Please help with unlocked gsm photon - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi all, I was able to unlock the baseband, root the phone etc, but the gsm is still not working. I have two questions.
Firstly what is a good gsm rom, the ones i've tried dont have gsm in the network connection section, just cdma, unlike the stock rom. a link would help.
Second the radio, I tried flashing the japanese rom radio but when I add a custom rom, the baseband is n_01.28.07r.
How should I proceed?

most roms have a GSM fix file to go along with it so you can just use it right away with no modding. if you go into the dialer and dial *#*#info#*#* > phone information > go to the drop down menu half way down. > select GSM. then you should have working GSM. at least you should.

The method I've been using is that all-in-one pack from someone, I can't remember who posted it at this moment, but the process goes like this:
1) Go back to pure stock 2.3.4 with the SBF using RSD
2) Root it with the AIO root tool
3) Flash the derpunlock.sbf to unlock the bootloader - it'll fail, which is normal, so when it does it's ok to yank the battery - as long as you see UNLOCKED when you boot the phone, it's unlocked from that point on
4) Install the CWM recovery using moto-fastboot
5) Flash the KDDI radio with CWM
6) Do a full wipe (cache/data/system, easiest fastest way is flash the FULL_WIPE thing)
7) Flash whatever ROM/gapps you want
8) Flash the GSM fix or the GSM fix w/tweaks (there's a few different ones depending on carrier that I know of, I use T-Mobile so just the basic one - that's if the ROM doesn't already offer the option like Th3Bill's newest CM one does, the jokersax one, has the ROM_OPTIONS thing to flash and set that)
You HAVE to flash the GSM fix if one exists RIGHT THEN AND THERE before you reboot and start the ROM the first time - learned that the hard way myself. If you boot into the ROM then realize you forgot to do the GSM fix, you can't just flash that and think it'll work because it doesn't. It must be flashed with the ROM before you boot into the ROM the first time. At least that's how it works for me as someone clued me in when I asked why it wasn't working. All 8 steps above generally have to be followed if you're just going to a new GB/ICS/JB ROM, but if you just flashing ROMs after you've already done the stock (if you did it), then you have to remember to do the GSM fix before you boot into the ROM you just flashed for the first time. Can't do it after...
That should get you running with GSM and data, if it doesn't, use the *#*#4636#*#* and see what mode the radio is in, set it for GSM only (PRL) if it's not already set that way, then hit Menu and make sure to tap Enable data connection at least one time. If it still doesn't kick in, go to the home screen, Menu - Settings - Wireless networks - Mobile networks and make sure the data connection is enabled. On GB ROMs you may need to tap Menu one more time to get the ability to enable the data connection - ICS and JB ROMs have the checkbox there for you, as well as the 2G mode thing too.
Least that's how I've been working this all out myself.

Are you unable to make or receive calls? What ROM were you running before flashing GSB? Did you do a full data wipe before flashing GSB?

FYI if this helps, or even if it doesn't, you can see the MEID number underneath the battery. I find that you usually have to use the HEX version on Verizon's website. I don't know if this will help you, however, because flashing ROMs does not affect activation status.
Is this the number you're looking for?

i was running the factory default phone, i wiped everything and flashed the rom i linked on it, i can receive calls, voicmails, texts, mms, the internet is fine, but its not connecting to the towers near me, its picking up off different towers and the person at verizon said i need to change the SID number to 30730 which i know what one to change and i know where it is, i just cant access that part of the phone to change it because i dont know what program number to use.
flash the official RUU and start fresh possibly can fix the problem and re-root then flash new rom

