I'm in NW Indiana and the past week has been horrible....3g has been slower than normal and almost non existent. Anyone else in the area or is it just my phone?

I've had unusable phone service for 7 months. I'm now leaving Sprint this week. They have told me the towers are being upgraded for seven months. Now they say they're finished, and the service is no better. It's a joke how horrific it is. We fought them and are getting almost $500 in credits now for the terrible half-year we've had. That'll just about cover my early termination fee, haha. Good luck to you.

im in a southwestern suburb of chicago and its been hell for 3 months now. dropped calls, missed texts, and even better is people don't get the pictures i send them. they just disappear... idk ive gotten the past 2 months free so i guess i can deal even tho they told me the 3 towers in my town getting upgraded would be done last month on the 7th... it amazes me how towns that were scheduled for completion a whole month after the ones in my town have been done for weeks and im still getting the shaft...
All of Chicago is nearly unusable. It won't get any better until early 2013 is my guess. I can't hold a call at all, and data is so slow I can't even stream Pandora. You're not alone. Sure, a few towers here and there have LTE but by and large the whole market is awful.

it was bad by me SW burbs... for about 2 months... then they finished the NV upgrades in my area and I've noticed much faster 3G speeds... my wife's family in the west burbs are going through what we went through now... sounds like you are too... stick it out if you can... call sprint to try and get a credit... and soon enough hopefully we will be able to enjoy LTE... the few times I happened to be near a tower that was on the speeds were amazing and it gives me hope for sprint
Ok, I knew something strange was going on. I'm from NY, but I'm in the Chicago area quite often. I was driving across I-90 yesterday and when I got to Gary, IN, my phone kept bouncing back and forth from 3G to 1X. I knew something was wrong because I've driven through there many times in the past and would always get 4G LTE service. It was pretty much the same horrible service as I passed through Chicago... my phone even went into Roaming mode twice. I'm in La Grange, IL now and the service is pretty poor here too. I did receive full strength 4G LTE service while I was in Yorksville, IL last night and this morning, but my phone wouldn't hold the signal. I would be completely stationary and then the signal would disappear and go back to 3G. It was like Sprint was turning it on and off or something.
Really bad where I'm at. NW Chicago. But its especially bad at home. I can't receive calls at all when I'm home. Sometimes receive txts late
The reception of this thread is not good in general... gonna put it in Q and A where it should have been and it may get better reception...
dude i work at sprints largest 3rd party retailer. for the past 7 months, maybe since march, They tell us to tell you guys that there is maintenance on the towers. we have 10-20 new people come in a day asking why their phone sucks. As we speak, my phone has no data connection

I can't even call people on sprint. Just says call can't be completed. But can call other cell phone users. Brought phone in and was told b.s. so close to buying out and going to a usable network.

I did that recently and am so happy I did. Worth the money. Verizon has the new shared data plans, so it only costs me about $8 more per month. Completely worth it. Reliable phone signal everywhere I go, and blazing fast Internet everywhere too. I flip off Sprint every time I drive past one of their stores. They are liars and morons with terrible service right now in Chicago (has been since March).

I'm in Joliet and have called sprint more times in the last 7 months than I have in the previous ten years. For 6 and a half months it was "we are working on the towers, bear with us and you will be amazed at the new service and glad you stuck it out"
Well Joliet is officially "up and running' I have three towers within a two mile radius of my house, the closest being .07 tenths of a mile a way. Guess who still dont have reliable 4G?! Last night it was on but I had 256kbps down and 2.5m up. Today I called them while I was literally sitting underneath the tower. I had no 4G on my LTE phone and my wifes evo was in 3G gettting a blazing fast 561ms ping, 19kbps down and 29kbps up!
CRAP!
Nothing has changed. the service still sucks, srint still gives me a different answer ecverytime I call. Meanwhile I can't stream Pandora, Tune in Radio or watch a you tube video even at the lowest of settings. If Verizon had an unlimited data plan...I would be gone....what to do?!??!

They basically say Sprint lags behind everyone in 3G and 4G. I personally get really good 3G speeds (>1mbps), and 4G when I can get it but it is not at my house or work. Just in between. Not wanting to be a whiner. I feel like when Sprint rolls out LTE and Network Vision everywhere we'll be back. I'm rather happy with my wireless data, but it seems we are right now missing out on a lot.
My 3g speeds are just pathetic now. They used to be decent, like in the 800 plus range at work. Now I'm lucky if I pull 100kbps. Plus I always drop in and out and even go to roaming sometimes. Please hurry up the roll out sprint.

