Dear TF201 prime owners,
Like a lot of owners in this forum, My prime experience had been less than ideal. Last week, I emailed asus expressing just how horrible the prime is for some of us and how is has been nothing but a paperweight. Well, I got a reply back from ASUS and apparently they are aware of the this situation and there might be a remedy similar to that of the Dongle. Here is the reply:
I do apologize for the issues you have experienced while using your TF201 tablet. ASUS values its customers, and we are in the process of finalizing another remedy in addition to the dongle. We expect notification of this remedy to go out within the next few months. Unfortunately, I do not have any further details on what is being done.
Let the speculation begin.

Good morning Mr. Das,
I do apologize for the issues you have experienced while using your TF201 tablet. ASUS values its customers, and we are in the process of finalizing another remedy in addition to the dongle. We expect notification of this remedy to go out within the next few months. Unfortunately, I do not have any further details on what is being done.
The latest release of this firmware is 10.4.2.15 (JB 4.1.1) which can be downloaded at the following link: http://support.asus.com/Download.as...zip#US_epad_user_10_4_2_15_UpdateLauncher.zip

Yea, now we get to carry two dongles with us and swap them. How badazz is that?
Maybe it will be a dongle with 4G + Extra battery + Stereo Speakers + Pico Projector + 256GB extra storage.
Yep defiantly gonna be that!

Sounds to me like it'll be a wifi dongle, unfortunatly alot of us have unlocked so i wonder how many of us will actually recieve it.
If it is a wifi dongle, i hope they listened to the negative comments about its design and include a passthrough so you can still charge the damn thing.
Perhaps it will be a Wifi + GPS dongle ... and if not, how long will it take to mod and include both in one ... hey ho

a permanent solution for the wifi will be eventually appreciated, even though I seriously don't believe this happening...
I would love a wifi dongle! But somehow make it compatible with the dock? lol
Maybe a faster internal memory dongle too.
...I don't see any of these things happening, guys. The Prime didn't sell well enough for a free solution to pay for itself in customer goodwill.
If it was decent, I'd consider paying a small amount for a WiFi/Internal Memory fix but I don't expect it would be free.

What do you mean pay for it? We already did pay for it and what we got in return was crappy internal memory, subpar wifi, and nonfunctioning gps unlong with 10 months of promises of software updates to fix it. Things have only gotten worse. My Prime ran better on honeycomb than it does now. I can't even use gmail without getting kicked out let alone try to play a game.
Just send me a $300 check and a hammer, and I ll happily smash this tablet+docking. Asus just denied my RMA for a broken charger and told me to buy a new one.
Hey, I see that your device is unlocked, so no warranty, bye.
My wifi barely works and I have to use my cellphone for wifi-tethering all the time. GPS? forget about it.
I'm betting it will be a $100 towards an ASUS tablet purchase in the near future (fine print: excludes Google Nexus 7). I'm hoping for something else though.

I was PMed too and sent a log tool and have been sending logs to someone from their dev team in Taiwan just got a update from him that they will be contacting me because I have a "special" Prime hopefully its special enough that they swap it out for a new one for me
I wonder if this isn't the first step towards reaching some kind of resolution to this whole mess. ASUS does need to know exactly what's going on before they take any actions at fixing anything.

