[Q] Risks on flashing a boot.img? - HTC EVO 3D

Hi guys,
I'm getting a little problem installing the cyanogenmod 9 on my device, so I founded that I have to "fastboot flash boot boot.img" when i flash cyano. I know how to do that, but I want to ask you: I kept s-on to prevent damages on my smartphone, are there any serious risks flashing boot that way?
Thanks,
Ruben.

As long as you flash the right one, i dont think so but i am not sure. I s offed few weeks back, i can recommenf it

as long as you flash an evo 3d(cdma OR gsm) boot.img you shouldnt have a problem. At the most the phone will bootloop which can be corrected by flashing the correct boot.img from bootloader

Flashing a cdma boot.img on a gsm and vice versa can brick your phone if i'm correct.. That's why some flashable kernels have shooter and shooteru files.

As I've read, shooteru is the GSM version isn't it? By the way, I'm SURE the boot is correct, because I take it directly from the ROM I'm going to flash, that is exactly for my device

Shooteru i gsm yes, if you take the boot.img from the rom it shouldn´t hurt.. since flashing the rom itself is doing the same. It's just a kernel.

I'm doing it, let's see if it works

that why i included the OR its either cdma or gsm. different devices as far as the kernel is concerned

Uff, the ROM keeps rebooting infinite times! Now I'm trying to reflash the rom and boot.img...

First do a full wipe, install rom and then flash kernel
sent from my almighty forbidden viper evo3d

I did this before n i got wifi error so i flash back to custom kernel to get back my wifi. Is there any way to fix wifi error after flashing stock boot.img?

Done... Something like, uh, 5 times... Didn't worked...

What is your hboot? If its 1.53 the rom wont boot. This hboot is known to have issues with CM. I would suggest you try out some other ics rom for now.
You should get s-off and downgrade your hboot if you want agrabrens CM

Wifi not working in stock kernel means that the stock kernel isnt compatible with the rom you are trying to run. You could look for a kernel with the most stockish setting. I think anryl, coolexe and "the other one" all can be set up to behave mostly like the stock htc kernel. Just have to tweak it right

I just want to point out to the op that anything you flash on your phone has the potential to damage your phone and worst case scenario: bricking your phone. Just make sure you research and do a lot of reading. But I'm pretty sure you already knew that.

2. after im done with FULL WIPE...what should i do first...? either install rom from SD or 'Fastboot flash boot boot.img'....?
Hope you guys can help me...n sorry for my broken english...THANKS

S off or s on? Your phone comes s on, with s off you dont.need fastboot flash. Full wipe in.recovery > wipe all user data + dalvik and cache.
First flash the rom, then flash.kernel
sent from my almighty forbidden viper evo3d

full wipe, install rom, then flash boot.img,
Assuming you have a custom recovery installed, you will have an option to do a full-wipe.. It wipes a few partitions on your device and I believe cache from your phone... It does not wipe your personal data on the sd (other than apps installed on phone) card so don't worry about that. He meant install the rom first then fastboot flash boot boot.img in fastboot.

If you are using fastboot to flash the boot.img, why not just start your recovery with fastboot using the following command:
fastboot boot recovery.img (where "recovery.img" is the name of the recovery file you flashed)
That will put your recovery in a mode where it can flash boot.img as part of the ROM or kernel zip and then you won't have to extract it to flash it separately. You also need to disable SmartFlash (S-ON) in the tools menu if you are using 4EXT recovery when using the fastboot method.

[Q] Cool ICS V2 Questions

I have a gsm evo 3d, unlocked and rooted, s-on
I have managed to make ICS Nonsense rom work on the phone, but whenever i try to flash the COOL ICS V2 rom it gets stuck in bootloop.
The process i use is
- In CWM wipe data, cache and dalvik
- install the rom(COOL ICS V2)
- poweroff and reboot into fastboot
- in cmd i use-> fastboot flash boot boot.img (for the boot.img that comes in the rom)
-Then reboot the phone
After this it is stuck in bootloop, does anyone know the Fix? or did i do it wrong as the same process worked for the nonsense rom.
I think its time for you my friend to S-off your phone in order to be full supported-able to run roms/kernels/addons with no problems you better S-OFF it

try flashing the rom with 4EXT recovery, or with Flash Image GUI. With these recovery programmes you have more chance to succeed and you can even flash kernels with them.
Good luck.
The rom does not ask for s-off, and i am still trying to s-off at the moment will try the 4ext and other process

I don't know how it is on the GSM side, but I know that the ICS ROMs cause bootloops for people who are S-On. It does not happen to everyone, but it seems that almost everyone who has bootloops is s-on. If you can get s-off (again, I don't know much about GSM), you may have better luck.