To my knowledge, the ROMs do not alter any activation state of the phone* - that stuff is held in a hidden partition (the "mfg" partition, I suspect) in the flash memory chip that are never touched by any of the usual ROM flashing operations. That's why you can change ROMs and maintain the same activation and PRL data from ROM to ROM. So, I don't know why your phone's tower association would have changed if was working correctly before flashing a developer ROM.
*The only exception to this is if you perform a factory reset with the stock recovery on the phone - that does clear the activation state of the phone. The "factory reset/wipe data" menu entry of the custom recovery doesn't touch activation data or PRLs, though.
If that's what happened, then you might have to temporarily revert to a stock ROM - just don't use the factory reset procedure on the stock ROM before you re-root the phone. (BTW, you could certainly use the March 2011 OTA stock ROM - installing it won't overwrite your custom recovery, so you can simply do a nandroid backup/restore to get back to your current setup - no need to "re-root" if you do that.)
There's probably something I don't understand about the situation you are describing, unless it has something to do with towers that were acquired from a different carrier (Alltel?) by Verizon - under normal circumstances, your phone would prefer to connect to the best signal within it's home network, assuming that there are not other problems that prevent that from happening (such as call congestion through a certain tower). Perhaps the towers you want to connect to are actually considered to be "roaming" by the PRL you have on your phone, and that's why the more distant VZW towers are chosen?

i will try this but before i do i'll try to explain a bit more, when i call the normal eris programming number, it tries to actually make a call instead of giving me the option to go into edit mode, now when im on the stock rom i can do it but as soon as i flash any other rom on it, it doesnt allow me to do so. i had a rom from a droid 2 on it and when i used the droid 2 programming number it worked just fine and i could edit the info. hope this helps clarify a bit, and thanks for the help

^This sentence confuses the crap out of me. I read it 5 or 6 times, and have no idea what sequence of operations you performed. I only have a vague idea that you can't get something to work.
If you can't access the EPST menu, how can you see what the settings are?
Here is what everybody has said so far (basically the same thing, but in different ways) :
- The EPST menus are generally not available in custom ROMs, especially any of the AOSP (Froyo/Gingerbread) ROMs. You need a stock, or near-stock ROM to be guaranteed that they will be available
- The same thing is true of "secret dial code menus". They don't exist in custom ROMs, unless those custom ROMs are nearly identical to stock ROMs (that is, directly derived from a stock ROM).
If you want to try it, you can flash either a RUU or PB00IMG.zip file - these operations flash a "nvram" file (*.nb0), which conceivably resets PRL and other non-ROM settings. After doing that, and fooling with EPST using a stock ROM, you will need to re-root.
As I mentioned, you should not run a "factory reset" procedure on your phone after you have configured what you want (with EPST) when there is a STOCK recovery on the phone.
Beyond that, I'm sort of mystified why you are unsatisfied with a phone that appears to be working normally. (What application are you using to determine cell phone tower? Are you inferring that from location services (Google Maps) with GPS and WiFi location services turned off?)

[Q] [Help][Stock AT&T 2.3.4 Build 4.5.91]No network after *#*#4636#*#* > USA Band
Hi guys! Plz help.
I have AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G. Its SIM Unlocked and Bootloader Unlocked as well.
System version: 4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US
Android version: 2.3.4
I am using this mobile phone in India and had no problem at all with 2G and 3G networks.
Today I was going through *#*#4636#*#* > Phone Information > Menu > Select radio band > and selected USA Band accidentally. Thereafter I have no GSM network. I tried manual searching of networks and did a Erase data/factory reset in CWM recovery but had no luck. I tried to restore an earlier backup also but due to MD5 Sum Mismatch error I couldn't do it.
Please help me getting my mobile working again. Is there something which can reset radio frequencies of the phone? Any idea what should I do now?
Thanks you so much for your help.
Hey there!
I had same issue a while ago and didn't have unlocked bootloader back then.
I simply re-flashed stock firmware from this thread and everything worked fine. If you do this then make sure you chose right one (For you first one should be right), If you downgrade to 2.2.x you will hard brick your device. Just keep that in mind.
By the way now I'm using [CM7 ROM][24/12] --> Neutrino ROM 1.4-S <-- [53mb] and there in settings you can choose whatever band you like unlike in stock AT&T firmware from *#*#4636#*#* you can chose only USA Band. There must be other roms what support this feature too.
I'm sure there are other ways to fix this issue but this is from my expierence.
Good luck!
PS I did that in first week when I had Atrix and it was my first android device. I managed to fix it, I'm sure you will fix it too

