[Q] Main Screens / Widgets - GRID SIZE increase - how to? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
Stocked SGS3, correctly rooted with CF-Root-SGS3-6.2, stock FW.
How to increase 4x4 GRID size on Main Screens / Widgets?
With such a resolution it has to be possible. Need it a lot...
I have all the tools ready (Root Explorer, CWM(M) and stuff),
don't mind directly editing Linux configuration files (but do not know
how to put them back to Kernel and which ones to touch ).
Want to stay on stock ROM as much as possible (I mean not prefer to flash complete new custom ROM so far).
Huge thanks.

There's a thread in the apps section with a load of .apk's for the launcher with different formats.

Try Nova Launcher or Apex. Both are fantastic and would do the job and more.

Big thanks. Seems to be exactly what I need.
However: is it OK to do it on stock ODEX'ed ROM?
Because that thread refers to the APK file to be replaced,
but I also see .odex next to it with the same name.
So it is safe just to replace .apk but not replacing .odex?
Thanks a lot.

You need either an odexed version and replace both the apk and the odex, or change to a deodexed rom I believe.

In the thread referenced above I only see *.apk files.
Also inside those *.apk (I see it is archive actually) I see "classes.dex"
file inside, while in original stock *.apk I do not see it inside but I see
.odex file outside of the .apk. So can it be that it is Ok to replace
since classes.dex is "built-in" the apk?

No, you would need a TWLauncher.apk (or whatever the name is) and a TWLauncher.odex file, most modified files are deodexed and only suitable for deodexed ROMs.

[Q] what is the difference between Odex & deoDexed

I just updated my firmware to STOCK 2.2 (KA6) which I downloaded from CHAINFIRE's thread. Now I rooted my phone and its working fine for me.
Than I see another post for Deodexed KA6 from Whitehawkx. what is that. that also says original stock. am confused now.
can any one please explain me difference between both stock & Odex & deodex things.
Also how to flash this Deodexed KA6 (same as ODIn or any other method).
I was wondering the same thing....so i googled it...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
This maybe inaccurate but I have a reasonable idea of what it is... it's just hard to explain.
If you look in the system/app and system/framework you will see the filename.apk along with it's counterpart filename.odex. With a deodexed rom it places the filename.odex and converts it to filename.dex (not odex) and places it within filename.apk. But most importantly the framework MUST support the deodexed files! If the framework is looking for filename.odex files that aren't there you will end up in a bootloop. It just won't work. But the benifits of having deodexed files is that it's easier to theme and replace. In some cases you can take a app.apk and replace it with differentappfromdifferentrom.apk. When you have a odexed rom you just can't do that.
You will notice that many themes and modifcations will not include support for odex roms so having a deodexed rom is definitly the way to go!
Some people have argued that having an odexed rom causes your device to perform better! But I have never noticed any difference personally and frankly I'm skeptical. Tasters choice.
I googled it as well. Here was one of the better hits....

Transfer of Custom rom themes

I would like to transfer the theme from one rom to another. I will be transferring Scott's Developer edition theme from his Cleanrom Developer edition to a stock deodex'd rom. Is there any way to do this? I have little experience with themeing roms but I can follow directions pretty good.
isn't cleanrom pretty much a stock rom?

it can be as simple as pushing the specific apps into your phone but it isnt most of the time...
devs make loads of modifications and such so usually isnt as simple
but id suggest you check out tutorials about themeing and the intro to themeing thread

call me crazy but I *think* the blue theme from the dev edition is actually a skin defaulted by the ROM, called blu bugaloo or something? see if there's an apk in /system/app for that ROM, put it into the same place for the ROM you want, it should just show up in your skin options, apply it? you could also ask scott, he's a good dev and quite helpful

the skin is basically fusion.apk, to get any other themed items from a ROM, you could pull out these and use them in your new ROM:
/system/app/SystemUI.apk
/system/app/Rosie.apk
/system/framework/framework-res.apk
/system/framework/htc.resources.apk
/system/app/dialer.apk (only if the dialer is themed)
/system/app/phone.apk (same ^^^)

This has worked for everything but the GPS icon. The icon is still stock and visible even when disabled. Scott's rom has replaced the GPS icon and made it invisible when GPS was turned off. Any ideas?
you can replace the gps on icon with one that has been made transparent, but without being able to use pc at the moment cant tell you where its at. i think in either systemui or framework-res

