[Q]Xperia U - Resize Internal Memory - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hey there everyone,
I've got a question that im impatient to know if its possible or not :
The Xperia U has a total of 6GB for personal use. 2GB for apps and 4GB for Data.
Can we trade between those 2 sections ? What i mean is :
Can i configure the phone (somehow) to have 1GB for apps and 5GB for Data ?
For me,2GB for apps is excessive and 4GB for Data is a bit low so tradeing 1GB between them would make it perfectly balanced.
Anyone know if its possible ?o.o

should be possible if the partition can be edited...have been digging on the same doubt for quite a while now....i think it can be done.

Rom manager app has an option for partitioning sd card but never used it

Thanks for making this question.
It would be really cool if someone helps out on this.

I tried a few apps like Rom Manager ,andromizer and more but nope, its not gonna work.
I've been reading around tho that people who needed to enlarge the App internal memory ,could do it by repartitioning the Data partition and use a few scripts.
Also there is another solution which is copy the files to /system/app and "Directory Link" them to a false one on the SD card, but thats a pain.
Problem is none of those seem to work ,i tried linking directories but nope wont work. Also repartitioning the Data Partition means formatting the current ROM which i cant really do as i need my phone intact with all the info/apps/config that it has atm,not to mention we dont even know if that would work because all of those reparitioning use SDCard's and its ment to EXPAND/Enlarge the App Internal Memory...not reduce it (which is what we want).
*confused*

Somebody please throw light in here!

Please Help! regarding this

You need a kernel with a partition editor in the ramdisk (the Ace 2 CM10.2 has parted, I'd prefer (also) having gdisk as it isn't limited to creating partitions in order -- that's sufficient on the Samsung, can't say if it could work on the Sony without seeing a partitions dump first), a ROM in zip format (if you want to resize /system too), a computer with ADB and a calculator

You can using partition resizer program posted by munjeni somewhere in forum just note do not touch 1-9 partition just mmcblk0p10 (this one is system, then goes data, cache etc) and after you find what you need, delete them and make new ones.
Not problem really.

[Q] Data2ext - N00b questions

Hi Guys,
I would have tacked this onto the back of an existing thread, but the only relevant ones I could find were in development (I’m still under 10 posts) – and this is more of a general usage question anyway.
I’m running CM7.0.2 and been I’ve been using Apps2SD (darktremor) for a month or so. The onboard memory for apps on the Legend is abysmal, so freeing space up and being able to have more than half a dozen apps is great. I was looking to take up Data2ext too. I’m still S-ON (I haven’t found a serious need for S-OFF yet, and I figure the less access I have to the bowels of my phone, the less likely I’m gonna brick it), so still using CWM2.x and obviously not running EXT4 yet.
Just wanted to ask a couple of stupid n00b questions before I try anything (I’d rather ask this now, then be posting “help I ****ed up my phone” later on).
- Am I right in believing that that data2ext only moves app data, not the apps themselves to the SD car so I need to continue using apps2sd as a companion script?
- Does data2ext need its own additional partition setting up prior – or does it create its own partition/utilize an existing partition? If there needs to be a preconfigured partition, any recommendations on how much space to allocate?
- Is there anything in particular that I need to know before I run through TGF’s guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902395)?
Thanks for the help guys!
data2ext will use the partition that darktremor currently uses, and you don't want to have dark tremor and data2ext on at the same time, funny things happen.
Data2ext remounts the entire data partition to a partition on the SD card. So anything that gets written to /data (apps, app data etc) goes to the SD card instead.
You need to know that this could go wrong, but I think the first post covers most of it.
That makes sense. I previously wasn’t sure if data2ext only moved app data only, and apps2sd still needed to be used to move the actual apps themselves. As that’s not the case, it’ll make things much easier not having to **** around with 2 different scripts to hopefully get them to play nicely.
I did actually end up stepping up to Blayo’s fake-flash CWM 3.0.1.3 yesterday; though I’m still trying to work out partitions/file systems with it – creating partitions in CWM recovery defaults to EXT3 with no option to set EXT4, and after manually creating an EXT4 partition in GParted CWM wouldn’t let me mount /sd-ext. As your initial post already details formatting /sd-ext to EXT4 anyway, it’ll be interesting to see how nicely this plays with 3.0.1.3.
Thanks for the disclaimer on the risks involved. Without intending to sound patronising; I’m well aware there is the ever present potential to really **** things up, and that I do only have limited knowledge compared to a lot of people posting on xda – which is why I try and get any/all information available before hand, and follow instructions given closely.
Coo'. Just shout if you need help, I'm subscribed to this thread so I should see it
Seems to have worked like a charm.
One question though – I know you can confirm data2ext is successfully running by launching "data2ext --enable" a second time after the final reboot, but is there any means to monitor the used/available space on /sd-ext?
Both Titanium Backup and a2sdGUI allowed me to keep tabs on this, but Ti is unable to see the /sd-ext partition now (I haven’t bothered installing a2sdGUI, not really any point).
It might be a small thing, but if possible I would like to be able to see it fill up, just to give me piece of mind all is OK.
*edit* scratch that last part, just noticed Android and Ti now sees the Internal Memory as a total combined capacity the internal memory + /sd-ext. Eitherway, I'm up and running
i no my question is noob but still.....i m using CM7 nd CWM 2.5.0.7....if i use d optioned partition ur sd card....is dat data to ext ? ndnd wat is swap size ? also how to check what claSS SDCARD I HAVE... I HAVE 16GB KINGSTON SDCARD!
I've a noob question too, if the sd card is partitioned to allow some internal apps to run on this special partition what is currently the safest procedure to do this?

