Where do I start? I'm totally newb and firmware and stuff like that. What am I suppose to do? What is rooting? What are the chances of totally screwing up my phone? And what is the lag fix? I basically need help with everything and I also want to know what you can do to a rooted phone and what are benefits? I already know the cons
Thanks, any help is appreciated
Oh, and if I get Froyo or whatever, will I be able to still get TMO updates if the official Froyo ever comes out?

Very very very well done job on that sticky btw man!
Also, to answer your first question... download OCLF from the market, it's free and so very simple to use

The chances of something going wrong with JUST rooting your phone are very low. The only thing that can go wrong is if you are hardware locked and still attempt to root, then you can **** up your phone. So make sure you are NOT hardware locked. and you will be fine bro
* When i first started getting into the xda thing, i was right in your place. And the Vibrant Bible in the android dev section really helped me out. Just look at everything in there.
*If you are only rooted, then you will still get OTA's
how do you know if you have a "hardware lock" vibrant?

First please read XDA rules #1 & #15. There is a Q&A both here and in the device forum where I quickly searched and found this post on how to restore your phone to stock.
Your phones forum is really the best place to ask such a specific question. Ranting in the General Discussion/General section will only get you generalities.
good luck with your phone. Ya shulda boughta SONY

Here is a guide I have put together for the VZW Samsung SCH-I605 Galaxy Note II
------------------
This guide contains 5 sections:
Section 1: How to Root/ Return to Stock 4.1.1 Jelly Bean coming from any rom with Odin
--------------------
Section 1b: How to return to stock 4.1.1 Jelly Bean coming from any rom with Odin
Step 1: Download and install Odin3 from section 1a if you have not already done so.
Step 2: Download this stock VRALJB image and pit file to a windows based pc.
Folks that have accepted the L4 OTA can not use the VRALJB image at this time...for now use Root66 from section 1a.
Official VRALJB 4.1.1 12/9/12- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040264(This will wipe data and return your device to factory stock like the day you purchased the device. Also Unlocked and Locked devices may use this to return to Factory Stock conditions!)
SCH-I605_16gb.Pit- http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?05cj895zu3tls7z
Step 3: Power device off, hold the volume down/home/power keys until you see a yellow triangle, then press the volume up key to access "odin or download mode".
Step 4: Open Odin and connect the oem usb cable from pc to device. The driver should automatically install( it did for me on windows 7 64bit). There should also be a "comport number" in upper left hand corner of Odin indicating communication between the pc & device.
Step 5: Click on the pit function of Odin and select the sch-i605-16gb.pit file.
Step 6: Click on the PDA function of Odin. Select the stock VRALJB image you downloaded in step 1, then select start. This operation should take less than 8 minutes before Odin will say pass/reset.
Step 7: Your device should boot back up into factory stock 4.1.1 android!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thanks for the help ya A-holes lol greatly appreciated
UPDATE: first: sorry about the A-holeness, lol i had dealt with verizon on the phone for WAY TOO LONG! and you know how that feels
:beating-head-against-the-wall
and for the life of me could not find a solution to fix the issue
Second, i was able to return to "normal" status, apparently the google wallet hack was the problem, but still had no 4G, they replaced the simcard which fixed it and also somehow changed the status back to "modified" ??? then an hour later the phone went into a boot loop vzw said they would send me a "certified like -new" phone, still not sure if i should just accept the "like-new" or keep my original (now working because i flashed it back to stock with some guide that some A-Hole posted )
flash back to stock and forget this website ever existed. you're only going to hurt yourself further if you keep trying.

He probably read your first post and quit reading since you were an @ss, that's why I and most others here didn't help you. If you would have just asked instead of insulting everyone here you would have got a link to a back to stock thread, and if you had anymore specific questions you would have been helped. Judging by this response you weren't just annoyed at the time, your just an @ss who has no idea what he's doing, and Iphone would be perfect for you, it's idiot proof.

Google wallet hack has nothing to do with triangle notification and 4G signal being dropped. You probably rooted wrong. If I were you, I'll just keep my original note2 and figure out to clear the mess. There is always solution to this and every methods are currently workable.
Ahaha now he's threatening me over pm's. This is wonderful. Listen champ, dickhead posts are going to get dickhead replies. Absolutely nobody, here or anywhere else in the world, is going to pander a friendly response after you insult them while begging favors. Learn this now while you still can, you're going to have a very unhappy life if you can't learn how to cooperate.

