Will not power on at all.. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My S3 was functional when I plugged it into the charger and went to bed last night, woke up at around 8 am, checked my emails and went back to sleep. When I woke back up the phone was in a powered down state (still hooked up to the charger). From that point on it has not powered back up at all, no logo, nothing.
I have tried pulling the battery, hooking it up to computer, trying to power up with just charger and no battery and everything else I can think of. Anyone face a situation like this or is my phone dead?

Try that
Plug off from charger pull battery out.
Take a coin and hold it on every contact from the battery contatcs of your phone.
All metal pins the same time
Hold the coin a few seconds on all pins.
Relese the coin plug in the charger. Than the battery and try to power on

Tried, didn't work.. I think it's completely dead, not sure why though or how

You should try using a different battery

Yeah ^^ .. try getting a new battery. It doesn't happen very often but your battery could be toast.

Have you tried booting into recovery and doing a factory reset?
Had a similar random problem on my sgs1 & sgs3 and that got me back in.
(Recovery = Volume up + home + power button)

Should probably add that each time I had the same problem I had let the battery run out completely. Phone just appeared dead after an overnight charge and would not boot other than in recovery.

[Q] White LED light

My photon seems to have turned off and wont turn back on, when i plug up it only shows a white LED light, its been doing this for over an hour, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Try a battery pull. Try booting into recovery.

I tried but nothing seems to work
Pull Battery, Press and hold power and vol+ button with battery out. Hold for 30 seconds, install battery and wall plug and try to power up.
:/ still no luck, just has the white led light come on
Check the manual for the force reboot thins. I know the Xoom has one but I don't know about the photon. Worst case you try random button combinations!

This actually just started happening to me an hour ago. I plug in my phone every morning to charge it like normally...nothing, no charge, just a white led. I battery pull, still nothing. I unplug the charger, switch to a different wall socket, secure all the connections, it started charging. So I'm guessing a white led while the phone is off means bad connection, or bad battery.
Try a different charger or outlet before you go out and buy a new battery.
Same thing happened to me the phone required a battery remove and reinstall to get it to charge..it only worked once then i took it back to bb and they exchanged my phone since it was defective ..

Try powering with the Wall Charger instead of the USB in a computer
This must be contagious plugged wall charger into phone woke up to white led and dead battery. Car charger and computer usb works. Tried car charge with ac to cigarette plug didn't work. Now the same car charger doesn't work in car. Tried a powered usb hub didn't work. Who knows!?!?
Update:
Got a stand alone battery charger never had this kind of battery life. Phone charging circuit must have been half bad from day one.

Sick Nook (won't charge up)

My battery went totally dead last night. I plugged the Nook in to recharge it and now all it does is try to startup and then it shuts down. Just a continuous loop. I will see the U and then it shuts off. I've tried holding button/s, pulled SDcard, nothing works. I'm on CM7 and I've tried both the wall wart and PC with the same results.
Held down the power button for around 4 mins and it finally shutdown and now it's charging
Leave it alone for at least twenty minutes or so. It should eventually start up. I had this happen once.

Also don't try to boot into clockworkmod when charging from a PC it doesn't work at least in my experiences.

Held it down for 8 minutes and in my case it did not help...
Other constructive ideas anyone?
Tnx in advance.
---------------
UPDATE: problem solved. In order to solve it, I had to disassemble the tablet and unplug the screen cord, then I put the power cable in, battery charged up for about an hour or so, then I plugged screen cord back in and turned it on without a problem. The down side of early charge attempts is that tablet decided that I had 10 failed boots and it reset my previously rooted device. Now I have fresh and clean stock 1.4.2 version.
Have you been charging it with chargers other than the one that came w/ the Nook? If so, you might have a broken battery. You might need to get it replaced.
The only problem with it is the battery is so dead it can't boot, but every time the nook is plugged in it attempts to boot because it isn't recommended to charge while off.
Leave it be for a while and it will charge. Just because it doesn't say anything about charging doesn't make it dead completely. Once it gets to 5 or 10% battery it will start up fine.
If you're impatient and want it to charge now then once it begins to boot immediately hold down the power button. It will stop it from doing the boot loop while charging.

alevineman, if you are asking me about chargers, then yes, I have stock charger that came with nook. I solved my problem by unplugging screen cord - has to disassemble the nook It charged the rest of capacity without problems and now works fine. It seems like B&N forgot to implement protection against booting without sufficient charge level. Even my 3 year old phone palm treo has this protection.

