Getting My S2 Later And I Wanna Flash CM9 to it - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey there xda members.. im gonna get my s2 later and its on ics already, i have downloaded the file cm-9.1.0-galaxys2.zip..
now i dont know what is the steps for flash it.. i dont wanna brick my device ><
do i flash a rooted kernel with cwm added then reboot to cwm and flash the zip file?

Follow the instructions on the first page of the CM9 discussion thread to the letter & you'll be fine. Use the n00b proof Odin method & you won't need to do anything to your phone beforehand.
Re: bricking your device, if the possibility of same scares you, leave your phone stock & enjoy it. Flashing always encompasses a very small risk of bricking the phone (the number of bricks we see on here every week is testimony to that, despite what some people here might tell you).
However, if you follow instructions to the letter & take your time/learn/read you should be fine.

so the CM9 Resurrection Edition is like flashing stock rom to my s2 but its the custom rom cm9?

Correct. As I said, read that thread, everything you need to know is there.
If it were me, I wouldn't be doing anything to the phone until I'd read thoroughly/understood the first page of that thread so I had the process down pat, then read the last 10/20 pages to get an idea of what the current build is like.

[Q] Flashed the wrong rom and now I need help

Hello there,
I was so eager to try to get ICS on my SGH-i777 and now i screw up trying to get back to normal.
This was the forum i used to screw myself over (Here)
I used this guide to try to recover everything back to normal (Here)
Still doesn't work. I booted past the official Samsung logo and now I reached "Kernel Panic Upload Mode" [RST_STAT = 0x20000000]
Can anyone help me out?
Lol. Idk how you can even do that.
that is why there are 100+ posts telling you not to do it. follow the guides or get a new phone.
What guide do you suggest?
Can you get in download mode?.
One time at football camp, I put my shoulder pads in my arse.
@TOA Duck: Yes I can. I tried using the
"Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click" too.
The tools you need should all be in the Download Repository.
I'm not sure which parts you will need to flash. If you need to flash bootloaders or the param.lfs, make sure you know exactly what you are doing first. There is risk of a hard brick that would take professional help to recover from.
You might start your research with this thread. If you are at all unsure of what to do, ask questions before you try something.

Best Way to Root

Ok, I'm sure there is an identical thread, but after scanning for over an hour I can't find any clear answer to my question (Even the sticky has multiple ways to do it with over 500 pages). Each thread and article I read contradicts the last one, stating that this is the best way to root, or this is the best way to root and that the last one I read doesn't work well. Some of them involve flashing with Odin, some are similar to SuperOneClick, and then there is SuperOneClick. I've read that with some updates that this doesn't work and that doesn't work, but then I read conflicting comments and threads that say it did work with this update.
So my question is: what is the easiest, more reversible way to root? I had a really bad experience rooting with my first GSII (had issues with software and then it wouldn't call and then wouldn't unroot and go back to stock) and would really prefer not to flash if possible.
I'm running stock 2.3.4 (for some reason my phone tells me I'm up to date), and I do apologize if I'm restating a question that's already been asked a million times.
Look at the sticky. Will tell you everything
Where's the ban hammer?
Just follow the stickied instructions. There's multiple ways but they all lead to the same thing. A rooted phone.
P.s. I believe entropy has a good thread.

Are they all as easily reversible?
Sorry guys for posting an obvious question.
The best way to root for you is to follow my guide "Installing custom binaries without incrementing the flash counter" (See link in signature)
Follow steps 1 and 2c. That will give you root. It's easy to reverse. Just flash the stock package without root.
If you want custom software, continue on with steps 3 and 4.

This is the route I decided to go with. I had my eyes set on trying out the ICScreweD Rom along with the Siyahkernel but I couldn't get them both to work together using this method for root. I don't know if its just a problem that I'm having or that its just plain out not possible. I'm a noob still so I wouldn't know. I'm currently looking into other root methods so that I can use the Rom and Kernel I mentioned together.
However, using this root method was really simple to use and I recommend it.
The "next generation" scares me because they cant seem to do anything for themselves, always wanting people to do everything for them and they are so impatient.
Thread closed due to several stickys explaining step by step on how to root.

hi guys...please help me with rooting my S2

I am totally noob on this, I'm interested to root my Sgs2.
I don't know what to use and what not, I only know that i've to use odin and s2 root, but it's very difficult for me to choose a kernal or rom or what i dont understand that. I have recently bought my s2 just 1 week back, It's ICS. I'm uploading my s2 information picture.

try the link below for the same ma8, read the op of the link carefully and fallow the instructions to root ur phone successfully
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20075898#post20075898
u will find the matching CF-root kerenl in post 8 of the above thread ,
look for this "CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip" link in the same dwnld that and flash thro ODIN by following the instruction carefully
how will i know what does this give me? I'm looking for more fast speed processor, battery life extended, more access and many more things...
After you've rooted your phone, then you'll be able to flash roms/kernels easily with CWM. Depending on what kernel you choose to flash/use, then you'll be able to look at overclocking (that's what I presume you mean by 'more fast speed processor') & you'll be able to look at 'battery life extended' again depending on whatever kernel you choose to use.
Take your time, and read the CFRoot thread carefully as Sun said.

