[Q] Samsung camera or AOSP camera? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm constantly reflashing between CM10 rom (PA) and a stock rom (Omega) and can't decide which one has a better camera app. this is very important for me.
Also, I've seen the two 'upgrades' :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1691145
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746611
and tried them, and still can't see a clear answer on which camera takes the best pictures. Can you help me with it?

Quality relies on drivers

Obviously the stock camera is better... I can clearly see that when opening the photos on PC...
But... If you can't see the difference between then, it means that it doesn't matter much, the difference is too insignificant for normal people to notice

no question when it comes to camera, its samsung

In my opinion its the stock camera

And does the 'note 2' patch makes the camera better or just 'different'?

dual boot is the solution to having the best of both worlds, granted it takes 45 seconds to reboot from 1 Rom to the other but it is essentially THE solution if you find yourself torn!

True, Samsung camera it's a beast but dualbooting allow you to have both sides: stability of stock Rom and awesome speed of aosp

[Q] Will installing a custom rom affect the quality of pictures/video recordings?

So, I'm thinking about rooting and installing a custom rom on my European Samsung Galaxy S II. But I've had some previous experiences regarding custom roms on my HTC Desire, whereas the quality of the still pictures and video recordings shot with the camera was drastically decreased. Still pictures looked horrible, and it was not possible to record video in 720 due to a huge amount of lag and stutter. This was the case with the three roms I flashed the HTC Desire with.
I'm not really educated on this subject, so I hope you guys can give me some information.
Will installing a custom rom affect the quality of still pictures/video recordings?
If so, what is the reason for this?

That doesn't happen on samsung phones at all, must be an htc thing.
If you care that much about camera quality, stick with Touchwiz ROMs. Flashing CM7 or MIUI will decrease the picture and video quality as they use AOSP apps which are worse than Samsung ones.
If you install a custom Samsung rom you should be fine but if you install cm7 or miui I've noticed the quality ain't as high

Okay, thanks. What is the reason for the decrease of quality?

I've used both cm7 and miui and both cameras are noticeably poorer than stock. I may be wrong but may be due to drivers or something as they are aosp based roms. But don't go by my word on reasoning. The pictures look fine on the phone but once you view them on a bigger screen you see the differences in quality.
When I get time I want to test various camera apps and compare them to stock using same conditions, don't think we have a thread like that.

Yeah, okay. I've been looking for threads like that, but I haven't found any. If you decide to go through with it, send me a PM with a link to the thread

Sorry but the original galaxy s2 touchwiz camera app relies on Samsung app framework (and a load more other complicated things I wont go into), therefore it can't and can never will be able to work on an AOSP rom like cm9. In other words, it's not possible. I hope this helps you
shame
That's crap.
Thanks for the reply though. The stock camera was the best. Could you recommend a similar app ? Tried camerazoom and its rubbish.
Need a high quality fast camera.
Currently using ifs camera + and its good but focus Is rubbish.
Loving cm9 though )))))))
typo
I meant isc camera + silly me
my phone won't spell ICS.

I am surprised why CM9 camera is so big **** compared to the stock :O

[Q] CAMERA shutter speed

I am just wondering, is the shutter speed of the camera software based or hardware based... just seen how fast the galaxy sIII camera shutter is and even that of the google nexus compared to the one EVO3D have... hope its a software base... so that at least there is a chance brilliant devs can include it in their custom ROMS...
been asking this for sometime now... but not getting any answer so far..
+1 to this.

I remember reading some time ago that Chad was working on adding zero shutter lag to the 3d through his kernel, but it would break the 3d capabilities of the camera. It did not happen afaik, but I am not sure if it was because it ended up not being possible due to hardware or what.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
I don't use 3D that much so zero lag on 2D would be nice.
im pretty sure its hardware, but i dont know, in the recent ICS leak, the roms that have been coming out have been outstanding but it seems the shutter lag has gotten slower then the GB bulid roms. it could just be me though.
have that feeling too.. but cant try the gb stock rom now... just dont want to go backwards...

Same here, since I went to MeanROM ICS my battery has been burning faster, but the user interface of ICS is worth it... not to mention the facial recognition lock screen? oh yeah...
There's a camera app called Fast Burst Camera that you guys could try, there's a feature limited free version, and a pay version, i was looking forward to chad's zsl... but anyways, i like the results of the lite version but only been using it for 2 days, i read somewhere that the app actually records a video and then give you the frames. Am planning on upgrading my phone so am not paying for the app. Anyways give it a try...let us know how was your exp. with the app...

yup, just tried it and it works... the pix is not as nice as the one taken from mwakious cam mod though..... hey wait,,, if this app can force our camera to shoot at that speed... then there is a great possibility smart devs can do something about this with the stock camera apps....???????????????????
also, it will force open the stock cam apps if you press the shutter for the continuos shots...