The thing is that holding down power button did not stop nook from trying to boot every 7-10 seconds. Screen lights up and because there is not enough power boot cycle fails. It seems like B&N either flashed too low requirements for power needed to boot or the power guard is not working as it should.

Is my battery fried?

So I've been running CM9 nightlies on my phone for a for a while now and everything has been working great. I believe the last nightly I flashed was 5/12 or around there and I've had no problems with it so far until last night my battery was about to die. So I plugged it in to my computer to charge overnight. This morning when I woke up I noticed the phone was dead and was pretty warm to the touch. Now it won't turn on.
I have tried pulling out the battery and letting them both sit for about 30min but it still won't turn on. When I put the battery in and try turning it on the charging icon pops up for a second or 2 then goes away and sometimes it will flash on and off. I think it could be the battery because if I take the battery out and try going in to download mode it will turn on to the initial warning screen warning about flashing and what not. If i put the battery in at this point it immediately shuts off. I just don't know how it could go from working fine to not working at all overnight.
Anyone have any suggestions? The phone is only about 4 months old.
Use your wall charger to charge it.

Sorry I should have added that to the original post, plugging directly into the wall is what I have been trying today and still no luck.

Every phone that I have ever owned with a USB port I have charged through the USB port from a computer, and I have never once had an issue. When I plugged it in the battery symbol changed to charging so I didn't think anything of it. When I woke up it was dead.

Order a new battery off Amazon or something.
Will it power on with the battery in and the wall charger connected?

I'm thinking that's what I'm going to do. Might take it to Best Buy and see if they can check it since the phone is only 4 months old. Not holding my breath on that though.
Phone will not turn on with the battery in while plugged in to the wall charger. I can see the battery symbol with the little circle when I first plug it in but it goes away after a second or so. The only way I can get the phone to turn on is if I remove the battery, hold the volume buttons and plug the USB cable in while connected to a PC. This brings up the download mode warning screen asking to continue. If i put the battery in at this screen it shuts off. If I hit continue with the battery out if shuts off. I guess the only thing to do is try another battery.
Does it taste like chicken? If so, then its probably fried.

Replace the battery.
welp apparently it fixed itself. I just left the battery in it and let it sit powered off for the rest of the work day and when I was leaving work ready to head to Best Buy just out of curiousity I plugged it into my car charger and it magically turned on. Now the wall charger and USB charging are working as well. No clue what that was all about but works for me. Thanks for the replies guys.
Bah same thing is happening to me with my sgs2. It just keeps showing the battery charging screen then going off. Any ideas?

Your battery should be dead. My dad had exactly the same experience as you did. Try calling att for a new battery if the phone still in warranty.
USB charging is just unreliable: different motherboards may even supply slightly different voltages. Although it doesn't make a difference in normal use, adding a near empty battery to the equation complicates things.

can't get Note to turn on

Help!
Had my Note a couple of months no problems. This morning I forgot to get it out of my bag to sit on the desk. When I remembered it had got very hot and had a blank screen. I now can't get it to turn on.
I have already:
- let it cool down and taken the battery out and put back.
- Pressed the power button for upto 30 seconds
- Pressed combinations of power+menu+vol up, power+menu for 10 seconds or more
- Tried the above with the SIM card removed
What can I do? Is my phone bricked? There is not sign of response, no vibration etc to indicate the phone is on.
did you try plugging it in? Maybe you fried the battery.

I agree, it may very well have lost its charge. Connect to charger and see if it works again. You may have to replace battery if it happens again.
That happened to me once, let the battery die out completely and couldn't turn it on... make sure you plug it in to the wall charger and not a computer or laptop, you'll be there for days trying to charge it.

For some reason, If my phone is powered down I can not turn it on while it's plugged in. Frickin weird, but who knows. So when my battery died this weekend I had to charge it for about 15 minutes, unplug, turn on, once I saw samsung on screen I plugged back in and was good to go. It just started doing that recently, no idea why. So yea, I would suggest charging that joker for a good 20 minutes, unplug, hold button (should vibrate once or thrice), and see if that helps. Batteries don't like heat and tend to lose a large bit of their capacity when hot (not perm). My laptop works for a good 3-4 hours under heavy use, but when I go to afghan it dropps to half that under comperable load, then back home it works well again. Batteries are a fickle thing.