I got mine up and running last night... created a 1 gig partition for data... data2ext is active, but my phone is now SLOW as molasses. SD card is Class 10 and tests on a computer reveal it to be fast.
I'm at a loss.

The card probably doesn't handle small files very well. Class 4 seems to be the best bet for data2ext
You're kidding. Ugh! Maybe it was the method I used to format?

Seriously?
So are you using a class 4 with your own cm data2ext script and in ext2 or ext4?
Serious.. It is mentioned several times before by Blay0. Even a fast card will work very slow with data2ext. Why do you even need data2ext? Are you a developed? If not app2ad should beer enough for you... NInge really needs data to be on as i they are not often changing system files..

Hi,
Since this is a noob thread I'm feeling free to ask for help.
Somehow without any knowledge I've managed to Root my Legend, Flash roms numerous times, make my Legend S-Off, twig and play with different options like splash screen and all sorts of stuff that you need a bit or more of development knowledge. I'm a psychologist - I have no knowledge whatsoever.
Now that I've flashed ogo2's rom found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987251, I have cut down internal space to about 20MB+-.
I need help with this whole data2ext, ext2/ext4 and all the commands I've never met in earlier development stuff I've done to my Legend.
Where do I start? Is there anywhere I can read a noob guide for these issues?
Please help!
reupugi
edit: Oh I forgot - I have 8 GB class 4 card.
What help do you need? Understanding what it is and how it works? Or just setting it up.
Are you planning on using the data2ext found in my thread, or somewhere else?
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
Hi TGF,
I need help mainly with setting it up. I have no intention learning developing through trying here and there to implement different things others created.
My intention was to use the data2ext you created.
At the moment I've changed back to the nightly builds of CM7 (currently #153), since I had sync problems with ogo2's ROM. So I'm not so pressured space wise, but I'll still be glad to go through with the Data2ext.
Thanx,
reupugi
Ok, well the guide in the first post covers most of it, is there a specific bit you're stuck on?

It assumes I understand how to create ext2 or ext4, or to choose between the two. DO I have to backup my SD card when I create an ext2/4 partition?
Where do I use the commands in your post of data2ext?

You do need to backup your sd card, our you lose all your data. Rom manager has an option for creating ext partitions on your sd card, and I'd go for ext4, as it's safer. There's a section in that thread on upgrading from the ext2 version. Create your position with rom manager, then follow that section through. The commands can be executed on the phone using a terminal emulator, or from the pc using adb.

[Q] About Partition and Swap?!?!?!

hi people!! im impressed one more time with the new rom 2.1.9!! but i have a question related to one of its new features which i dont understand very well... i hope some one has a little time to explain it with details to help me and other people who may have these same questions...
first of all whats partition and swap? i suppose partition is to take a part of ur sd card for aps and all this stuff, but swap?
second... i dont have any partition and i always move lots of aps to sd card without problem, then, why should i do a parition? is there any advantage in doing it?? in that case, is there a guide around here to do it in an easy way?
and finally.. swap! what is it for? is there advantages in doing it? in that case what are them and how could i do it in an easy way?
i hope some one could have a moment to explain it a little bit but please as clear as possible, taking into account im a full noob in this topic... and if anyone have more questions related to this topic post here if u want...
i would just like fully understanding all the functions, possibilities and goods of my x10 mini and this incredible rom...
thanks everybody who wants to help!!!
About swap and partition, actually I've tried it both, but it just makes my device slower (even on class 10 SD card)... Maybe, the explanation of this issue is because our phone already use up speed reading files and programs installed on SD card, so swap just makes it any harder...
I tried partitioning my sd card with swap file, using swapper, swapper2, but the best result is when I don''t partition my sd card at all..
Then, the next question perhaps : then why are there swap availability ? That I can't answer...

thx for ur answer!! at least u can talk from experience... the fact is that i feel my phone runs amazingly without these swap and partition things... but as u say, taking into account they are available i wanted to know if it would be even better for my phone to try them.
however watching ur results i will stay without swap and partitions, because i have all i need in my phone and still free space
thank u buddy!