Hello!
I have a htc evo 3d. With warranty and I don't want to loose it in any way because I want to root it.
The thing is... Why do you guys make it so complicated? Why are there so many steps they are not explained too well (put the files into c:/android --- which files, and why don't I have a c:android directory) I just cant work like this. Someone would say, google it... I have a life, I don't want to google every single thing I don't understand.
I rooted a nexus with ease, this is just insane.
Sorry, im just not impressed, tried to root it a lot of times, it always ended me loosing my temper. Worst manufacturer for unlocking. Allready unlocked a psp, a samsung, asus, ps3, wii...but this is just stupid..
Anyone wanna help me out? Give me a link to a good tutorial?
Or just let me dump the phone?
Thanks...

This is what q&a forum stands for...
Anyway:
If you only want root, the easiest way would be to follow the htcdev.com instructions to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery afterwards. Then just flash a superuser.zip and you're done
(A+B from first link)
To avoid problems with flashing roms it might be useful to s-off your phone so that you can change your hboot
1 option is the wire trick (a,b,d )

If your phone is still working
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136964
(If you did the s-off steps)
If you used htcdev they will always know that you unlocked your phone, but that seems to be worse than it actually is:
If you are not sending your phone to HTC directly, but to where you buyed it, they will most likely not look for that
If your phone is completely broken they can't proof that it was your fault (or they dont do it because its too much work) and if there are issues that have nothing to do with rooting, etc like a broken screen or similar they still have to repair it with warranty
(That's what I believe, but it might be difficult in some cases and different in some countries)

Well that is a problem... :S
If I send my phone, I send it to my mobile provider, then they send it to a authorised htc servicer...
I really don't care if I loose it, IF the phone would work like it should (this is my 2nd evo, the fist one visited the service 7 times, and the new ones 3D isnt working... :S )
Im gonna call them tomorrow and ask them how is it with the unlock...
Do I have to do the s-off?
I just want a stock android because sense is slow...
Maybe a link to a really simple android 4.0 + ?
AW: Rooting really annoying
No rom discussions on xda/evo forum, sry :/
The most used jb roms should be the ones from johnnyslt(cm10.1), helicopter88 (several aosp roms) and agrabren (4.1 , a bit outdated)
For 3d cam you have to use a sense rom
The gsm forum is full of roms, try them yourself
Without s-off some ROMs/kernel can make problems and you need it to change your hboot
This is needed because with some hboots (1.53 for example) you can't use ROMs that are not based on sense 3/3.6 (+viper afaik)

You are supposed to download the Android SDK files, and then drop them into C:\Android, like it says, easy enough for a 6 year old to do it.
--
Also, it's complicating so idiots don't break their phones or get screwed over by giving complete access to the phone with a simple click of a button in an application.

And htc is probably the only phone that has this procces so long and confusing
Just confess that youre a htc fan boy and cant confess a single fail.
Why does samsung or asus have the unlocking process much easyer then? And why can I still get my warranty on them if I lock them back up? I can just say that htc is the worst phone ever...

Lol, I'm not an HTC fanboy at all, you're just, well, dumb. All you're doing is whining about how HTC phones are "hard" (they're not... lol) and the fact that you clearly void your warranty like it says when you're unlocking the phone. Just because the company is actually smart and does things right, doesn't mean they're bad. It just means you can't cope with how things really are and want everything to be perfect and dandy, but you can't have things your way some times.

Well, I'm not going to bother with you at all . You're pretty arrogant for trying to keep the thought of all phones being the same. HTC is their own brand, they make their phones how they wish. If you're not smart enough to run a few lines in command prompt then don't keep trying because it looks like you're not even willing to try it out. I can tell you right now, that unlocking your phone is so simple it's not even funny, you're just not looking into it and worrying about it being easy.