Hi mm166,
Thank you so much for your reply and I do think a re-flash only can fix my mobile. Since I have Bootloader Unlocked so I think I can't use SBF method to flash stock 2.3.4 and I can only go for fruitcakes. I am now downloading ATT 2.3.4 Build 4.5.91 fruitcake and I hope it will fix my mobile
I am woundering if flashing ATT radio .91 from following link will reset the files responsible for holding network settings and can fix my mobile ... but I am not sure so can't go for it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009
Update:
I just flashed "2.3.4 System and Boot NO Webtop (Updated Newest Script)" fruitcake after Clear Data/Cache/Factory Reset but still no network
I think I have lost my mobile just because of accidentally setting to USA Band.
Any help please!!!!!
Well, I'm still newbie on Android devices. I'm not very long with Android device but I'll try give you few advices. Keep in mind that I could be somewhere wrong:
I think new script: [Batch/Script] MFBSR - Moto-Fastboot: Stock Restore could help. Worth trying. Fruitcake didn't restore everything.
I used RSD SBF flash and I think it doesn't matter if bootloader is unlocked or not (maybe someone could confirm that?) if you flash same firmware but that's somewhat risky (better don't try this). But I did that and everything worked great.
Other way to fix network issue could be flashing custom rom. For example this. I added screenshot from settings. Edit: No, I think I'm wrong. That's not right thing.
Solved!!!
Hi mm166, thank you so much for your reply
Before reading your message I did a trick and it worked for me. I just flashed ATT Basband/Radio N_01.77.36P FruitCake through Rom Racer's CWM and after reboot my phone was able to find network as it should be
Since my phone's BL was unlocked so I was not supposed to try SBF flashing to prevent it from hard brick. And, just flashing Stock ROM FruitCake was not resetting its radio settings i guess ... and flashing particularly above mentioned radio files just replaced the older one and once again my Atrix started to breath
I hope this may work for other guys too who are facing same kinda problem of not getting network after accidentally setting the radio to USA Band. But a Full Wipe/Factory Rest/Data/Cash/Dalvik Cache Wipe is needed.

[Q] TELUS Note lost LTE after ROM change

Hi,
First post on XDA so bare with me on this.
Have flashed my TELUS Note 717D with a few different ROM's over the last few days. With the news that Sammy will be pushing out official ICS in the next week or so I am trying to get my Note A$S back to stock including the correct radio file.
This is where I have come unstuck. I have all the correct files but for some reason I can't get my LTE back. Yes it was working prior to my loading new ROM's and also after I went testing. Had the soft bricking issue yesterday & managed to get that resolved but since then no LTE nada.
Loaded the full TELUS recovery (found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585440 ) and then the TELUS kernel.
Still no LTE. I have the GB & ICS radio files & now can’t get the recover to load any zip files as I get a error at the first screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mike
I went thru this yesterday... i
I flashed the ATT stock rom/system from these boards, then downloaded the three part Telus file..when assembled its about 1 Gb...
After flashing ATT, I cleared dalvik, flashed the Telus stock.. Then i did a factory reset, and i was back.
I'm still running a non stock modem file.. But all is functioning.
Sent from my SGH-I717D using XDA
getting LTE now?
Everything is working but the lack of LTE is missing.
I am in downtown Vancouver & out address has a in building LTE system so coverage is not a problem.
Can you confiem that you have LTE? do you have the isp.telus.com apn too?
Mike
still having issues
I can flash the AT&T ROM with no problems using odin. when I reboot into recovery I am getting a error that wont allow me to use the power button and select the reset option.
The power button works because I can press and hold to reboot the phone but the white triangle with ! mark is in the moddle of the screen. With out that I am unable to do the resetting & clearing of the cache.
Any thoughts?

