[q] video player using 96.7% of cpu!!! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So today i woke up at 6:40am just to find out my S3 was on fire!! Not quite literally but it was the hottest it has ever been!! So after my mini heart attack I take the battery off let it cool down, let it power itself on, just to find out on whatchdog that there was an alert at midnight (while it was suppost to be idle) of the video player using 96.7% of the cpu. I'm really worried about this! All my video files are .mp4 and .wmv. Could the reason for this be a corrupt file? And I'm saying that because yesterday I had multimedia on my battery app first and did a lot of research for it to find out there could be corrupt files on my phone but come on I have thousands of thing and not planing to take them out and in again. But I also noticed whatchdog gave me alerts with multimedia manager and video player so I suppose it has something to do with it. Does someone actually know about this or has any idea?
By the way the multimedia drain stopped after I stopped the media manager from starting at boot with an app from the play store.
Additional info: Running Jelly Bean with Android Revolution HD 11.3 and Phenomenal kernel 4.0 medium.

[Q] Very high battery usage of all music players under CM7

Hello
I have searched a log but i didn't found a solution.
If i use my SGS2 with CM7 (tried last stable and nightly) i have the following issue:
Normally my phone takes around 1% battery/hour. (if i dont use it, like over the night)
If i start a music player, not important if native music app or winamp, the battery usage goes up to ~5% even if the player don't play music.
So if i like to listen to an audio book and fall asleep, the battery run out of power over the night. (depends on how long i sleep )
Could it depends on the SD Card?
Did you wipe data before installing??
Sent from my GT-I9100 powered by CheckRom™
yes i did.
But i have not done the CM7 SD Fix.
I will try it at the WE.
Maybe i will also try a new Wipe.
this is happening across multiple devices for me - my galaxy tab 10.1, my gt 8.9, droid charge, epic touch 4g... something in just about every music player won't let my devices sleep and drains the battery fast as heck.

[Q] Two Major Problems with the S3 (Help)

Ok so I've had the S3 since yesterday and needless to say its a pretty incredible piece of kit.
However I've encountered two problems I can't get around;
1. I can't seem to get my music player onto the lock screen to easily change track, I've tried a variety of players but none seem to take over the lock screen no matter what settings are used? Anyone know a fix?
2. Whenever I use the internet on my phone using desktop mode or any internet browser, when trying to watch videos other than on Youtube I always get the "You need Flash" instead of the video, I never had this problem on my Note...
Are there any quick fixes to this? I don't want to root my device...
For 2) it's probably a case of you needing to go the Play Store and downloading Adobe Flash
Sent from my CM9 TouchPad
Haha
I would have thought by the fact i'd posted here it would have been assumed Id already downloaded Flash .
I have Adobe Flash Player 11 with the fix for ICS, however playing videos I could on my Note just isn't happening on the S3 and i'm not sure why!

If there are videos with commercials, it can be that the popup blocker of the browser blocks them.
It happened to me too just because the website I tried, needed to have the commercials downloaded first before it could start the playback.
Are you using the same browser on both phones?
About the first problem it works ok for me so i really dont know. (stock music player)
the above two problems are not major!! i will tell you a major problem and that is an auto focus issue while recording video looses its focus and moves too and fro awkwardly video help help!
I have the same problem as number 1: The stock music player on the galaxy s3 does not appear to have any control on the lockscreen. It's strange because on my Galaxy S it works perfectly.. Anybody have ideas on how to resolve the issue, without going to 3rd party apps/widgets?
It's annoying but at least you can pull down the notification bar and get it there.
Also the headphones do volume but not tracks... F'n annoying.
I find the music player a bit ****, wish I had access to Google Play Music from 4.0.
The only way is pull down the notification bar

In order for you to play the videos using the browser, you need to switch back to android mode(phone mode), the flash player, especially the adobe one, do not support desktop mode.
To sort it, you need a flash player that supports desktop mode which i don't know if there is already existing app like that.
So, there is no way to get it working properly, only notification bar? That's weak..
Btw. I have also problems with flash. Youtube works fine but sometimes it just keeps loading and doesn't play ( from the internet browser). What's the deal with all these issues, I thought SG3 will be flawless..
I wanted to follow up on this, I find the music player extremely annoying. The headphones not changing track I can live with for the time being.
Any solution on how to access the on screen music player besides the notification bar from the lock screen?

