Ever since this has been an available option on any device I have used, I have ticked 'force GPU rendering' in developer options as it appears to make scrolling on the device smoother. I have done this without understanding the technical implications of doing so.
Could somebody kindly explain the pros and cons of implementing this and, if the general concensus is improvement in the operation of this device, why is the setting un-ticked by default?
ie. How is Mr. (or Mrs.) average user supposed to correctly set up his (or her) device for optimal performance without knowledge of such things.
Shouldn't the optimum performance of a device be automatically set up 'out of the box' ??
me too have the same question
I read somewhere that not all apps are compatible when force gpu rendering is turned on
So its not turned on by default.
Edit : i personally havent come across any apps which arent compatable

No, I haven't either.
Anybody have any examples?
By default only the apps that has a flag enabled in manifest file uses GPU rendering. Forcing the GPU rendering bypasses that flag check and renders the app via GPU.

It will be faster, but some apps might not work properly, force close or get glitches.
If you have no issues with any app you use, keep it on.

It saves the CPU from doing more work than needed, yet it causes most games to lag insanely.
It allows the CPU to run at lower frequencies, yet uses more battery, because the GPU is used more.
It makes UI-usage a lot less laggy, yet like I already said, it's only in the SystemUI..
And I have no other pros, only cons.
I prefer to have it off, saves me battery, I can play more graphic-intense games with a lot less lag.
Hope I could help!
LG familyguy59/Beatsleigher
Enabling this preference in developer options offloads task of rendering window components like buttons, text and complex 2d graphics calculations to GPU. This often results in much faster UI rendering including animations.
On one side you will definitely achieve better frame rate (and hence smooth experience) throughout system, but you may end up using more battery. On certain devices, GPU consumes more power the CPU, hence you may observe 5-15% lower battery life with option enabled.
I would recommend having this option enabled on devices with weaker CPUs e.g. You should seldom need to enable this on dual-core 1.4ghz ARM CPU.
offloading UI rendering to GPU has obvious benefits so that CPU can work on other important tasks like database IO, data manipulation, layout calculations and responding to other user inputs.

I'm not quite sure, but from the looks of it, it MAY be good for gaming. Just like what taranfx said, what this option does is put the workload of the UI and the graphics on the GPU so that the CPU has less of the workload. Again, this isn't really necessary for smartphones with dual-core processors. However, I think that enabling this option consumes more battery and RAM.
Where do I find the Force GPU Rendering setting in 4.3?
Where does one find this setting in Android 4.3? I know I've seen it before on my previous phone, but it was an older version of Android - 4.3 has split up the settings over 4 tabs...I've searched everywhere and can't find it....oh...I'm using a Note 3 - I realize it's not what this forum is about, but this thread is discussing the Forced GPU setting, which I may need to change on my device.
Thanks.