Bootloop.. And softbricked! Helpp

hey everyone!! i really need u guys' help, my phone is either softbricked or stuck in bootloop right now. heres what happened, i have gsm evo 3d and i just got it s-on. everything was good, was on stock ics rom with superuser. made a backup using 4ext recovery so i thought i was good to go and tried flashing a sense 4 rom. after flashing, it got stucked in a bootloop and i later found out that i have to flash the boot.img. and so i did, but it didnt help. so this is where i panicked and went wiping and formatting and tried restroing the 4ext recovery backup i made and now... its stuck in the htc logo. means i soft bricked it?
If you can still get into recovery, you are ok. Maybe try to flash a sense 3.6 Rom (flashing the boot.img separately).
I also recommend getting s-off as that makes flashing easier.

yea but all i have right now is a GB rom from LeeDroid, downloaded that as it is one of the steps to getting s-off. will this work? or must i need a sense 3.6 boot.img? this is my first attempt on rooting and already facing bootloop :O talk about scary! ahaha
As it has been said if you can get into recovery you should be ok. Flash a non ICS Rom.
And you'll get past the boot loop. To flash an ics Rom get s-off that hay you'll have no problems. Saying that if your stock ics you might not be able to downgrade your hboot ansld therefore you can't get s off.

i just tried flashing leedroid gb rom and its still stucked in bootloop and when i formatted sd card, my 4ext backup was gone too. please help :'(
I see that coal is offline so ill try to help a little. The reason you bootlooped after restoring a nandroid is because you're not s-off and you didn't boot recovery from fastboot, you couldn't write to the boot partition. I'm gonna take a guess and say that your boot is corrupt. To get past this. You need to boot a recovery from fastboot. Do you know how to do that? Do you have adb set up?
Take the more useful advice.... Ignore this. It's probably way off ....
How did you format your sd card.
If you can get to your recovery, I presume you can as you flashed the rom.
Mount USB storage in CWM or whichever recovery you have. You can flash a Rom as explained previously and it will boot fine.

He said he started with an ics stock rooted rom, he can't just flash a gb rom and expect it to work. That'll be booting a gb rom with an ics kernel.

If you don't have adb set up yet, I'm gonna say running an ruu is the fastest way to get your phone working again.

gimme the steps or guides so i have a reference guys. thanks a bunch! im gonna head off to bed first, havent slept for a day because of this i only rooted because i want sense 4. see what htc put me through because it didnt come with official sesne 4 update T__T please teach me how to fix this. literally dying over here.
I'll look for the stuff you need and post it when I find it. You're gonna need either an ruu or you're gonna need adb, and actually, I'm not sure but you might have to relock before running the ruu which means you need adb. Gimme awhile and ill post with some links.
im not sure what does adb and RUU mean. but adb, isnt that the thing with the cmd.exe when unlocking via htcdev?

Yes, ADB is used in the command prompt, do you have it

Rom update utility. Allows you to install roms. Could be a life saver for you.
Android debugging bridge. Runs on your phone and computer, you issue commands through your computer. Put simply, yes like command prompt.

Here is a link to the RUU's, make sure to get the one for your phone. I saw a lot of GSM RUU's but i dont know what carrier you have.
Here is a pre packaged adb installation kit.
You'll need adb installed to use the RUU because you're unlocked and it'll only run on a locked bootloader.
Once you get it installed, you need to find a recovery image. Put the recovery image in the same folder that adb and fastboot are in (platform tools folder) and rename it to recovery.img. Hold shift and right click in that folder and choose to open in terminal. Put the phone in hboot and plug it into the computer. Now Press power to select fastboot. Then type
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
You should now be in recovery and you can flash whichever rom you want to, or restore your nandroid.

EVO 3D CDMA ICS Help

SHOOTER XC SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.50.0000
eMMC-boot
It is Rooted and running the Sprint 2.17 odex ROM 2.3.4 Gingerbread
With TWRP Recovery.
I've been reading forums for three weeks. No one has given me a clear answer.
What I want to do is get ICS. Now before you all facepalm and say "Use the wire trick noob" It's not that simple.
My phone was flashed to Boost Mobile. I didn't flash it and I have not the slightest Idea how to flash and according to support at http://www.unlimited.io The wire trick will clear my flash. So the wire trick is a no no.
Now there was a method where you flash the boot.img using fastboot
"fastboot flash boot boot.img"
It pushes it and says success.
Then I reboot into recovery (vol down and power button)
and flash the ROM. It bootloops every single time.
I've been looking for a way to S-Off safely with no luck, so now I'm determined to master the flash process. All i want is One working ICS ROM for my device.
Thanks in advance for the help, Nova.

Why don't you just flash a stock gingerbread ROM them stock recovery and relock your bootloader then take the ota update , let it install then unlock via HTC Dev again...
from what I learned from being S-ON with 1.5 unlocked, you have to:
flash the boot.img file BEFORE flashing the ROM. extract it from the ROM push it via fastboot, enter recovery via fastboot then wipe wipe WIPE everything except your SD card 3X, flash ROM, enjoy ICS goodness

If you are booting recovery via fast boot and then flashing a ROM, there is no need to flash boot.img separately. The recovery will work as if you are s-off. And there is no logic in wiping partitions 3x.....
Or you can directly flash a ROM from recovery without booting recovery via fast boot, and then flash boot.img via fast boot.
Or use 4ext recovery and turn smart flash on, and flash ROMs directly without using fast boot.