No offense, but thats a nexus. It doesnot matter who manufactures the Nexus device, they all are so easy to unlock. Even if HTC makes one it would be easier....
and the methods change from one device to another even if they are from same manufacturer (if you are doing it the unofficial way ofc)
hey... plain and simple if you don't want to loose your warranty. LEAVE IT ALONE!. Yes im scared, when I see something and dont understand it...i just cant go like : wgatevery, lets try like this...
Anyway... called tge service, I loose warranty if I unlock it, but if I lock it back when the device needs service then its not a problem
My strategy, I read everything I can 3 times before I try it. I also read every problem and read the solutions so I know how to fix it. Once you do it, you will say, that was easy. Once you actually understand what every step does and means, your brain will capture the info easier and it will make sense. An remember, if you break it, chances are someone else has a fix for what you did because they did the same thing.

I sent the code to htc, and got a unlock code and get this error:
sending 'unlocktoken' (0 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.143s]
writing 'unlocktoken'...
FAILED (remote: unlock token check failed)
What? What?
There are like 5 steps. Don't tell me to try again, done it 5 times already.
Using win8 is this a problem?
You must be to stupid to follow the guides. I would say. Stop asking for help on rooting your evo. And stop talking sh*@ about the procces. Go and buy and buy an iphone they have jaibreak guide for dummies.

Why would you want to get rid of CyanogenMod? It's quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to phones.
Especially if you're running cm10.1, it's 4.2.2

I want to get rid of it cuz I have no idea what is what it can do or why it's even there I'm not a big fan of mods and if I were to mod anything i would do an extreme amount of research of how to install and uninstall with cm I have no idea what's going on

There's a thread for the phone you have in this forum; look in the Straight Talk thread and you'll find the help you need.

It's literally two threads down from this one. I'm sure you can find it.

You want to get rid of it? Easy
Option 1: return it to seller, demand s/he send you another one with pure stock firmware on it, not a custom one or request for the refund.
Option 2: reverse back to stock (from CM) yourself. Since you're here, you should have read anyway, so read up those threads especially the stickies and DIY.

The other posters Actually have given you good advice, and it appears that they have pointed you to the place to answer your question! Really!
It sounds like you have a modified Straight Talk phone (please note that the ATT version is I777 and the ST version is S959G. It would be interesting to know whether you have an I777s or S959G).
IF you have an S959G, then your best bet is to check the thread posted down below as Phalanx and the others have mentioned --it's literally below the post you created (several posts below now, just look for the title "Straight Talk SGS2- SGH-S959G" (<- or click on these "straight talk" words)
It may seem frustrating to get a phone that is customized, and right now you just want a phone; However, you actually have one of the nicest and newest roms available for this type of phone!
IF your phone boots CM10.1 and you have the normal android screens, then you have everything that the ST or AT&T company would provide on a "normal" phone, but without some of the junk and advertising that often infects our phones! Try it out! The interface is not that much different from "stock."
Still, if you don't like your phone that way, YOU can fix it and it is not really hard, but just takes some reading and patience to gain understanding of the techniques and processes (learning the principles also is interesting! :laugh
But it will take you at least a few hours of reading, and a bit patience to scan through the Straight Talk links and pages. If you do that you'll see others who have your issue, and also others who turned the issue around to make it a plus!
A modified phone is more of a commitment than a stock phone -but it returns more to the user! Especially if you want to adjust it, enhance it, or appreciate it, you have to put in time.
If that's not for you -perhaps turn it around on ebay. But a working CM10.1 on a Galaxy S2 is a good machine!
Good Luck
Good Luck
darkecojack send me a PM bro, I'll help you out with what you need to do step by step, even willing to help you over the phone if you want...
Hello there. Basically, I was on the newest (I think) Alliance Rom with Dorimanx kernel for s2. however, it began to get quite buggy, and I tried to flash a new kernel onto it. Siyah. then I tried to flash Cyanogenmod onto it. Restarted, phone won't load past the siyah logo. But I get the siyah recovery menu thing still. But when I try to install the cyanogenmod zip, it fails. I have no other roms on my sd card, or kernels, for that matter.
Please can somebody advise me what to do. I need my phone for work in 5 hours! I was thinking a fix possibly with Odin? Although, I'm guessing if I wiped the phone, kies will no longer be on there. Not sure what it means for it.
thanks.
It's Jellybean by the way
1) Use a more descriptive title than 'HELP !'. Many people will ignore your thread/not read it for that alone (which means you might miss out on help).
2) If you've still got CWRecovery, you still should be able to flash something without resorting to Odin. I would suggest perhaps you're not following the instructions on the first page of the CM thread to the letter. Try it again.
If you really can't flash anything in recovery & still have bootloop (I.E recovery seems broken), get a stock rom from Samfirmware, flash it with Odin = clean slate & you can then re-root your phone & have another go at flashing whatever rom/kernel you want to use.
Thanks, and thanks for telling me about the title, I guess, my apologies, but urgency is urgency.
I can't get any zip files onto my phone or the SD card. so flashing from the phone is pretty much a no.
I can try Odin, however, I barely know what it is. Is anybody willing to just tell me what to click?
No spoon feeding allowed mate. No one will hold your hand and tell you what button to click. I may as well fly over there and do it myself.
If you want to know about Odin flashing click the link in my signature and look at the section on how to flash.
But, I still don't think you need to use Odin. In CWM recovery, Mount usb storage, connect to pc, transfer rom.zip onto phone sd from pc, unmount usb & then flash rom. Done.

