I have HTC Wildfire S (marvel) and have recently installed CyanogenMod 9.0.0-RC2 marvel ALPHA7.
Since I cant post to that topic, for whatever reason, here it goes.
First of all, huge thanks to dude who developed it. My phone is faster, more responsive, lots more features, etc. For me it was equivavalent from moving from windows ME to win 7.
Second, a big thanks to all of you who posted tutorials on how to root and install custom roms, backups, etc. I never laid eyes on Android OS up to few weeks ago and due to these tutorial (after some trail and error and long hours) managed to solo update and setup everything.
Now I would like to ask a few questions in relation to Cyanogen mode that arose in this brief use time.
1) Video is recording, but cant be played, also when I open it on my computer video is running but is garbled green. Is this a currently unresolved bug, and is there a workaround in a form of app that would be used to record instead?
2) When using 2g/3g internet with apps, the apps (e.g. facebook app) very quickly report there is no connection and I have to retap to try again. On wifi, there is no such problem (probably due to fact I have signal strength of 95%). Is there a way to change the time that apps wait for internet data before reporting no internet connection or time outing?
3) What apps can be safely deleted from the system part of the internal memory (apk and odex?) ?
1. If you record videos with your phone really often, go back to CM7. Qualcomm OpenMax drivers are needed for hardware video encoding/decoding to work on ICS+, but Qualcomm isn't releasing them for ARMv6. If you want to play videos on your phone, download some video player from Play Store that has it's own SW decoder (for example install MX player, go to settings and change decoder to SW).
3. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barebones
tnx but still problem
Thank you for replay.
I allready use the mx player. The video recorded, when I play it even with mx player is garbled, picture jumping, green overlay etc., same as on the computer.
Is there a way around this by some app which I would use to record instead?

Did you change the settings to SW? When you're watching the video is usually says HW, which means hardware decoding. SW is software decoding

No, I didnt, tried with both, on HW craches, on software garbbled.
Installed VideoREC video recorder and it records, and those recordings I can play fine via mx player on sw, while I still cant play it via gallery (which is not a biggy).
Also video is recorded as if it has low fps (maybe phone or driver limitation), but now at least I can record and view recordings.
Does my phone has hw chip for recording and playback? (cant seem to find this info, and cant understand different codec versions of mx player 5,6,7 - I have 6 installed but I am not sure wheather I should install 7 as well)

It's possible to play video on this device? How can I convert my video files to files which x8 understand?
It can take mp4 for sure : I have 2 videos in "/sdcard/video/"
You can try RockPlayer - Plays all divx videos so no need for convert the files at all the player is really great app and you can get it for free from the android market. I watch two movies both more then 2 hours long for a 50% battery so the player is great.
It looks like slideshow with software decoding, it's not works with hardware decoding.
It not play all avi formats well but works great for some if you have time to find out what format works on that phone but i Watch for example Fight Club on this and was nice and smooth also watch some Shows on it and it works great for that it`s very useful when you are at the bus or at the train and have time to kill.
When connected to the computer, download MediaGo from PC companion. It converts audio and video to x8 format, as well as adding it to the device.

yup. just use the media go from SE. it automatic convert the media file to match the hardware decoding. its an extra work but worth doing. to save some memory.

Cannot setup Media Go on my windows 7 x64 corporate. Fail while installing MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable package.
I use Avidemux GTK app on Ubuntu. Just use "auto->PSP" settings. it makes files that x8 decodes in hardware.
My favourite video playing app is arcMedia.
It is capable to handle largest video files thanks for video buffering.
But It is not working since I rooted my 2.1 with original rom.
Anybody knows why?
The problem is app2sd. arcMedia doesn't support app2sd yet.
I really wait for the update because you don't have to convert video files with it.
arcMedia plays normal xvid videos smoothly like desktop computers.
My pre-isntalled video player can't find any files, even those which i've recorded with camera. What's the problem?
What's the point of installing video player which can't find video files? for example if some1 buys x8 and don't want to use any of apps from the market, only pre-installed ones. so he can't watch any recorded videos? only getting there through camera app? it's the same with picture review.
Rockplayer v6 vfp version can play video rmvb well, of course, not as well as computer
It all depends on the encoding and the resolution of the files people.
Dont expect to be able to play a full hd avi or mp4 with a 600hz CPU!
Maybe the PSP compatible avi files you can d/l with utorrent work better.
N.
yeah,i would recommend you to convert the videos with Xmedia.(It Supports X8)
Its works everytime on my X8
I use yxplayer2, RockPlayer gives me a lot of erros playing the videos.
I can also say that vital player from market plays divx/xvid with no lag at all, for me it really is the best app of this kind.
to convert videos, try XMedia Recode or Format Factory
I use ImToo Video Ultimate Converter..
choose convert to android specification