I tried copying the systemui from Scott's rom to the stock rom and flashing it, but it doesn't make a difference. I verified that the same images from Scott's rom are in the rom I just flashed, as I can view them with root explorer. It still shows stock though.
The three custom image files for the gps icon in scotts rom are:
stat_sys_gps_acquiring
stat_sys_gps_acquiring1
stat_sys_gps_acquiring2
However, the rom is ignoring these files and instead using:
sym_gpsone_0_sprint
sym_gpsone_3_sprint
sym_gpsone_0_vzw
These three files are the stock white sense crosshair icons.
This is a view of the files from SystemUI.apk res\drawable-hdpi
The three blue icons are the ones I want to use.
That was small, here is a bigger version:

if you have 7zip you can open the apk with the images you want, copy them to your desktop, rename them to the name the new rom uses, then paste or drag them into the new apk (opened with 7zip), by the way, I think/hope you're off one png name, no way is a sprint rom using a vzw png lol
I was wrong, it is only using two files:
sym_gpsone_0_sprint
sym_gpsone_3_sprint
One is GPS active and one is GPS off.
I dont think renaming it is the issue. I have tried copying the entire systemUI.apk folder from Scott's rom over to the stock rom, and it still does the same thing. The default icons are also present in Scott's rom, just not used.
My next question is, what file (XML file?) references these files?

-trust me, pull the 3 images you want out of his sysUI using 7zip
-rename from stat_blah_acquire_0
to sym_sprint_gps_blah_0
-repeat steps for other pngs
-open up new rom sysui with 7zip
-paste in renamed pngs
-push modded apk to phone or flash it

[Q] Long Sms converts to mms, disable?

Hello guys, i am experiancing a problem with my s2, when i send a long sms with the stock app, it automatically converts to a mms which then charges me. I was wondering if there is a fix or mod for this?
I have tried searching but replies involve using a 3rd party sms app which i prefer not to.
I am currently rooted, on stock ICS 4.0.4 with Siyaah Kernal 4.1.5. Thanks
You didn't search very hard did you?
Admittedly you'd need to move to a deodexed rom.

You don't need to move to a deodexed ROM to use a deodexed apk file.
If you're on an odexed ROM, all you have to do is:
1. back up the current .apk and .odex files for whatever app you're replacing - in this case, mms.apk and mms.odex (unnecessary, but highly recommended)
2. replace the existing .apk file
3. delete the existing .odex file
Edit: forgot 4. Reboot. I think this will also cause you to lose all your existing messages though.
Well I've learnt something! Thanks.
I assume existing messages could be replace with Titanium back up?

Are you referring to the link that Ben81 posted above? I only see one Mms.apk in that thread.
However, usually the rule of thumb is it is best to use a system app apk that most closely corresponds with your current build of Android to ensure maximum compatibility.
EDIT to add: I just noticed you said you're on stock ICS 4.0.4. That mms.apk in the link from Ben81 was tested on VillianRom 1.1, which is based on XWKE7 - which is Gingerbread. I would NOT try to use it if I were you.
EDIT 2: Ah, I see there are mms.apk files sprinkled throughout the thread, instead of all being compiled into post 1. What I said above regarding compatibility still stands. Look for the version that most closely matches your Android build version.

[REQ][UI][GB/ICS/JB] Xperia Pro Stock UI

Hi guys!
I need stock ui's (frameworks) mod of Xperia Pro. These ui's can be GB, ICS or JB. I want these ui's for the Keyboard letter case visibles. All custom roms ui's don't have case view, only stock roms ui's have this.
I can't make own ui. If you can not give me these ui's flashable zip file, show me how to export ui from stock firmwares....

Thanks guys! I will try it.
I tried with as:
First, copied framework-res.apk from official Xperia Pro's ICS firmware to my desktop.
Than I downloaded this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147958, and opened zip with 7-zip and replaced rom's framework-res.apk file with stock file.
After than, flashed modified rom's zip, everything completed successfully.
After flashing, I rebooted my phone. After reboot, the animated boot logo not gone for 10 minitues. So my phone not booted successfully.
The result is fail
It will not work because you are trying to use ICS framework on JB :silly:
The two are not compatible with one another.

OK. I have watched video and can say so there is as I said: You want me to overwrite original apps in my phone. Exactly that was shown on the video. So I want to ask:
- For what you use Xposed?
- How you made saving original files from system?
I am not argue with necessity of overwriting original files in system. But you should warn everyone who want to use your mod so your files should replace original ones and it is necessary to make backup, as I do not see any automatic backup facility.