Sprint DOES lag behind on network speeds. Even with the upgrades they've done in my area. Things have improved, but I don't think they're anything to brag about. Even 4G wimax when I have a strong signal is pitiful. There are times I feel 4G wimax is like AT&T or T-Mobile 3G. I don't complain, really, because it's fast enough for me to get by. But... congrats on taking the red pill and waking up

I kind of feel like this also. In a year or so from now, I expect to have fast LTE and good 3G as a backup. If that is not the case I may go elsewhere. Allthough I hate to lose unlimited data and the other perks of being with sprint.
my 3g and now 4g speeds are pretty pathetic. 3g is 100k most of the time except in the evenings when the towers are so overloaded it drops to 1x or 3g will just timeout on everything and 4g is now down to anywhere between 200k and 500k during the evening and 1.5-2mb during the rest of the time. yet sprint continues to say theres no problems in the area lol.
This is definitely not news. My Sprint service has sucked for a while now.
I'm roaming often, and when I'm not roaming the signal is weak. When I'm lucky enough to get a good signal, 3G is still slower than dial up speeds, and 4G is slower than Verizon's 3G.
Sprint is in real trouble if they don't fix this. The only reason I am still with them is because I really do like my Evo 3D. No other carrier has a comparable phone, and I'm stuck in a contract anyway.
If Verizon got a Samsung Galaxy S 3D, I'd probably break my contract with Sprint to go to Verizon.
Who cares about unlimited data if it's practically unusable in most real world scenarios?
My city isn't even on the list of future LTE markets yet either, so I'm not holding my breath for that. I do have Wimax, but it's pretty crappy.
Sprint has totally fell off. I remember a few years ago when Sprint used to consistently be first or second in these data speed comparisons. Now I would have been shocked if they weren't picked last. And I'm sure most Sprint customers would have also been shocked if Sprint was anything but last in this most recent comparison.
Sprint has got more and more expensive over the years, and the service has got worse and worse. Not a very good outlook for the future at all.

as soon as there network is upgraded... they will morph right into verizon's evil twin. price, and everything. just watch.
the only thing keeping them from not charging an ass load of money is that they are being outperformed in network capability in a lot of areas. i am fortunate to live in an area with very good 4g and 3g, so i can't complain. but man i sure feel your guys' pain with the slow network ****. that would be frustrating. it's like paying for wifi and your wifi is never working or never running fast.

They already aren't that much cheaper than Verizon anymore. I think last time I checked Sprint was like $5 a month cheaper or something like that. And that wasn't even factoring all the nickel and dime fees Sprint puts on there.
The only thing Sprint has on Verizon these days is unlimited data. The price isn't a big enough difference to really be a factor. And the unlimited data isn't really a factor (to me at least) if it's too slow to use. Sprint's just lucky their network went to **** after they already had me locked into a contract. And even then, I'd have probably left if I could get a phone comparable to the Evo 3D on another network.
Sprint did the same thing that AT&T when they got the iPhone...they didn't anticipate all the traffic on their network thus not preparing for it. I am holding out though. By the end of the year, a lot of us will have a great network to go with the unlimited data. And will be better than all the others.

The problem with these anecdotal tests is they mean very little in your town. When I worked downtown, Sprint was 800kbps. Not blazing, but amazing compared to AT&Ts 20kbps or Verizons 50.
Different side of town? Sprint is 100 and not very useful. And if I drive 3 minutes away I'm getting 1100.
The best thing to do is do a speed test and get people on other carriers to do them right next to you

Yup true I did the 4g against Verizon test he hit 11mbps I hit 10mbps the only difference was ping his was 58 while mines was 101

thats true, if i head to the **** side of town i can get good 3g speeds but no 4g lol. or if im around a sprint store they make sure the towers are working perfect. just some observations ive experienced here in san antonio. hell around my parents house half the time i get network busy when trying to make a call. sprint says theres no problems that the network is working as it should haha. they get all pissed when i ask them so for 200+ a month im not supposed to beable to make a phone call and have data speeds that are so ****ty it basically turns my phone into a cool looking paper weight.
I get 900kbps to burst speeds of 1.5mbps most days. Just heard from a couple of sources that I'm getting 4g in a month or two

Didnt check 3g as Im always on 4g but you guys are right. 3g slowed down for me too. Used to get 1000+kbps now down to 700kpbs.

