Noob here. I have searched and read for hours and have come up with nothing. I am currently running 2.3.4 that i rooted using Zedomax.zip. I have tried 2.3.6 and 4.0.1 At&t releases but battery life was terrible in both cases. So I have returned to 2.3.4 I would like to run a custom ROM. This is the reason I left Iphone was to have some fun with my phone. Do you need to match a custom rom up with a specific kernal? Or can I install any ROM that is for the SGH-I777? Thanks in advance. Any help on a kernal and ROM combo that has good battery life would be great.

I believe all roms that you flash from here will also install an appropriate kernel for you. So, you don't need to go looking for a kernel. I'm running SHOstock2, which uses the siyah kernel, and my battery lasts me through the entire day with medium usage. Try starting with that. Also, always make sure you have a backup of whatever you were on before flashing another rom to avoid serious issues.

No problem. Make sure you hit the thanks button if you find anyone's posts useful =).
The only thing you have to worry about kernel wise is making sure when you rooted that you flash an OS appropriate kernel. After that, every ROM made for this phone has a kernel available. If you want to flash a new kernel, you can do so at any time. Then you have to, again, pay attention to make sure it's OS appropriate. Ie. GB, ICS or JB.
Also, make sure you do the following:
Read the OP multiple times before flashing ROM.
1. Nandroid backup
1a. Factory Reset/Wipe (if called for in the OP or you have issues after flash)
2. Flash Jivy26 Kernel Cleaning Script (easily found by search - if dl in op doesn't work, read further in there thread, there is a working link)
3. Flash ROM.
4. Flash Gapps (if called for by OP. Also, make sure it's for your OS and inverted [or not] if need.)
Any issues? Try again including 1a.

hahaha you consider a preview kernel, with limited features/functionality and some bugs, to be the best kernel available to the vibrant?? or is it only the best because that's what you have?
i couldnt even mount my sd to my computer on that kernel.
im not trashing the dev by any means, thats why he called it a "preview kernel". but to come onto a thread and call it the best available is ignorant, and can be very misleading to inexperienced users.
Honestly , you should try it, It work so good, Speed is great! , No lag, Battery life is awsome., the only problem, the games open but for some reason close,/

So far battery life is ok for me, less than stock passion but thats expected for a preview. I am finding Live OC incredible, set clock speeds on the fly.
But overall Topshelf is right, its a PREVIEW, with more features and fixes to come, so its not best kernel as of right now, but imo soon
If you are interested and able to provide helpful feedback, I am looking for a few testers. My rom is based on 2.3.4 and is seriously debloated (120MB). If you need stock apps, this rom may not be for you.

If you're on stock ics (the official release) and someone told u there are speed improvements they lied. Any custom rom easily blows stock out of the water. Stock ( even when rooted) is basically for people who want to play it safe and for things to just work. If u want customization and speed ur best bet is an AOSP based rom. Good luck. Happy flashing.

....as to which ROM to go for!
I got my phone today after moving away from an iPhone 4 (naturally), and have rooted it already.
However, I cannot decide which ROM to go for!
I'm after a stock look and feel, but obviously with the enhancements you get with custom roms (better performance/bug fixes/potential overclocking etc).
Can anyone point me in the direction of a relatively stock mod that is absolutely awesome?
Hoping someone can help, I've gone through two pages of ROMs (so about 20 ROMs) and have no idea which is good or bad.

I may give dragon a go and if it sucks then just go back to stock - is there a sticky thread with stock roms anywhere or do we need to do a nandroid backup?
We as a community are not here to recommend Roms.......ALL roms are worked on by Devs that spend time trying to make a great user experiance. Least we can do is actually test them out and not rely on word of mouth to pick which one is better.
the same Rom someone is using is freaking awesome -- i may think is just not for me do to some little things that the Dev has added or taken away. so flash them all to your hearts content and you will find one that you just have to go back to.
for me right know its RGUI JB V7 build, before that it was RGUI MIUI that i had to have and before that i as a Foxhound rom guy.........take your pick from the dev thread. it wont take long before you pick one you like....especialy if you are looking for the stockish experiance/look

Oh god no! Someone less informed then you is asking a question! Run for the hills! Burn him at the stake!
If this guy at the site isn't as trustworthy as I felt, let me know and point me in the direction that YOU would prefer to see me take. I'm here because I'm open to suggestions and I'm aware most of you here are extremely knowledgable in a subject I'm not.
So, with that being said....
What do you suggest?

If you want stability go for Shostock2. Its an ICS rom but it is one of the most stable roms out there IMO

I could say the same thing for PhoneBricker even though it is no longer supported. Point is, as you know ninja, ROMS and kernels play differently on each phone. Also, each gives a unique user experience.
OP, flashing correctly takes about 10-15 minutes not including download time. So, not having time doesn't work as a reason. Not being rude. It's easy to do while you're:
Taking shower
Using the restroom
Washing the dishes
While you're surfing FB on your laptop/PC

Totally agree. I ran this for a long time before going to AOKP JB. If you don't want JB, ShoStock is the best ROM out there IMO.

Thanks!
Nice, Ill give shostock a go today. Gotta admit, the AOKP Jb stuff looks awesome with all the customizable options, but I feel with more bells and whistles comes more issues. I assume JB ROMS aren't going to be as stable.

Really? It takes me 3 minutes to flash something and restore everything.

No offense taken! I think my trepidation comes more from my experience with this phone....I did that official ICS update and it ruined my phone. Got a new one, and a ton of bugs made me frustrated. I finally did the root (which was stupid easy....like...really easy.) so I have a bit of confidence now.

Once you start flashing stuff with CWM the deepest trouble I have been in is needing a factory reset. But if you are really scared then go ahead and download all the return to stock + root files and mobile odin and stuff. I just did that in case of emergencies.

Takes that long for the ROM to flash. Then add kernel cleaner and Gapps. Then reboot + re-optimization... Taking closer to 10 minutes. Add a few more minutes and you've got a great estimate of 10-15. EVERYONE has 10-15 minutes in their day to flash a ROM considering it's hands off once you press "go". See my examples.
The post above this has a great tip for anyone who wants to be prepared for the worst.
