Hello guys, i am experiancing a problem with my s2, when i send a long sms with the stock app, it automatically converts to a mms which then charges me. I was wondering if there is a fix or mod for this?
I have tried searching but replies involve using a 3rd party sms app which i prefer not to.
I am currently rooted, on stock ICS 4.0.4 with Siyaah Kernal 4.1.5. Thanks
You didn't search very hard did you?
Admittedly you'd need to move to a deodexed rom.

You don't need to move to a deodexed ROM to use a deodexed apk file.
If you're on an odexed ROM, all you have to do is:
1. back up the current .apk and .odex files for whatever app you're replacing - in this case, mms.apk and mms.odex (unnecessary, but highly recommended)
2. replace the existing .apk file
3. delete the existing .odex file
Edit: forgot 4. Reboot. I think this will also cause you to lose all your existing messages though.
Well I've learnt something! Thanks.
I assume existing messages could be replace with Titanium back up?

I checked the thread in the first link, and theres various mms.apks for various roms etc. I am on stock ics 4.0.4, which one will be ideal for me then? thanks

Are you referring to the link that Ben81 posted above? I only see one Mms.apk in that thread.
However, usually the rule of thumb is it is best to use a system app apk that most closely corresponds with your current build of Android to ensure maximum compatibility.
EDIT to add: I just noticed you said you're on stock ICS 4.0.4. That mms.apk in the link from Ben81 was tested on VillianRom 1.1, which is based on XWKE7 - which is Gingerbread. I would NOT try to use it if I were you.
EDIT 2: Ah, I see there are mms.apk files sprinkled throughout the thread, instead of all being compiled into post 1. What I said above regarding compatibility still stands. Look for the version that most closely matches your Android build version.

I just updated my firmware to STOCK 2.2 (KA6) which I downloaded from CHAINFIRE's thread. Now I rooted my phone and its working fine for me.
Than I see another post for Deodexed KA6 from Whitehawkx. what is that. that also says original stock. am confused now.
can any one please explain me difference between both stock & Odex & deodex things.
Also how to flash this Deodexed KA6 (same as ODIn or any other method).
I was wondering the same thing....so i googled it...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
This maybe inaccurate but I have a reasonable idea of what it is... it's just hard to explain.
If you look in the system/app and system/framework you will see the filename.apk along with it's counterpart filename.odex. With a deodexed rom it places the filename.odex and converts it to filename.dex (not odex) and places it within filename.apk. But most importantly the framework MUST support the deodexed files! If the framework is looking for filename.odex files that aren't there you will end up in a bootloop. It just won't work. But the benifits of having deodexed files is that it's easier to theme and replace. In some cases you can take a app.apk and replace it with differentappfromdifferentrom.apk. When you have a odexed rom you just can't do that.
You will notice that many themes and modifcations will not include support for odex roms so having a deodexed rom is definitly the way to go!
Some people have argued that having an odexed rom causes your device to perform better! But I have never noticed any difference personally and frankly I'm skeptical. Tasters choice.
I googled it as well. Here was one of the better hits....

oooohhhhhhhhhhhh! thx now I know and knowing is half the battle GI JOE... GO COBRA!
So I updated all of the mods I use in my ROM for the new 2.17.651.5 base. I thought it might be helpful to others if I put them all in one place. Most of these mods were made using threads by SteelH and others who actually tell you how these things are done. If anyone wants to know how a certain mod is made (of those listed below), PM me or post and I'll explain how I did it.
Flash these at your own risk (good idea to make a backup of /system and /data before flashing).
The mods in this post are for deodex ROMs.
You can find mods for odex ROMs here. Thanks Rydah805!
7in1_Reboot_2.17.651.5.zip adds Power menu and reboot options (not sure if hot restart works correctly).
Download DEODEX
HDR_Panorama_2.17.651.5.zip adds HDR and Panorama modes to HTCCamera.
Download DEODEX
MMSSize_SMSBackup_SMSSecureBox_2.17.651.5.zip adds the mirror entry back to the app drawer, adds 1M, 2M, 5M MMS, adds SMS backup option, and SMS Secure Box option. The MMS size should be flashable to make it work thanks to Vin255764. The mirror app will still require you to place default.xml from the flashable .zip into /system/customize/MNS/ of your ROM before you flash your ROM. I'll try to find how to add the mirror app to a current ROM. If you really want all of these features and know how to backup/restore your stuff, just clear /data after flashing the .zip and it should work ok from my limited understanding (I just make my own ROMs ).
Download DEODEX
RemoveUSBDebugging_2.17.651.5.zip removes the USB debugging icon.
Download DEODEX
RoamOnlyOption_2.17.651.5.zip adds Roam Only under Settings-Wireless&Networks-Mobile Network Settings-Roaming.
Download DEODEX
SprintHotSpotHack_2.17.651.5.zip changes two 0's to 1's so you can use this without paying for it.
Download DEODEX
SystemUI_mods_2.17.651.5.zip removes GPS recticle, removes recent apps from pulldown, changes to display 3G/1x properly, and adds extended quick settings.
Download DEODEX
SystemUI_mods_WithRecentApps_2.17.651.5.zip is the same as above without recent apps removed.
Download DEODEX
Please post if something doesn't work and ALSO if things do work .
Thanks to everyone who has figured out how to do these mods and Brut.all for making apktool so easy to use.

