[Q] Quick thinking about GPS and maybe overheating fix? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I was driving the other day with TomTom Europe on and I know from my other android devices that driving with a GPS and screen on all the time makes the phone overheat.
So I thought turning the screen off and this actually worked the GPS kept running in the background and kept giving me navigation directions.
Without overheating the phone! This could be useful for alot of people here.
But now my question is is there some kind of app or tweak that makes the screen go on when you are entering an exit lets say about 300 metres.
So anyone know some kind of fix for this?
BTW if this is in the wrong topic please move this mods and sorry for that!

I'm using copilot and have the option "turn on screen when approaching turn". Nothing like that in tomtom?

[Q] Delayed wakeup upon unlock. 4.0.3

Yes, I have searched the forum but only found old posts, nothing pertaining to ICS about this.
I've had this problem since 2.3, and it's kinda annoying.
When I press the unlock button it takes around 2sec for the phone to wake-up.
I thought this was supposed to be fixed in the verisons after 2.3, and now I have 4.0.3 and it's still present.
Anyone else have this problem?
Is it a Google or Samsung problem. Can it be remedied?

dose it happens by pressing home button ?
Yup

Well if you want, you could stop your phone going into deep sleep and have less battery life

Nah, don't wanna clock it up.
But is this a common problem or just some unfortunate people that have it?

I have same problem with any stock or custom rom and is verry annoying.
It's normal. I use CM 9 and I'll hit the home button on my sleeping phone now...and it took around 1 second to wake up.
There isn't anything you can do about it.
As Riz said last month, would you rather your phone deep sleep & conserve battery when you're not using it & take a second to wake up or would you rather have a permanent wakelock & resultant battery drain in order to have it wake up in a few tenths of a second ?
I mean, we are talking about a second here. Not half a minute or something.
Yay! You got a new sig!
It always makes me wonder what people expect with these threads....it's like when you wake a pc up - it isn't instantaneous...and is a second really too long to wait?
Yeah I couldn't resist ;-)
Yep you're right. People do expect too much sometimes, as you said, how long does a PC take to wake up from hibernation ? Phone takes no time in comparison.

nobody who could help here?
Should work no problem. I wrote a couple tags and my buddy was able to read them on his locked GNex. Unless I totally misunderstood what your asking

hehe... yeah, it was possible before but i think they changed it starting with ICS, and thats the problem

Just 4.0.2 and earlier. I believe 4.0.4 is all gravy!

thx man, hmm... now that's weird, i'm on 4.0.4 (the omega rom) and with the S3 there is no chance to read a tag if the device is locked
can somebody confirm this? maybe i should consider a full wipe then

Well I'm unlocked so I can't confirm that its a lock issue It very well could be but I have no idea how that works. .. full wipes don't hurt. Just sucks setting everything up again is all.

I think op means when the screen lock is on.. Not rooting or sim locked
The phone wont read a tag until the phone is turned on and screen unlocked
I guess its to save power
Do you maybe have a lock pattern or something similar enabled, would make sense to me if it doesn't work with such a feature activated.
Because with the swype to unlock you are i.e. also able to pull notifications down while the screen is locked, with a security lock activated you aren't.

In my case I just have the swipe to unlock
But until unlocked you can not scan nfc

Thx guys for all your answers.
Of course the problem is the locked screen and not any sim lock.
I understand that it does kinda make sense not to accept NFC connections as long as the phone is locked. However, personally I would still prefer to use NFC also if the phone is locked (as it was possible before) - and i think I'm not alone with this.
Looks like you have to play around with your rom to get it working again - the sad part is, I have no clue where to start (well, actually I have no clue at all).

one more doubt with NFC unlock
I've one doubt regarding NFC screen unlock.. I'm worried that I'm giving more pressure to my Nexus S power button . Suppose if I can have a NFC tag which will simply light up the screen when placed on it, On my screen I can have pattern lock /password lock.. so it will be secured, I just want to bypass pressing Power button all the time to check what is happening inside my mobile ( with out rooting and key remap )
I understand why NFC is disabled when locked from a security perspective, especially with things like Google Wallet - someone could buy things with your phone without knowing the PIN.
However I am not using NFC payments and would really like to have the ability to switch profiles by NFC tags. The problem is the convenience of this is somewhat reduced by having to unlock the phone. If it could just be enabled when the screen is on that would not be so bad on the battery.
I know a few months back Paul O'Brien was talking about looking at a hack for this, I don't think he has yet (or will ever have the time). It is not on the new GNex MoDaCo kitchen (IR14). N.B. I did have a GNex before swapping for the wife's new S3
Take a look at the development section, there is already a solution for rooted phones.

