will rom manager work with samsung fascinate? if so how should i root it to get it to work? or just go right to dl a jb rom of choice? I use rom manager on my rooted htc incredible and it was so easy, is the fassy easy to root and what should I do in order to do it? I need this to work cuz my wife has it and it keeps freezing up and have to pull battery. it erases all msgs and call logs about evry 12 days also. is it worth rooting or should i just get a new phone for her?
I believe there is a guide floating around here that will answer your questions wink wink...
First you have too flash cyqnogenmod or some mtd then download ROM manager select your device which would be fascinatemtd and click manual recovery and recovery 3+

ok i did the cm10, it has rom manager in it, now all i have to is go to rom manager and download rom thru it right? instead of the odin thing all that pc hook up stuff?
I'm really not familiar with that way... You can ,,, but you don't need to do it that way,,,
Now that you are rooted and on a cm10 \ jellybean ROM
Just download the xx-custom ROM-xx.zip,,,
,,, and put it in the main section of your sd card
- Reboot into recovery
(volume up/down keys to navigate,,, Tap/press the power key to select/enter)
if you are coming from any other rom, for the most part your data will get wiped
But you still should always:: wipe/clear your:: data ,, dalvik ,, cache partition
dalvik is in the 'advanced' section
Then
- choose, - reboot recovery, - option from inside the cwm,,, this restarts your recovery session fresh
- choose install zip from sd card
- Select choose zip to install
- flash xx-custom ROM-xx.zip
- choose, - reboot recovery, - option from inside the cwm
- flash xx-custom ROM-xx.zip again
- flash gapps
- reboot
- make adjustments, have fun
It's pretty fast and efficient to update your system,,, ,,, it is the restoring of apps and settings that takes a long time
I believe I got everything,,, but - "droidstyle guide" - has everything throughly covered
::: read it ,, print it,,, pull it up on your pc,,,

Stay away from rom manager...flash manually in cwm. Like I said, there is a guide with proper instructions if you need them.

Hi guys, I was trying to flash new ROM via CWM. However, cwm wasn't able to read the zip file saying something about script is not supported blah blah blah... Browsing thru xda forum, I found out that this problem has caused due to the cwm version(recently updated to cwm3.0.0.8) , or at least I want to believe it this way. So lastnight I ended up finding a thread started by jt1134 which I basically helped out lots of ppl who were struggling with similar problem as mine. But the thing is when I was trying to download the files, cwm-recovery-ALL.zip and cwm-recovery-ALL odin. The download links were broken giving me an error message. So guys, if anyone has the files I beg of you to share it pleaseeeeeeeee.
to shorten it down, the link is broken, I think. So if anyone has the files I beg of you to share it thank you..............
Hello jjalhjy
I will make this easy for the both of us!
Direct your browser to this link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=999802
Once there scroll down to the 5th post (#5) where I linked both the page you referenced (broken links) and a link to a working download of the ".tar" file (was earlier! ).
If you need the .zip file scroll down to post 9 (#9) where I have linked it.
A quick guide to getting you flashed.
*note* I am assuming you cannot use .zip files due to the incompatible script error! This is for using odin.
1. Put phone in download mode via the power menu if on superclean. If not turn off the power, pull battery, plug into computer, hold "down" on the volume rocker till the yellow triangle "download" screen appears
2. download the ".tar" version of cwr all
3. Launch odin
4. Click the PDA button and search for the ".tar" file and select it -> then hit "ok"
5. Run the file in odin, wait for the phone to reboot.
6. put your battery back in and test recovery mode to see how it looks!
*whew*
good luck!
Wow that was a fast reply! Thank you! A quick question tho, 1. Do you know if I have to uninstall ROMmanager and delete update.zip file in my sd card before I even start flashing via using odin. 2. After following your instruction step by step, and let's say if it works. Do I still need to download ROMmanager? 3. I remember reading someone's thread in xda saying it is always necessary to flash new cwm after flashing a ROM (I always have it done using ROMmanager but now things have changed, obvisouly. So yea, how would I flash new CWM after flashing a ROM from now?
Sorry if these questions sound so newbyyyy hehe and thanks again!

