Hi all,
I want to backup my data before I unlock my BL. As it seems not possible to backup /data without root, I tried adb backup. But it just creates an empty file and no dialog is shown my phone. I tried it under linux and windows.
Any ideas? Or is there another way to backup /data without root?
Thanks!

Use the test poing method to unlock the boot loader. it doesnt have a risk of losing data or DRM content thats what i done but i've got the MT15i have a look into it

Upgrading to GB possible, but unlocking no. The fastboot oem unlock command wipes data.
titanium back up and my back up root are your friends.
If you are stock 100% and you will do an 100% stock update, I don't think you will loose any data.
But in that case, I don't know if you will be able later to unlock your bootloader if you want.
If you want to unlock your BP and install a custom rom, then read carefully all instructions. In that case you will loose your data. Use titanium backup, to backup, and then restore them back(except fingerprint data - uncheck it)!

Is pro really necessary? I really can't afford it at the moment.
And I have experience with custom roms on other devices. Tried out one of the p-roms a while ago and it was garbage. I'll be waiting for cm7 or MIUI.
I'm also not completely stock, I'm rooted.
Also, does the data wipe include everything but the sd-card?
Also, also, is there a stock gingerbread zip I can flash after the unlocking?
Swifted from my Atrix.
Can Titanium pro backup app's settings?

Pro is not necessary. You can use the free version. The Pro version let's you restore with one click whereas free version wants you to make more clicks. Also, do not backup and restore system data/settings, and only app/data.

I backed up all my apps and system data. after upgrading to gingerbread I chose to restore individual apps. How do I restore my text messages without restoring all my old system data?

Not sure TiBU can.
When I back up, I backup apps/data with tibu and sms/various other stuff with my back up root.
Does anyone know of a stock/rooted gingerbread zip that can be flashed after unlocking?

If you are rooted (to use Titanium Backup), do you lose the root when applying OTA Gingerbread? If so, what's the best way to regain root?

Any chance you can point to a specific thread? There's so much activity going on the Atrix forum right now that it's hard to find things. (Search for "preinstall method" did not yield anything useful.)

download the attached file in post 2 (preinstall.zip or something). Follow the instructions and run the command in post 1 (the last set of commands ,not the first couple that are based on the SBF)

hello
i am on unlocked at&t atrix. (4.1.83 froyo)
i don't want to loose my applications.
should i unlock the boot loader first or root?
can i make a back up of my apps before rooting?
root first then use titanium backup to backup your apps.
rooting won't cause you to lose any apps or data however unlocking will.
i found this way for rooting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626 and it said WARNING: THIS WILL DELETE YOUR INTERAL SD-CARD, BACKUP FIRST!!!

You have to root first so you can back up your stuff with Titanium Backup
Yes, gingerbreak will delete your internal and external sd card, but that's not Apps. You can just copy all the stuff in yuor internal and external SD card to your computer and then root.
then you install titanium, back up all your apps. Install mybackup root to back up your texts if you want to keep them.
Then you can unlock.
Personally I had no issues as far as losing apps or data when rooting or unlocking, but I would suggest rooting first and using cwm recovery to make a backup then unlock the bootloader.
Also if you're concerned about losing data on your internal sd, just take it out of the phone. Use the root and unlock instructions on briefmobile.com

Backup your apps with Titanium Backup.
Use Mybackup Root to backup - Sms/MMS/Bookmarks/settings
Backup the contents of your internal SD to external SD.
And you should be safe
Once you unlock the BL and install CWM, you can backup your entire rom with CWM backup feature. Do that before starting modding.
I couldn't find any statement that answers my question. My friend is interested in rooting his phone to backup his apps with TB. His phone is currently stock (4.5.141). Is there a root method where the phone is not reset to factory? It would defeat the point of rooting if he looses all his data.
Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

If he backs it up through titanium he can use a root browser and copy the file to ext-sdcard, factory reset doesn't erase that. You could also put the backup on a computer via USB if he doesn't have an ext-sdcard. Be sure to put the file back in the proper directory after wiping.

It was my understanding TB would not be able to backup anything unless it had root access in the first place..

Oh sorry I misread your OP. Yes titanium needs root to perform backups. If you try the USB method you can pull files from the phone and sdcard and store them on your computer.
Edit- also just rooting shouldn't reset data, unless your unlocking the bootloader as well

Hello,
I see this for ICS users today: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...+your+device+and+confirm+the+backup+operation
Anyone has tried it on Xperia S or Xperia 2012 phone?
I' d like to backup apps data before downgrading to Gingerbread and upgrading on a rooted ICS!
For me, when I try to backup it says: "Now unlock your device and confirm the backup operation", nothing appears on my Xperia S and the backup file is 0 octets...... ;-(.
Could some one help me?
Or, if someone has a great idea on how backup apps data without root, your welcome.
Thanks a lot.

where do I get this app for my AT&T Sony Xperia Ion ?
Well, I cant use the stock backup and restore app, since it always fails to backup, no matter what I choose to backup...
So, any solution to the adb problem?
If not, that's also fine; the main thing is that my settings are saved via PC Companion
I am used to do a full backup prior to installing a new ROM or doing a Factory Reset with Titanium Backup, but I have to be Rooted. Right now I am not Rooted and I want to follow the steps in this forum to became Rooted but that will erase everything I have on the phone, what App will be a good option to do a full backup?, thanks

Wrong. Works perfectly fine for me. Make sure USB debugging is enabled and that you have the drivers installed.
