Hi & Thanks for the help - TouchPad General

Hi!
I just wanted to give a shout out.
I recently received a 32Gb version as payment for some PC work, and finally got around to installing the latest Android ICS / CM9 on it and i'm stunned with how easy it was. Once I had all 4 or 5 files/drivers it was nearly an automatic install.
So far, I'm impressed with CM9 and can see why people are interested in it (I have an Evo3D CDMA). The only thing that I've noticed so far that doesn't work is the camera. All the Gapps, Netflix, Dolphin Browser (it now syncs b/w devices using ur Google account!), email, video playback, etc seems to work well. Even got Remote Potato app running & connected to my Win7 Media Center.
Alas the only thing missing is a solid Oc/Uv kernel. Stuck at 1.118Ghz
Does CM9 support USB OTG or any other Rom /kernel combo?

I believe CM9 does support USB otg but it must have a power supply there have been a couple of threads on it in this forum and a VERY useful video/site here http://www.reverendkyle.com/index.php/articles/132-how-to-set-up-usb-host-mode-on-the-hp-touchpad .
As to over clocking DL an app called RomToolbox pro (free version) it can perform lots of tweaks including CPU management. I use the paid version so cannot be sure what is isn't included but it is well worth having anyway.
Welcome to the club you may also want to try AOKP remix by SGA in the development section of this site
and Random Kings new rom available via goo manager or directly from his site http://randomkings.wordpress.com/android/hp-touchpad/4-0-4-falcon/ which is what I am currently using.
Have fun .

Thanks,
I actually have an OTG setup for my Evo3D (Meanrom ICS) that works well with the TP also, I apparently didn't have it pressed all the way into the connector. Its working well now.

[Q] calkulins Rom

i just noticed that the "My Apps" button in the market now looks like a phone and says "sprint"
If i click on it it doesn't take me to my apps.
Anyone else having this problem?
That's normal for this build. If you click on your Menu, you'll find My Apps there.
Thanks you were right
Best ROM on XDA

I'm really enjoying this ROM. The speed of the machine is phenomenal.
Love the Rom ad well but can't seem to get the market updated or to show all apps. Any thoughts?
I've tried market enabled to no avail.
Issue with ROM or with G-Tab?
I've noticed that if I let the g-tab go to sleep, I'm having to reboot it get it to wake up.
Is anyone else having this issue? I've had my tablet since x-mas, but have nto used it much. It sat in a desk drawer for about 2 months, and I'm just now getting into using it.

I have this issue with every rom ive tried on my gtab. So now I pretty much just install clem's kernel everytime. Plus it gives me CIFS so I can stream media from my windows pc .

Yeah, again it's just the build. There are a ton of hacks that will get you more of the market, but I doubt you'll ever get "everything". Considering that the GTab wasn't blessed by Google, we're lucky to have the devs here to get the market at all.

Another issue with this ROM. Some have fixed it by going to Clemsyn's kernel, others to Pershoot's and still others by using CPU Master Free. Personally, I just set my tab's Screen Timeout to Never. What can I say...I like simple.