Do as advised by Sun90, and then look in my sig for the link "You have rooted your phone now what can you do" this is a good starting point, then move on from their. You will have a lot of reading to do, but this will only make sure you have all the right tool and knowledge to do what you need and correctly.
Thanks guys, I'll do that and read it carefully before doing anything to my phone, it's my 1st time and i dont want to break it....
Sorry to ask questions again and again, please understand my problem..
just to confirm guys, If bymistakely i did something wrong my phone break so what can be done??? My warranty will be voided so anything else can be done???
OK. First thing I'm going to say (and please don't take this the wrong way) is this; don't flash anything on your phone (don't root it or flash custom roms/kernels) if you're scared of losing your warranty or bricking your phone.
Rooting your phone or flashing non-stock firmware on it voids your warranty. Plain & simple. No two ways about it. Having said that, if you ever need to send your phone in for warranty service, many people find if they go back to stock firmware & reset the flash counter before sending it in, they do get warranty service; assuming the problem you're sending it in for service for wasn't caused by moisture, accidental damage, etc. In those cases, you won't get warranty service regardless.
But this is never 100% guaranteed, and if you're going to start flashing things on your phone, you should leave any expectations of warranty service at the door.
With regard to your other question about recovering from any problems with flashing, 999 times out of 1000, flashes go smoothly & you won't have any problems. If you do have a problem, as long as you can get into download mode (if the phone won't boot normally), you can often recover it/fix the problem. But you must understand every time you flash something on your phone you run the very small risk of bricking it (and it is a very small risk). That's something we all know (well everyone here should at least) & accept. It's a small price to pay for the freedom/control over your phone rooting/the ability to flash non-stock firmware give you.
If you want root without flashing insecure kernel use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794

well if u follow the instructuions carefully to pinpoint perfection, u will not be into any trouble ma8.
if still the doubt in ur mind then also see this link below

Thanks guys, It's just am worried about it...
I'm now on downloading mode and flashing it...fingers crossed lol
I did that with odin and i go an exclamation mark, but now my phone stuck over there....what to do???? It's not rebooting
Boot into recovery mode & do a wipe/factory reset.
how do i do that?
Dude, you seriously should be reading the Stickies before you do anything with your phone. Volume up/power/home (as opposed to volume down for download mode).
Gotta learn the basics first :-|
I'm really sorry (
i did the volume up buttom home and power, it's coming still the same exclamation mark when i had done that 1st..
Bootloop thread.
I'm doing this Hold down home, power, and volume UP. but it only stucks at the exclamation mark not going further.
Recovery mode - Turn phone off (hold the power button down until the phone switches off. If necessary, remove/replace the battery). At the same time, hold down home, volume up & the power button. This will boot the phone into recovery mode.
Again, flashing stuff on your phone without knowing the bare basics has a funny habit of ending in tears :-|

Root/Unlock Xperia Neo (MT15i)

