[Q] Cyanogenmod installation - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hiya,
I've got a rooted 4.2.1 Samsung GS3 GT-i9300 network locked to Orange and I want to install cyanogenmod, I know exactly how to
but I'm scared.
I've got a friend (even more nood than I am) he installed Cyanogenmod for GS2 on his S4 (lol) bricked it.
(But I obviously know not to do that )
Anyway,
I'm just scared of the whole idea of bricking the phone.
What would be the worst case scenario of I do everything right?
I have previously installed a custom rom on a tablet, but that only was because I got instructions from the guy next to me.
I know exactly how to install the rom but what could I expect?

The easiest way to ensure nothing goes wrong and to gain confidence is to read, and make sure you understand the procedures you are following (Then go back and re-read, and make sure you really understand the procedure this way you can be confident in yourself ). That being said the first thing you will need to do since you are already rooted is to flash Clockworkmod Recovery on your Galaxy S3 which you will then use to flash Cyanogenmod, a video tutorial on how to flash Clockworkmod Recovery can be found here. Once you have successfully installed Clockworkmod Recovery then you can download Cyanogenmod 10.2 and follow the instructions to install it found in this thread. Make sure you read and re-read everything in that first post in the thread I linked to before you install Cyanogenmod. As far as what could go wrong the likelyhood of you hard-bricking your device is small. Most likely the worst thing that could happen is you could soft-brick the device and need to use Odin to re-flash the stock ROM on your device. Overall there is always risk of bricking your device as that is the nature of modifying devices, but as long as you read, re-read, and re-read again all the instructions and comprehend them you will be fine, confidence my friend you got this :good:. And by all means if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Getting My S2 Later And I Wanna Flash CM9 to it

hey there xda members.. im gonna get my s2 later and its on ics already, i have downloaded the file cm-9.1.0-galaxys2.zip..
now i dont know what is the steps for flash it.. i dont wanna brick my device ><
do i flash a rooted kernel with cwm added then reboot to cwm and flash the zip file?
Follow the instructions on the first page of the CM9 discussion thread to the letter & you'll be fine. Use the n00b proof Odin method & you won't need to do anything to your phone beforehand.
Re: bricking your device, if the possibility of same scares you, leave your phone stock & enjoy it. Flashing always encompasses a very small risk of bricking the phone (the number of bricks we see on here every week is testimony to that, despite what some people here might tell you).
However, if you follow instructions to the letter & take your time/learn/read you should be fine.

so the CM9 Resurrection Edition is like flashing stock rom to my s2 but its the custom rom cm9?
Correct. As I said, read that thread, everything you need to know is there.
If it were me, I wouldn't be doing anything to the phone until I'd read thoroughly/understood the first page of that thread so I had the process down pat, then read the last 10/20 pages to get an idea of what the current build is like.

[Q] Advise on rooting with SDS for GS3 at large

I need advise on whether I should root my GS3 and thinking of flashing CM10.1 or just wait to see if the Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) passes my device.
Thing is I'm afraid to void my warranty. Not a big deal but a warranty is always good to have. What's your advise on this matter?
Also, total noob question, what would be the easiest way to root and flash CM10.1? It isn't exactly a one click process like jailbreaking an iPhone and this is my first Android powered device so yeah.
What advise u need ?
Got my SIII yesterday open the box used this toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488 to root and flash CWM and then Omega Rom, All the process took me approx 30 Mins including the Rom DL.
if u want to return the phone for warranty u can always flash the Stock Rom.
Hope i helped.

Well rooting and flashing custom rom doesn't seem to be as safe as jailbreaking an iPhone. I can't seem to find threads for CM10.1 and how stable that ROM is. I am still feeling insecure in rooting and all that.
The flashing stock rom is also a bit foreign to me! Where do I get stock rom? and if I root there will be that system modified thing on Samsung phones right? it's all these things that makes me think twice..

Read the BASICS before you start .
Flashing and root are not risk free its your choice .
Risk is vastly increased by refusing to read/follow instructions .Millions of safe flashes by XDA members .