[Q] Create 2nd partition on Xperia S, is it possible?

I want to create a second partition on my Xperia S in order to use Link2sd. Most of the help I can find are about using Minitool partition wizard. But Minitool does not work for me for some unknown reason. It just can not find the Xperia S.
Has anybody experience about that? Could you please tell how you did? I have rooted my phone but the bootloader is still locked.
i think we dont need to use the link2sd cause we have already a big size of storage. link2sd is useful when u have a external sdcard and your phone internal memory is @ small size, like my coby tablet it was only 8G then i bought a 16G external sdcard then i used link2sd. .

Thanks for your reply.
My thought was to increase the amount of free RAM which is often very limited on Xperia S although the internal memory is enough (we don't even have the option to install en external SD). I think that Link2sd could reduce the occupied volume in RAM, but I could also have misunderstand it.
Best regards

I am new on this, it is very possible that I got it all wrong.
As what I understand, the Xperia S has a limited volume of the internal memory reserved for installation of apps although the total volume of the flash memory in the phone is much larger. In that case it sould be a great help if there is a way to move more effectively away the apps/programs from the reserved volume to the flash memory. I suppose that is what the Link2sd should do.
Talking about the wasted RAM, I guess there is space for discussions here. As I said above, I am new in this area and it is best that I don't say too much stupid staff. But I have never heard people say that the money which are not used are wasted money.

You have 2GB for apps, and all game data is still stored on the virtual sdcard. I can run about 200 apps with no issues. About RAM: you shouldn't bother about free RAM, all RAM is used for your apps and it'll be freed in under .5 seconds when it's needed.
Thread moved to Q & A section, post in the relevant section next time.

??????????????????
By using an application that use the mass storage mode I can see the partition in Minitool.
Is there any risk to brick the phone if change the partition size of the emulated sd card ?

I want to know if it is possible to divide without brick. Some applications use the spacer of a large internal memory.
I have an Xperia P but it only comes with 2GB of space to install apps and games
link2sd doesn't work here because this phone lack of MicroSd
I have seen that for xperia s/t made a mod that makes a larger partition for apps
and I really wish to know how to have more space for installing apps on this Xperia P (Locked Bootloader)
I've tried Minitool Partition but only corrupts the memory (link2sd doesn't recognize 2nd partition) and ask for a format on the phone, also with CWM partition option
anybody can help me with this ?

[Q] partitioning 64gb micro sdcard

Hi every1, fairly simple question... but in true xda style you need some info.
Sgs3 ultimarom 8.0 running LOTS OF MASSIVE GAMES. Ive almost got every gamelost game. It will be a sandisk mobile ultra class 10 64gb micro sd card when it arrives. I currently use a 16gb (below) and with nothing but game data, 4gb music and my titanium backups I only have 300mb left. all of the games that use more than 200mb data in /sdcard/android/ are running off the external using directory bind. So I ordered a 64gb. Also I DONT WANT to use the 64gb as internal. I will be using directory bind. I know I have to use partition magic to make it fat32 (and still manage to keep 64gb). So cmw can use it. Correct?
My question is though would it be beneficial to partition it with 2 partitions 1 for games n one for everything else? WOULD IT BE FASTER???? Or shall I just dump them in a folder as I do now? If I do have 2 partitons will my phone mount them both without requiring an app to do it ? (like I do to mount ntfs - note I freeze this app when not in use as I dont want it always running)
Is there anything else I need to know?
Thanks everyone for the great community here! I love xda. Check it daily if not more! More than fb anyway and thanks in advanced.
O n if my search missed a thread that answers this, sorry please point me in that direction n lock thread...
you can use your phone to format it.
The phone won't recognize two partitions, and it won't make it faster