Hello guys.
I just see it on a french Archos Forum, there's a new Firmware released for Gen8 Devices.
Download it from Archos Website
What's new :
Version 2.0.71 - December 16th, 2010
* Wi-Fi: fix Wi-Fi stuck after a while when using WPA2/AES encryption mode
* Wi-Fi: fix cannot connect on channels above 11 due to wrong default regulation domain
* Power management: for A43/A70/A101 add a setting in about device to allow 3 levels of power management. Overdrive that allows CPU max frequency to be 1GHz with ondemand governor, optimal that brings CPU max frequency to 800MHz with ondemand governor and powersave that set CPU max frequency to 800MHz with conservative governor
* Indexing: faster rescan is now achieved at USB disconnect
* Storage: SDCard now supports NTFS (read only) and EXT3
* Storage: fix sdcard not recognized sometimes when swapping different cards brands
* Video: fix subtitles on A101
* Network shares: enhance scanning speed
* Network shares: handle the case where a server shares are not visible if not authenticated
* Network shares: allow in wireless settings to define manually a server authentication details
* Network shares: reload samba and UPnP services when switching between access points without disconnecting
* Audio: a silent mode (Global Mute) has been enabled in the power button menu. It will impact all streams except alarms in case one select alarms sound always on in alarm settings
* Application: appslib is now reinstalled after an Android device reset
* Application: fix quadrant CPU benchmark
* Power: fix shutdown sometimes happening on short power button press
* Internationalization: support for Korean codepage tags and subtitles
* Multimedia: use smaller memory footprint for decoding H264 SD
* Memory management: achieve more progressive kill in low memory situation
* Boot: fix deadlock happening sometimes preventing device to complete boot
As I see on some forums, there's a good feedback about this update
Have a good flash
Nice. Faster rescan, memory management, wifi fixes, power fix, 1000MHz back, and other fixes. That'll fix quite a lot of issues.
I have to raise my eyebrow on the 'fix quadrant CPU benchmark' though... That sounds like optimizing for a benchmark app, which ruin the entire purpose of benchmarking... @[email protected]
edit: Oh hey, it's posted already at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875393
Oh sorry for the double post...
Archie defanitly got the update right. The course and memory settings make it much better.
Makes a bunch of apps in the market disappear again. I'm pulling my hair out.
I did a complete format and installed the market and everything is working fine. Same number of apps as before the update. Try a full reformat by shutting down and booting up by pressing volume down and power.
Edit: love the new update. Feels much faster. Good job archos.

Market working here
It's better with this update, but it's still not enough by a long shot. This Archos desperately needs a lagfix solution like on the Samsung Galaxy, this way its no contender for the iPad.
the gen8 archos doesn't have etf or do i miss something?
so a lag fix (at least like that on sgs wouldn't help or do i miss smth) i am very happy with the performance it's not as fast as the sgs newest software + lagfix but it's quite fast but i haven't installed a lot of software perhaps it will get worser

It would never be a contender. I have never understood comparing everything to Apple. They make good items for there system. This is Android and not the same system. Let this stand on it own merits. Just a thought these days.
Now lets compare it to the SGT. That is a over priced tablet but has Market access and root access. I hope we can get to the point with this software.
So on that note I have not changed to the new software since we lose all root. So i have not seen the grand changes that people are happy about.
Faldiin
When they're of similar function, there's no reason not to compare them. That's the only way we can decide what to buy in the list of available tablets.
That said, I'm not fond of apple products. They're 'locked down tight' (ignoring jailbreaking) and highly priced.
And same I've not switched to the new software since I do not want to lose root. It works well enough as it is as long as I have root.

As I see the point to your thought, I may not agree since there is to much going on about IPad killer and IPhone Killer. This is why I find this part getting annoying. So there is plenty of merit to what you say. As far as the apple I completely agree. I was trying to talk my sister out of an IPad. Worst of it she has a droid Incredible and she is still opting for the IPad. Some people are just paying for the software and have no idea.

hi,
since I cannot post in the developers section, I'll do it here:
would it be possible without much effort to create a little hack, which disables androids "pixelation" while using the internet browser?
obviously android reduces graphics quality while scrolling to ensure a smoother performance, but is this really needed on this dual core phone? it seems outdated and looks ugly
thx for opinions ...
That pixelation you see is due to a gpu accelerated browser, nothing you can do to disable it. Try a different browser, i suggest opera mobile.

Hi all,
I'm wonsering if true multitasking is possible...
I have been using the sgs2 for a few days now.and its.my first android.phone.
Im very happy with it but jus missing one feature...
When Im watching video in a browser or app Id like to be able to quickly do something else while the.audio keeps.playing.
Is this possible?
I do know that some apps have this featur (audio players etc.)
But id like to do this with the browser or cnn app
Greetings, dutchy
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I'm not sure if it would be possible, although the video is kept in memory, it has to close in order to open another app, I don't think you could have audio playing in background during a different application. My thought, though I'm still kinda n00b-ish with Android myself.
@SgtDutchyNL
It's possible for sure, but browsers intentionally pauses/stops playback when they're "minimized", because this is what most people want in most cases. I don't know any browser app which does run flash content in the background.
Shame there isnt an option for it, maybe its possible by editing some code?

