[Q] How to install a new rom - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new to rooting. I got a desire hd. If I want to install an updated version of custom rom. What is the procedure? Do i have to perform a full wipe like flashing a new rom? i use icecoldsandwich which recommend avoiding system restore. if so how do i keep my apps and data

If you are updating an existing ROM, then wiping cache and Dalvik is sufficient, though I prefer to also wipe system. If you are changing ROMs, then it is good practice to wipe data, system, cache, and Dalvik (aka clean install)
Sent from my Nexus 7

If you've got, for example, CM9, upgrading from 9.0.x -> 9.0.x, wipe cache & Dalvik cache.
If 9.0.x -> 9.1.x, it's best to wipe everything & start from scratch.

Click the Link in My Signature for Instructions for Flashing a Rom.

If you are updating a ROM of the same version class, for eg: A nightly version from CM10, It is enough to wipe Dalvik and cache. Moreover the ROM maker also puts in whether you need to perform a full wipe or a half wipe, do take note of that.

thanks i got it. for minor update i can do dirty flash. but when there's new release version i have to full wipe is that correct
11. Open market, and install apps. If you use Titanium Backup DO NOT RESTORE System Apps or Data. Try not to restore Data for any app. If you restore an app like games and such, just restore the app.

Does this mean I can restore games progress?? I check my 4ext recovery and i can only restore boot, system, data and cache. how do i restore app

Opinions differ about this.
I always restore apps and their data using TB.
TB will not back up the app of system applications, but it will let you back up their data.
I backup a number of system items using TB. Here's a screenshot:

Sorry about that , forgot that if your browsing in the mobile app you can't see Sigs. But anyway I've attached the link below. I would advise against doing a " Dirty Flash " it can cause phantom issues. As for restoring Apps with TB, it is a great tool if used correctly. Restoring App Data from Games should not be an issue. But at all costs avoid restoring System Apps, and Data.

fyi, when you restore data, it negates the fact that you wiped it, also dalvik is in data. If you're going to restore, there'e really no need to wipe first (except maybe cache), since the restore process actually first wipes each partition being restored. Then it restores it.
quite honestly, i thought that i experienced this issues when my phone was stock.
cant really remember though. i know my original EVO had these same issues. I'm starting to think that the HTC dialer is faulty.
i will wipe everything and then...reflash the ROM. I wont restore any data and i will see how it goes.
just out of curiosity... where is the nandroid backup and all that kept? i made one before i rooted. ALso, I've been wanting to format my sd card, even though it has nothing to do with this issue im sure.

Installing Cyan, the wrong way.

I'm getting fed up with this phone fairy tale!
What I did.
1. Complete stock recovery.
2. Intalled CWM Recovery.
3. Rooted with SuperOneClick.
4. Install ROM Manager.
5. Download and install Nightly #115.
6. Get this for all the trouble.

When I enter recovery mode I see "ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.3" so it appears that CWM Recovery was a success, but installing Nightly was a disaster.
Anyone who would possibly assist my on this journey to get Nightly #115 and have my phone working properly?
* UPDATE 1: Installed Cyan through recovery, now the Cyan skateboard guy appears over and over again.
Have you executed all available "format" in recovery? Maybe you should mount and format everything except SD card, do a full wipe, and reflash the rom and full wipe again, all in the same CWM session. That's what I instinctively would do, and I never get the sort of problem that you describe...
You should also try another rom

have you tried clearing data then flashing twice?
Sent from my GT-I9100
Clear all data, flash the ROM twice in a row, without restarting.
Start fresh, download chosen rom > flash cf-root (already rooted and has cwm recovery) > follow tutorial to remove triangle (optional) > flash selected cyanogenmod build (follow instructions CAREFULY) > happines

I managed to install the Cyanogen, finally. Thanks for that.
But I don't understand what all the fuzz as about, so far.
When I installed Cyan on my Desire from the stock, I noticed dramatic changes, literally mind blowing - but install Cyan from the stock I feel like the phone has more "lag" and slower all over.
I'm guessing I screwed something up again..
I just wanted to let you know that the "poor" performance was due to ADW launcher, installed LauncherPro and the phone is smoother than ever.
Only problems I'm facing right now is poor 3G performance, phone tends to get VERY hot and bad battery performance with brand new battery that used to last 1-2 days.
Few additional specs if those could help you figure out something.