I'm lucky if I get 300kbps in my home area. Luckily, I found out they took down the closest tower in light of the fact of upgrading the others to network vision and haven't yet...so I complained. Until then...it's non-stop bill credits. I'm making them pay for the lack of service. I ask what I get over someone with a $50/mon prepay plan other than the fancy phone I bought...the answer? Nadda.
Pisses me off that we'll have to get new phones again to take advantage of the 4G LTE. Thanks a lot.
Just got off chat with Sprint rep admitting there is an outage. My service has gone from 5 bars to "No Service" and back.
I thought it was related to the VM FW I'd installed earlier this week (hoping to fix that ICS VM flash thing) but it appears it's something big.
Anyone else affected?

Big issues in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. They told us it wouldn't be fixed for a while and they allowed us to exit our contract without an etf.

I am considering leaving but now is not a good time to switch. I would probably go to ATT and the phone i want probably wont be out for about a month. I would kick myself if i had to get a phone that's already been out for 6 months just to have the galaxy s III eat it's lunch a month later. The other option is ATT, which would be more reasonable with the family plan that we need and and they have a solid phone in the One X. The only problem with that though is they do not get good service within my house which is ridiculous (and i'd rather have the evo lte).

Was happening last week here in vacaville Ca. And my over all indoor signal strength is **** now everywhere.
Major issues when I was working in Detroit today. Bars on the phone went from full to nothing to 1 to full to 1, all within a matter of seconds. Data was slow (as usual with sprint) however most of the day my phone couldn't even connect to 3g or 1x. When it did, it was constantly switching from 3g to 1x. Phone calls would go through maybe 1 out of 10 times. I sent texts to about 10 different people today, I just got to the airport and called all of them, NONE of them got a single text from me today, even though my phone reports them as being sent.

Service is damn good. Internet speed where i live, not so much. Im lucky to get over 200kbs on 3g but i mean, everything loads just fine. The only time you notice is when you are literally downloading something. Other than that, ive been with sprint for 6 years now and im satisfied. Ive never had any real issues. Having never had us cellular though im not sure how to compare the two.

Talk to people in your area and see what their service and speeds are like. In my area I'm averaging 170kbps on 3G for the past year. This is slower than what I got ten years ago on Sprint using a flip phone and 230k hack. Other than that, voice service is good.
The only reason I'm still on Sprint is cost vs data usage. If a GSM carrier offered the same amount of data at the same cost I'd drop Sprint in a heartbeat.

I have been with sprint for a year now n never had any problems. I love the photon. In my area(Kansas city) I get around 2mbps on 3g, never used my phone on 4g yet so not sure boot those speeds. I don't get 4g at my house. But I would definitely recommend joining sprint. I love the unlimited data on my rooted photon. I use close to 60gb of data per month. U can't do that with anyother company.
Like mention before check for feedback with people in your area, Im also one of the unlucky ones to get bad 3g about 180kps when Im lucky. However I talked on the phone for hours with sprint yesterday and I can tell you theyre great at customer service and one of the guys that I spoke to confimed that sprint is updating alot of their towers across the US including many around my area. Hopefully yours is already good.
I love sprint i get 1-2 mbps everywhere i go and always hae service when no one does ALWAYS I LOVE IT

I have been with Sprint for over 10 years now, while I am satisfied with the service in general, I wouldn't I say I am happy.
The reason is, their prices....yes their prices. They charge $70 a month for unlimited everything. Fine! It is a great deal compared to the other carriers.
However, their speeds suck, really suck. Some users are lucky enough to be near a good coverage site, but I regularly get between 50Kbps & 250Kbps.
Plus they have the BS $10 charge for Premium Data....what Premium Data? Heck, I can't even get normal data where I live & work. I get stuck sending messages using GVoice, market won't open up. If I switch to WiFi everything will work just fine.
Anyway, the reason I stuck with Sprint was they offered me a huge monthly discount on my bill to move to a smartphone (in Dec. 2010). Plus, their LTE network should be up in 2013 and they are decommissioning their IDEN network and re-purposing the spectrum for LTE (or so I've read).
Their unlimited everything plan is great for people who really use a lot of data and have good coverage. For people like me, who barely use 200MB/month its a waste, if I leave data sync on 24/7 I might push 750MB....that's it. If they had tiered data plans, I would switch to that in an instant.
In any case, if you are happy at US Cellular, there is no need to switch. Wait and see how all of this plays out.
Also, call them and ask for incentives to switch over to them. First month free, 20%-25% off etc. You may not get it the first time but call every few weeks and see if you get lucky, especially near the end of the year.