How hard would it be for you to make that systemui.apk but with recent apps?
Might be silly question but I'm guessing it doesn't matter whether I'm using an odex or deodex version of .5 right? I can flash these on either one? Haven't quite figured out the odex/deodex thing but I believe that only affects themes. Thanks

Sorry, these are all deodex. I'll update OP. I think if you delete the .odex and use the deodex, it may work (but I don't know to be honest).
Thanks for these mods and your quick response!!! Any chance for odex versions? My phone seems to really like odex roms for some reason. Probably placebo but what can ya do. If not, no biggy. Just awesome to have great devs here sharing their hard work! Mucho appreciated

Not very. Just change a 2 to a 0 in StatusBarFlag.smali inside SystemUI.apk. Added to original post as SystemUI_mods_WithRecentApps_2.17.651.5.zip.

I can probably do that since the decompiled .smali's are all the same. I'll try to do it some time when I'm bored .
Thank you mwalt2 for the mods. Your contribution is much appreciated.
so flashing "MMSSize_SMSBackup_SMSSecureBox_2.17.651.5.zip" alone will give me the option to have up to a 5mp mms?
i still see 300k,600k,1m even after flashing

It's supposed to, but I may have messed something up. Where is the option at? I can't seem to find it at the moment .
edit - I found the setting. Mine shows 1M, 2M, and 5M. I'll look at the .zip and try to get it fixed.
edit #2 - I had an error in the updater scripts to set the permissions. They should all be fixed and you can flash again or just fix permissions on \system\customize\default.xml and \system\app\Mms.apk with a root file explorer.

That's the xml then. I'm pretty sure it's probably a permissions issue. As you have it now, the 300k will correspond to 1m, 600k to 2m, and 1m to 5m. I'll try to test it more tomorrow (has it worked for anyone else?).
i flashed the mms zip and the sizes dont change (which i dont care about lol) and i also cannot get the mirror app to show up in my app drawer. how do i fix it?
if its not too much trouble could you make a separate zip that just adds the mirror app to the app drawer??
I flashed the boot menu, HDR/pan cam, sysUI with recent apps,MMS on stock ROM with latest updates with twrp2.0 recovery and none of the 4 worked....
Thanks. They all seem to work great. Test them tomorrow. Actually came back to 2.17.651.2 from fresh 4.1 just to try these.
Flashed them all at once. Smooth
It's so late, I only wish I had some espresso ....

Any ideas how to install the AOSP ICS MMS.APK?
I'm running the LPB leak so i've got the ugly TW MMS.apk. I've tried MMS.APK from a CM9 download but it didn't work. Is there a flashable CWM file available? Currently using Handcent.
Thanks
I've been looking into this myself, as I much prefer the ICS look to the horrible iPhone-alike TW MMS app.
There's a thread that provided the stock ICS app, but the files were on multiupload, so it's not downloadable at the moment. The OP there indicated that there was a problem running the MMS app anyway.
I have tried grabbing the MMS.apk from the latest CM9 release for the SGSII, and that exhibits the described problem; the thread list appears, but the app FCs when trying to open a message thread.
---------- Post added at 01:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:15 PM ----------
There's also an ICS MMS app on the market, but it has been modified to include ads, so I'm not interested in that one.
Some guys looked at removing the ads, but the thread was shut down (for obvious reasons).