I've gotten myself into a bit of a problem now. I used ChainFire's exynos exploit patch a while back and I am unable to get root when trying to use heimdall. I'm on a Mac so that was the first thing that came up. Ideas?
PS. Heimdall says it worked perfectly but when I go into recovery, it's androids recovery with a red triangle thin in the centre. I'm now not rooted, and system says I'm modified. So I'm screwed left and right. No CWM Recovery, no SuperSU, and I'm flat out of ideas. I though turning on USB debugging would help but sadly didn't. I don't even know how to reverse the process to have my system status showing normal too!
Damn this...all because of stupid me patching

[Q] Installing CM10 on Telus Note with Mac

I'm pretty eager to get Google Now on my ICS Telus Note i717, so thinking I'll take the plunge and get a JB rom running on the thing.
Im pretty much scared s**tless that I'm going to turn my phone into a brick, and found this guide on the CM10 website.
It says not to even bother rooting the stock firmware, and just throw ClockworkMod on it with Heimdall in boot mode, and then install CM10 through that.
I had a couple of questions before I get started and was hoping a genius or 2 would take pity.
Without the root, will CM10 be able to even run Google Now? I'm assuming yes as its JB, but half of this is foreign language to me.
What are the likelyhoods of bricking the device when following these instructions meticulously?
Does the fact I'm on Telus and use LTE even matter/affect the result?
I know I could refer to the instructions given on XDA, but fear they are a little hard to follow, especially as I only have access to Mac (which is what is so appealing about this page's instructions)
This is the guide:

Any help would be much appreciated. Take pity!!!

Help a Hopeless, Please!

Where to start? Well we can start by saying that I am a fool. I won from my uncle his Galaxy S2 (GT-i9100), but wanted to upgrade to version 4.2. It is a phone bought in Latin America branded by Claro. He had UHKI4 Kernel and system android 2.3.4 (if I remember correctly). So I rooted the device using the method of Odin3 v1.85 with CF-Root-Kernel-v4.1-SGS2_UH_MUL_KG7 CWM4. The root was ok!
I went into recovery mode and tried to follow the steps of this video /watch?v=ezuW5qFS8-w. I used the I9100VJMS4_I9100ZTAMS4_ZTA rom. But something went wrong and my phone is stuck in recovery mode CWC. Cant boot, I dont know how to flash anyhing...I need help, I wonder if it is possible to recover the phone yet and if possible put the kernel back and remove the root ... summarizing back to the original.
I appreciate if any help was as detailed as possible. And thank since now everyone who read the topic. Sorry for english errors
Well I am hopeless :crying:
Well I managed to restore a backup :fingers-crossed:, I'm actually pretty dumb . I downloaded a firmware instead of a ROM (you can laugh now) .
But I still doubt. Let's think in two hypothetical situations below:
1 - I would like to upgrade from version 2.3.4 to 4.0 or 4.2. And put a custom ROM or Stock
2 - I would go back to the original kernel and unroot.
How to proceed in each case?
Glad you got it working again. Now that you have it working and not in such a panic, you should do some reading. Someone telling you how to do things like that will never work out, you'll always be relying on others to do whatever modifications you are currently attempting. By reading and learning about it, you'll be able to do it all for yourself. So how to proceed in each case? Research & learn about each one. Both are legitimate things to do, and there are plentiful threads/guides on each.
Sent from my GT-I9100: Powered by Dorimanx, running RootBox
1.use a pc
2.use cwm
Lol
Well, I could do what I wanted. Thanks for the reply Hopper8. After I calmed down I could organize ideas. And thanks for the detailed answer theunderling lol
No problem....any time

[root][twrp] need an up-to-date guide

I owned an i9100 back in the days, had some fun with it, but then it died. Now i got in possesion of another i9100 and can't seem to find anything i remember doing, like rooting and flashing recovery via odin. Also there are some dead links and things i cannot understand in guides i've seen. I did not quite focuse on them, just took a look, but there was nothing like "flash this and that via odin".
I've seem something called heimdall(?) in the twrp 3.3.x.x guide (is that the alternative to odin?)
The S2 is running on lastest stock JB. How do i get it rooted and flash recovery?