I have been with sprint for at least 6 years, maybe more. Don't really remember when I first signed up with them. I have not really had much problems with them. Their customer service has only gotten better since I first signed up, however I liked their old phone upgrade plan better than this new one.
I don't get 4g at my house, but that doesn't bother me much because 3g works pretty well, and I almost always have wifi available.

im from north central iowa had sprint for less than a year, no 3g just 1x and no plans on 3g for atleast 2 years, was in roam allot, so sprint and i decided to part ways, back with us cellular and very happy with speeds and coverages. just my 2 cents
First off phone is awesome! I do have a pre order for an s3 from best buy though, so I will be running stock for at least 29 days and putting the phone through its paces. I came from Verizon and the service was overpriced for what I was getting but data speeds were great most of the time. I can deal with this on sprint by using WiFi more which is in abundance on long island. I know sprint is upgrading service, but did I make a mistake leaving Verizon?
If you have access to wifi at home and work you should be good. This is a great phone

Not sure if your reference to the "29 Days" is to the trial period of the phone before committing to it. On Sprint, it has been reduced to 14 Days.... just thought I would throw that out there if you thought you had 30 days to decided if you wanted to keep the phone or not.

You made the right choice - unlimited data; cheaper prices; network vision upgrade in progress.
The key is wifi. If you have access to it then you be fine. Sprints customer service is by far better then Verizon. By the way, sprints data isnt as bad as most make it out to be. I wont use it for things like downloading roms or watching videos on netflixs or YouTube. But for radio apps and normal emailing and web browsing i think you'll be fine, i know i am.

The only thing I am concerned about is their quickness to implement the changes. Once all the tower get the software upgrade, it will be legit. They went this route because had they stuck with wimax it would have meant building a LOT more towers... LTE means updating the existing ones, getting 3 or 4 times the range, and maybe building a few more in necessary areas.
Their initial plan was just simply to be the first to have true 4G... which they did successfully. But in my opinion it nipped them in the ass because as soon as everybody got their LTE implemented, it blew the balls off sprint's low range, high spectrum network, and made their "4G" look like a joke.
They are fools, but so is anybody who outrightly decides to go with them knowing their history and then complains about it. Jeez i get so sick of reading threads "o ma you'll never guess what sprint did to me!!!!" .... like stfu and blame yourself for signing the contract.
anyways, little bit of a rant, but once they get LTE up and running it will be nice, and they will. every single place there is a 4g tower, there will be LTE. and in the mean time, more towers will go up.
Service seems good so far been streaming Pandora with no buffering but Sirius xm buffers like a sob
Well, its a sad day. Returned the evo lte due to constant roaming and data drops and weak signal, For a photon. huge downgrade, but at least the photon gets constant data at a respectful speed for me. Im really disappointed about this situation and hope my galaxy s3 pre order comes in right away so I could give it a shot, if not ill go back to the evo lte and hope radio updates help it. Never been this disappointed before over a phone because i really was enjoying the other aspects of it. Photon will at least get wimax in my area. are the data drops and lack of signal reception due to hardware issues with the lte?

