New Samsung Vibrant Looking to Be Rooted - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Where do I start? I'm totally newb and firmware and stuff like that. What am I suppose to do? What is rooting? What are the chances of totally screwing up my phone? And what is the lag fix? I basically need help with everything and I also want to know what you can do to a rooted phone and what are benefits? I already know the cons
Thanks, any help is appreciated
Oh, and if I get Froyo or whatever, will I be able to still get TMO updates if the official Froyo ever comes out?

Read the sticky!!!

Oh snap, I'm extremely sorry, I did not see it there. It said "Tips and Tricks" and I automatically thought it wouldn't go in-depth. Thanks for reminding me on how to use the forums properly

Very very very well done job on that sticky btw man!
Also, to answer your first question... download OCLF from the market, it's free and so very simple to use

The chances of something going wrong with JUST rooting your phone are very low. The only thing that can go wrong is if you are hardware locked and still attempt to root, then you can **** up your phone. So make sure you are NOT hardware locked. and you will be fine bro
* When i first started getting into the xda thing, i was right in your place. And the Vibrant Bible in the android dev section really helped me out. Just look at everything in there.
*If you are only rooted, then you will still get OTA's

how do you know if you have a "hardware lock" vibrant?

Well, you can't get into recovery via 3 button combo..
But there is a fix for that! Lol

Did you read the General Sticky? I tried very hard to make that as clear as possible. Just download the file, rename it, put it not in a folder in sdcard/ and then go to stock recovery (with your phone off, press and hold both volume keys, press and hold power, release power at the Vibrant screen while still holding both volume keys) then click on apply update, reboot phone and you are rooted.

@ OP: if your looking for stable as in, set it & forget it, do yourself a favor & wait... Seriously! One way I tell how a ROM is doing is read the first 2 post & last 2 pages. If you see the same issues being stated, dont flash, unless you are willing to deal with that problem.

He was just very patient and answered all my questions, and he's a very trustworthy guy. I bricked my phone about a month ago and have linux and couldn't use odin plus i was still a noob so seeing as my options were buy a new phone or say **** it and send it to him i sent my phone to him and he fixed it, added froyo and shipped it back. Plus he taught me a lot now i kno how to do a LOT now and no longer consider myself a "noob".
Thegreat520 should be a mod on here as he is by far the most helpful person i've ever come across online.

LOL I Thought the EXACT Same thing, because that sounds very fishy. Considering the time it took to ship there and back... like a week to 12 days at the very least? He must of had access to a STABLE version of Froyo before everyone else here on the board.

I have a question to you! Why did you root if you didn't know what you wanted to do afterwards? Rooting is not just so you can feel the "cool factor", and the vast majority of us know before we root why we want to do it, otherwise...................WHY do it???
Why did you bother? Your own answer should close this thread, and everything else you mentioned can be found by reading the forums!
No offense, but you shouldn't be rooting/flashing "roms" if you don't know what your doing.
It's very easy to end up with an unusable device.

Can anyone tell means about that rom pls.
I find your responses a bit harsh guys.. Are there laws / regulations on who can / should root, profile boxes that have to be ticked before one can decide to have a go at unleashing the full power of their phone?
Nobody was born with the knowledge, we all started from scratch at some stage. There are enough warnings that explain how to apply the root methods that are offered in the threads.

Ouch.......poor guy is new and gets slammed instantly for wondering what all he can do with his phone. I think we were all in the same boat not too long ago.
Yea, he may be a noob and not know the politics of posting before reading, but I bet each one of us did at one time too. What we should be doing is just politely pointing him in the right direction on how to learn more about all things root.
Such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972423 being a good place to start.
Understand though, if you screw up your phone, there is no one to blame but yourself. Read how to recover from a soft brick and hard brick before jumping in. Read all posts VERY carefully and all the way through. That's how I learned, and many others before me. And first and foremost, before asking questions about anything, do a quick search of the treads to see if it has already been asked and answered before. If you don't find your question, feel free to ask and ignore those that troll the treads.
Good luck my man.

I am running Gingerblur which is very similar. I think it is a great ROM and one of the few so far for the Atrix. If you like some of the Blur stuff such as the gallery and social networking items, you have to understand that you will be losing them with the new ROM and going with the stock Android gallery. However, if you do a backup of your current ROM before flashing, you can always revert back if you don't like it.
Big thing, screen shots help for me. And the ROM developers do a great job at giving the details of their ROMs in their posts or websites.

I agree, we all have to learn, but the vast majority of us started by reading through threads which have all the info about how to flash sbf's, root, sideload, flash themes, what is and is not possible, etc. We then tried things by following the instructions.
I'm not, and was not, trying to be a ****. I am however very blunt! Everything the OP needs is already there if he/she looks. The forums are full of "repeat" threads because people are basically too lazy to read and research for themselves before asking what has already been asked numerous times.