Hello,
Before you say "use search" function read what I have to say
I have an Xperia Neo for about 1 year but I didn't need to root it or anything, I was happy the way it was, I only did one update since I got it, minus the ICS 4.0.4 update from Sony. But after this updated, I have started to get really annoyed by the bloatware that the firmware comes pre-installed with, seems to me they put on even more stuff with every update, stuff that I really don't use.
So....I decided to root/unlock my phone but I don't have the slightest idea where to begin. I know that I will use flashtool and I already have that, but besides that I have no idea what I need. I've browsed these forums for the past day and I didn't stumble on anything that could help my situation (or lack of knowledge how some might call it).
I also know that I will need to use a "custom" firmware but I'm having a bit of trouble wrapping my head around these facts:
Do I need JUST the firmware?
Do I also need a ROM?
Do I also need a kernel?!
Whats up with these, I mean, I know what a kernel and a ROM and a firmware is, but what exactly do I need to root my phone and what do I have to do? Also, unlocking the bootloader?
Sometimes I wish there's someone out there that compiles a damn guide about these things, something detailed, explaining why he does what he does....or maybe I didn't search enough?
Anyway....any volunteers?
Erm, I will go with "you didn't search good enough" ....and now you can shoot me
Did you notice sticky thread in general section, which is about rooting ICS? If not, I will say you didn't search good enough.
Did you noticed sticky thread in Neo V dev section(yeah, mostly(99%) Neo and Neo V are same)? In one of the sticky thread you have compiled dame guide about these things If not..........
I'm not sure,so I won't blame you for this one but I believe in one of those few sticky threads there is also link to one thread/guide in Arc section, which is also compiled dame guide about these things
Did I miss anything?
Yep, I noticed all those threads, but somehow you missed the point of my thread.
First of all, the sticky thread about rooting ICS in the Neo General Forum is addressed to people who have done this BEFORE, and not people who have no idea where to begin or what do they need.
Second, If I don't know what I need to be able to root my phone safely, why the hell would I even bother looking at other phones? Even if they are the same. That would only increase the chances of me burning the phone because I have no experience with this.
Third, most of the guides I found, are either outdated or refer to specific stuff. I can't believe that Android is so "complicated" to root/unlock or whatever you wanna call it. I owned an iPhone once and it was very easy to unlock and jailbreak.....in like 1 click.
But the problem here is most likely the number of devices that run Android, and that's whats making it harder....
So I'm going to ask again:
What the hell do I need to be able to get this started?
Except flashtool.
What do I need to know? Do I need to have an unlocked bootloader?
And somehow you also missed my point.
Rooting android is mostly 1 click thing. BUT, sometime we need to mess a bit to get it root-ed. I didn't have much play with iPhone, but I'm pretty sure not everything was 1 click, so..
Now we get to one point, you say people who have no idea where to begin, I say read. Read before you start messing with something. I know you hate me now for that, but hey, I did the same thing. I read few days before I get a grip around all android things.
But actually, all you need to know is how to flash kernel in flashtool(actually even simplier, how to flash .ftf file), and how to run .bat file which will do everything.
Let's start with flashtool, in main thread, which you supposed to find by now, there is BIG tutorial how to use flashtool and how to flash with it.
In sticky thread in general section, you even have prepared .ftf files with kernels. So that's a no-brainer
.bat file, I really hope everything is clear about that..
About your questions, you need phone, PC, flashtool, few .ftf's(which can be found in tutorial), tutorial and that's it
It's not hard, aprox. xxxx people done it so far. I doubt they all were Android guru's
About bootloader, you don't need to unlock it just to root your phone. But in the case you would have unlocked BL, things would be easier, a bit.
Now on the job, follow tutorials and ask when you stuck somewhere.
Alright. I'll get on it.
Be back with updates.
Right, first try, managed to unlock the bootloader, root the phone, but messed up at flashing a custom ROM.
I tried installing this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518563
It was only when the install finished when I noticed that the ROM had been discontinued.
My Android version was indeed 4.0.4. but I must have ticked something wrong, somewhere.
At the moment the phone is stuck at the SONY logo without the possibility of getting into CWM.
I have no idea what to do next, but my guess is, start the phone in fastboot and flash back to stock? But I don't know how to do that.
I'm thinking to try the latest Kormatoes ROM and Kernel but he doesn't post any installation instructions :/

Fixed.
Used "fastboot" to flash a new kernel that had CWM on. Got into CWM but couldn't mount the SD card so I used
"adb push" while in recovery to transfer new ROM to sdcard, then installed the new rom and its over. After nearly 5 hours. lol

[Q] Cyanogenmod installation

Hiya,
I've got a rooted 4.2.1 Samsung GS3 GT-i9300 network locked to Orange and I want to install cyanogenmod, I know exactly how to
but I'm scared.
I've got a friend (even more nood than I am) he installed Cyanogenmod for GS2 on his S4 (lol) bricked it.
(But I obviously know not to do that )
Anyway,
I'm just scared of the whole idea of bricking the phone.
What would be the worst case scenario of I do everything right?
I have previously installed a custom rom on a tablet, but that only was because I got instructions from the guy next to me.
I know exactly how to install the rom but what could I expect?

The easiest way to ensure nothing goes wrong and to gain confidence is to read, and make sure you understand the procedures you are following (Then go back and re-read, and make sure you really understand the procedure this way you can be confident in yourself ). That being said the first thing you will need to do since you are already rooted is to flash Clockworkmod Recovery on your Galaxy S3 which you will then use to flash Cyanogenmod, a video tutorial on how to flash Clockworkmod Recovery can be found here. Once you have successfully installed Clockworkmod Recovery then you can download Cyanogenmod 10.2 and follow the instructions to install it found in this thread. Make sure you read and re-read everything in that first post in the thread I linked to before you install Cyanogenmod. As far as what could go wrong the likelyhood of you hard-bricking your device is small. Most likely the worst thing that could happen is you could soft-brick the device and need to use Odin to re-flash the stock ROM on your device. Overall there is always risk of bricking your device as that is the nature of modifying devices, but as long as you read, re-read, and re-read again all the instructions and comprehend them you will be fine, confidence my friend you got this :good:. And by all means if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask.