It is advised (so I have read) that you should not use ROM manager with the Fascinate. While it is a powerful tool, it is just not 100% Fascinate friendly yet. Also I have never had to remove/mess with the update.zip on my SD card. Heck as far as I know you can delete it after using ODIN with the new cwr-all.

No. I would use the Development Thread here in the fascinate section for your ROMS. ROM manager is just not made for us.....yet!

I personally have never done this. To the best of my knowledge (and real life experience) cwr-all (red version) is the current and most up-to-date version (for the Fascinate). Once I ODIN-ed over the cwr-all I have not updated it once. You should be fine to flash it and flash ROMs as you please!
Dude, thanks A LOTTTTTT
i have a fascinate that ive had for a while. ive managed to root it(took 4ever to find out how) but im rooted with everything else stock. no custom rom kernel or anything(i know im rooted cuz i can use wireless tether with superuser) HOWEVER, ive been reading on this cyanogen mod 7 and would really like to put this on my phone and get rid of touchwiz once and for all, and don't suggest adw it lags my phone down. can somebody plz give me a tutorial on how to download and flash whatever that is. i can't handle the sluggishness of tw anymore. btw i have odin but really don't know what to do with it. oh and sorry if this is already posted but ive searched and don't really feel like going through every thread in existence. please help me!!
Well before I would go and post a tutorial about this we need to address one thing.

You understand that the default launcher in Cyanogenmod7 (CM7) is ADW correct? I just would hate for you to go through the touch n go process of flashing CM7 and end up hating it because of this
Well... you can switch away from ADW. For instance, I switched to the GO launcher, and it ran like a dream.
Alright, here's a n00b guide.
0)Download these files to you SD card: http://www.mediafire.com/?dfjjclddzq6fl5q, http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip
1) Flash this in Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=657960&d=1310959789
2) Boot into recovery by turning off the phone/pulling battery and holding volume up, volume down and power at the same time
3) Select wipe cache, then select wipe data
4) Select install zip from sd card or something like that and flash CM7 (The file you downloaded from mediafire above)
5)Once phone finishes installing, hit reboot phone or if your phone is off turn it back on
6) Hold down power button, select reboot, select recovery
7) From here, select install zip from sd card again, and install the gapps from the second link.
8) Reboot, and enjoy. If you don't like adw, install GO launcher from the market

Install this on your computer: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?7946i8tdbe0yv50
Open Odin, remove your phone's battery, hold the "volume down" button on your phone while plugging it into your computer and a little android with a shovel should come up.
On your computer, download the file from step 1. In odin, click the PDA button (NOT THE PHONE BUTTON) and select that downloaded file. Hit start or flash or whatever the button like that says. It will take a while. Once done, you will have cwm, so do step 2.
Once in CWN, use the volume buttons to go up and down and use the power button as the "enter button". Follow the rest of the steps from there.
Also, GAPPS is just the technical name for that second file you downloaded. Install it through CWM exactly as the steps say.

Gapps...is abbreviated for google apps. Ie. Google talk, gmail, google voice, google chrome to phone, ect...this is a zip file package that contains a lot of googles apps that are not pre packaged into the rom
Odin is a software program for pc to push a modified recovery program or complete stock rom files, or patches and some other goodies and this recovery abbreviated cwm(clock work mod ) is the program you use to install custom roms and kernels. All odin file formats will end in .tar while files for flashing via recovery end in .zip

While skafan is right, you probably won't completely bork your device but you can get in deep real quick if you screw up anything major...like flashing a rom not for the fascinate. Go to the link he posted and do it exactly to return to complete stock and then read read read before flashing again, but it is very hard to completely destroy our phones besides physically smashing it. His warning is of just cause....that said..everything I learned(and I'm sure some will agree with me) for the most part is out of necessity..meaning I started tinkering with my phone and learned what I had to as I made mistakes and needed to know how to get out of a boot loop or force closes. There were even a few times where I thought I just turned my fassy into an expensive paper weight! You'll get there and, if nothing else borking builds character!