[Q] Playing music is taking too much power?

Coming from iPhone, i was used to play music without any noticeable battery drain for long time. I mean, while on aiplane mode, phone used about 10% of battery to play music for 6-7 hours (during long flights). Now I play music with Google Play Music using my regular IEM phones (Xears Maestro MH700PRO) on HOX+ and it takes about 2-3% for 30 minutes of music, tested on my trip from home to work. And it seems to me bit too much.
I checked battery stats and found out that most juice is used by Mediaserver app. From searching around I found out that this process is handling playing media, but also scanning storage for media files. And it sometimes gets stuck in infinite loop from some messed files. So I used some NoMedia app to create .nomedia files in every folder of my virtual SD card to avoid Mediaserver scanning, since Google Play Music uses system Data folder to store its cached files. And it also has .nomedia files in its folders.
Problem is, that nothing changed, Mediaserver process is still on the top of power usage while playing music and phone still uses too much power to play simple MP3 music. Any ideas how to solve this?
More digging brought more info - used simple CPU Spy app to monitor which states are used while playing music in period of 30 minutes. And result is interesting - most used state is 760MHz with 21:33 and second is 640 MHz with 9:55. Unfortunately app doesn't show how many cores were active during that time, but even assuming it was only one, its still bit too much for playing simple MP3. Or is it normal with Android devices?
Try Media ReScan Root - if you are rooted It should stop scan your mediafiles without having to create .nomedia files...
Pls report back, I too have the feeling that this task uses a bit too much... not a problem, but could be better...
Have root, Media Scan Root (app has different name after install than on play store) installed and active, CPUstate reset and running music test again. Its quite annoying to see how much power phone uses to play music, simple MP3 player costing few bucks have like 1000% better power usage than phone in this price range. Wonder if there is some specialized player, maybe requiring root rights, but able to significantly lower CPU speed to save battery...
EDIT results are same, most used states are 760 and 640 MHz, most battery drain goes to Mediaserver with 45%, 20% goes to Google Play Music. 30 minutes took 3% of charge.

It's the same as running a V8 while not driving, you will use more gas than with a v4 doing the same
Hmm, nice theory, but when apple can do it with their hw, android should too...

I wouldn't say that, i say you have installed a power hungry app!!! I just used the stock Music player at the gym for 2hrs straight and guess what? I walked into the gym with 73% battery and walked out of the gym with 73% battery, did not use a stitch of battery. Coming from an iphone 4 and always using it for the gym (which i still do cus this stupid phone doesn't offer wired headset controls yet!!!) i'd say this device gets just as good if not slightly better battery while ONLY listening to music. Now if you are using third party apps, streaming music, blah blah blah, well duh you're going to use up battery. Common sense there. If solely only using the Stock Music Player to listen to music SAVED on your phone, you will not see much of any battery consumption. Actually very impressed myself!
This was also before i rooted and was using the stock rom/device. Now i'm rooted and running a custom rom, battery is even better across the board!!!

For starters your comparing a 1.5ghz dual core iphone 5 with a 1.7ghz quad core, secondly 3% for listening to half an hours music is good. What planet are you from? Either buy an ipod or a less powerfull phone. You chose to buy the most powerfull phone on the market. No one made you, now you have to live with the limitations that brings

Screen mirroring bugs

2 days ago, or so, my screen mirroring was working well (yeah, it lags a lot, but we're talking about a Xperia M4). Today I had to study, the presentations that I needed to read were on the device, so I decided to use the screen mirroring and put some music to study...here starts the problem. When I opened the music app, it worked well for less than 2 seconds...then the phone got....damaged? I dunno. The thing is, if I open the music app, I get stuck on the screen mirroring (Yes, nor the screen mirroring, nor the phone can be turned off, just using the little button on the SD card slot). Also this will bug the phone completely, making it act like it had around 10mb free ram (And it has 40% free ram, so, it's just the phone acting weird). CPU usage is also normal, half of the cores arround 300-900mhz, half arround 1000mhz. Help me please, what can be doing this? I thought it was an app that changes navbar color, but I uninstalled it and the problem remains. Also the music app is factory restored. Oh, and in case you're wondering, the phone is NOT rooted.
Also, if you could help me remove the album app, it'd be great (I want to replace it with the Jellybean model, since I use MX player, also, Jellybean's version is way more beautiful and clean).
Nevermind.