So it seems we finally got out phones rooted.
Can someone post me a link to a good guide on rooting the phone and also recommend some good things to do once it is rooted such as a good ROM or any other tweaks such as removing bloatware or anything else that improves the phone overall?
Thanks for the help,
Dakota

I know I have a lot of learning to do, and I know it helps to have step by step, instead of just jumping right in. There are a lot of people saying a lot of different ways to do things right now.
I used to come here to load roms onto my old windows phones, Evo 3d is my first android phone, things are a lot different. I feel a little over my head right now. I'll probably wait until I find a video or something to walk me through it, just to be safe.

Hey guys. I finally traded up from an OG droid to a Galaxy S2 and can't seem to find an updated rooting tutorial. All of them have dead links or don't seem to work. I hope I don't get flamed for this but can someone please send me in the right direction? Thank you.

1st step: make sure what model Galaxy S2 you have (label under battery) as there are over a dozen different model phones called Galaxy S2. OG "Droid" is on Verizon, and Verizon doesn't carry ANY Galaxy S2 model. If you were on Verizon previously, that means you are in the US. If so, and you got a Galaxy S2 through a US carrier (ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile), I guarantee it is NOT the GT-I9100, which is the device this forum is for.
my phone is a gt-i9100. I live in alaska. I purchased it through a local phone company called GCI. I just feel overwhelmed with all the galaxy products out there. A little over saturated, but definitely a good phone. I just wanna root it like I did my Xoom and OG droid.

I had to ask. I'm in the US using a GT-I9100 as well, but the majority of US Galaxy S2 users are NOT on the GT-I9100.
You can root using a CF-Root kernel. Works perfectly fine, and installs CWM recovery for you as well. Just make sure to follow the instructions exactly.
Hey thanks. Honestly I like this phone so much I didn't really wanna root it, but my carrier will probably never officially support the ICS update and I miss having nandroid backups and tinkering around to get the most out of my phone. Thanks for the link.
No problem, but also please be aware of the forum rules. Rule #1 is to search before posting. Not everyone will be so generous.
I gotcha. Sorry for not searching as much as I could have. I have an issue, however. My kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI3-CL577579 and the tutorial mentions KG1. Also, there's about a million files posted throughout the thread and I have no idea which is supposed to be for my device. I'm sorry if I'm asking for a handout. I just wish rooting was simpler like on my old phone. I'm sorry, and thanks again/

There's a "Help! Which file do I use ?" section in that thread. Sounds like you read that, since you mention the tutorial that mentions KG1. So you should be able to figure out which one to use based on that. I bolded the important part of your kernel version.
Alright. I found the right file and I'm rooted successfully! is there anything I can do to get rid of the triangle that shows up when I first boot up my phone? I'm totally psyched! Now I gotta search for a good ICS rom. lol.

*sigh*... rule #1 again. This is a question that's been answered literally more times than I have posts. There are many ways.
EDIT: of course, if you flash an ICS ROM, chances are good you will have the triangle again, in which case, there is no point in getting rid of the triangle now.

Ha ha. Funny indeed. I know I had better start following the rules, and the yellow triangle isnt exactly a concern. This thread should probably be deleted due to my ignorance. For what it's worth, I'm extremely grateful for the help I've received. Lastly, anyone here on ICS or have a personal preference on what build to download? I'm kinda worried because I love EOS ICS on my xoom but gingerbread is so well optimized and I'm sure some apps won't work once I make the upgrade. So many more apps are compatible on my phone and I'm weighing out the risks.

Alright everyone. I'll be more respectful of the rules and give thanks when its due but I have a dilemma because Ice sandwich doesn't give access to apn settings like previous incarnations and I feel really lost and worried that I'll mess my mobile internet up if I'm not careful.I also tried to research about making a nandroid backup straight to my external card without results. if this is the wrong place to ask can someone guide me in the right direction? Thanks.
You're saying you can't edit APNs on an ICS ROM? That's weird. The guy in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554967) sure sounds like he could edit APNs on an ICS ROM.
No. Thats not what I meant. Ive only ever edited the apn of my old phone with apn backup and restore. Apps don't have access to apn settings in 3.0 and up from the research I've tried to do. I didn't know how else to edit them. My xoom is wifi and my og Droid never made it past gingerbread so this was never an issue in the past. What do you do when you update? Write everything down and key it in after the upgrade? I have no problem doing so. I was just asking if theres an easier option. My only other issue is figuring out how to make a nandroid backup straight to my external SD card. I'm unfamiliar with recovery kernals for Samsung phones and cwm recovery doesn't let you access your external card so I hoped for advice on a better one. If I can't ask for help with these things here then I promise i won't keep coming back until I have more worthy questions. I could've done a lot more research in the beginning. If its better for everyone ill just see what happens on my own and if I screw up I screw up.

Not what you meant? But your follow up statement here makes it sound like exactly what you meant. Not very clear here...
EDIT to add: I should say - what I linked above is ONLY relevant because I used him as an example of someone who was indicating it was possible to edit an APN on an ICS ROM. Which seems to contradict, and yet NOT contradict, what you were saying. See my confusion?