Hi, thanks for even clicking on this, I am a noob!
I am trying to install the Liberty3 rom for my DROID X2. I have wiped my data, I'm rooted with Superuser and the zip is in my /sdcard/clockworkmod/ folder. The exact address is /sdcard/clockworkmod/Liberty3X2-1.0Gold.zip
The answer might be very clear to you but as for me i am very new so please but it in the simplest terms possible and if you can list step by step instructions. I am not picky at all about the rom, I just want one that can help me save battery life and/or is better in any way than the stock one.
Thanks so much!
Also i am on 2.3.4
Do you have system recovery installed? If not you can find it in the development section.

I am confused as to why ur zip is in a clockworkmod folder?
did u put it there?
if u r using rom manager just stop there and start over.
download the rom zip from the.liberty thread located in development section.
then download and install x2 bootstrap recovery. find the link in the sticky posted by booked in development section. the link to liberty rom can also be found there.
also b4 flashing make sure ur android version is 2.3.4(settings>about phone>android version)
make a nandroid backup first.
check the general section for instructions on how to install BSR(bootstrap recovery, aka system recovery ) and how to use it. the tutorial was posted by MoonShadow and is a sticky in general section.
good luck

+1 rom manager + X2=lots of forum posts
If you dont have it, you NEED Bootstrap Recovery. Clockwork Mod Doesnt work on our phones. As was mentioned, look in the development forum. It should be the first thread listed. You'll find a link in there.
Well, your rooted, so that a good start. Saves time in writing this out. But Clockwork recovery doesn't work on DX2 because of the locked Bootloader. You NEED to install the Bootstrap for it. Which can be downloaded directly from here. http://tinyurl.com/8ykmm6p (I shorten the link because it was SO long, but this is from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166508)
Here is what you should do in order to flash Liberty on. (Because your rooted and on 2.3.4, I'm skipping some steps)
Please place the .zip to flash Liberty in the root one of your SD cards
Also, go into Settings>Applications and turn on Unknown Sources and Settings>Applications>Development to turn on USB Debugging
1. Download 'Bootstrap_signed.apk' and place it on your SD card. (Download: http://tinyurl.com/8ykmm6p)
2. Install the Bootstrap on the stock OS (any file manager can do this). After that, open it and give it root access.
3. Press Install Recovery!
4. AFTER you've pressed that and it's said sucessful, Plug your phone into a WALL charger! (this MUST be a wall charger!)
5. After you've done that, press 'Recovery Mode'. it will then reboot into the custom recovery.
6. Once in there, Wipe your Data, Cache and Dalvik cache (on advanced).
7. Now go to 'Install update from .zip'. Then choose the SD you placed your Liberty .zip ROM.
8. Select that to install, and let it flash. This won't take too long.
9. Reboot the phone, and WAIT FOR IT TO START UP. I can stand people saying "I've waited for over 2 minutes" - It's suppose to take a long time. You just wipe all the caches and installed a custom ROM... It takes a minute. (Mine usually takes about 5 minutes to totally startup).
That's it! Congratulations, you just installed your first Custom ROM! Give yourself a pat on the back while you bask in the glory of your new speed!