keep us posted. Especially on wifi, BT, and GPS. or if they modified the back in anyway for you.
Willing to bet they had a bad batch out of manufacturing or something. This happens sometime.
Honestly, I have been using Asus products for a long time and have always been happy with them. They have not been in the business of making consumer products for that long. I think they really want this to be a great product and have everyone happy.
This is why the encrypted, locked bootloader was such a surprise and disappointment considering they started as a brand known only to system builders.
Well, Asus must not be reading anything I am writing, including the ticket on their website I sent 2 days ago.
I have "Serial Number Unknown" and cannot update my prime. I filled out a Tech Ticket on asus.com, registered it, did all of that.
Anyways, Asus is running out of time, if they are not going to respond to my tech ticket by the end of the day, I am returning it after work.
I have been extremely unhappy with Asus. Their misinformation everytime someone calls them. The fact they keep denying that ICS 4.0 was released and we are already getting 4.03, the fact that mine has "Serial Number Unknown" and Asus will not respond to me.
Why should I give them $500 if they dont appreciate me enough to try to help me? They wont respond to my ticket? This is ridiculous and I am basically laughing at all of you calling Asus a great company.
HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN READING WHAT IS GOING ON ? Asus has handled all of these issues as poorly has possible. They are denying 4.0 was released and telling us "Serial Number Unknown" users to just wait, there is no updated firmware. Yeah, wait until we cannot return it?
What about the way the GPS issue was dealt with? Dont get me started on how long people have waited for their tablet to be serviced.
I can understand if you like Asus, but to say they are a great company may have been true before the Asus Prime release, but since then they have got to be have the worst Customer Service I have ever seen.
Well, using that email:
[email protected]
I sent them this:
Hello,
I'm looking for support for with my Transformer Prime. The errors I have experienced are as follows:
It has an unknown serial number preventing me from receiving any OTA updates.
It has rebooted randomly 3 times.
The screen has scrambled leaving horizontal lines with unreadable text while browsing until the tablet screen was turned off and turned back on.
Wifi turns off commonly while the tablet is idle.
Wifi plus bluetooth connected at the same time slows down the tablet to 300 kbps (kilobits) download connection speed.
Problems with certain apps which force close (that other people do not have problems with).
I do not want to return this tablet to Best Buy, but if there is no fix for it within the next 8 days (amount of time I have to return it) I will be forced to do so as this is not what I paid for.
Thank you. Awaiting your response,

I got the pm as well requesting some info about my issues and my tablet S/N. I replied back to it but have not heard back since then. For me time is very important if I don't hear something today, I will be returning my TP because right now it is just an expensive paper weight.

I registered my device, then used their Tech Ticket or whatever option to let them know my problems. It uses my Serial Number, Build Number, etc in the email. So they know everything about my Prime.
They have not responded, and I dont expect them to meet their 48 hour response window at all, as others are having the same problems.
I am returning, and probably buying something later from a different company. I know everyone here loves Asus, and many think they are a "great" company. But my experiences so far, personally, plus everyones I am reading and hearing on forums like these, have been so disappointing.
I am a 6th Grade School Teacher and nobody understands patience any more than me. Asus is really trying my patience with them, thus, I am not comfortable giving them my money. If they are not going to help me with a simple software problem, "Serial Number Unknown, which has been an issue for people since the middle of December, then what are they going to do when I have a hardware issue and have to send it in?
I gave Asus a chance. I wanted to buy a Prime, I want to keep my Prime, I actually really like it, but my problems are ignored, and I am going to ignore Asus with my money. Sorry!
This has been good for me and my students because I have been very open about these issues with them. I was so excited to get the tablet, I showed it to them. I brought it to school, let them play with it, they thought it was "awesome." Now I have been explaining the aftermath, cannot update, all the issues others are having. I am trying to teach them to stand up and not simply "accept mediocrity."
We also have only spent a few minutes at the end of the day on this, but I was going to use the tablet with them in class since HDMI out could go straight into my LCD Projector. I had to explain why they wouldn't see the tablet anymore.
If you have a problem with your TP, SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE! Thanks

So with all the new Asus tablets coming out, one could only wonder, When is Asus going to let us RMA our Primes to get a new back plate with the plastic top so the GPS and Wifi can work as it should? Any thoughts? I like the one on the new Infinity tablet. It still has the cool swirly metal look.

100% chance they're not replacing the backplate. The cost does not outweigh the PR. Been there done that...
You've got way less than 1% of owners for the total shipped units requesting such a fix.
The impact of perhaps making some subset of this 1% unhappy does not out-weigh the cost of replacement.

Anyway, I was just wondering if Asus might want to do right by all the Prime owners since they have stated that the all metal plate is a problem with gps and wifi and the two new devices that where just announced have all plastic or a plastic strip/metal back plates.
Could it really be that expensive to replace it?

