it'll be good practice for the future, i promise =])
happy upgrading!

cant really search for this seeing as i wanted to ask the developer directly but i cant due to new user restrictions but anyway...
i downloaded the generic shell helper from bunny... GSH-RC2.rar to be exact
and my question is will this program be able to disable root regardless of the method used?
before you ask, no i did not root the phone myself and the person that did it for me is out of touch. i do beleive he mentioned Zerg- if that helps at all.
thanks for the help guys

Though you don't need to unroot to take the update here are some instruction to unroot.
I don't know if that will unroot you, but I do know that an app called Supersu will.
Step 1. Download SuperSu from the market
Step 2. Delete Superuser.apk from /system/app
Step 3. Open up Supersu and update Su binary.
Step 4. Scroll all the way to the right and go to the bottom
Step 5. Select Permanent Unroot.
Your device will be unrooted!
well the reason is that ever since i had the phone unrooted, it wouldnt allow me to update the phone, as it was installing the update it would say update failed. im not sure if theres a difference between unrooting and "returning to stock" as my cousin put it.
anyway ill get on that right now and see where that puts me.
thank you so much
** actually before i do anything, i wanna clarify if unrooting is the same as returning to stock.
ive never done this before so please bear with me lol, i guess whats most important is that i dont lose the photos i have....contact can just be re-synced on google

No, unrooting and stock are 2 different things. Unrooting, obviously, just ranges away root privileges. you can think of returning to stock as re-installing windows, like you just bought the phone.
Photos should be fine, a they should be stored on your external SD card. If you are worried about losing your pics, just plug your phone into a computer and copy your pics to your computer.

Questions go in Q&A
I am attempting to root my SPrint HTC EVO 4g LTE with software version 1.13.651.1 710RD. my hardware version is 0003.
Ok, my phone is currently normal. Normal meaning no Root, no S-OFF, no nothing. its completely factory. I am trying to root it and am stuck because i have questions, and i have scoured this site and the internet and can not find my answers ANYWHERE. Here are my problems...
I am trying to root my device with the one-click-root that i found on this site. Before rooting, it tells me to back up my device with Titanium or another method. However... i cannot use Titanium unless my phoone is ROOTED so how is this possible?? How can i possibly back up my phone when im not even rooted yet?
Also, it says to clear my google wallet settings. When i go to google wallet, it says this app is not yet supported on my service or device... how do i clear my google wallet settings if i cant even access them? Ive looked on other sites telling me to change my phone into thinking its another device but it all requires a ROOT!!
Please help, ive been so frustrated that i want to just chuck my phone at the wall.
I managed to install all the drivers required to connect my phone and my computer.
All im asking is how do i back up my phone without a root and how do i clear my google wallet settings without a root?
1) I think Titanium Backup actually does allow for backing up some stuff without root access now. Otherwise just bite the bullet and start fresh. You only have to start fresh once. After that you can backup your apps with Titanium Backup for future events.
2) If you've never setup Google Wallet than you have nothing to clear. You'll be fine.

If GWallet says unsupported and you haven't opened it ever then don't worry about it. There's some new feature with TBackup that let's you backup apps without root. I haven't tried it and idk if it's just with the pro version. If you don't care about backing up anything and can reinstall all your apps later then don't worry about it. You might lose texts that you have sent tho.
Edit: louched beat me to it...

I did a search for unrooting, but I didn't find exactly what I was looking for. I saw one person asked about restoring to factory defaults, with a reply suggesting to reflash to v10e with the offline LG update method. However, if I haven't actually made any changes, could I just use RunMe_L9.bat again and select the unroot option, then restore to factory defaults? I'm using P769 (T-mobile) on firmware v10e.
Thanks!
If you go into supersu app under settings near the bottom there is a full unroot option.

I see, so as long as I stay on v10e, it's easy to root and unroot as needed? Is everything really that easily reversible? Frankly, I don't know why I would want to constantly root / unroot; I just want to know if it's possible. My experience with rooting on Android has been limited to CM9 on an HP Touchpad thus far.
Yea you can root and unroot as much as you like as far as I know. I've read some people on here getting the 10g update pushed to their phone while they were sleeping though, so I would keep root installed and make sure that voodoo has your root backed up at all times.
