I just rooted my phone and I'm anxious to put a good solid ROM on here.
Since upgrading to stock ICS from gingerbread (pre root), I've had nothing but problems, so I'm hoping a custom ROM cam solve this. My gps and notification sounds don't work, and the battery life has gone down the tubes.
I basically looking for a great stock gingerbread rom, or a stable ICS ROM that can provide me with the original stability and functionality this phone once provided. Suggestions? I am currently using the 3.0.35-siyah v3.4.2 nomswap+ktoonsez kernel.
Thanks everyone!

Believe me, I'd love to go from ROM to ROM, but I'm a bit busy (grad student) and I cant say I enjoy hacking my phone...the whole process freaks me out. Just doing this out of necessity so I don't need to go back to that stupid iphone. Looking for suggestions from people's experience. I love my gs2 and this is a last resort to get it working like it did before that HORRIBLE ICS roll out.
I hear AOKP 7.1 is really good with battery and GPS, but I alo hear the kernel is what determines battery. Truth on both fronts?

Rom xyz is best for battery but qrs is faster. Ghi is more customizable, but you will find mnop to be the best all around package.

If you're looking to replace stock gingerbread, then as 122ninjas said I would recommend going with ShoStock2. It's my daily driver. If you go with AOKP or another AOSP type ROM, You'll have to find substitutes for all the touchwiz -based applications that you're used to.

I could say the same thing for PhoneBricker even though it is no longer supported. Point is, as you know ninja, ROMS and kernels play differently on each phone. Also, each gives a unique user experience.
OP, flashing correctly takes about 10-15 minutes not including download time. So, not having time doesn't work as a reason. Not being rude. It's easy to do while you're:
Taking shower
Using the restroom
Washing the dishes
While you're surfing FB on your laptop/PC

Nice, Ill give shostock a go today. Gotta admit, the AOKP Jb stuff looks awesome with all the customizable options, but I feel with more bells and whistles comes more issues. I assume JB ROMS aren't going to be as stable.

No offense taken! I think my trepidation comes more from my experience with this phone....I did that official ICS update and it ruined my phone. Got a new one, and a ton of bugs made me frustrated. I finally did the root (which was stupid easy....like...really easy.) so I have a bit of confidence now.

Once you start flashing stuff with CWM the deepest trouble I have been in is needing a factory reset. But if you are really scared then go ahead and download all the return to stock + root files and mobile odin and stuff. I just did that in case of emergencies.

Takes that long for the ROM to flash. Then add kernel cleaner and Gapps. Then reboot + re-optimization... Taking closer to 10 minutes. Add a few more minutes and you've got a great estimate of 10-15. EVERYONE has 10-15 minutes in their day to flash a ROM considering it's hands off once you press "go". See my examples.
The post above this has a great tip for anyone who wants to be prepared for the worst.

If you're on stock ics (the official release) and someone told u there are speed improvements they lied. Any custom rom easily blows stock out of the water. Stock ( even when rooted) is basically for people who want to play it safe and for things to just work. If u want customization and speed ur best bet is an AOSP based rom. Good luck. Happy flashing.

I'm going back and forth between these two as there are things I like about both.
One thing I have read is that ICS is more ram intensive, and thus certain apps might run a bit faster under Gingerbread.
Performance is the main thing I care about so I'd like to know if this is true and I would like to know your general opinions on ICS compared to Gingerbread
as well ....

Man ... things are really touchy around here. Maybe I just have brain damage (quite possible) but I don't remember having to walk on eggshells quite so much back in the Tmobile Galaxy S XDA forum ...
Okay I changed it to "compared to" instead of "vs" in the body of my post ... is that less "inflammatory?"
Why would people get upset about picking one OS over the other? It's not like you designed the damn things. What's wrong with asking which one you think is faster for memory intensive apps? I'm not trolling. I just don't get it.