Dead i777???

Ok here is the issue...I have been having random reboots for a while( 3-6 months) thought it was just a dirty flash. I did a clean install of AOKP as suggested and the problem persisted. I thought well maybe the ROM just does't like my phone so I tried ShoStock, CM10, SlimBean, Xylon, and straight up stock...Well none of these helped, the more I researched my problem on XDA, Rootzwiki, and Google the more I saw that it was probably a power button malfunction. I sent the phone into mobiletechvideos.com to get the power button replaced, they probably did a great job from all the reviews and testimonials I've got from my other dev team (Team Passion FTW:]) but now every time I plug it into a charger it flashes the charging battery symbol two or three times and then stops. The phone won't turn on and I can't get to download mode/ recovery/ any mode... The phone acts as though it's just dead. ANY help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks XDA community, you've helped me in the past let us figure this out together!!

I did let the battery die...I hadn't used the phone in over a month so the battery was drained, you really think the battery is dead enough to not hold a charge at all??
P.S. I don't have an extra battery on hand, is there a way to check without a battery to see if the phone is really dead??

it is a known issue that the phone won't charge or turn on if you let the battery completely die. I've had it happen to me, but I luckily had a spare battery laying around.

I've heard of this method but I have not tried it myself. You take a piece or two of tape and cover the data pins on the battery. They would be the first and third pins from the left (the ones without the + & -).
Once taped, you put the battery back in the phone and charge it. The screen should do nothing. After about 15-30 minutes, remove the tape and plug in normally. Your battery should now have enough juice to operate normally.

Ok so I have determined it was the battery after using a battery of a friends phone. I have tried to cover up pins one and three but every time I plug the phone in it keeps flashing the battery sign and then shutting down.. I'm just wondering if this isn't going to work or if I should try the other pins?? I already ordered a new battery but I'm curious now how this is supposed to work.
I think the theory is that the phone is trying to read the battery but the battery doesn't have enough juice to provide the info. You block the data pins so only the positive and negative terminals make contact and you trickle charge it.
I've also heard of using a 9v battery to jump the battery. You just connect positive to positive negative to negative and pray neither one becomes a bomb in your face.

My phone is doing the same exact thing. The power button started acting up on my phone and then stopped working altogether. The battery died and now it won't turn or or charge, it just flashes the battery icon briefly then shuts off. I ordered a cheapo charger so I can see if charging the battery to full at least lets me turn it on. Please let me know if replacing the battery fixes things. I had this same problem with the battery about a year ago and it seemed to resolve itself after a few hours but that doesnt seem to be the case anymore after a few days it still won't work.
Yeh the battery's for these phones are odd. Some people can let their battery die completely and nothing negative will happen. Some let it die once and it never works again.
I've had this problem before. I wouldnt turn on completely, but if you plugged the phone in and powered it on in COMPLETE darkness, you can just see the backlight flickering on an off.
My way of fixing this was to plug the phone in the wall charger (without the battery) and then press and hold the vol down + power buttons (this is how you enter Download Mode) and then insert the battery while holding those buttons. It should power up into download mode. You just have to use something like Odin to return it to stock.
Now I know you ordered a battery already, but try this out to see if it works for you since you don't have the battery yet.

This button combination will put the SGH-I777 into recovery mode, not download mode. I'd like to be nice about it if possible, but please be sure you are posting correct information. Otherwise, it can be very confusing for those who don't know the phone real well.

This is what is happening to me. If I plug it in I can see the the touch buttons on the bottom briefly flash and the screen flicker. It's as if its trying to start up but doesn't have enough juice. Unfortunately it does the same thing with the battery out and I am unable to get into download or recovery. Hopefully its just the battery.
Not sure if the OP made any progress but I was having the same problem and I bought a cheapo stand alone battery charger off of amazon and charged the battery for a couple hours and now the phone turns right on. Seems the other people in this thread are right about the phone being picky if the battery is completely drained. Here's a link to charger if anyone is interested. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0081KRLMQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