So, while I was writing this message and searching for solutions on the web, I left the phone, mirroring its screen and DOING NOTHING, and PHONE DISCONNECTED showed on the TV. Then I discovered that it was due to a senseless reboot on the phone... And it fixed it! Actually, screen mirroring works better than never.

LGV30+ video playback problem

I'm looking for a solution for a video playback problem my LG-H930DS (SEA) has after the 8.0 Oreo update. When I start the phone everything is working well, but after a few minutes of normal usage the built-in videoplayer cannot play video recordings made by the phone itself. It says "Cannot play video - This file type is not supported" Then I have to restart the phone to get it working again. But it fails nearly every day. I wouldn't mind this failing because I can choose a different app to play the gallery videos, but the problem is that Snap-chat videos fail to play as well when this happens, until next restart. That's the bug I cannot have. Also when the phone gets into the state of not playing videos, the ringtones and alarm clock make no sound.
To start the problem I only have to open a few random web pages in chrome, open the gallery a few times, play some videos , and in a few minutes of this usage video playback crashes. MX player, VLC and youtube still work though.
I have done a lot of troubleshooting for this problem:
Full restore of the phone
Flashed different firmwares, H930DS20b, H930DS20d, and the european variant H93020d
Tried with no apps installed, other then preinstalled ones
Tried it in safe mode
But the problem always remains.
I always use the same google account. And after upgrading to 8.0 the problem does not seem to start until I restart the phone for the first time, after that it's constantly failing. Don't know if it starts when the memory gets close to full or not, but nothing else is failing on the phone.
I have now downgraded my phone to the Android Nougat 7.1.2 (H930DS10d) and this problem is not there, no matter how hard I try to replicate it.
I can only find one link on google where this problem is reported. (problem #6)
I have contacted LG Support, and they had never heard about this, and wanted me to send my phone in for repairs. But I'm not willing to pay for shipping from Europe to Asia, if this is just a software problem.
Is someone else getting this problem, or does know a fix or a workaround for it? Or is there a way for me to view the errors the phone is running into?
Sorry for the long post, hope someone is willing to read it and give me a little help
I finally found out what the problem is. It's actually just media files in the storage I use every day. These files only contain audio, but have the extension .ts. Video playback on the phone fails because the gallery is trying to create thumbnails of them to display. The workaround for the problem was to place a .nomedia file in the folder containing those files, to hide them from the gallery. After that the problem stopped. I've been using these files for years, and it has never been a problem until Android 8.
have you tried some other video player?
stock one is quite basic and thin.
Hi, yes I do use another players, but the gallery is failing video plaback in snapchat and stopping ringtones and alarms from working aswell, without using the stock player.
Same problem here with LG V30
I have the same problem with my phone I have the T-Mobile V30 and I have the same issue. I figured out not to take videos in 4k [email protected] works fine. But the moment I create a video at 4k it either starts playing and stops midway with sound continuing to play with frozen picture or it just says it doesn't support the video.
I've been using LG phones ever since the G2 and never had any other phone or any problems with them. This one though is getting really annoying.
I hate these Q&A format threads with a passion. I wish people would just open regular threads...

Have you tried other video players like VLC, MXPlayer?
Yes sir I did many players and VLC is always on all my devices and it also gets stuck. I'll try the .nomedia file and see how that works
And I have a problem with the smoothness of video playback in gallery, whether it's a bluray movie in mp4/mkv FHD format, or from camera in FHD or in 4k is always on Android 8.0 I have a delicate jam, how would he lose single frames every 0.7sec ~ 0 , 25sec. I came back for testing on 7.1.2 and it is perfectly smooth always, as soon as I updated to 8.0 version 20d or the latest 21h there are jam ... how b was an oreo error, quite a few friends did not catch up with this problem, I'm a perfectionist and I look at every detail whether it's a video or sound, that's why I chose the highest model of the phone.
LG releases more patches (already 4) and as soon as it appears oreo are staples. You can see that this is a pfroblem with support for video caps because MX Player also has micro jams on the hardware codec.
Interestingly, youtube is fluid.
I only hope that the Android Pie will be improved.
I'm having the same problem as well please let me know when you will find the solution to this problem of smoothness of video
At first it was running smooth AF but after some time i noticed the problem after 1 day of use.
Reseting the phone didnt work.