I believe in liberty settings you can add backup assistant back in.
Do that and sync...
Unless you didn't sync before flashing
Then restore nandroid and sync your contracts to Google or backup assistant
Then flash. Then just sync your contacts back to phone using whatever you used to back then up..
Clockwork Based Recovery
I RECOMMEND USING THE TOUCH RECOVERY! (click here)
Disclaimer
I'm not responsible for any damages to your phone. Neither am I responsible, if the phone becomes alive, runs away, dominates or kills you ;P
Also, if you don't know how to flash this, then you probably shouldn't... just saying...
All this work is done "blind", since I don't have a note, so be thankful to the testers, who were willing to sacrifice their devices

How to install
Odin (this will increase the flash counter)
- put your phone into download mode
- in odin choose pda, and select the .tar.md5 file and flash
Note: there are several guides how to use odin on xda
Alternative (this will NOT increase the flash counter but is harder to do)
- get adb (from the android sdk for example)
- root your phone
-> there are several ways how to archive that, the easiest is probably flashing a rooted system.img using Odin (flashing system does not increase the counter)
- start your phone normally and activate USB debugging (Settings, Applications, Development or so, enable USB debugging)
- extract the recovery.img from either the Odin.tar.md5 or from the CWM.zip and put it onto your sdcard
- connect the phone to your computer, dont mount/share the sdcard
- run the following commands:
Code:
> adb shell
~ su
# dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22
<some output>
# exit
~ exit
- the path (/sdcard/recovery.img) might need to be adjusted
- NOTE: this can brick your phone, if you have typos, make sure you know what you are doing
Updating CWM
- download the update.zip from the CWM link and put it on your sdcard
- reboot to recovery and install it, on the next reboot you should have the new version running
- alternatively all the above can also be used to update
Back to stock
- get the correct stock recovery.img (the at&t one should also work for telus, Bell and rogers, otherwise look for the correct one)
- use the Odin or Alternative to flash the stock recovery img back

I agree the fonts are really small and hard to see and while we're on that subject - are there any plans to port the touch interface?

The best way to flash this is to make a nandroid backup first. Then flash CWM Beta 3. Then restore from the backup.
At least, that's what worked for me. No FCs here.
Want to flash a new rom and try out themes but I want to get confirmation on the steps I'll be taking rather than just rely on my search results.
1. I found this for installing cwm:
http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...-on-att-galaxy-note-sgh-i717-belltelusrogers/
Since our note isn't built into ROM Manager, I'm failing to see if theres a connection between that program and what is being done in the above tutorial. Kinda confused here and unsure of the next step. Am i just trying to install cwm or am I running a backup of some kind after doing so?
2. I've installed and ran titanium backup (i'm rooted)
3. http://www.chargeforums.com/forum/d...-flashing-roms-return-stock-odin-picture.html
Is all of this correct for our note as well (obviously replacing the pda with the saurom or collective rom)
Anything else I should do?
I know this is newbish but it seems there's a million ways to do this kind of stuff so I want to be sure I'm doing everything the common way that's done around here so it's easier to troubleshoot etc. if I have any issues.
so since your note is rooted and you don't have the clockwork recovery on your note? if not.
the first link that you post is correct for installing cmw.
or
try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431
then flashing Rom.
Dont use the last link you post. it is for Droid.
so the method for flashing a new rom is the same as installing cwm with oden? just simply put my phone in DL mode and open it in pda with oden?
i flashed the cwm using that thread and the oden method. maybe i'm still not understanding what cwm is. am I supposed to do something with it before flashing the rom, or is it something that is just necessary to be flashed onto the phone before flashing the rom? is the titanium backup all I needed to do?
edit: and also will i need to re-setup everything or will restoring all apps+system data with titanium backup after flashing new rom essentially put me back exactly where i was setup wise?

I'm a noob as well and I'm only 1 step ahead of you so far. I'm rooted and just installed cwm. I'm ready to install saurom and based on the research I've done you go into cwm (by pressing both up/down vol and power at same time).
That's where you will install saurom and without rebooting install the att fix. Assuming you downloaded the files and transferred them over to sd card. That's all the info I've gathered so far.
As soon as I installed cwm I immediately made a backup of my stock rom. I highly suggest you backup your stock as well. This is a great easy tutorial on how to do it. If anything goes wrong with installing custom roms you can simply go back to stock.