Is anyone in the cities/communities that LTE went live in, connecting to the network and maintaining the connection? I am in San Antonio, and have only had LTE connect once and that was before the network went live. I checked the coverage map and it says it should connect but I am having no luck. I have read in other threads that people connect for a few seconds then go back to 3G service. I just wanted to see what everone else's mileage is. Thanks

the sprint maps arent accurate as of right now. the towers havent all been upgraded. that map is more a representation of coverage once there done. i was holding a stable 4g connection down in the quarry saturday afternoon.
I saw the 4g icon once about a month ago. And it was so sporadic I couldn't do anything with it.
Now that it's officially live in KC. Still haven't seen anything. Stuck on 3g and I'm about a mile and a half from the Sprint campus.
I was out of town last week and was hoping to come back to LTE. Sprint said the 15th, so I guess shouldn't expect much until the end of the month.
I am in DFW and where I live I get nothing.. not even a blip of 4G turning on. Where I work it turns on but it usually flips right back to 3G. I was able to hold it for about 15 mins at one point this morning but thats been it.
Unfortunately for me 3G coverage on my towers is god awful to the point im tempted to activate my OGEvo and use wimax till this is sorted.
I live 3 blocks from the sprint compound in KC and haven't seen a hair of LTE. Odd.
San Antonio, no service yet. Coverage map might be a prediction of complete service and not an actual "current service“ map

Went outside during lunch and did pick up 4g.
Ran a speedtest, 1.5 down, about the same up. Not real impressive. Although still better then the non-existent 3g as of late.
As soon as I walk back in the building it goes back to 3g.
I am in San Antonio as well, and no, it goes crazy 4G-3G-4G-3G etc etc but it does not maintain 4G... it switches back to 3G and stays there... if I force it to stay on 4G (##DATA#) it get good solid 4G speeds at one point 10down 8up... but it wont make or receive phone calls, if I reboot I get a "the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly"
I seriously hope things improve in terms of the network. It would be a shame if all this NV stuff Sprint talked about was just hype.... I know LTE just went live but it should atleast be able to grab a decent connection. Let's just hope it can penetrate better and be more reliable than WiMAX....

I was able to get LTE in the 1604/I10 area Friday night but now its nowhere to be found. I spoke with a customer rep and they did say that it will be a work in progress as they are making some sort of adjustments to the towers and that when that happens they may be taken down to make the switch and the overload of traffic on other towers is causing it to not connect properly to the LTE servers. I would have thought that this transition would have been made before going live but apparently not. Hopefully over the next few days the network gain strength.
Odessa texas here, Nothin man, nada. What pisses me off is that we're paying for 4g service and we cannt even get it. like paying for a meal you cant eat, a car you cant drive, a hooker you cant,,,,ok thats too much, Anyways you know what im saying ,,,right?
Another person in SA with no 4G here. I carpooled this morning and saw nothing the whole way to work. (Bandera & 1604 across 151 and then to Culebra & 410 if we're mapping this). Went out for lunch and didn't get any signal either. Oh well, I guess we'll see how things look in a week or so.
I talked to a Sprint rep and they said they are still working to get the coverage shown on the map for LTE. I gave them a couple zip codes and they came back and said they should go live soon
Try getting a hold of a Sprint rep on chat/phone and give them your zip if you are supposed to be getting LTE according to the map.
Personally I am getting blazing speeds in the south but 0 LTE in the north. I am being patient :angel:
I'm not in San Antonio at the moment. Live in Los Angeles and well...I'll let my screenshot speak for it's self.

The 10$ is for any smartphone regardless of 4g or not. They changed that charge a long time ago. Its premium data now. Every company does this..no big deal.

Originally it was a WiMAX charge but then they figured out that they couldn't legally charge for their WiMAX unless it was actually up and running in their entire proposed network. They then said it was for all smartphones to get around it. Yes its not a big deal because sprint is still cheaper than the other carriers but they still don't have a completely functioning WiMAX/lte network. We all know its a 4g charge no matter what they call it

Dacula, GA here. Got a 4g signal about a month ago, but only for a short while. Now the coverage map says that I am covered, but I haven't gotten any signal. So like everyone is saying, the map is pretty inaccurate right now. Hopefully i'll get some connection by the end of this month.
This is the best I could do today in the Vinings GA (burbs of of ATL) area. 4G has been flashing since Mon for me. It lasts for less than 5 mins, but long enough for me to do a few speed tests. 4G also flashes at my home, but its very brief. What's crazy is today I was told about the Open Signal app, so I downloaded it. It's really helpful... What I didn't know was the tower I see near my job is a Sprint Tower. I also have another tower about a mile away. I saw today I caught 4G from both. Makes me wonder what's really up? The tower is right outside my office, so is the LTE signal that weak, or are there some kind of signal/antenna issues? Oh by the way, the Sprint Tower is also really close to where I live. It's about 0.2-0.3 miles away...
