hello,
i own a galaxy s3 and i am wondering whether it has a backlight issue or not.
backlight is set to automatic; it happens that, when the phone is not being used for some seconds, the phone trims down the backlighting BUT the backlight is not 'smooth', ie it looks like it trims it down through two or three steps. the same applies when i touch the screen and the phone raises up the backlighting.
does it happen to everyone...? unfortunately, i cannot compare to another galaxy right now.
thanks.
Dont think i have seen that on mine but, the S3 doesn't have a backlight.
okay, will try to make a video and upload it.

You should try reading up on AMOLED screens. There is no backlight. Each pixel has its own LED.

alright, I forgot the theoretical part, but it doesn't change the fact that the screen luminosity doesn't change smoothly..

If i switch off the room lights i will see it better its a black background and has a vertical white line,, it does not last for even a sec. then the unlock screen will appear
should i get back to the suppier and ask for a another phone or its normal? it is from the ROM??
pls do help me!!!
Mine is the same. I should think its the software and not hardware related.

I recently purchased this phone and I am moving from a Nexus S, which had auto brightness however I can't seem to find it in the options of the Xperia, I did remove a few apps when I got it so I just wondered if anyone could confirm if the phone has the feature or not?
Thanks
Yes it has, but you cant confiqure this by your self without root and some mods.

Just tested the auto brightness in bright sunlight. It is working fine. Put my hand over the sensor and the screen got darker. Removed it an the screen got brighter again.
The brightness changes are very slow though. It takes the phone a few seconds to adjust. Which actually is pretty nice since you don't get abrupt changes.

Is it happening in all games or just some. If it's just some then it's just poor programming on the developers part

So far it happens in all the games I tried: Tempel run, asphalt6, all versions of angry birds, chees master, 3d pool,
On my sg s2 i never have this problem. Anybody else having the same problem?? And anybody know a setting that can solve it???
Now I tried several games with the "Smart Stay" turnes on, and it is not working 100%, it is very anoying that the screen turn off!!!!!!
Anybody have the same problem???
While I'm really enjoying my S3 so far. Smart Stay is almost a complete fail.. I've made sure it's activated, and is there anything I'm missing? I'm constantly having to reactivate my screen when I'm reading articles etc..
I'm confident this can be fixed either officially or unofficially, but something has to be done.
Anyone else having trouble?

Smart stay should work if the front cam is able to see your face.
You can check this by opening the camera and choose the front cam.
Now make sure your face is near the middle of the screen.
For me I've to move the bottom away from me and the top closer to me so the cam can see me. It takes a bit training to hold the phone like that but it works (for me).
I find totally ridiculous if you have to hold the phone in a certain angel for the screen not to turn off during games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am happy with my S III, but the problem with the screen turning off is fatal.......I hope somehow there will be a fix for this very soon.

If you read my post, you would have noticed, that the problem actually is that the screen is turning off during games without the smart stay turned on. When I turn on smart stay, the screen still turns off sometimes, as the smart stay is not working correct!! (smart stay not working for me in low light, and you need to hold the phone in a certain angel, witch is not possible when you play games and move the phone around)
Other people have this problem........???????????????

Yeah I posted a message on the thread and still waiting. Just wanted to see if anyone had it laying around to share..
Found it one that works! Attached below for others. It lowers brightness to 1, stock brightness is 40. A lot less distraction for operating your phone in the dark. Just take the 50dimleds file(not all the folds, but just the file alone) and place it into system/etc/init.d/and reboot. This should save me a bit of battery too, yeah I know very little. lol

Find this file:
System/etc/init.d/01buttonlights
Open the file in that location in root explorer or similar app. Then in the file, change the brightest value from 1 to something higher. 40 is the brightest.

Have you tried flashing the ROM a second time, after a full wipe (if possible)? Sometimes these things just have the tiniest little glitches and nobody can figure out why they happen, yet a second flash miraculously fixes/solves whatever happened the first time out.
I've yet to see anyone mention any issues with the buttons - they're still considering "soft" buttons, however. As soon as I saw "hard keys" my thought was problems with the power/sleep, volume, or the camera button and not the capacitive touch ones under the display.
Just so you know...
Also, I note you say they're not lighting up - the real question then becomes are they still functional even though they're not lighting up?
Yes the soft buttons are functioning...but not lighting up....but few hours ago it was fine....but now it's not lighting up....maybe some setting issue....anybody know how to solve this in setting's mode?