Not to hijack your thread but I was about to post about this same topic and wanted confirmation on the steps.
1. root the note -check
2. install cwm - check
3. make backup of stock rom - check (or is using titanium backup the same thing?)
4. download "saurom_ATT_APN_US_Fix_.zip" and "SAUROM_XLA2_RCVI.zip" and transfer to sd card.
5. enter cwm mode by hitting up/down vol and power buttons at same time.
6. navigate to the files and install saurom and without rebooting install att fix.
7. reboot and that's it??
Do I need to do anything else?

I would say stop using google and search here on XDA in the DEV section for the i717 (the Note) before you wind up flashing a ROM not meant for this phone.
The key here is read, read, read and then read more. Evey thing you need to root, flash CWM (specific version for the i717) and install any custom ROM is here on XDA.
Be VERY careful and understand that if you flash with ODIN (depending on what you flash - system, kernel etc) you may increase your flash counter. Most of the rooting methods and utilities indicate if the counter will increase or not.
TiBa - backups up your apps and setting on booted up
CWM - tool to wipe various areas of the device, flash ROMs and install packages
Nandroid Backup - backups up your ROM and is done once inside CWM.

Be sure you understand how to return to stock just in case that becomes necessary down the line.

How to Flash a ROM????
Basic Steps
! Choose the ROM that you want and download its .zip file
!! Transfer the zip file to your phone’s sd card. Do not put it into any folder.
!!! Turn off your phone and reboot into recovery, usually by holding the down button and power button at the same time.
!!!! Do a Nandroid backup
!!!!! Wipe the phone 3 times by clearing cache/factory restore 3 times and wiping dalvik cache and system format
!!!!!! Flash the zip file that you put on your sd card
!!!!!!! Reboot phone

I'm not sure how to do a nandroid backup... not sure what it is. Didn't find any specific topics on it searching here and nothing in the play store. how is this backup different from the backup using cwm recovery mode> backup ?
Are the above steps otherwise good? It seems different ROM's have different instructions for installing them, from what I've gathered. I guess I'm going to try saurom first, btw since I really like the transfuzion theme.

a nandroid back is done from inside CWM. Go to the backup and restore and backup. This will backup your current rom to the SD Card (internal or external depending on which option you pick) in the clockwork mod folder. This will save your current rom exactly how it is. You want to do this before flashing anything generally.
To flash a new Rom, you will want to make sure you have done a nandroid back up, make sure all the necessary files are on your sd card. Boot into CWM (hold vol up and down and power, when it turns off it will vibrate, let go of power and hold vol up and down until you are in CWM). Then you want to wipe all data (factory reset), wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache (in advanced menu). Then install zip from sd card, find your rom zip file and flash that. This is what i usually do. I am not 100% sure the complete wipe is necessary for the Note, it was on my old Inspire, so I still do as it is habit and good practice.
I had already posted a response but apparently it disappeared. So I guess I did an n Android backup already with Cwm I just didn't realize that's what it was called.
I guess with those instructions it seems very straight forward. My only question now I think is with regards to the kernel. On the first page in the saurom thread there is talk about using a specific kernel, do I still need to worry about this?

A backup in CWM will save your entire devices settings exactly as you have them, including apps and settings.
Use titanium backup only for app backups. You press menu -> batch -> backup all user apps.
Usually it is stated to not restore apps WITH user settings but I haven't had any problems with saurom after doing such.
Also, I believe saurom uses either da_g's overclocked kernel or holokernal. You don't have to worry about that part as it is baked into the ROM.

yes that is correct....yipppy
Yes it was incredibly easy. Much easier than trying to get a student Dev account for windows phone to unlock it... boy was that a pain! The only annoying part here was having to one by one install my old apps with TB. If dev picks up for this phone I might have to cave for the pro version.
Thanks guys.

Pro version is definitely worth it. With the devs I see coming to the Note, we will have a bustling dev community in no time.