I agree. The only problems I see with it are no news and weather widget like on tnt, and the horrible photo album (I think it's from stock?)
Fireware
This may be a stupid question, so I am sorry if it is, but Calkulins v1.1 says it is "Based on rooted 2.2 / FRF91 - TnT 3991"...
so can you run it on the 1.1-3588 firmware, or will that brick?
Again, sorry for my ignorance...
Thanks!
ROM's and Firmware are the same thing. If you're asking whether you can use ClockworkMod or standard recovery, the answer is yes. Calkulin's ROM is a hybrid using the newer 3991 build for features but the older bootloader and recovery. It shouldn't cause you any trouble loading it over 3588.
Thanks! Sorry, I confused the firmware with bootloader, thanks for straightening that out!
No problem. Just want to make sure that I understand the question correctly. Happy modding!
All Done!
Woot!! I will say, I bought this on the woot! deal... and although I consider myself very computer savvy, I have never rooted/hijacked/whatever a device before...
Happily this was super easy! I wanted use the stock ROM for a bit to get familiar with it, but I just couldn't stand how slow/unresponsive/just crappy it was!!
So I jumped the gun and started in... luckily I did a lot of reading first!!
Loaded up Clockworkmod - and made a backup first!! lol
Used clockworkmod to install Calkulins ROM---OMG is it fast!!
The found that I was having the sleep-death issue... so I loaded up Clemsyns Kernel Too!!
Not a single hiccup! Even for a noob- this is super easy! Just follow all the great advice on the XDA forums (and don't skip steps!) and you can't screw it up.
Thanks to all the great people on here, for the hard work, and patience... I love seen good communities like this!
DeadEnd
Which version of Clemsyns is recommended?
Hi,
clakulins ROM is my prefered ROM so far
But, it needs some issues to be addressed to make it my daily driver.
1- sleep-to-death
I know we can use another kernel to fix this (so I keep this fix for later if everything else can work)
2- Settings/Family accounts/add member
This FC every single time. I definitly need this functionality. My Gtab being a family device....
3- Photos is horrible as previosuly pointed out in this thread. I want a centralized place for all my photos, or at least for local storage + picasa. With this gallery, we can only access picasa public albums. What about my own account !!!
4- Photos started to display pictures roatated one quarter to the left. It doesnt let me re-rotate them back to original. It does that for evey single picture, i cant fix this. Photos is now unusable
I tried a few Photos gallery apps from the market (6-7 so far). None of them works to my liking.
I just want somethings simple that get access to all my pics.
5- Cant play videos anymore. Not even the sample 'car' and 'king kong' that came with the Gtab.
If I can fix all of the above, calkulin will be my only and permanent ROM.
(ps items 4 and 5 were previously working ok in this ROM, this started yesterday)
Also, another things that is on my whish list:
- Have bluetooth HID
I have this blutooth keyboard collecting dust on the used parts shelve that I would like to use with the Gtab
thank you calkulin for all,
So, I decided to install clemsyn kernel to fix this sleep-death problem.
No problem installing, everything went well.
But now instead of comlaining that it cant play videos, it just FC on every videos I try to play.
I feel a complete reinstall will be necessary.

Why doesn't anyone use CM7 for G-Tab?

Are the mods of CM7 preferred over straight CM7? Also, just to get HW accel, should one stick with Vegan 5.1?
Just ordered my G Tab from Amazon and wondering what ROM I should jump to.
Thanks for your time.
Each ROM has it's fans but I've been running VEGAn 5.1.1 since it was posted and for me and my needs from a tablet it's rock solid without a bunch of force closes or other issues like I've read other people report about other roms or tweaks (like using different kernels) they've made to them after they've flashed a flavor of rom.
I use my gTAB for games, reading books/magazines/comics, accessing my work computers, watching ripped videos, watching flash videos on sites like HULU (needs hacked Flash) or Fox Television (doesn't need hacked Flash). And I've had access to the Market with almost every app I've needed or wanted show up without any tweaks.
In the end it's really up to the user and what the user wants out of their tablet.
I moved to the Vegan GB ROM mainly because, for some reason, Flash kept malfunctioning on any of the 2.2 ROMs I used. I miss watching videos, but hopefully a GB driver is forthcoming.
On the 2.2 side, I preferred Calkulin's ROM (with pershoot's Froyo kernel) because it was fast, and I also thought it was more tablet-oriented.
My advice is, while your tab is still new and you don't have it as customized as you will in the future, flash every ROM available and take them for a test spin. I'd run Calkulin's Format All zip before every ROM install just to be safe.

