error while restoring /system - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hy i make nandroid backup of stock 4.1.1 rom and than install omega rom, and when i want to restore that it says:error while restoring /system!
so can someone help me*!*

Im new to rooting so dont take my word as gospel,
but the EXACTLY THE SAME thing happened to me in the wee hours of this morning (my post would have been same wording as yorus had I made one lol), I had to do a battery pull as after I tried to reboot and got stuck on the bootloader
So I battery pulled, booted in recovert, did a factory reset, wiped cache, wiped delvik cache and just installed the ROM file from the ZIP again and it worked Dandy.
I was worried as I didnt bother asking for any help from the forums.. but it worked like a charm for me
I do hope that helps..

[Q] E: can't mount /cache error...last resort: SOLVED

I have spend over 4 hours browsing threads on this topic, and nothing has worked so far...so starting this thread is my last resort. I apologize for the lengthy description, but I want to make sure I don't leave out any details. Thanks in advance.
Issue: In short, my cache partition is corrupted. I was running the stock (rooted) Telus rom and everything was great. I did a nandroid backup. I then flashed the CM9-UNOFFICIAL-Kang h0tw1r3 Release 8 (6/25) rom, and it worked great, however there were things I didn't like about it so I flashed back to my nandroid backup. It successfully restored. I later went to flash the Team Perfection's Objection rom (doing all system/cache formats) and it went through the whole installation and froze at the wipe cache stage (over 20 minutes). I did a battery pull and tried again with the same result. I tried formatting again (both system and cache) and each froze at the same stage...each time with E: can't mount cache errors. I tried flashing the nandroid backup and it also froze at the cache stage, but after rebooting it did load exactly as before. Everything works except downloading from the market (I get a cannot download error every time I try to update any apps - error 492). I've tried factory restores from both cwm and from the system menu and they both freeze. I've tried re-flashing the stock rom through Odin and get the same cache errors. I've fixed permissions, re-flashed cwm and re-flashed gapps...same problem. Basically my phone works perfectly as is, but I cannot download or update any apps through the Play Store (I can sideload apks), and I cannot format, wipe, flash or backup anything new.
Telus
Android 2.3.6
I717UCLF5
kernel 2.6.35.11
cwm v5.8.4.3
tl;dnr - is there a way to reformat the cache partition without using cwm?
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
edit:
SOLVED: flashed an old version of CWM and was able to wipe!

great after reading I was going to suggest what you use to solve your issue.
can you solved in your title...
Oh, thanks for the heads up!
I was getting desperate. I actually flashed a couple different recoveries through Odin with no luck. I was dabbling with ADB but couldn't get the format command to work...then I decided to flash a really old recovery as a last ditch effort and luckily it worked.
Thanks everyone for reading. I've seen a lot of people with a similar issue and mixed results...I hope this helps someone.

I kinda messed up :P

Hello guys!
Today i installed ClockworkMod Touch recovery and installed SuperNexus 2.0 Build 4 Rom , the whole process took less than 5 minutes. But before i installed SuperNexus i did a "Nandroid?" backup which went fine and took lots of space xD Anyway i proceeded with SuperNexus and it installed fine and played with the rom for a few hours ... i decided to restore the backup so my whatsapp and all that stuff comes back .. i didnt know that it'll restore system too! Ofcourse the phone went on a bootloop so i went to CWM and wiped data/factory reset and the phone booted with Stock 4.1.2 and the phone is kinda slow at the first boot ... now i dont really know what to do :/ The nandroid backup is large and im afraid the SuperNexus rom wont fit and it'll cause errors n all xD Im really stuck at this point , should i repeat installing SuperNexus?
EDIT: I cleared 4.6GB of space , what to do next?
the backup restore shouldn't have caused a bootloop, that's weird.
it restores everything - system and data. so if you want to keep the data when switching ROMs, use Titanium backup or something if the sort. try restoring again. if it fails, try a custom restore of /data

Im not sure if its a bootloop , it keeps restarting boot animation after 1min , i fixed it anyway by wipe data/factory reset option thru recovery and its on stock now booting fine , Shall i flash SuperNexus again normally ? Other than wipe data/factory reset is there anything else to do ?
I mean, if you don't care about your data being lost - then sure
Yeah no probs , contacts on sim and pic's and movies on sd card , Ill just have to redownload my games and all Ill charge my phone then proceed , thanks One more question. Since I installed SuperNexus before does it have system files that I need to delete? Or wipe data/factory reset will cover it?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
no, a data wipe will do.
Success Thanks for the help xD I learned a lesson Ill use titanium backup from now on

Camera failed...

So, i have been happily using my sgs 3 for just less than a year and after having flashed quite a few roms, i decided that i should simply go back to stock android, which i did...
So i flashed my all time favorite (xxemg4, which is basically android 4.1.2) just like any other time...
But this time i decided that i should do a factory reset, which i did after i flashed the original rom, cwm recovery and boeffla kernel... So far so good. I wipe everything and proceed to boot the device. Everything is going according to plan. Then i decide that i want to take a selfie. But, my s3 doesnt want to... Camera failed, and camera app exits...
I told my self that its the first boot this is to be expected... So i rebooted... The result? Zip. Nada.
I wiped cache, the app's data, dalvik cache, nothing worked... what do i do now? Factory reset once again?
I even tried flashing a camera mod which i know that it works( i have tried it before, but this time nothing happened)
Help would be reaaaally appreciated

Did you flash the correct boeffla for stock roms?
Go to recovery delete /system /data /preload /cache and delvik cache. Use odin and reflash stock, factory reset then try from there.
It was definitely the correct kernel... now regarding the factory reset, i will need some time to get my backups up once again
On a side note if I try to use the camera, it makes some kind of sound, as if it is working, which it has never done before

[Q] MISTERY: Did an nandroid backup and device won't start

Hello everyone, I hope you can help me on this one since I'm already panicking.:
I have a Galaxy S3 international version, with Android 4.2.2, rooted, Philz recovery.
Wanted to flash a custom ROM, backed up EFS folder and data. Only thing missing was doing a NANDROID backup. Did the NANDROID backup to sdcard and rebooted....and now device won't start; it's stuck on the "SAMSUNG" logo. , WHAT THE HELL DID I WRONG?
I haven't formated anything or handled any system folders or anything. Just went , like in previous android phones, to recovery, made backup and rebooted. Any ideas? many thanks!

If its stuck in a bootloop factory reset and wipe cache in recovery. If that does not work install your backup and lastly if that doesn't work flash stock with odin.
Always remember the first thing to try whenever you are stuck in a bootloop is to factory reset wipe cache in recovery.

I did a full wipe and cache wipe and everything back to normal. What puzzles me is what was it that put the phone in a bootloop?

Good question but unfortunately I've not got a definite answer for you. Some times it is files leftover from a flash but no matter how experienced you are at flashing, bootloops are just one of those things you have to get used to.[emoji1]