As far as I know, both unknownforce's, and the wire trick to downgrade the bootloader to hboot 1.4 will erase your flash to boost... Ask me how I know...lol!
Have you tried the app flash image GUI? When I was s on, I used this app to flash the kernel, then I went to recovery, and flashed the Rom, and all worked as long as the kernel was compatible with the specific Rom I was flashing, maybe you can try flashing the VM leak kernel, then an ics Rom

That's just the way its ever worked for me so I found it was worth giving out my way at least as an opinion I know once you boot into recovery via fastboot is SUPPOSED to work that way, never did for me hence my weird method. Wiping partitions may not have any logic to you sir, but to some of us it does back from the OG EVO days, that's what devs there used to post, that's what I've gone with as a routine for myself.
I've known peeps who attempt the ROM first boot then reflash boot.img after- endless powercycle. Never happened when I tried it but eh
4EXT wasn't always around so I guess I'm still trying to get used to easier flashin on this phone. I enver used smart flash on this one because when I was S-ON I did it the fastboot method, then the Unknown Force method came to be and I never had a need for it.
Evo 3D on Boost S-off but problems with ICS ROMs
Background:
EVO 3D (CDMA) flashed to Boost Mobile. Sept 2011

ROMs ROMs ROMs until about 6 months ago (currently using Eternity Infected Rom 1.4.2)
Tried to go to ICS and had problems so did S-off wire trick Aug 2012 (Lost Boost Mobile flash) Had to reflash to Boost.
Now:
****Unlocked****
Shooter XC Ship S-OFF RL
HBOOT 1.50.0000
baseband 97.10.0808
I'm in a quandry at this point of what to do next.
I'm not able to successfully load any of the new ROMs. I tried just upgrading to Infected ROM 2.0 but it also always has issues like it forces me to use skype or email won't open. I'm guessing it is because I load my old data from Titanium backup and it isn't compatible. I tried Mean ROM and it works and changes my kernel but I don't like it as it is full of Sprint Bloatware which does me no good on Boost. I've tried to load the latest Viper ICS ROM and it just stays stuck on the HTC screen.

I had a similar problem. I unlocked and rooted my EVO LTE ... Then I tried to install a custom ROM and it just got stuck at the boot animation. I didnt do a back up or anything so I was just stuck. I was able to get into Recovery. As a matter of fact I fixed it last night by loading up flashing that superwipe zip and flashing Stock with Goodies ROM. Now my EVO LTE works fine.

Hey there
I had the same problem, just when I loaded the goodies rom it crashed. Can't do anything, except boot into TWRP. Basically if I try to reflash a rom it should solve my problem?
Most likely you need to flash the kernel, use that image flash app or adb tools/android SDK to flash it in fastboot

Ok, can I use TWRP to flash the Kernel or is there an app or pc that ill have to use?
You can use fastboot to flash the kernel or the image flash app, I havent got a link for it right now but its probably in themes and apps or original development
No PC
I don't have a PC to use. I'm wondering if I could go recovery->advance->terminal command. I see a fast lot process, but requires a PC.
Not that I know of, you need access to fastboot
Dumlock?
Reading on dumlock, else return to project when computer is available. Thanks for the help.
You can't use dumlock without access to android
So it appears
*sigh* got all excited flashed a rom without a kernel, and now **** out of luck. Seemed so much easier for my OGEVO. So my only option is to do a fast boot with a PC using the .zip I have on the sdcard?

[Q] What did I do wrong? :(

So, a few minutes ago, I come to XDA and decided it was time for me to flash CyanogenMod onto my already rooted HTC Amaze 4g. I searched "How to install CM10 on Amaze 4g using TWRP 2.3.3.0" and found " genius-tips[dot]com/update-htc-amaze-4g-to-android-4-1-1-cm10-official-rom/ ", so I decided i was going to go try it anyway. I took a video of me doing it just in case I messed up (Glad I did).
Well, here's the video:

If anyone can help me install CM10 onto my Amaze 4g, please do. I also need someone to explain how I could go about restoring my phone (Sadly, I didn't backup my ****) to Stock. All, and any help is appreciated. I'm currently stuck in a boot loop
Sorry, but I can't post any links just yet
What OS were you using before you tried to flash CM10?
And are you S-Off?
And did you flash the boot.img?
The reason is...
1. You need to be on ICS Firmware first to flash anything ICS or higher
2. S-off allows you to flash the kernel at the same time after flashing.
3. If you're not s-off then flashing the kernel [boot.img] is necessary.

Then its because you are s-on. You need to ditch twrp and flash 4ext recovery, then enable smartflash in the settings in 4ext. Then flash the Rom. Use hasoon's toolkit to flash 4ext to your phone