Coming from a Palm Pre (WebOS) I really hate multi-tasking on Android devices, switching from app to app sometimes doesn't even let you carry on where you started.

Really, I've never had an issue switching between browser, sms, email, contacts and maps, all whilst listening to music.
As for video in the browser, Flash has been built to only run whilst in focus to stop the battery from draining when animation is running in a tab in the background.
To help the issue of multitasking, try installing wavelauncher on market. it is exactly like the wave launcher in webos. but it still wont fix the fact that android will close your program in the background when it needs more memory (which is why you have to restart from scratch when you "alt-tab" around)
I have a Palm Pixi Plus which I use for work email. No doubt WebOS is amazing when it comes to multi tasking, their ecosystem(h/w and s/w) should mature but I doubt if it can reach anywhere near Android. For that matter I doubt if M$ or RIM or Intel can ever achieve this.
I've been using Android for the past 2+ yrs. I must admit Android's muti tasking is rubbish. All we need is a simple button X (similar to Windows PC) to close any damn app than closing/killing in a different way in each app/phone. Its confusing at times. Good thing is Galaxy S II is a very good phone. A complete package must say..
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
You guys misunderstood, i dont hate android's multitasking, in my opinion it doesnt match that of webOS as that was the mobile os where true multitasking was derived from. As gd as the android operating system is, Galaxy s2 is making me like android more.

I've also noticed the problem when using sites like mega upload where you have to wait a certain amount of time before downoading a file. If the counter is on 30 seconds, I think I have time to check an e-mail or a few tweets while waiting, so I do that and when I come back to the browser the counter is still at 30 seconds...
It's usually not a big deal but I find it amusing that android fanboys made fun of iOS because it doesn't have true multitasking, although from what I can see android just saves the state of your apps and restores it when you go back to the app... it's OK in most situation but it's hardly multitasking.

No, Android has true multitasking, but that doesn't mean every app should or have to use it, does it? If I browse through internet, I'm on a site with dynamic Flash/Javascript content and I exit browser then I want it to freeze any dynamic content to minimize power consumption. This is exactly what most of people want in most situations and this is why you have problems with Megaupload. It's possible to create a browser which will run Megaupload counter in the background, but no one has created one so far, because it wouldn't be that good.
You all should understand this isn't a technical issue, it's a design concern. If you switch/exit an app then OS (no matter: mobile or desktop one) has to do one of the following:
run it normally in the background
pause it
close it
give user a choice
Each of above has its pros and cons. Desktop OSes use first option, because they don't care about power and RAM consumption. They also use last option, because on a big screen, with mouse and full keyboard there is no problem to add such controls.
But using same solution on a phone would be a disaster, I think. Older mobile OSes use third option: they close app after exiting it, they don't have MT at all. iOS is somewhere between pause and close. Android is between pause and run: it pauses apps by default, but gives them a possibility to run in the background if they want. And this is a big difference between iOS and Android. On the iOS app can't run in the background even if both its developer and user want that. On the Android it depends fully on a developer choice.
What I want to say is: there is no single, perfect solution to this problem. If clicking "home" button would not pause an app by default then OS would be a piece of **** to me. Even if it would give me a possibility to easily pause/close an app - still POS. Pause should be a default action to make OS easy to use, so I think Android design is really good. One thing which could be done is to give more control to user. E.g. an option to resume/not pause an app on demand, so it will run similarly to foreground mode.
And how does work this awesome MT of webos (I don't really know)? Please, don't say it runs apps in the background by default - if so then sorry, but as I said it's a POS to me.

Thanx for this very informative post.
And indeed I think the best solution would be for each app to have a default behavior as it is right now, but let the user force the app to keep running at all times if they need to for some reason and don't care about the performance hit.