there are lots of software players that play almost everything including mov and mpeg
Hi, Ive used RockPlayer quite extensivley and it played nice (even with subtitles) up untill last week when all of a sudden the video lagged awfully. I tried all the other players (yx, qq, arc...) and each and every one of them lags.
Now, Ive updated to the latest x8 software (from the first 2.1 release) and hoped it would help, but playback is the same.
Tried to enable JiT now, but that didnt help.
Any ideas why would something like this happen seemingly out of the blue?
EDIT: I might add that this is all in software mode (even for files that work in hardware mode). Id like software mode to work however because transcoding is kind of a pita job.
EDIT2: Found the culprit. H.264 @300kbps is too much for this phone period. Both xvid and divix play nice even at 1000kbps.
Hello all,
I have copied an .mpg file (which has been created from miniDV camcorder 1440 X 1080 50i 25mbps) into microSD card.
i tried to play it with many video player with no luck.
I found one player (Rockplayer lite) which work BUT with problem.
At the horizontal pannings there is a deinterlacing issue, (horizontal lines) which is no normal. Except of this problem, the video plays smoothly. There is a setting called Software Decoding/ Hardware decoding.
If I select hardware decoding I take an waring message: The file cannot be played with system player , so the video does not even start!
Do you know if there is a video player which support Hardware decoding?
Thanks in advance
Horizontal lines in interlaced video are normal. Player has to have special deinterlacing algorithms to suppress that.
I have also tried moboplayer with no luck

There is no decoding-hardware for MPEG1/2 in Exynos (nor in any other recent SoC for mobile-phones), so hardware-decoding is not possible.
You need a software-decoder that does deinterlacing as well, but I´m not sure if the CPU is powerful enough to do this in HD-resolutions, but it could be possible, as MPEG2 isn´t that demanding.
But it definitely will need a lot of energy, so to save power it is probably best to convert the video in format with hardware-support, and do the deinterlacing on your computer as well. If you just plan to watch it on your phone, you could simply throw away one field. Each field still has a high of 540 pixels, which is way over the 480 pixels of the display, so you won´t see any quality-advantage having both fields available to display on your phone, it would just burn more battery.
thanks for the reply. I have hundreds of family videos in .mpg (converted from miniDV) which play smoothly with PC or any Media Player.
So, I don't think it worth converting all these videos for watching them to phone.
P.S. I think it's time to get a new camcorder using card for instant drag 'n drop playback.

Are you sure of that? You may try this: open a player (i.e. moboplayer) take a screenshot (home+power) of a video file i.e. mkv. You 'll see that the entire picture will be black (blank) because of hardware acceleration. If you select from the settings of moboplayer, software decoding and take again a screenshot , you 'll notice that the picture is OK (furthermore you'll also notice that there is a stuttering in video playback).
I believe that this is a proof that the phone can handle a hardware decoding.

Sure, you won´t have all your videos on the phone anyway, so you can do a conversation if you need it.

Well, I have to disappoint you again. New camcorders which use cards to store the videos usually use AVCHD. The media-framework currently doesn´t support the TS-container which is used (in different variants) for example on BD, for DVB-broadcasting and AVCHD as well.
There is currently no way on Android to use hardware-acceleration if the container is not supported.
So you will have to use software-decoding as well, which certainly can not be fast enough when using MPEG4-AVC in HD-resolutions.
So, there will be no instant drag-and-drop either, but at least we can hope for some firmware-update to include support for AVCHD, and of course you can always remux AVCHD-files in one of the supported containers, like mp4 or mkv, because the codecs are already supported.