I agree completely that ics in general looks much better than gb. I like the feel of it better too, for lack of a better word. But since I use Launcher Pro it doesn't make that much difference what the UI looks like for me. I have noticed that some games are sluggish with ics or do not run at all, but that could be more of an issue on the game developers end, I guess ... Do you have any issues connecting your phone to a computer with ics? The process seems much more cumbersome than with gb--with gb I just plug in a USB cable and tap mass storage and that is it.
Went to stock gingerbread from jb. Gingerbread is very smooth. Only thing i miss from ics/ jb is task manager and full screen browser (stock browser)
This thread is pointless, no offense meant, because of the following:

Only thing I've suffered from is a bit of mem leak... a reboot a day solves that, sometimes two. This guy is being killed by mem leak. Why is it different? Each phone is different just like each grape on a vine is different.
Different views, different experience, same phone, same ROM.
The same things can be said for ICS vs GB. Different issues, different opinions, same phone, same ROM. Let's not forget that I may FULL wipe and run the kernel cleaning script before each flash and someone else may just wipe cache and dalvik. That right there is enough for one of us to have a problem the other doesn't. Let's not forget about the different tweaks you can do which add even MORE variables to why one ROM or kernel may run better for you than me... even on the same settings.
This was my "nice" response.

GB. I believe it offers the best experience for our device. I've been on ICS for a while and the only thing holding me is the beautiful UI changes in AOSP. So far, it's been enough to keep me put. I doubt most people care about it that much though.

I believe all roms that you flash from here will also install an appropriate kernel for you. So, you don't need to go looking for a kernel. I'm running SHOstock2, which uses the siyah kernel, and my battery lasts me through the entire day with medium usage. Try starting with that. Also, always make sure you have a backup of whatever you were on before flashing another rom to avoid serious issues.

Thanks for the help. The Shostock 2 Rom was on the list of ones I have been interested in. I have made a backup and will transfer it to my computer before proceeding.

No problem. Make sure you hit the thanks button if you find anyone's posts useful =).
The only thing you have to worry about kernel wise is making sure when you rooted that you flash an OS appropriate kernel. After that, every ROM made for this phone has a kernel available. If you want to flash a new kernel, you can do so at any time. Then you have to, again, pay attention to make sure it's OS appropriate. Ie. GB, ICS or JB.
Also, make sure you do the following:
Read the OP multiple times before flashing ROM.
1. Nandroid backup
1a. Factory Reset/Wipe (if called for in the OP or you have issues after flash)
2. Flash Jivy26 Kernel Cleaning Script (easily found by search - if dl in op doesn't work, read further in there thread, there is a working link)
3. Flash ROM.
4. Flash Gapps (if called for by OP. Also, make sure it's for your OS and inverted [or not] if need.)
Any issues? Try again including 1a.

The only way to know for sure is to flash some and try them out yourself. I could tell you XYZ rom is the best out but it runs like crap when you load it up. Each rom will run differently on each device.

Hey guys with the new 4.2.2 update, roms have been coming out pretty fast over the past few weeks and i haven't had time to try them all.
1. Flapps builds
2. CM nightlys
3. Jamies U-CM
4. JellyBeer
5. AVATAR rom
6. The Collective
7. Sons of Android (Ptmr3)
Kernels: Flappjaxx 3.1.x, and ACES B3x.
As you can see, a hella of amount of roms and i cant test them all :? So im asking for some overall feedback on these roms. Any info on any of these roms will do just fine. I also appreciate any comments/replies. Maybe comment on the stability or overall theming of the rom
thanks- OPGT
Just try them. Do you really care what I think? I like green but my wife likes blue. So just try them.
I probably should have just let this go but damn. Should I try on your shoes too and tell you how they feel?

While you have best intentions at heart I see this turning into a troll fest.
As for my feedback I had flashed everyone of flapps kangs since he started putting them out. I was enjoying them but at the same time little bugs with 4.2 made me decide to flash back to his uclf6 b12 which is an amazingly stable and solid TW ICS rom.

Hello. This is not a pair of shoes.. It's a piece of hardware and silly roms. I, as many other users do not have time to test Every rom. Last time I checked each rom must receive full wipe and that takes a great amount of time and effort to do. And if you read the OP, it clearly states I DO want you opinion or what you think.. I wouldn't have made the thread if I didn't care what you thought. It also notes at very top that it's not a what's the best rom thread. So please read carefully next time. I don't like arguing over something silly. Thanks.

I am running the CM10.1 Nightlys, and they are great. They are plagued with an audio bug at the moment, so you have to use a custom kernel in place of the CM stock one. Only downside to that is battery life is bad with the custom kernel I am using, but stock CM kernel gave me great battery life, patiently waiting it out. JellyBeer was the first ROM I tried on the note and it was great as well. But I always go back to straight CM with every phone I have always used. I like watching the change log and getting the new features first. Hope this helped.