Okay.. Seems a bit odd, being a help section, in a forum. I just figured since I'm dealing with something that could potentially break/brick my phone, I would rather do it right as opposed to wrong, considering I have never done it myself before.
Thanks though, I didn't actually know I could mount it without actually booting the phone. I'll try that.

Yet you still haven't changed it. Urgency may well be urgency, but you either want to make that small change & potentially get the help you need if you get stuck further, or you don't. No skin off any of our noses either way *shrugs*.
P.S - Forum rules are forum rules.
Edit - And the reason Hopper said what he said - this may well be a Q&A forum, but that doesn't mean we regurgitate stuff that's been asked/answered thousands of times over the past two years for any n00b who thinks they deserve same.
I'm not even being harsh with what I say. I didn't write out the steps, but I did give you a direct link to a place which lists the steps. That's a legitimate A to your Q.

Just a few more that just say "help". I can see that it is not posing a ****ing problem. Not to mention (may be my fault) but I don't see any way to change the title.
As far as I'm concerned mate, I wanted help with something, went to the HELP section of a FORUM, and got help, so you can go **** yourself if you have a problem with that. I don't go to forums to just chat about my day. If what I did ask was too much for you, then just let someone help who is more helpful than you. I didn't ask anybody to troll the net for files, or anything of the sort, I asked for legitimate help with something I didn't know how to do.
Either way, I've managed to fix the problem, so no more needs to be done.
Thank you to those who gave me advice.

Please show respect to senior members. They have been here longer than you, obviously dealt with problems much similar to your and want you to search for yourself, that is why the search buttons are there. Did you watch 'I am a noob in XDA Developers' video?
And you obviosuly have no idea why they say this, but it's because you will learn for yourself. In near future you will search and find answers yourself if you start now (which they are trying to make you do) other than just relying on other people to do your work for you. That's not the way XDA developers work.
So rather then being disrespectful and throwing insults at them, you should thank them

Yes - I appreciate the fact that I was helped the amount I was, but I could say the same. Is that the best way to treat new members? I have already apologized twice for my mistakes, at least, and I STILL have people telling me I'm doing things wrong. Also, it's not like I haven't thanked them. I think I thanked them at the end of nearly every post. Anything else to pick at?
I'm not trying to disrespect - just trying to prove my point. If you didn't want to help me, don't, just don't ***** about the fact that I wanted help. :/
My problem is fixed, that's all that matters.
thanks again.

Yes it's the right way to treat new members.
You are doing things wrong, respecting other members is a rule of XDA and you're not doing it - so you're doing it wrong.
Good you thanked. But was i necessary to disrespect. Yes you were disrespecting.
Prove your point? That it's okay to spoonfeed newbies and making them think that they wont have to do anything, just ask and wait?! No that's not right, as already stated.
You wanted to help how exactly? To tell us that we should do it 'the way you like it'? No that's wrong, accept it!
Dont come here and try to flame, there's a rule against that. Take you crap elsewhere, cause with that attitude you probably wont get much help around here or anywhere else for that matter.
This is my last post and visit here, so dont even bother commenting if there anything about me.