Of course there is a DSP in the SoC to accelerate decoding of several media-formats.
But the video-processor decodes several types of MPEG4, it certainly can´t decode MPEG1/2.
Assuming that you want enjoy MPG files on Galaxy S II, S III, S IV, you'll need to get some help from 3rd-party video player app like mxplayer or 3rd-party video converter software like Brorsoft's Video Converter to convert MPG files to H.264 or MPEG-4 encoded MP4 videos for Samsung Galaxy.
Nice find on digging out this thread. And four years later, that was a quick response.

I copied a couple of 720p videos to my Galaxy Tab 10.1. The native video player says it can't play them. I tried a couple of other video players that generally do a good job and were able to play them using software decoding, but one had a really poor frame rate, the other ran in super slow motion.
Seems like the hardware isn't up to software decoding HD video and hardware decoding is finicky about formats?
These movies were both mpeg4 video, aac audio in a mp4 container.
When I copied them over it offered to convert them for me, but if I let it do so it seems to be very slow and would take over 9 hours. I'm sure I could do better using handbrake or something similar to recode as necessary.
But can someone summarize the requirements to get hardware accelerated decoding (or sufficiently fast software decoding) of 720p/1080p video?
Thanks.
Did you try Diceplayer and BS Player? Both are available from the Market for free (ad supported) and played all my 720p videos (most were .mkv).
I'd suggest giving them a try (you also have to download the tegra2 plugins for both players).
As for 1080p its a far cry - depending on the specific encoding options it might work fine or be really crappy. Best bet would be to re-encode the 1080p videos you want to watch on your tab, but 720p is usually manageable (and more then enough for our tab, since it's basically the resolution of our screen)

I like how they say the tab can handle 1080p video's, But forgot to mention "it would lag like ****" Youtube apparently get's played in 720p HD whereas getting a 1080p video to play is far from possible, perhaps ICS would make it possible, for now the stock decoders are horrible, HORRIBLE. Use the stock Movie Player/Video and it's like watching Lego or Minecraft graphics. Dice Player Ad is the best out there, and the only video player I use.
Just don't forget to download the Tegra2 plugin with it (Free ofcourse).
Thanks guys. I'll give Dice Player a try and see if it does a better job. I don't usually use 1080p so as long as it can decode 720p smoothly I'd be happy.
From what I've read, it seems that Tegra 2 can't decode Mpeg4 High Profile, which probably explains why the videos I tried don't work well. I'll also try recoding them with standard profile and see if those work. But apparently, most HD video (including commercially downloaded video) is high profile encoded so the fact that the Tegra 2 can't decode those is rather pathetic. I don't want to have to code/recode everything specifically for the tablet so that's rather disappointing...
OK, gave those a try:
BS Player: Slow Motion...
Dice Player: BRILLIANT! Works perfectly!
Thanks for the tip!

Hence the name, BS player' It's BS cause they wanna market their stuff and make people pay, Their software acceleration is horrible. Dice player uses HW Accelerator which is why the video's are intensely smooth.

BS player also uses HW acceleration. In my experience it worked fine with most video - it has some problems in the first few seconds which Dice doesn't (since it doesn't start the video until it's loaded) but after it "warms up" it seems to work just fine for most of the stuff.
BS Player has some nice extra features like LAN mode, automatic subtitle downloading etc. But yeah, Dice player is usually better for playing movies "locally" (I'm using CIFSmanager to mount my media folder over wi-fi).
Every now and then you come across videos that Dice has problems with however, and then BS usually works (once I had a video that played at like double speed in Dice player, while the audio was normal speed. Changing the 1.0x 1.5x etc. speed settings on the right had no effect. BS player helped then ), so I keep both on my device.