Intresting to me that good old WM 6.5 was true multitasking and could run for the best part of a week in standby Android in all it's forms, with background program managment, can barely do a couple of days !
Interesting in the video that I didn't see any evidence of true multitasking
Like some1 mentioned already, android is a multiple task/thread OS. So you can pretty much do anything. It's down to the developer. If you wanted music/vid to play in the background when not active in foreground tis easy to extend your application to have a service that constantly runs, and the app (UI) is just the controller. A good example of multitasking is seeing 2 things update where both are either critical data or processor intense. An example being your widgets update while live wallpaper is doing something. So to me, there is either multitasking or not, not really true multitasking. I think from the video of webOs I would call it a task/app/thread visual controller, and not a few words like "true multitasking".
Just my brain dumb on the issue
Hi everyone. Im one of the developers of SwitchMe, and app that allows multiple secure logins into separate installations of android on a single device. The pr is after the break.
I really need a few people to check into some issues people on the streak have been experiencing. There are some warnings involved:
- testers must perform a full nandroid backup before using the app, it is not our responsibility if you start getting boot loops or whatever
- if you report results or bugs, please use the "Write to us" function in the app whenever possible, and always describe the issue in the header of the logs you send
- if you post here, bes sure to include your device type and rom
- if you have apps installed on sd, be sure to mention that as well
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SwitchMe is a unique application for root users that allows you to log in and out of multiple installations of Android just as you would on a desktop computer.
The technology behind SwitchMe saves all of your applications and data, protects it and stores it as a file in memory. You can then log out of an
account and log into a fresh installation of Android or another account with its own unique content.
You may create as many profiles as the memory is capable of holding. Some of these may require very little free memory because they contain few apps,
others will be larger as they contain many applications and lots of cache and data.
Why is this functionality useful?
Privacy - the most obvious benefit is that you can securely share one device among multiple users, which gives you privacy and peace of mind.
Testing - if you are a developer, you can use profiles as clean sandboxes to test your applications and their interaction with the system.
Gaming – with multiple installations of Android on a single device, you can now play online MMOs as different characters.
Speed - the games your kids play slow down your tablet, but with SwitchMe you can easily create profiles without games or instant messengers.
Battery life - when the battery is low but there are important emails or documents to edit later, switch to a profile which only contains these essentials.
These of course are only suggestions - there are plenty of other uses for the functionality SwitchMe offers.
Market link:
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.switchme
The Lite version allows the creation of two profiles, enough to test on.
Screens:
like multiple OS on computer?
wow... awesome! i will stand here to wait

UM can't you any feedback if you can't get it to run on our devices... like I said in an earlier post, it won't run on my Streak 5. That's with it running even stock Froyo which I flashed because of my interest in your app. Not will it run on a stock Gingerbread ROM on my Streak 5.

Not working for me either
Does your device have any non-froyo roms?

For a "developer" you sure ain't much at reading your own thread fella.
As I stated in my earlier post, I tried your app with the stock and custom GINGERBREAD ROMs for the Streak, it STILL did not work.
Goodbye...

Personaly i know that you need at least 2gb of RAM to run this app
Best regards
Well you are right about that, but im asking if there is a way to run it with low end phone with kitkat and maybe somehow reduce the ram usage so it can launch correctly not crash
EDIT: guys i actually found a good settings for gl tools to launch the game try you guys too, this may help the crash
P.S. idk xda app doesnt let me to upload screenshots so i will type all of this (oh boy this will be long :c)
Disable anti alliasing
Force 16 bit rendering
Optimize glsl shaders
Enable texture decompression-all
Enable texture recompression-all
Downscale textures-0.5x
Enable simple mapbuffer emulation
Enable use packed stencil buffer
Enable fix fbo attachment sizes
Enable decode sRGB
Enable Lower depth buffer size limits
Thats it! You can thank me later and tell if you still have problems
I again forgot to mention, dont worry about the long loading and it might crash the first time like i got when i tried to enable gps, but i rebooted the phone and wolla!
Doesnt recompression actually take more CPU? Because it has to compress graphics.
Might be better for RAM but worse for CPU.
Please correct me.
Well yes and no. You see pokemon go has a big requirement to run the game, and you also need more ram to just open the game. So the only option here is to use the recompression that will free more ram to launch the game, but the only thing i need to solve is how to fix the lag for now :/