true, the solution is only a few days old - but this was just an information for TwoGunTurtle and all the others in this thread, who have not yet seen the thread in the development section.
You are looking at about 5 milliamps when the NFC is ready to read.
Whilst it's a only a very small drain if you had it drawing that all the time, you may find your battery starts to suffer. That's about 400 Hours on the 2100 mAH battery, assuming nothing else is drawing power.
Although I worked it out at only an extra 9 ish hours off the standby time assuming the phone does 200 Hours in stanby @ 10.5mA + 5mA for the NFC chip = 11mA - 2100mAh / 11mA = 190.90 Hours
So not a great loss, but you also have security to think of I guess, if your phone is always able to communicate via NFC you open yourself up to fly-by attacks (not that this kind of thing happens....yet).

[Q] [XPERIA S] [G-Sensor] Too responsive

First of all, I'm sorry if the question is already on this forum, but search doesn't work, and with google i can't find anything similar here.
I think I have a problem with my XPS. The G-sensor is too sensitive.
Trying Google Skymap: it moves the image too quickly and it's a mess.
During a video: the image it's never stable. the stabilizer doesn't work (I heard a lot of that).
With Game "100 Floors", level 21: it's impossible to keep the phone steady to go further.
Is only a problem with my phone or something else has the same problem?
Could it be a software problem?

Could be a fault with your phone, though for the 100 floors game just place your phone on a flat table and that should work even if it is over sensitive
Thanks. 100 floors worked.
Can anyone try Google SkyMap with XPS? It's seems not usable for me!
Either Skymap is badly broken or every single Android Phone I had suffered same issue.. I stoped using Skymap.

i9300 Screen Problem (Washed out) every 2-3 days

Hi there,
Has anyone else had this issue, this seems to happen every 2-3 days, when i wake my phone up the screen looks really bright (and washed out) the phone itself works perfectly while the screen is like this, i have tried changing the screen brightness/auto brightness/screen mode etc but it dosnt fix it, the only way is to reboot, at the moment i am on Omega V37 (ELLC) but this has been happening for approx 3 weeks now (on all different omega versions) i have tried a full wipe and load ELLC via PC odin, then install omega again but still this problem occurs, any ideas?

I have had this problem occasionally,I just mess with the brightness settings and it seems to sort itself out, feels like a glitch in the light sensor software that occurs occasionally, not a biggy for me

yeah I've had this also - completely random - I found that just locking and unlocking the phone generally resolves the issue

Thanks for your replies! Good to know im not the only one! I always run manual screen brightness, 100% during the day and about half at night, Weird thing is about 4 of my friends have the same phone and i dont think they have experienced this fault, but then i am the one who flashes alot of different roms etc, would be nice to know what causes this!
I have the same problem.
Sometimes after playing a game the screen gets also a pink shine over the screen.
Only a reboot fix it.

How often is yours doing it? Mine needs a reboot to correct, seems to do it every 2-3 days.
Solution or at least step one in the logic sequence is wipe phone and factory reset and test .
Step two is flash stock rom and test . In both cases with no added apps .
jje
Sorry for the delayed update, I'm on vacation in Mexico . Well, the damn thing cannot be used anymore, the screen works intermitently, I managed to wipe the phone to no avail, so when I get home I`ll try to flash the stock ROM for Argentina and get it to service. BTW this is my second S3 maybe next time I'll get an iPhone. This s*cks!

Battery life issues

I have a Galaxy S3 gti9300 and since I got this thing it never seems to go into deep sleep. I have set all apps to never sync just as a test and it still chews on the battery. I rarely ever use it to make calls, maybe 30 minutes a day. In fact talking on the phone does not seem to drain the battery, it goes down with nothing happening. I have gmail installed and google calender, they only sync when I ask them too. Wifi is one, all other stuff is off. I got this thing new off Ebay from a China seller, it looked new when I got it. I question if it is really a 9300, when I installed CWM it showed as a i747 or something like that. What can I do to troubleshoot this down?
I also have a Jiayu g5 and the battery life on that thing is amazing, It can go 8 hours and only loose 5% battery when not in use. The problem with that phone is here in South Alabama I constantly lose single with my carrier (straight talk), I do not have that issue with the Galaxy.
Remove battery then you will see phone model

Likely to be a fake, take the back off and check the appearance against a genuine i9300.

The i747 is a totally different model, not what he bought. The thread you linked is irrelevant.
The Chinese seller on ebay is most likely to supply a fake, download a hardware sniffing app and check the specs.
