FYI: This is for Pre-Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (not 4.1 Jelly Bean - yes it's confusing) devices. 4.2 now has a much better feature for screen mirroring!
I'm just wondering if anyone else has thought of this. I know that it's not EXACTLY the same thing, but the principles are similar.
If the Nexus Q is just a media viewing device for $300, why wouldn't you just buy an Android tablet with MHL or HDMI out?
I happen to have the TF101 (original Nexus tablet IMHO) with Mini HDMI out. Newer Android tabs have Micro HDMI out. A lot of Android phones have MHL/microUSB-HDMI out. I did a quick google, found this and installed a VNC Viewer and VNC Server on both by HTC Sensation phone (running Android 4.1.2) and my TF101 (running Android 4.1.1).
I was able to remote control the tablet from my phone.
So since I have the full app catalog available to me through my TF101 (including Hulu, Netflix, Youtube, Pandora, Google Music, etc.) and I can use my Sensation to remote control it while connected to my LED TV - and also take it with me if I decide to go on a trip - why would I want to buy the Nexus Q???
Nexus Q main feature is the built in amplifier for passive speakers.

I thought the main feature was that it was a media link to your TV. What the heck else would people really buy it for?
I use my Droid Bionic with dock that has USB, micro HDMI and a Logitech K400 wireless keyboard as an extra HTPC in my other room. Works great for all media content.

The possibilities are endless. It gets even better as the 10/100 LAN support and NFC makes a connected home pretty easy.
The Nexus Q main feature is that it is a social media device. Sharing music and movies is the prime feature.
What VNC server?
As of 4.2.1, all VNC servers are broken, and there is no information about when (if ever) there will be a fix. Can your family handle a multi-month disruption of their media-viewing ability?

Hi All,
My dream, one that I hope Android can help me fulfill is to hook my Galaxy S2 to a HDMI tv, fire up remote desktop and by using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, effectively have a full desktop available.
I am yet to try hooking up my phone to a tv as I am waiting for the MHL cable, but issues I envisage are the following:
1) When the screen is mirrored on the TV, the RDP program will not use the TVs display show 'full screen'. I have installed some RDP applications and they allow you to select the resolution so perhaps this will resolve the issue
2) Are there any RDP applications that allow bluetooth keyboard and mouse entry?
This is the hold grail for me!! Many a time I have stayed in a hotel for work or holiday and not had my laptop with me and wished for such a solution. Combine this with Wake On Lan and it's perfect!
I hope someone can help!

RDP programs should just take any inputs from your phone and pass them onto the remote machine so BT kb/m should work ok IMO. Not sure about the mirroring but if it is fullscreen on the phone then maybe the MHL cable will upscale for the TV.

I'm waiting for the cable before I can try. In fact I would have had it by now but my girlfriend wants to buy some stuff for me for my bday and I believe she's already ordered it!

I've been doing some reading around and have found that BT keyboards and a mouse will work no problem.
I tried my MHL cable with the Android VNC viewer app and allows you to fit to screen but does not output at the tv's native res.
I have had similar experience with Remote RDP, it just mirrors the phone's native resolution. Hopefully this kind of thing will be supported soon, including internet browsing at 1080p.

Perhaps, this kind of program may help to format the resolution?
Am I missing something? If you got a bt keyboard and bt mouse and the phone to tv hdmi, don't you have it all? Why would you need a remote desktop or vnc software?
Well, you'd have it all except for USB, which you might be able to live without.

If it could pump out the full Remote Desktop resolution then you will effectively have a full desktop through your phone rather than just have the phone's software capability.
Fair enough you can surf the web and play a video but what if I want to use full excel or Word, and multi-task like on a desktop.
I've still not received my cable so I don't know whether the browsing the net with the phone's browser is legible on a big screen.
In my earlier post I complete missed off the applications name - LCD Density - haven't tried and I don't know if it's compatible with the SGSII, but sounds like it changes the native resolution of the phone.
Try Splashtop as your vnc app it is the only one to my knowledge that can stream audio almost perfect and video pretty good over vnc and works like a charm on the atrix.
Did you find a good BT keyboard that works well with the Evo? I'd prefer one with a built in trackpad, as my goal is to use this on the road (ie, airports, trains, etc), and would like to have an all-in-one keyboard/mouse.
The one thing that I haven't had time to tinker with have been HDMI goggles that can give a virtual display. Has anyone tried these w/ the Evo's mini-HDMI output?
I was watching a movie via mizuu movies on my Motorola Zoom (which was connected to my HD TV via the official Motorola Mini-full HDMI cable. And the only way I could pause, rewind, stop, and so on, and so onwas to use the Motorola Bluetooth mouse, which was tricky on my couches material.
I just thought it would have been easier if I could control the xoom using my HTC desire HD. Would any developer be interested in making a remote control app that does android to android connection via Bluetooth with nice ui that would allow me to pair my desire HD to my xoom and use it to control and\or select media on my xoom?
Also, an app that could toggle my xooms screen off but leave the live output (via the hdmi cable) on my TV would be great. (A little like on a PC with two monitors. Where you can choose to one screen, the other screen, extended desktop or mirrored output)
I have searched both XDA and Google for viable solutions but so far no joy. If anyone could help or provide information on a product currently available then please get in touch. I would pay for an app like this. And if it was made available free then I would make a donation towards further development.

