hi everybody, because of the huge battery drain,(because the phone stays always on H+), i would like to change it to go full edge, because as i always using a pc or near of one, edge is perfect, for the notifications and that stuff.
currently im using the "Super Nexus Build 4, and his kernel([email protected])",
when i go to options and enable the 2G option, it works, but after an hour or so, it goes back to 3g, and a couple of minutes later, it stays again on H+
i tried changing the Band selection, and selecting just GSM(because im from south america), but nothing changes...
any suggestion?
Thanks!

He wants data, just slow. But it won't help him.
OP, your problem isn't staying on 2G vs 3G, unless you have VERY bad 3G reception - switching to 2G only won't help. Look for the reason of your battery drain, check if your data connection is used excessively and by what app.

i always have good signal, but when i reach a point where the signal decrease, but alot, i mean, from 4 bars to 1, the edge connection goes into 3g, and therefore to h+ and stays on there.
dunno what else to do.

As Jack_R1 said, you need to find the cause of your battery drain. If your data connection is actively downloading something, then you have something running in the background that is pulling data constantly. Switching to 2g will not make a significant difference in your battery usage.
If your signal is bouncing between H and 3g or edge, this will drain your battery. A few roms have a built in toggle. TASKS aokp has it. I use it all the time and I can make my phone last 2 days with it being on edge

on my captivate i used to be able to set the network selection to use auto, 3G only and Edge. i dont see these options in wireless settings, i jsut see an option to select network. is there a way to set it to only use 3G?
No because the phone only shows either E for edge or H+ for 3G or HSDPA.
More than likely you could get an application from the market that lets you switch and see if that works, but.... what's wrong with the way it manages data now?

Newer phones are using "smart" radio management chips (or something like that). The newly released Thunderbolt is the same way. Which sucks because it was a good tool for battery management
it sometimes switches to edge and i wanted to force it to stay on 3G. my captivate would do the same thing and keeping it on 3G worked fine.
is there any hacks to add this setting?

Lol it switches to edge because you don't have a 3G ssignal; what else is it supposed to do if you don't have it?
You can choose (for throat part) to go down but you can't just magically get a better/faster signal.

I was just stating what I said to inform people, just in case someone thought you could force 3G at ALL times, which isn't possible if you aren't getting 3G in your area.

i think you have to redo the setting when you reboot.
Edit: i just notice that it also changes back when i plugged it in overnight. is there a way to keep this setting permanently?
I too am needing to set my phone to connect to Edge only. I have 1 bar at the house when my network type is HSDPA. When connected to HSDPA at the house, with one bar, I constantly get dropped calls or my phone may not ring at all. If the phone decides to connect to Edge, which has a full signal, then everything seems to be a-ok. Most of the time the phone completely disconnects from all networks when it switches from HSDPA to Edge... not cool.
I can not get this sucker to connect to Edge only via setting the preferred network type to WCDMA. The phone will automatically set itself to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) if I manually try to set WCDMA as the preferred network.
Rather annoying to say the least. ATT is the only carrier that has a full signal at the house. That's the only reason I that I signed up with them.

thats because wcdma is 3g only. you need to the GSM option, thats edge.
GSM=edge only
wcdma=3g only
GSM auto=3g or edge, phone decides depending on signal strength
Im so pissed off at this phone. Supposed to be fast but my browsing experience sucks because of this delay between 3g/h+
Before I get flaimed I have read before, I tried fast dormancy off, I tried disabling H+ and putting 3g only but the same delay exists. I also tried putting the phone in wcdma mode so edge gets removed.
I don't know what to do, I came from an iphone 4 and although the pages load slower because of hardware I could actually see the data progress going and loading up, here my sgs2 just stands for 10 seconds doing nothing and then loads up the page fairly quick.
Sometimes it doesn't even load and says page could not be loaded even though I have the h+ icon on.
Now If anyone experiences this and has some sort of fix plz let me know.
Im running westcrip 9.6 with lph, and have had this issue in previous roms too.
My network is Claro Dominican republic
Thanks
I have a similar problem! In my case the phone suddenly switches from H to 3G, I don't know why, and then goes back to H. This happens while I'm using browser, generally when I activate data connection and I don't use anything, it remains on 3G
My problem is that sometimes the delay may be 2 seconds and its managable but then it can go up to 15 or not do anything at all.
Same problem, I thought it's ok, but if it's not, then how to manage your data, without any delays?
just in case for someone who might know how to fix your problem u should give them/us information about:

carrier and location (country) would be good too.
EDIT: whoops, saw it's in the first post. Sorry.
Its normal to go from G to H+ when data is in use. As soon as the phone detects that it needs to access the network, it will achieve the H+ connection. Apparently it will kill the battery if its always on H+. This, I understand. But the part I do not understand is the delay from G to H+. I am not sure if its a carrier issue for most of us, or the phone itself. I am assuming its a carrier issue though as it has happened on every ROM or Modem I have tried from personal experience. Not sure about the OP. It does seem to take some time at times to get from G to H+ - upwards of 15 seconds or more. Also, if it can't get H+, it will not browse at all on 3G

Yep, same problem in Moscow. It's probably related to device, nor to carrier. Kinda odd.