How did you try to install. As an apk. or using root explorer to pass to system/app folder?
Just wanted to bump this thread. I love the AOSP MMS app, and it FC's on me on Samsung LPH firmware. I tried pasting it to system/app, and it fc's when I try to send a message. Hopefully someone can port this apk
I believe you have to replace another apk as well.
If you want a rom that already has it, try Spike's Pure ICS special edition. It has aosp mms, calendar and contacts.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Westcrip's Resurrection Remix 9.4 is really good too. I've been using ever since 9.2 and it's been perfect so far - no FCs or bootloops or any problems at all, really. And apps are AOSP. He also has black versions of AOSP SMS and Market among others, which I love.
+1 for the AOSP mms.apk. Also tried replacing mms.apk with AOSP from different roms but it doesn't work.
I'm using Spike's Pure ICS 6.1, too bad the special edition is only in English. If Spike (or someone else) could give us a working AOSP mms.apk that would be great!
Now who wants AOSP MMS.apk for their S II?!
Download the following zip file and flash it:
http://www.mediafire.com/?8dejky1cqzc14lv
Note:
1. Make sure you flash it only after you have already synced up your contacts with google (do not flash it immediately after flashing a new rom)
2. This zip will replace your SMS app, CONTACTS app, CALENDAR app and your CALCULATOR app to AOSP versions.
3. Be sure you take a nandroid backup before flashing.
4. You must be in a Samsung ICS ROM (XXLPQ only) for this zip to work.
5. I did not create this zip. The credit goes to Spike_M who made this zip that can be flashed to his ROM Pure ICS. Do try out his ROM.
ENJOY!!
Thanks RobinRichard, though unfortunately this didn't work for me on XXLPQ (root with CF-Root). Phone and messaging services die horribly after flashing that zip with CWM -- "phone has stopped" and "messaging has stopped" dialogs constantly pop up
Will have a play when I have a bit more time, but I have restored the Samsung apps for now.

Im on lpq (litening rom 2.1) and it works perfectly for me too!
I used AOSP mms.apk from Spike's Pure ICS V7.0. It worked well. Btw, I used root explorer to copy the apk in/system/app
Hi,
How did you paste the apk into system/apps? mine says read only ?!?
And also did you just paste 1 file or did you copied a few? like the files in the framework?
Someone have dialer app? =) btw, i'll make a custom rom with dsixda kitchen, so, i put the files in /system/app, right? also for the files in framework folder? right? =)

You can use a program such as Root Explorer to remount it. If you don't have that, there are other ways to do this using adb.
Does anyone happen to have a working mms.apk thaybis the same as the one in cm9? I think the aosp one is horridly ugly as is the Sammy one, but love the one used in cm9. But because it has a long way to go yet I don't wanna run cm9 as an every day driver.
Hello.
Stocked SGS3, correctly rooted with CF-Root-SGS3-6.2, stock FW.
How to increase 4x4 GRID size on Main Screens / Widgets?
With such a resolution it has to be possible. Need it a lot...
I have all the tools ready (Root Explorer, CWM(M) and stuff),
don't mind directly editing Linux configuration files (but do not know
how to put them back to Kernel and which ones to touch ).
Want to stay on stock ROM as much as possible (I mean not prefer to flash complete new custom ROM so far).
Huge thanks.
There's a thread in the apps section with a load of .apk's for the launcher with different formats.

Try Nova Launcher or Apex. Both are fantastic and would do the job and more.

Big thanks. Seems to be exactly what I need.
However: is it OK to do it on stock ODEX'ed ROM?
Because that thread refers to the APK file to be replaced,
but I also see .odex next to it with the same name.
So it is safe just to replace .apk but not replacing .odex?
Thanks a lot.

You need either an odexed version and replace both the apk and the odex, or change to a deodexed rom I believe.

In the thread referenced above I only see *.apk files.
Also inside those *.apk (I see it is archive actually) I see "classes.dex"
file inside, while in original stock *.apk I do not see it inside but I see
.odex file outside of the .apk. So can it be that it is Ok to replace
since classes.dex is "built-in" the apk?
No, you would need a TWLauncher.apk (or whatever the name is) and a TWLauncher.odex file, most modified files are deodexed and only suitable for deodexed ROMs.
I noticed quite a few ROMs in the dev forum with such apps. I am running Omega ROM, which does not have such a mod. Is this mod available for download somewhere?
Thanks,
D.
Which Roms?
If its in the app, then you download the rom and take the app.