Personally, I think its more than 1%. So people may have a Prime that don't post on this website, but it seems that atleast 75% of the people with Primes that do post on this website have problems with either GPS or Wifi as a result of the all metal backplate.

Have you looked at the tear down videos of the prime? Some components are actually part of and attached to what you call the "backplate". What would the pogo plugs attach to with a window?
Shipping costs?
The fact that less than 1% have the problem OR are dissatisfied?
I think it would be a nice gesture from ASUS. It would certainly make you people who just love to slam ASUS think twice... It would also change the minds of people who might not buy ASUS again due to the blunders. Never underestimate the power of goodwill.

Overall, I enjoy my Prime. However, I can say with 100% certainty that I will never be buying another Asus product ever again. The padfone and tablet they just announced sound awesome, but I didn't even bother looking at pictures and videos of them because they're from Asus, and I am done with this company.
A gesture of goodwill would certainly change my outlook, but as has already been said, it's just not economically viable for Asus. I hope I'm not the only customer they lose. I've never been so disappointed in a company.
The idea that this would be an easy and inexpensive fix for ASUS to implement presumes that there are no structural or other changes necessary to support a two-piece backplate. We have no idea what the inside of the TF700 looks like, nor how much retrofitting ASUS would need to do.
I don't think it's very likely, unfortunately.
i wonder if some 3rd party company can make one? i would pay for a back plate exchange. If it worked like its suppose to.
wow, haven't seen a thread like this before

So you enjoy the prime but wont buy another product from the company? That seems a bit harsh and dumb. If I had your attitude I wouldn't buy any LG products from now on. Considering how much of a problem the LG Optimus 3D has given me and they wouldn't even admit to the problems everyone is having and won't push out system updates in a timely fashion(Still stuck on froyo).
Honestly if you have problems with the device to a point you wouldn't want to buy anything from that company then don't use their products at all just sell/return it and move on.
Asus took off GPS on the damn labels, remember? Now all of a sudden they have a GPS dongle? This company doesn't know which way they are going at all. Excuse me, there is no GPS in that tablet it is not on the label but we have this GPS dongle for you that won't fix your BT/WIFI issue. Trust me, it is another way Asus will find out how to make more money on. Somehow.
Don't be such a baby.
You're mad that they backtracked on removing GPS from the spec? This is more than just acknowledging the issue. If it works, it's an actual fix, even if you do now need to carry another accessory with you.

I think wifi was about 98% of the reason for dissatisfaction and gps was about 2% its just gps was a more valid point when trying to get a refund because the wi-fi worked it just blew donkey nuts where the gps was non existent. so u wanna flame someone flame all the people that called asus *****ing relentlessly about the gps when they could of gave 2 sh*ts about it.
I hope you get better soon...
Hello fellow Transformers! Since my Prime went down because of a 40pin connector failure (actually more of a user failure lol), I now have no use for the GPS Dongle. I know I won't need it for my TF300, so I decided to just give it away to the less fortunate ones who were not able to get one from ASUS.
I've only really used the dongle 3 times and it worked great...giving me a lock in location time of less than 10 secs.
How to get it? Very easy. Send me a box of Chocolates (preferrably Ferrero Rocher) and inside the box include a prepaid shipping label and I will send it to you. Fair Deal? Lol.
Oh and don't forget to hit the THANKS button!