I've always owned Apple products so this is a little foreign to me. I've noticed DLNA 'servers' to make non-DLNA devices like the iMac make sure of DLNA... but that just sounds like a streaming cloud service?..nothing special, no?
I know the possibilities are endless.. but i'm just curious how everyone puts the cool feature to use/applying it.

I don't think I am understanding what you are asking, but I'll try to explain it. Apple has utilised streaming to devices using their own proprietary tools. This ensures that it will always work, because Apple has designed it but the problem is, not all devices support the "Apple" standard and Apple won't let all of them do such.
DLNA is a standard that allows you to share media over a network with a wide variety of devices.
A couple examples of devices that support DLNA
HDTV's (With WiFi or NIC Cards)
Google TV
Playstation 3
XBOX 360
Newer DVD and Blu-Ray Players
Windows Media Player
Boxee
Roku
There are more, but this is just an example. With the Galaxy S II I decided to do a test when trying to drain my battery and I was curious as to how much it could handle, this also can give you an idea of some potential that you can use DLNA for.
In my SGSII I have a 32GB Class 2 MicroSD card. On it I keep a selection of Music and HD Movies. From my SGSII I started up the DLNA Sever, then I started playing a movie on it. I fired up my Google TV and started streaming a HD Movie on that, then my PS3. I decided to truly push the limits and then started streaming on my Desktop, Laptop, and my Eee Pad Transformer.
In a 1 Bedroom apartment, that's overkill, but think about it like this. You go to someone's house for a party, and want to share your music. They have multiple devices in multiple rooms and you have a large varied collection. You can use your phone on their WiFi Network as the media device. Offering up different music in different rooms. That's where the value in DLNA can come from.

I'm looking for the best software for streaming audio/video from android to android, t his question is 2 fold.
1 I would like to use my old POS zte racer android device with a resistive screen and 3.2mpxl camera as a video monitor in my babies room, over wifi hopefully
2 I would like to duct tape an old android device to the front of my RC monster truck and drive it through an apple store... on fire. Over 3G or perhaps wifi hotspot from my good phone, shared with the duct taped bumperdroid.
IP Camera app?
Whilst it is not a bespoke android to android solution one option available to you would be to an install an ip camera app on the POS device and simply view its feed via the browser of your good phone. I have had good success using this system monitoring a cat with a zte blade as the camera.
I would recommend the app IP Camera for the POS

There is also a supported viewer app for your good phone although I personally just used the browser. Tiny cam monitor
One thing to highlight is with this solution you could also view the feed on a bigger screen such as a tablet / laptop etc.

Justin seems to be more of a broadcast system than a surveillance system, though I appreciate the thought and I think I could use that for something else, the IP camera app managed to run the entire weekend straight and it still going, and it provides authentication and live streaming to VLC that I can bring up on my TV and computers as well, ultimate baby monitor

Yes, the article isn't about N10 per se, but it has relevant info about Miracast that would translate to N10--whenever Goog can deliver on its claim of Miracast being a 4.2 feature rather than a phone-specific feature. Salient points from the piece:
"Both the Nexus 4 and Optimus G feature Miracast. On the Nexus 4, it’s supported through Android 4.2’s Secondary Displays...On the Optimus G, it’s part of the standard OS and can be enabled with a tap on a dedicated toggle in the notification shade’s Quick Settings area.
"Josh’s demonstration included browsing a photo gallery in full-screen mode on the TV, playback of HD video (an MKV file, no less), web browsing, and a game of Angry Birds. The phone can send output to the Miracast display from an application – for example, a video – and continue to use the phone normally. One of the things I wondered about Miracast was how it can maintain two wifi connections with a single radio. If the above is true, then it can't, so you can't do something like streaming Netflix from online, through your device, to the TV. This would put a massive damper on Miracast's appeal if you can't access the net (via wifi) while using Mira... Hmm, may be that's why Mira isn't available on N10. It only has wifi.
Also interesting that Mira implementations are different on OptiG and N4.

Well I can't wait for android to actually allow wifi streaming apps like 'MirrorOp Sender' apps (plenty more on the market) get root access to the 'screen image'.
That is the only issue I am having, I have successfully used the Nexus 7 as my PC monitor with 'MirrorOp Receiver' as well as actually controlling the PC (windows 7) from the nexus with the same app, however as soon as I try to connect my Nexus 7 to the Qumi projector it informs me that root access is required, and to be quite honest I am not at all interested on rooting the nexus, I believe Google should include these things on the OS as they announced they would on JellyBean 4.2... a bit disappointing it still isn't out!