Considering how easy it is to do, I second this. It's pretty much what I did before settling on VEGAn 5.11, although I think I may try VEGAn Ginger again.
I am running CM7 on the Gtab without any issues. I chose CM7 rom since I am familiar with it because I am using that on my DInc.
Yeah I was considering VEGAn Ginger too. Let's see how much free time I have this weekend.
I am running cm7 on mine....since all the other versions are based off cm7 anyway. Cyanogenmod does an update and pushes it out...I don't have to wait for the others to update their source base from cm and merge in their rom edits.

I use CM7 with Pershoot's kernel and VTL Launcher. I've found it quite nice since they integrated in the tablet tweaks. I don't watch videos on it, though, so I haven't had to worry about hardware acceleration. Though, apparently, the last stable release and nightly gives some NVidia tuning, though not full hardware acceleration like Froyo, from what I gather.

You can get the hacked libflashplayer.so file for flash 10.2 here. You need to install the standard flash 10.2 first, though. It's available on the market, but you can also get it here if it doesn't show up in the market for you. I've been running it on CM 7.0.2 and it works great; just make sure to set your browser to desktop (in stock browser, Menu>Settings>Select User Agent; I set mine to linux desktop) and configure the run at boot file transfer script (instructions are in the post).

I have been running CM7 on my gTab since day 1. Very happy with it!
Download the attached zip to mount the internal SD card as /sdcard instead of /emmc if you wish.
You can also Google "CM7GBMod3.zip" to remove all unnecessary CM7 apps to give you a cleaner feel.

Anyone benchmark it at all? Like browser tests especially because that is where WebOS was infuriating.
Sunspider and Browsermark primarily. Also would be amazingly interested in seeing page load tests of a WebOS Touchpad next to a CM7 touchpad, if anyone has two of these things.

For what it's worth, touchstone won't charge
it puts it in dock mode, it trips the charger icon so you think it's charging, but it won't actually charge
kinda stinks, that's a major major bug to me
but I guess that's why it's called an Alpha build

Loving it. Hadn't touched my TP for months and had no hesitation to flash the alpha. I'd say for an alpha it is way ahead of most alphas. I'd almost call it a beta, but I guess some of the bugs, (like the wifi losing connection once in a while) are too big to be beta.

I read you can just grab maps and google apps that wont show up in the market from your phone and move them over. Just grab the .apks off the internet if you want. I just transferred over my TI Backup file and am reinstalling all the apps I want now, g maps is working for me.
I installed last night and so far it's great. The performance is great, no lags, all the apps I need\want have installed without any problems. The only issue I've had so is the battery drain makes it unresponsive so I had to power + home until it rebooted.
I got it loaded but the moboot option and recovery options did not work...so I could not boot back into webos. So I just flashed it back to Webos with the doctor. I think I will give it a little more time for the bugs to get hammered out.
Absolutely LOVE it. Super slick and fantastic for an Alpha build. 90% of the things i want for the tablet install and work without a hitch.
One nice surprise, my WebOS portion of my Touchpad was NOT wiped out in the installation. I booted into WebOS earlier, and to my surprise, everything was intact and exactly how it was left pre-CM7 install. I've been playing with it all day, and i must say, battery life has been great thus far. Tablet is showing almost 7hrs of use (display ON for about 5hrs) and still has 40% battery left!
love it. But it wiped everyhig on my webos. So now I have to figure out how to put my pictures and videos back
Overall I haven't had any problems. Can't wait for future updates
No issues except for wifi issues.
I'm running CM7, and I think it runs really well for an alpha release. I've had minimal problems and most problems are easily corrected and there are some workarounds appearing already.
Flashed CM7 yesterday. Seems more like a Beta than a Alpha build. I tried most of my apps and they work without issue. CM7 runs very well with minor hiccups. Some things I did after seeing others have issues
1-Wifi sleep policy set to never
2-Use Setcpu to OC to 1.5 and undervolt at 384 and I have no issues with the device waking up
3-Use the app "Myappsharer" to send the APKs from my Thunderbolt to the tablet and they install with no issues
4-Before I flashed CM7 I made a copy of everything on the TouchPad to my laptop in case it got wiped out.
This was my first time trying WebOs the past few weeks and I kind of liked it. I do not think I will be going back to it though. I definitely prefer the customization of Android.
I am really liking CM7. I installed it this evening and it seems to be chugging along. I was able to install Order & Chaos on it, but I had to change the build.prop in order to get it to run. It played better than I would have thought, for an Alpha version of the OS. I am going to try and overclock it to see if that smooths out the game.