There are several apps in the play store that back up and restore APN settings. But you probably won't need them. If you do a reset to default in APN settings, it should query your carrier for their APN settings, and just work.

Csc

Hey i cant change my csc settings. I have SEARCHED all over google and have not found a solution. All that shows up is att where it says sales thing.
i am guessing english isnt your first language?
what exactly is it you are looking to DO? with all of your threads you keep opening up, it seems like you have a goal in mind, but dont want to share it....you keep asking very generic questions, and honestly, none of them really make any sense, it just reads as incoherent babbling....
so lets start this off with:
WHAT IS YOUR END GOAL?
WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH?
WHAT IS IT YOU ARE ULTIMATELY LOOKING TO DO?
why do you think you need to modify your CSC for any reason?
I am trying to change my csc settings because i flashed a stock rom which may have a different setting. I am thinking that is why kies wont let me update! Sorry i have so many unanswered questions because all you people reply is with "search". If you are taking the time to scold me about searching and the rules you might as well answer the freakin question.

I am trying to change my csc settings because i flashed a stock rom which may have a different setting. I am thinking that is why kies wont let me update! Sorry i have so many unanswered questions because all you people reply is with "search". but you dont even know if it actually changed anything.
you have provided NO info to the members of the forum for them to help you....
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO YOUR PHONE SO FAR?
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE MODIFIED THE CSC?
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE CSC?
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING TO GET AN UPDATE FROM KIES?
i dont think you need to change your CSC settings at all....just flash back to stock....its not difficult
and if you dont like hearing the word SEARCH, maybe you shouldnt be here on this site, because its the first F'ng rule of the forum.....
I did flash a stock rom. I explained the reason i want to CHECK my settings is because kies says my device does not support updating from it. The only time it gave me that message is when i rooted it. I noticed it and so i flashed a stock rom and was still given the message. Samsung then gave me a 2.3.6 ota update and STILL i have the message. I'm not a 100% sure that its vecause of the csc, i just want to check. And when i tried checking, it diddnt let me. All it said by sales code was "att" with nothing under it instead of "csc". I wasn't sure if that was a problem so i posred this topic. Need anh more info? And is why i want to do something necessary? As long as you know what i'm trying to do, (and not why) that should be enough.
EDIT: i used zedomax to root and unroot.
you posted this topic of how to CHANGE it. you didnt explain why you thought you needed to change it.
by me piecing together your different threads, it was obviously clear to me that you didnt understand this phone and/or android....so its pretty reasonable to assume that you didnt fully understand CSC....
i wish you luck in your many threads....and hope you dont post on here soon about bricking your phone because you didnt read enough....it is painstakingly obvious that you just want to be spoonfed what you want to know and not help anyone help you, so to that, i bid farewell.
All i want to f****** know is how to get my phone to support updating via kies. I dont want an arguement and im fairly confused because im trying to understand but all i get from you are scoldings and criticism. I would like help but all this arguing is making it that more difficult
I'm a noob, so please understand... xD

Basically what you're saying is all these threads you've created are related. Meaning you broke ANOTHER rule of xda about spamming the board. This all should have gone in one thread because this isn't your own personal forum.

Are you going to help or not? If not i would appreciate it if we just stopped talking because you obviously have nothing better to do than argue over the internet. And i apologize for "spamming" this forum with 3 posts. I am sorry for the thousands of other topics for taking over with 3 posts. But enough with the rules and arguing please. I just need help. Isn't that a main reason this website is around?

Actually, no. This is NOT the main reason this site is around. It was created to aid developers. It has degraded over the past year or so due to people thinking they deserve help just because. Sorry you don't understand, but I will also tell you to search. Understand what you want before you start messing with something you have no understanding of. I know right now this is a useless post to you. But you are probably not going to find anyone here to spoon feed you the answer. If you knew what you were getting into when you started you would know why keis is not going to work for you now.

I apologize for everything. Honestly i know you know the answer and i would at least like a link to the post so i can shut up and get out of your hair. But if not oh well.

100% disagree. If it was really like that then there wouldn't be any bugs in software period . New bugs arise after testing new software.
I'm going to kill all your threads by this one post.
THERE IS NO OFFICIAL ICS UPDATE FOR OUR PHONE, AND THERE LIKELY WON'T BE FOR THE NEXT COUPLE MONTHS. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.
Even if there was a Kies update, you'd have to use Kies Mini, the full Kies does not and never will update our phone no matter what you do. And if you somehow happen to find an update pushed to your phone over the air or through Kies Mini, it's 2.3.6 GB. That is the only update available to stock 2.3.4 phones.
You want official ICS now? Go buy a Galaxy Nexus or an International Galaxy SII.
Mods, you may remove or edit this post as you feel is necessary. I request though, that you close these threads before more crap happens.