How is the quality? Since video tends to be recorded at a lower resolution that still pictures, I would think that would reduce quality by doing it this way.

[Q] camera quality tw vs aosp

Ok so a couple of things.
I noticed any camera app on a TW rom has what I would describe as graining, I can see pixels constantly changing colour akin to watching a analolue tv signal. If I take photos this affects the photo also. It affects how clear the photo is, I have a photo of an object on my desk eg. that looks brilliant taken whilst was on AOKP. Will try to attach the photos to this post. On the camera on the AOKP rom, this graining is gone, its vanished. (shame the camera app is unstable). Taking a photo of the same object using any camera app on a TW rom has a much less satisfying result. It would seem whatever that driver is thats used on AOSP roms it does offer better quality. Or is it a setting that causes the graining?
Also a few times when usng the camera, it just closes itself, if I am right this is a rom problem? what would cause that behaviour usually? The closing itself only is happening since I switched back to neatrom, so may end up posting this 2nd question in the neatrom thread.

a update
I took a photo at lower res (as was too big) and then accidently seen all the graining was gone and picture clear again.
so it seems lowering the resolution of the photo does wonders.
so its related to higher pixel count and it appears, obviously one might say the lower resolution hides the problem, possibly. so eg. zooming on on a my 0.8mp 1024x768 picture so its same screen size as the 8mp pic has much higher detail.
I will if time restore my aokp nandroid and test 8pm photos again if I can.
I attached 2 pics, the usb_back is 8mp other is 0.9mp.
I've never seen what you refer to. Generally the tw camera is better quality because samsung didn't release their camera HAL source so its quality can't be reproduced

I put AOKP back on for more testing, showed some freinds and they picked out all AOKP pics as clearly better, extra options in the app (jpeg quality and more focus options as well as special affects) and the quality is simply better full stop.
the TW cam got ported for AOSP anyway.
so just flash the TW cam and u got the same quality. (theme / addons section in this forum)

This is on your device. Maybe you have a problem with your camera when on touchwiz.

where is it? and i want aosp on tw not other way round the tw camera gui is aweful so even if quality fixed i wouldnt like using it.
i brought a professional camera app which a few on here reccomended, great improvement over tW interface but imo not as good as AOSP interface and it closes by itself a lot. It also doesnt fix the quality issue and when I run the app on AOSP the quality is fixed so the quality seems related to the samsung camera driver not app.

well I will try a diff TW rom, maybe even restore the rom that shipped with the phone to see if its a rom issue.

Could even be camera firmware/driver issue.
my opinion , both are same

since they part of the rom/kernel thats why I said I would try different rom.
I will also try a different kernel on same TW rom.

Yep. Im happier with aosp roms too

since I put siyah kernel on the AOKP rom the camera is stable. Might be coincidence but thats the situation at the moment.
well now nothing to fix on the quality.
on the latest 4.1.2 neatrom, the camera quality is good so was an issue with md4 build I guess.

Stock Samsung ROM Camera vs AOSP

Hey guys, I was wondering, how do you compare stock camera vs camera on AOPS (eg: cyanogemmod).
People say that it is way better on stock roms, why? I have a question, if it is better is it only because of the camera APP? So that flashing stock camera app on cyanogem or just using camera zoom fx would take AOSP to Stock level?
thx

No. The problem is with the drivers as far as I understand. The camera in AOSP will never be as good as stock. You can not interchange the camera apps between AOSP ans Samsung base due to different frameworks. You can use 3rd party camera apps for more functionality but it will not solve the basic camera bugs...or picture quality.

Much more better

As mentioned previously, the stock camera app will always be better.
Its on you whether you bare with tw but a better camera or go aosp
Yes, stock camera is better... Does that mean AOSP camera is crap? Absolutely not!
AOSP camera suits the needs of the causal shooter pretty well... If you need something more professional you shouldn't be using a phone camera anyway.
TW camera was what kept me from switching to AOSP for a long time, so I decided to make a few tests with a friend, we took the same pics (him with AOSP and me with TW) and compared the results (unfortunately i can't post those comparison pics as i don't have them anymore).
We couldn't find any big differences, and the few we found weren't that important for me.
3rd party apps can produce nice results also, my current camera of choice is A Better Camera, the interface is a bit outdated but I am happy with the quality and features. AOSP is so much better than TW in so many ways that it compensates for the "lesser" quality in the pics.
But don't let me or anyone else tell you what to use, try it for yourself.
As jmvelazquezr, I did the same test a few days ago and the difference is minimal.
The main problem with AOSP camera right now, is that it's buggy (problems with flash and focus). Video recording seems to offer lower quality too, specially the sound.