[Q] Just How Reliable is CM7?

Throughout the forums there seem to be fairly conflicting reports about CM7 for the Touchpad, it crashes a lot, it mostly works, lots of apps don't work, most common apps do work.
Basically, how reliable is CM7?
I don't use too many apps, so for me it would mainly be for:
- Browser
- Gmail
- Google Docs
- Facebook
- Twitter
- Spotify
- Swiftkey (does the tablet version work?)
Oh, and the official Touchpad Bluetooth Keyboard.
Would I get a good experience out of the current build?
Some answers after 5 days using CM:
-in my case, no SOD, but it seems to vary
- dolphin hd (browser) works nicely
- SwiftKey x tablet also good
- 2 random reboots in 5 days
- facebook ok if you use fake gps to Set up your location (otherwise it crashes)

I have the official hp touchpad keyboard. It works really well once you get it paired. When it ask for the code on the tp put in 0000 then hit ok. As soon as your done hit 0000 on the the keyboard then hit enter. You have to do this really fast while the tp is running the ring on the screen getting ready to pair it. Good luck

One of the most stable "alphas" I've seen, more of a beta. Running Alpha2, a couple times a day I might have to cycle Airplane mode to get wifi back. This seems more frequent if hopping multiple APs. A couple apps you listed have issues;
- Google Docs - current version FCs, had to sideload old version 1.0.4r (search the forum, there are discussions on this)
- Facebook - FCs unless you run a fake gps app first
This morning I had to power cycle it to get touchscreen back, but even so I feel no urge to reboot into WebOS.

Everything except wifi is fairly reliable. I only have secured networks, so wifi constantly crashes for me. I'd wait for the next release if it was important to you.

As for me,
1. Market sometimes FC when installing (not a big deal)
2. Wifi drops occasionally and need manual reconnecting
3. Battery drain during sleep, at the rate of around 2 to 3% per hour
4. Scrolling a bit jerky for a dual core 1.5GHz device
5. Facebook FC without FakeGPS
Otherwise everything is working so far. But then I haven't tested everything.

I only got mine last night and got CM7 loaded within minutes of opening it. I had some problems with wireless until I switched mine to channel 6 from channel 11. It ran solid as a rock for a few hours until I shut it down for the night.
Renders all my various size and density photos (all JPG) quickly and very crisply.
Netflix ran good.
Youtube was okay.
My mp4s encoded for my Nook Color were all messed up (played but video was whacky, striped accross the screen, these play great on webOS)
Plays my MP3 without issue (need to move my album art over from my Nook Color)
Quadrant scores are pretty low (low 2000's) only due to the FPS graphics not being optimized (GPU acceleration probably is not finished.)

Browser is meh. But 3rd party Opera is fantastic. Nearly as smooth as safari on ipad.
Gmail is fantastic.
Google Docs is great.
Facebook sucks if you don't install a fakegps app or the older 1.5.2 apk that didn't need GPS.
Twitter's great..
Thats all I know. But I do know that the camera doesn't work (on EITHER of my CM Touchpads) and that each of mine have also had a random shutdown and refused to wake up (without me long pressing the power/home buttons repeatedly)... but that being said... very sweet stable for an Alpha. In fact, I think it's more stable than my phone, also on CM. And more importantly, it's better than WebOS if only for the app selection.
Compared to web os its 100% better some bugs but I haven't booted into web os since the first alpha.