I will second jellybam...I am running version 6.6 with aces31 kernel...I have been dieing to try ptmr3's latest or even the newer version of jellybam but I generally have an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kinda disposition..
I really wish there was a jellybam thread over here as I would love to read other's experience with the latest version. That's generally how I make my decisions on whether it not an upgrade is worth it...
Anyhow, my current setup has great features, is very stable (no reboots 3 days in), and has pretty decent battery life..

JellyBam 6.7 is most stable release so far i just dirty flashed it and no flickering or crashes. As for a jellybam thread, we wont be seeing one soon or at all in that matter... as XDA is convinced the rom is not his.
No flickers no reboots nothing after a month on jellybeer

Thanks, downloading 6.7 now..I noticed that aces has a ver32 kernel up. Normally, I would give the stock kernel a try but the aces kernels have been really stable for me...and fast charge is a useful feature...

My fav is Flapps 4.2.2. I've been on it for about a week or two and it is awesome. Most stable of all the 4.2.2 ROMs I've tried. You don't see much about it because FJ isn't posting on XDA. He is just sharing his work, but it's great stuff.
I tried a few others but just wasn't as satisfied. Jellybam is a good one but there were other issues that keep from dealing with those characters. CM is also good, of course. I encourage you to include Flapps in your final 2 or 3 trial run ROMs. You won't be disappointed.
I was disappointed to read about Scott's decision to stop developing his CleanRom. I found it to be a great balance between TW and Google Edition.
I hope someone will take it over. I don't see a clear alternative to CR.
Thoughts?

Giving Synergy a try. But still keeping CR backup
If you're looking for a fantastic running ROM with the same odex'd stock feel go with synergy and odex it yourself.
The "life after" stuff is a bit melodramatic

The newest release of Hyper is incredibly stable, easy to use, and insanely fast. I strongly suggest giving it a spin.
disappointing clean rom is stable I will definitely miss it.. Thanks for a nandroid backup that I will keep forever

Another CleanRom fan here.....still running 1.2 cause it worked so well for me.
I wish Scott well in whatever he is doing next! I certainly appreciate all the hard work he put in.
Thank you, Scott!!!!!!!!!!!
I went to eclipse and used tb and deleted health and Samsung link. The two things left of bloat. Then flashed latest faux. I dig it so far. Farewell clean.

Life after cleanrom is fine but better with it. Scott stopping has me wondering the birth to death rate of android developers. More devices and old ones that stay relevant already spread them out pretty good.

Yep totally bummed he's stopping, just loved how great everything worked on his ROM. I will give Hyper a try again. I used it before but had a few issues, looks like he's got it running pretty good now. Can always nandroid...

So, is hyper where everyone is heading?
Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk 2
yeah I'm still on 1.0 cause its the best battery life. I've tried 1.3 and 1.5R2 though not 1.6 or 1.6.5.
1.0 is still my DD. Smooth no lag (though i had no lag on stock) and everything worked with crazy battery life. I have all of the Zips DL so I'll always have the nandroids plus the zips. The battery life i got on 1.0 (.25% drain per hour idle and 6-7 hours on screen time) makes me not need to mess with other roms right now. Unfortunatley i was not getting the same battery life with the other versions of this rom.
Also unfortunate he closed the thread right away as we're unable to thank him for a great ROM. I wish him the best and hope whatever changed in his life is good or if not so good things improve for him. Thanks Scott

Not me, I like CleanRom, I've tried Hyperdrive and really like all it's features but I'm running CynogenMod. Why? Because it works on my phone and NO TouchWiz ROM I've tried does work properly with all my apps and I can't figure it out? Apps that ran just fine on my Galaxy S3 work perfectly on AOSP ROMs on the S4 but will not work on any TouchWiz ROM and I haven't the knowledge, time or inclination to trouble shoot TouchWiz so.... CyanogenMod.
I almost cried when I read that message. After having terrible lag issues with hyperdrive, it looks like synergy will be my next go to rom when the update comes out which I will like because it will have more features than CR did. I don't like anything crazy but some tweaks that scott doesn't offer in his stockish rom will be nice. I am going to miss him very much though. Great guy and great dev.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Lmao, I loled when I read this... Good stuff.
I am far from a dev, hell I've barely been using an android device for a month but, devs have such a thankless job/hobby. I am not aware of one that gets money for anything they do (short of "bounties") yet, get ridiculed when something they do may not work for someone.
I appreciate everything, would love to get into doing things like this just have no idea where to start. I wouldn't mind taking a crack at making my own ROM for personal use and if good enough, maybe public. I just have zero experience, lol