A simple search: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468498&highlight=cifs .
Basically, you have to push the cifs.ko module and then insmod it. Some ROMs (like the 3G ICS KANG) have the module included in the appropriate folder, so you can easily just modprobe it (open terminal: write "su" and then "modprobe cifs").
Then you just install CIFSmanager and set it to the appropriate IP/folder (for instance something like 192.168.1.42/Media - this would go to the comp at 192.168.1.42 and try to load up the shared folder with the name "Media").
You'll probably want to set up your router so it always gives the same IP to your media computer, as you don't want to check it's IP and change the settings every time
PS: Using cifsmanager is not without it's downsides though. I've noticed that if I turn off the wi-fi without first unmounting through the manager, the tab freezes (for about half a minute or so) when you try to show the folder containing the networked files. Mind you, I say show, not open - even just trying to see how many files are inside can lock it.
I worked around that by creating a CIFS folder on the root of the "sdcard", then extra folders inside CIFS for each mount. So I have /sdcard/CIFS/XBMC and /sdcard/CIFS/Music. Now I can safely look at my /sdcard folder without my tab freezing up (if I forget to unmount) - but if I try to open the CIFS folder it'll freeze up for a bit, then it'll give me the option to kill my file manager.
So basically, don't put the folder into which you'll mount directly on the root of your sdcard, or it'll become unusable if you forget to unmount
When ever I play a video on my phone at specific points videos artifact. It will always be the same point but not the same point in a video but different points for different videos. I have looked all over and have not found anyone with this issue for the EVO LTE. I am wondering what this could be. I have tried all that I could think of. I changed roms, video formats, video players. The videos work fine on my other devices and my PC.
Attached is a part of a video that artifacts. Any help would be appreciated
A list of what file types and players you are using on your device would be helpful...
.mv4 and .mp4
And every player I have tried does this.
Do these videos work on someone else's EVO LTE?
Do they work on another Android device (perhaps the OG EVO)?
Do you have a spare SD card you can copy the videos to, one that you have performed a fresh format on?
I recently got vlc for my phone and it plays the videos back just fine. VLC to the rescue yer again.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
use MX Player. its the best video player for the LTE that i have found so far, its made for phones with dual cores or more. used to use Vplayer but it didnt work well on this phone
I will try that out, VLC player is able to play this one video without problems but it will not play any 720p full length episodes. The video that works fine is short and it not 720p.
EDIT:
So apparently MX Player crashes at the exact same point that VLC does in the video, also MX player does not seem to run the video as smooth.
Using hardware decoding makes the video not run as smooth and crashes at that point. Software decoding is smoother and just artifacts at the point instead of crashing.
I found the issue. I had a bad USB hub. The videos play fine now.
Since no one is replying to my post, I decided to rewrite this again.
Problems:
Displaying "Samsung Galaxy Win GT-I8550" during boot
Most of the videos on YouTube (app) cannot be played
YouTube (app) and video players (Video Player or MX Player) is limited up to 360p
Crash when "Videos from the web" card is displaying on Chrome
Why do I care about these?
After countless times of installing custom ROM, I decided to revert back everything to default.
So, I installed I8552XXAMK1 on my phone with Odin3 and I found that my phone is displaying "Samsung Galaxy Win GT-I8550" when it is booting up.
I do know that GT-I8552 is just GT-i8550 but with dual SIM.
This problem might be the reason why my phone can't play any videos that are above 360p. (Problem 3.)
Recently, my phone cannot play most of the videos on Youtube. Even the videos that I used to watch with my phone cannot be watch now.
I uninstalled YouTube (uninstall updates) and I found that I can play the videos that I used to watch. But, after I installed latest version of YouTube, I cannot play them.
I don't want to use old version of YouTube since I really like the UI of latest version of YouTube.
So, I would love to know how to fix this problem without needing me to force myself to use old versions.
I think this problem is related to Problem 1.
My phone cannot play videos that are higher than 360p.
On YouTube, I always need to watch them in 360p, which is pretty hard to me when I am watching educational videos that involves text. Well, this is fine since I can at least watch them.
But, when I downloaded video that are above 360p (stored in phone), I cannot watch it at all. Unlike YouTube that allows me to change resolution, video players cannot.
So, I installed MX Player and needed to enable SW decoder to watch 480p and above videos.
Problem fixed? No, I want to watch videos on YouTube on 480p so it is easier for me to see things.
I really hate this one. Every time I am using Google, it always crashes when "Videos from the web" cards shows up.
Please help me fix this one because this is really disturbing me.
Please excuse my language since English is not my main language and I rarely ask for help online. You might noticed that my sentences are not really well-organised and really hard to read. I did my best to write this and I hope you reply to it.