have SOD's despite the fact that i've tried every work around i could find... actually the last one was probably due to the fact that the work around drained the battery... between that and the wifi i've pretty much given up on it until a more stable for me release. it is in very good shape though. i liked having a netflix tablet for a bit. wish HP had made it 16:9 but oh well.
anyway since you can dual boot i really dont' see any reason for people not to put it on there. Pulse newsreader is so damn cool on a tablet

oooo ill have to check it out. Thanks
Just installed yesterday and very impressed for an alpha build. Only get FCs for market and Facebook but realised that i need the fake gps. Did have to reboot the first time as apps wouldn't install saying i had no space. On the whole i like it and especially adobe reader as its miles more quicker and better quality than the WebOS version. But i do miss the WebOS interface so i can see what apps i'm running and throwing the cards away to close the app.

Kudos to TEAM-B on CM7

I've been trying to upgrade my 16GB NT to CM9 with limited success. Somehow the nightly builds just kept boot looping on the NT. I have gotten a solid release of my HP Touchpad. I got hold of the alpha CM9 0.05.1 version and finally got a good install which booted completely and worked OK except for the video acceleration causing Netflix and YouTube to give blank screens.
So I tried to go back to old root which had both B&N and ADW launched. I tried several methods which looked successful while I was using the CMW zip installs but they all resulted in a reboot into CM9 alpha. I have found a method to get me back to B&N/ADW (Veronica's Ribbon Root download link HERE) but I also stumbled on an SD card version of CM7 alpha final image from TEAM-B which worked great!
Well, I wanted an internal install version so I wouldn't be tied to the SD card boot and found TEAM-B's BETA version dated 20120713 for the CM (aka acclaim). I been working on it for several hours and many apps. This beast is really good. See the thred here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826.
Thanks TEAM-B for a really solid platform.
Testing update
Everything works as expected.
Netflix and YouTube work.
Email works.
The browser works really great. Much better than it did under ADW.
The Play Store is great as always.
The default music player works well. I also have tried Real Player Beta which also works well. My only complaint is fixing 'unknown artist' where I can't find a way to edit the artist name.
For your own downloaded videos, the default video player is great. I've also tried MxPlayer which also works well.
A really neat feature is the USB drive setting. If you have the device connected to your PC via USB, it doesn't automatically lock your device out. You need to select the up arrow in the circle on the status items (4th from the left), then select 'USB connected', and hit the 'Turn on USB storage' to get the drives visible to your PC (I'm running Windows 7 64 bit).
My VOIP app does not work since it has a problem getting the microphone active. The puzzling thing to me is that the Sound Recorder works. So it's not really the microphone per se.
Under the > Settings > Location & security settings > Change screen lock, you can set a lock code similar to the 4 digit code under B&N. You can also do an alpha numeric password instead of a simple 4 digit number if you'd like. However since you may need to enter it often whenever the timeout hits, I'd suggest keeping it simple.
I've not been able to break it yet.
It is rock solid. Anyone game for the challenge of finding a bug?

The only issue that I still see on occasion is the wifi will dropout then come right back after a few seconds. I have seen this on multiple networks and multiple streaming apps. hbogo, netflix, ustream. Does anyone else see this. Maybe everything didn't clear when I installed new rom?

I always have to connect wifi manually after reboot (SD version) - anyone else get it to come on automatically?
But yes, ITA it's been very stable overall and a great job from Team B, especially with fixing hardware acceleration. Thanks again!

My wifi connects automatically and it's stayed connected so far.

I have to turn my wifi on manually each time, too. I'm running the internal version on my NT16.
But seriously stable. Probably the best overall ROM I've used on any device in the past two years. Kudos, Team-B!

I had the wifi problem with the alpha version and also the first install of beta but when I went back to CM7 after trying CM9 I haven't had any problems with the wifi since.

I agree!!! I crashed my partitions while messsing with rim manager. If it weren't for CM7 I would have a 200$ paperweight!

.
I do not have the knowledge of the android developers, but my understanding is that @ShinnAsuka is correct. Sorry to say the 'version' of the chip inside does not contain the needed circuits. That is what I read.