Mate how did manage to install cwn im not finding one
Hey mate how u going at making a rom?
There is a much easier way now.. You can convert the portable storage SDcard to an adoptable sdcard which merges with the system. Now originally converted the portable storage to adoptable thinking it would move more apps to the sdcard and leave more free space. But it in reality did not do much more than manually moving the apps to the sdcard. So I ended up with 1GB or so of free internal memory.. But all the memory free and how much memory was present was screwed up because it says I have like 64gb memory when I only have 16gb and 32gb so total 48gb.. And it only showed the free memory of either the internal or the sdcard. And no google program allowed me to move it to the sdcard.. So all that work and having to reinstall everything and add in the accounts and such were rather useless.. Other than to see that samsung does have the option to format something as portable or adoptable.. Using the ADB shell ofcourse..
here you can add part of the sdcard to the adoptable memory and the rest as regular sdcard memory.. Rather pointless actually other than the adoptable memory is encrypted and unreadable on the pc using a card reader..
Using the ADB shell in the command within a windows command window.. I use TCC which is a replacement command.com for windows from long ago and works like the unix shell.. Microsoft has changed the command.com to cmd.com now and you can bring it up by typing CMD into the search programs and files window.
Type sm list-disks and record the disk IDs that come up like disk:179,64
use the format sm partition DISK:TYPE:RATIO to change the type...
Enter the disk ID where it says DISK, TYPE is either ‘private’ to adopt the entire microSD card or ‘mixed’ to use a portion of it. RATIO is only used if you select mixed. So a command would be something like: ‘sm partition disk:182:160 private’ to adopt the entire storage. Or ‘sm partition disk:182:160 mixed 50’ to adopt 50% of the microSD card.
sm partition disk:179,64 private
sm partition disk:179:64 mixed 50
also the command adb shell pm set-install-location 2
Which is supposed to set the location of the downloaded installs to the sdcard.. Which also does not really do much..
Now the command to turn that portable sdcard to adoptable..
adb shell sm set-force-adoptable true
would format the sdcard as adoptable.. Supposed to let you format it from the control panel and let you select portable or adoptable etc but not so.. You only get the option to format is as portable..
But internally it does have the option even if you normally cant get to it..
Well samsung pushed a new update from oct 18th and I got it a few days ago.. It was available for many months in like new zealand for some reason.. The oct update is named T355YDOU1BPJ1.. Since the last update was only a month before I was surprised as once its past an year samsung dont really care about such things.. so 2 updates in 3 months is kind of a shock..
Well anyway the update was like 440mb in size or the full mage is like 1.5gb.. It took over 15 minutes for it to re flash all the system files and over an hour to play with the apps.. so fully charge the device first..
I had the pixel launcher and it kept on crashing.. So went back to google now launcher which seemed stable.. And the tab was extremely slow to do anything.. For most things this is a rather fast tab even if the cpu is lame and slow at 1.2ghz only.. But for normal use it is fast for most things.. Sure wished I could go back.. I had it running for more than 2 days on a single charge by now.. Not really using it heavily but from a day it going to over 2 days is nice.. It gives almost 7-8 hours or playing or watching movies otherwise anyway.. Now the CPU was stuck above 50% and rebooting and all that after all the work was depressing..
But anyway now it is stable.. no reboots and speed seems to have come back to normal..
Now why would I post all this here.. Well that is because I just went and checked the free memory.. and WOW.. 3.5GB..... So it was migrating data off the internal memory to the adoptable sdcard memory before when it was acting up.. Yes that is an option now that shows up when you go to th storage internal memory option and once you use that ADB command to change it from portable to adoptable.. And it has given me an extra 2.5Gb of free memory.. How I dont know.. google still dont allow you to move their stuff to sdcard. Neither does microsoft and some others..
I suppose this new update actually moves the data part of those apps that does allow you to move them to sdcard to really move it to the sdcard like adoptable storage..
Well I dont know if this update also does the same thing with portable memory.. But before the data still stayed mostly in the internal memory even if the app could be moved to the sdcard.. OR the data was still in internal memory even after you moved it to the sdcard and there was a bug which never deleted the data from the android secure storage area and still took up space..
Apps like whatsapp wont let you move it to the sdcard now.. It could be moved before but the widgets would not work..
So those looking for debloated roms and such.. this might be a quick fix.. You can download the firmware yourself and use odin to flash it if you did not get the OTA.. I dont feel like voiding the warrenty on something that works so well.. Rooting and such is a real pain unless you want to spend a lot of time playing with things. But rooting and using titanium backup also lets you delete old system apps and replace it with new updates in the system partition and not use up valuable internal memory area.. Or it allows you to get rid of it entirely.. Just the Microsoft stuff takes up like a gb of space and they are useless apps all tied to online and their account and such. I suppose I am preparing myself for when the warranty runs out to root and get another 2gb of free space or so. by getting rid of the useless bloated apps but until then the 3.5gb of free internal memory will suffice. The sdcard has disappeared now from lock screen security and encrypt sd card says no sdcard present. and the entire memory is now encrypted.
https://samsung-firmware.org/all/
ps..my wife has a tab4 with a 64gb sdcard and even though it gives 2gb of free space out of the 8gb internal memory.. The facial recognization stay awake keeps storing useless pics and filling up the space even when the function is not used.. So every week have to delete 10,000 files to make space as it keeps saying no memory.. So samsung does not always fix bugs.. even though they pushed a security update earlier in the year for a 3 year old device.. it is like the little brother to this one and actually works much better if they fixed all the problems as this one is too big to carry around all day.. But this one is great when looking at maps travelling.