I don't think so. Seems to be a device issue. I just took a look at my Blackberry Bold 9900 I use for work and it always has H+. It doesn't go to 3G and then to H+ like the SGS2 does. And when I browse on that, its always ready to go, no delay. Not sure why our SGS2 needs to handshake H+ everytime
In my case it seems to depend upon the modem I use. kL1 works really well, however when I trialed ICS it was really slow as described.
Also, far less related, as for the mention of browsing, I use Dolphin and find that it seems to be much slower at either DNS lookups or redirects or something.
It's most likely because of your carriers settings. There's nothing you can do unless you call them questions about what their policy is at their end on data connectivity.
Ever since I've transferred to AT&T I've had laggy data issues. I finally rooted/flashed to AOKP, and while trying to address the issues of no APNs appearing or saving and no signal status in the status bar, I've come to find both AT&T and T-Mobile as Available Networks under some network setting. Am I chasing ghosts here, or is there something actually up?
EDIT: So I really need help troubleshooting the issue. I'll logcat, dump, or whatever necessary. I've been in many cities/areas and this problem persists: if I haven't used data or the phone hasn't been backgrounding traffic, it'll take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds before a connection is made when I try to access an internet-related function on my phone (even though 3G/H is displayed in the status bar). Out of shear frustration (this has been happening since I got the phone, under stock ROMs and now under AOKP), I tried messing with *#*#info#*#*. I changed WCDMA-preferred to WCDMA-only -- no improvement. Oddly, I also tried GSM-only. Well, great improvement! Even though I only have E, there is absolutely no latency in waiting for a connection -- so pages and other data end up loading faster on Edge than 3G !
I have absolutely no idea why my phone takes forever to make a connection. Under 3G, I see only but a few upstream network activity blips (even under full bars) for as much as 30 seconds, before there is any downstream activity (and when it comes, it comes). Can anyone help???
P.S.: I'm going to try using a friend's SIM later for comparison.

The phone displays 3G because thats what it is... then when data is being processed, it shows H because its using the "what AT&T calls 4G but its really HSPA" side of the network. For just standby time with no data, its going to show 3G because HSDPA is traffic, not standby.

Well that's strange. I'm used to phones displaying what network-level they are capable of. So why would it not just display H for HSPA+ when HSPA+ service is available, instead of only displaying under traffic.
I'm going to go ahead an edit this thread to help troubleshoot what I think to be the main issue.
After some trials I see that the network indicator switches back and forth between 3G and H a few tines before making the connection and transmitting data. Hmmm...
Basically, "4G" will eat your battery alive so the phone idles at 3G and jumps to H+ only when you use data. If you were on a "stock" ATT rom it would always read H+, but this is technically false since when its idle the phone sits in 3G. CM9 and AOKP accurately display it which is why you see the switch.

I have a HTC Amaze for a phone and the Galaxy S2 is my media player. Sometimes, when I don't feel like carrying around two devices, I put my T-Mobile SIM in the galaxy and use it as my phone. I must say, Edge is not as slow as I remember it being. Maybe speed is contingent on network traffic. If thats the case, instead of using crowded "faux G" networks, I may defer to Edge to save battery life and get good dl/ul rates.
My phone does the same thing. I noticed it sometime ago. When idle 3g. Internet I get H+. This is with both Shostock2 and Phone Bricker. I was curious to know too but just blew it off because it really doesnt make any difference to me as long as Im getting decent speeds. Im not even with ATT anymore. Went with Straight Talk. Which uses ATT towers. Cant beat the price!!
They don't have the correct apns, but that symbol problem is because the phone doesn't use hspa+ passively, only actively. It causes some lag when downloading, but it is faster fit large data. But your problem is due to a supposed imei range with bad modems. Rehash stick, fix the triangle, and return it.

I'm pretty sure that phones will only go to H+ if they actually need it. Hence you'll find that if you start requesting data, it will switch over to H+ again, and then revert to basic H when it's done. Probably not an issue.

To expand to what anthropolyte said, the GS3 has a Fast Dormancy mode, where it'll connect to H+ network when is truly needed (heavy surfing/streaming, etc), and when the phone is mainly idle or doing light/periodical syncing, it'll switch back down to H or even 3G to conserve battery. As far as I know, Fast Dormancy must be supported by your carrier (which it does in your case) and must have a compatible phone to toggle between different network mode (GSM/HSPDA/UMTS, etc) to increase battery life.