Yeah.. Unfortunately my skillset definitely into the "knows just enough to be dangerous" category..
What 'recovery' is currently in the phone? Stock recovery? A CWM type recovery? I ask because I had an issue once previously where the power button wouldn't let me select items.. but I was able to use one of the four soft buttons on the bottom front of the phone to execute the same command. Once it was the 'home' button.. on my current recovery software it's the search button oddly enough.
What happens when, from the phone dialpad after a normal boot, you key : *#2263# ?
Do you get the Band preference menu?
What's selected? What happens if you pick 4 (LTE) and then 7 (LTE ALL) ?
And have you done a factory reset on the phone after any of these flashes? (I didn't see where you had so I askl)
Lastly -- in the SETTINGS / WIRELESS & NETWORK / MOBILE NETWORKS menu.. do you have "NETWORK MODE" menu item that the stock Canadian i717 device has the AT&T device does not?
I'll add here as a postscript.. it may not matter ... if the update includes an updated radio file.. all this worrying over it may not much matter once the update comes?
knoxster said:

I have CWM v5.5.0.4 installed which works but wont let me installed the radio file. Bombs out with errors.
When I flash the TELUS stock GB Kernel, I get the standard recovery which wont even let me see the radio file.
What happens when, from the phone dialpad after a normal boot, you key : *#2263# ?
I thought this was a At&t thing only? But that said I did try to the number and got a recorded annc saying that is was not a valid number.
Do you get the Band preference menu?
Yes I have the correct options and its set to use all the HSPA types & LTE too.

Yes I did the reset to factory in CWM after the At&t ROM flash and after I loaded the TELUS ROM too. I did had to load a different kernel to allow the CWM recovery but then installed the TELUS stock kernel after.

Well, I have the same CWM .. I can't flash any of the supposedly flashable CWM modem files.. errors out part way thru. Weird.
I'm uploading my Telus Stock image that I used to Google drive.. I'll pm you the link once its up.
Sent you the links.
Also -- I managed to get the Bell Radio CWM file loaded on my Telus device from the thread located in this forum. (STOCK BELL thread)
There is now a Rogers stock thread and hopefully they'll have a Telus thread that will have a modem file that loads as well as the Bell one did. I can't imagine the differences are that great.
success
we have LTE!!!
Huge thanks for your help here. Flashing the BELL LTE radio file has now enabled the LTE in my telus note.
A little embarrassing as I work at telus but shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
XDA Dev site is the best for anything Andriod.

Yay!... See? Occasionally the blond leading the blind .. something good can come from it!
Plus I managed to get my modem back to stock as well .. I was using that T769 modem that was tweaked for Note use.. and all the Telus CWM modem files I would try to flash in ...just errored out.
I talk to Rogers and apparently there's the 401 sim that's not lte capable. They told me to go back to the store to get the 403 sim with lte capable, maybe that should help fix the problem. I'll give an update tmr once I get the new sim.
Does anyone know where I can find the Rogers radio or modem file? I found the radio but it says installation aborted when I try to flash CWM. I flash the Rogers modem file and the log shows me a installation success but it's i717M which is Bell, not Rogers. Can anyone give me a proper Rogers working link? also, apparently Radio and Modem is the same thing, it's just people playing with words, or I'm I getting it wrong? Thank you.

Here is the link to the Rogers Modem, http://www.mediafire.com/?ol9yzmmjx8uayh5
you can always flash your modem using adb to push the back to the phone just follow this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506212
Thanks guys. I'll stick with the .zip files to flash in CWM for now as I'm not comfortable with adb yet. One missing letter and it can fail to boot or whatever...