Change of topic. Original topic was a "Can you return the prime in Canada" thread. Since i personally have succeeded, i am now sharing how i did it so you can do it too!
First: Make sure you have all accessories: Charger, cleaning cloth, usb cable, manuals, etc.
Tablet has to be scratch free and in very good condition. Try to clean all the fingerprints as best you can.
If you have the plastic wrapper that goes around it, bonus!
Put tablet in box as if it were brand new. Neatly wrap the cord, make it all look pretty.
Make sure the tablet is charged and reset it so when you turn it on it goes to the default setup thing.
Dont forget to remove your microSD card!
Go to your local bestbuy.
Tell them you got it as a gift
You opened it up and played with it for a few days and decided its not for you
you would like a return please. (Be kind, they are people too!)
Another option is to say "they got the wrong one" when you ask for the refund. If they ask if you want to find the right one say you dont really have time right now, you'd rather the refund and you can come back another time to get the tablet thats right for you.
They will want to inspect it. If you have obvious physical damage, forget it. If you dont have the packaging, forget it. If you give them ANY reason to reject it, forget it. Dont lie but you dont have to give them obvious reasons. "I just dont want it" is true. "I want to return it because the new version came out" Also true but a bad idea.
They will likely ask if you have the recipt. Tell them you dont have a recipt, it was a gift, the person who gave it to you didnt think to keep it. (I said it was from my grandmother who lives in another city, whatever seems plausable)
They will tell you they cant return it for cash but can do store credit. You say thats acceptable and try not to smile too big. (Also helps not to agree too fast). I made some comment "thats fine, i can buy something that better suits what i need when i get paid". If they offer to help you find something to buy with the card right away just say you really dont have too long to spend on this, you can come back another day to spend the money.
Edit:
Dont forget! when you go to buy the infinity bring a printout of these two pages and get the infinity for $350 instead of $500! It helps to email yourself the links so you can bring them up on your phone too. Bestbuy matches online prices now! (woot!)

I don't think anyone is going to have luck until the actual release date (August 17th). Before then there is really no point to try an exchange.

How the heck did you manage that? Who do i contact!
I live in Alberta and I have tried numerous time to return my prime for an infinity at different location. All locations were ready to send it to Asus for repair and they don't really care about the manufacturers warranty, they just want to send it to Asus to take care of it.

I know its sort of beside the point but what issue did you have to RMA it in for? how did they determine it was better to give you money than try to fix it?

I'd definitely like to know this too!! I've had mine since January- bought it from Staples. I had problems within the first month, but they just told me I had to go through Asus (even though they told me I had 30 days to return when I purchased it!!). I haven't RMA'd after reading all the horror stories on the forums, and I keep hoping an impending update will fix things (silly I know...). I'm so frustrated with the whole experience, and reading about what is going on now in the US for BB customers is just making it worse! I'd love to hear if there is anything we can do up in Canada...
I RMA'd mine. I'm waiting for the information package and how to send it. It was fine at the beginning but after a few months I started to have screen glitches, flickers. My Wifi is some what weak to none existant where my wife's Ipad does not have a problem. The number of freezes it can have is unbearable.

So how did it take in total since you initiated the process? I think I may be fed up enough to do it- I was willing to wait and see what good firmware updates did, but it's been 6 months... I'm moving soon though, so I might have to wait until the fall if the process is too long. The last thing I need right now is for it to get lost in the mail!!

Please post when you get the info-- I'm nervous about RMAs, and I'd really like more info on how Asus is handling them up here...
Has anyone heard of RMAs in Canada that have actually improved the Prime (in cases where the original was "fixed" and returned)?

Once my Prime is sent back to me from its RMA I can post my thoughts on any improvements to my tablets overall performance.
I just got my prime back today, after sending it in exactly one month ago, to fix the green camera issue. I had to call them up to escalate the issue last week, because it was taking so long.
Anyway, they returned it good as new. They also replaced the cracked back panel, which was nice.

I'm in Ottawa too, and I'll like to try to get an exchange too. Which store did you do yours at? Also, how did you pitch it? Kinda like "I got this as a gift and it's been plagued with problems"?
So i just got back from BB
Walked in, told the guy i got it as a gift, didnt want or need it, wanted to return it
He asked if i had a recipt
i said nope, was a gift from my grandma out of town
he asked if theres any chance i could get the recipt
i said not likely, shes old and forgets things
he said without a recipt they cant return it for cash, tho he could do store credit
i said thats awesome, i was thinking about getting a laptop anyways
processed the return, turned it on to make sure its going strong, checked i had the accessories, all was well. Got me a gift card for when the store has 700's in stock. woot!