Good day all!
I've been experiencing some issues since I got my C6806 3 weeks ago. I live in Toronto and my provider is Rogers. The phone itself is unlocked and is just running the stock software which is 4.2.2, build # 14.1.B.2.257
Ever since I got the phone I've had a periodic issue where the phone signal strength will just completely die out to 0 bars, then it'll come back to full bars about 30 seconds later. It happens whether I'm home or out on the road. It happens if I'm using LTE bands or 3G or HSPA. It also happens whether I've got wifi on or off.
Any troubleshooting steps you could suggest?
Thanks in advance!

How's LTE and HSPA where you are? If the signal is poor it'll switch over to the next thing on ladder. If you have a poor LTE signal it'll jump down to HSPA, and if you have a poor signal on that one it'll jump down to EDGE. It's the same dance if you walk into an area where there is good LTE coverage. It jump up from EDGE or HSPA to LTE, and iin all cases when it switches, you'll notice a couple of seconds where it connects to the new frequency (by having zero signal). That's why I disable LTE when I know I'm going to be in an area with poor LTE signal for a long period of time.
Not saying that this is your problem, but try only using EDGE for a couple of hours and see if it happens again.

LTE and HSPA coverage by Rogers in Toronto is great overall. I don't really use the LTE APN because it seems to suck up battery life immensely. I just keep it in the normal APN that seems to switch randomly between HSPA and 3G. The issue can occur if I'm just sitting still in a spot. I'm using it, and all of a sudden the signal just cuts out for about 30 seconds and comes back. Both before and after the incident I am usually at full bars.
I'm unsure of what EDGE is. The only things I control are the APNs I obtained from Rogers - one is just the standard one that gives me 3G and HSPA, and the other is LTE.
Dunno what else I can really do. I doubt it's my provider so it's gotta be the phone. Any other real troubleshooting steps to try, or should I just get this to Sony?

EDGE is 2G. so turn off LTE and HSPA+ and see if it does it.
I don't have the LTE equipped phone so I'm not sure if these hardware functions will switch on and off randomly.
It sounds like your hardware is switching between 4g and 3g. problem is that both wont work simultaneously, so you would get this drop off. solution is that build prop edit i gave you.
But then you'd have 4g on all the time. so if you don't want that then turn it off manually.
Try these.
Edit your build.prop file.
(do you know how to do this??)
and insert these.
___________
ro.ril.hsxpa=3
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.hep=1
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=20
ro.ril.hsupa.category=7
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1

that will stop hardware switching between 2g/3g/4g
as well as make it faster.
Settings->More...->Mobile Networks->Network Mode->GSM Only
You'll still have mobile data, but it will be SLOW. I think the top speed is around 400KB/sec, but you'll only use this to check if your signal is more stable without 3G/4G.
Tip: If you want to save battery and you aren't the type that uses a lot of mobile data, use EDGE (the thing i'm currently writing about). 4G uses a lot of juice.

Thanks. Just made the change and will keep an eye on it over the next day or two.
Just gotta say holy crap this Edge thing is SO slow. Even just loading icons on Google Plus or Youtube searches takes forever. A mobile speed test is showing about 133 kbps...
Damn... gotta come up with a better solution that doesn't require having slow as shyte data access
I'm trying WCDMA only to see how this might work. At least the speeds are more tolerable there.

Yeah, but keep using it for now. You're only checking if the signal drops while your on it, so I'm not saying that you should keep using it. It's only for a couple of hours. You can do it!

*sigh* I'll try
lol
EDIT. Nevermind the part below. I just kept trying more SMS apps until I settled upon GO SMS and it seems to finally be able to load photos. Damned weird the default one wouldn't do it
On another note, can anyone explain why the built in Messaging app has issues both sending and recieving photos? Plus there're a few instances where it says I've got a message, but I've viewed them all. I've even tried downloading a few other messaging apps from the Play store, and they can't seem to view or send photos either. Damned weird if you ask me.

I'm not using the stock messaging app. I'm using Hangouts as my main SMS app, but I didn't have any issues with it when I used it. The Android 4.3 update is released now, so you can update to it through PC Companion? Note that this will remove root and stuff like if you're rooted. If not, go ahead.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just want to say that I'm having the exact same issue. I thought it might have occurred after I installed a custom room but I'm now back on stock and still experiencing 4 bars immediately dropping to no service and then going back to 3 or 4 bars before slowly dropping back to zero. I figured it could be LTE, so I experimented with all settings under mobile networks to no avail. I try the same Sim in my note 2 in the same location and I have no issues. I believe this is an issue with the antenna or a general hardware fault. My phone is the c6806, originally on Bell but being used on Telus. I have already contacted Sony but they are giving me the runaround
Anyone know how the warranty is handled in Canada? Anyone else have this problem?
Signal issues
Sorry I'm restarting this thread one more time.. But anyone figure out a fix? I'm having the same problem on a brand new phone... I had the same phone before I lost it. Got it again but these signal dropping issues now . Never had these on my previous cc6806