Have you installed BetterBatteryStats (free for xda-members) to see if there is any rouge process that devours battery, for example mediaserver? That can go totaly bonkers, but can be solved.
I'll check that out, I just bought a XDA membership - how can I apply for the BetterBatteryStats app?
Sorry for taking so long before answering. If you are logged in to XDA then you can download the app in the main thread of BetterBatteryStats: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
And off course you could buy it in Android Market if you want to support the developer.

[Q] What does Titanium Backup classify as "system apps"?

Can someone explain this to me? I've done a search and read through the Titanium Backup FAQ and guide and am still a little unclear
I currently have ver. 1.0 of a ROM on my phone. I use Titanium Backup to do a full backup.
I do a clean wipe and install ver. 1.5 of a ROM on my phone. If I use Titanium Backup and do a full restore of "missing apps + system apps+, will Titanium Backup overwrite any changes that were made between v1.0 and v1.5 of the ROM?
Should I be doing a missing app restore on the clean ROM and then just manually configuring all the other system settings / homescreens? If that's the case, is there any way to specifically backup the homescreen configuration? I'd like to do a clean wipe between all ROM installs, but sometimes it's a PITA to set up all the folders and homescreens again.
Thanks!
don't restore system apps. system apps reside in /system/app and usually are replaced only when you flash a rom. so you could overwrite rom updates with an older version.
Any suggestions for backing up homescreen configurations without having to switch to an aftermarket launcher?

What's the name of the application that holds the data? I can't find any app listed under "desktop" in Titanium Backup. Am I missing something?

Thanks...added that one too. It never bothered me too much not having those on a new wipe, but now that I know how to do it, I'll keep them all.

I have parse error on my device(GB-70)

Sorry for my bad english.
I'm using GB-70, which is Korean version of G-70(Galaxy Player 5.0).
I flashed CM10(last nightly) today and found that I can't install any APKs. Of course I checked Security/Unknown Source. But I still can't install any APKs.
Was there any problem while I flashed CM10? These are what I did :
1. wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache.
2. flash CM9.
3. wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache.
4. flash CM10.
5. Reboot.
6. I found that I didn't wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache.
7. So I wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache.
8. Reboot.
9. Still have problem installing APKs.
What should I do in order to install APKs? It makes me so crazy...
PS. I upload pictures of 'my phone'. I think it might help. Since I didn't make any change on build.prop, it says I'm using G-70. But I'm using GB-70.

have you tried wiping system. i doubt it would do anything but its worth a shot
just wipe system
flash rom
flash gapps
reboot
now if these are apps that have been illegally obtained, then we are not going to help you.
you could also be trying to install 4.2.2 apks on 4.1.2 which wont work.
also for future questions please post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283877
What apps?

First, You should read the complete op of cm thread carefully.
You better download the latest build and flash.
Gapps should be flashed right after the cm before restart.

Regarding backup, I personally don't recommend using device manufacturer's native backup software as it may not work on other custom os like cm, so I suggest you use another third-party backup and restore software available on Google play which may work on almost every variants of os.
The one I use is "sms backup & restore"
Sent from my KIW-L21 using Tapatalk
I also use SMS Backup & Restore and have been for a long time. It works well and keeps your messages in an XML that you can leave on the SD card or back up to a cloud service. For apps, I generally don't recommend restoring their data across ROMs (particularly going between stock and custom) but Titanium Backup or the App Manager within Rom Toolbox should do the job just fine.
I cannot get titanium backup pro key so i cannot restore my backup from it