[Q] install_recovery.sh lost, is there a copy to D/L

My network settings switched to gsm, they should be "cdma", im sprint cust and live in US. Ill change setting back to cdma, as soon as I back out 1 screen then go back in the setting will have auto changed back to gsm. I tried to do a recovery and phone would not load recovery (fail). I have found out that the install_recovery.sh file is nowhere on the phone. I just tried unlocking bootloader which was successful and then flashed cwm 5.0.2.7photon3 and sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-198-7-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US. Also cleared phone a few times and anyway booted up then and it was still auto switching itself to gsm after Id change it to cdma. Im stumped, could anyone help me, or does any1 possibly have idea what might be causing this. I also tried flashing radio from "halfevildruid" thread, that did not work either. PLEASE HELP, WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE THANKS. I hope I posted in correct place, sorry if not. I looked around for quite awhile so it would be in correct place.

Select "Phone information"
scroll down to "Select preferred network type" and select CDMA Auto (PRL)
Reboot
Q-In settings/about phone what is you PRL?
Q-Which radio did you flash?
Also install_recovery.sh removes CWM on every reboot and replaces it with stock recovery. So do you want a locked phone or unlocked phone? If you want unlocked then you do not want install_recovery.sh.
Have you tried to flash the stock sbf and starting over?
Lokifish Marz I will get info and post back shortly, thanks for the quick reply.

Also install_recovery.sh removes CWM on every reboot and replaces it with stock recovery. So do you want a locked phone or unlocked phone? If you want unlocked then you do not want install_recovery.sh.

Thanks you for the reply Lokifish,
I hope I am replying back the correct way ( hitting the quote button), anyways I have now got the cm 9 6282012 installed on phone and seems to be working good except my phone is still set on gsm and when Im going to apn's there is no info there it is blank. I went into phone info #*#*4636*#*# and change the setting to "cdma auto prl" and reboot the phone and its still on gsm. I have noticed something in the forums, should I flash the beta 3.1 cm9 file? (which I have not done, but I have flashed the gapps file though) and if so should that be done after flashing the cm9 6282012?
by the way im running cm9 and I go into settings/ about phone/ I don't find any prl. nor do I find it in the *#*#4636#*#* either. Would greatly appreciate any help please
still stuck

Thanks for the reply As far as I know I had thought that this was the original SBF, do you know if that is correct?
1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-198_6-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US.sbf Anyways I had tried this file but didn't have any luck.
As of now I have cm9 installed and running except for my sprint cdma network, I do have wifi. but in apn settings it is just blank.
I have a question along the same line. I recently rooted my mopho, keep having an issue installing bootstrap recovery. It seems to continually load when I try to install recovery. Also superuser keeps denying access to system recovery install. Idk if it had to do with the continually loading or if it's a separate issue. I even went in and allowed access with no help still. I'm tring to keep 4g, so I'm staying locked for the time being. Just such a pain, coming from htc evo 4g & 3D.... Never again will I buy moto. Should have done some research before buying. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Provisioning

Can someone help me understand provisioning for this phone? If I flash a custom ROM the Update PRL / Update Profile buttons are missing. I also tried ##MSL# and that doesn't do anything. I'm trying to update my settings so that the phone works with Ringplus. Is there some trick?

You will get a better response and answer in the Q&A, HELP & TROUBLESHOOTING section.
I would suggest reverting back to stock to activate your phone with Ringplus and then flashing to the newest Rom/kernel.
I think I have seen your post in a few Android N roms so be sure to flash the correct GApps(Arm and 7.1.1) and the ZVC Modem just to be sure.
all stock Sprint/Boost roms should give you the settings back....those settings seem to be added either by LG or Sprint...so it would be neigh impossible to add them to AOSP/CM roms
I am in the same boat. But your case might be different. You can try:
Carrier Reset:
##72786# (##SCRTN#)
or *#*#72786#*#*
If that doesn't work, do Factory reset from Recovery. If you use TWRP, default is wipe = factory reset. After that reboot and wait 5-10min for update. I think it will kick off only if your phone idle during that time. This seems to work if I flashed 7.1 ROM
Hope it helps.
