[Q] Tossing up between an S3 a One X and a Nexus - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't decide between an S3 a One X or a Nexus, the Nexus is great I love the idea behind it but the specs are too outdated, and a new nexus is just around the corner. The One X is nice, nice screen nice specs, but not completely open (Romming is VERY important to me), the S3 is a beast, massive screen, totally awesome, but how "hackable" is it, I remember reading about some developer raging at the exoynos chipset?. So I'm just wondering, do the roms all work 100% or are there missing drivers and all that crap that we android fanatics hate. And is the romming process nice and easy, root, install cwm, flash roms (From what I've read yes it is like that). S3 owners, please chime in, I need to make a decision by tonight.

Exynos source is bring released so the s3 is obviously the best option in terms of romming and with exynos sources due to be released they can only get better

Are there any major problems I should know about. I know I probably sound silly but it's a lot of money for a phone
EDIT: Specifically: Camera (Video and picture), FM radio(does spirit fm work).

If roms are very important to you get the new Lgnex. There's no phone like a Nex. If you like Aosp, go Nex. I have a Gnex, GS3 and a N7 and I will be selling my S3 to grab LGnex soon as its available! If you like tw or sense then go w/ others but they will never have the amount of aosp roms that a Nex has. (Kernels too) You ever own a Nexus you will get confused as to what to flash. You also have a device compatible w/ the Android Sdk , fastboot, adb which are not available on any other device and make things much easier and 100% safe. I like my S3 but im Nexus all the way!!

Go for the older?

Me and my mother are switching to At&t soon, and I'm kinda stuck. I have an Epic on Sprint now and development is top notch. Miui,cm7,cm9, sense ports are being worked on, its just great. What my issue is, is I can't figure out what phone to get. I'm stuck mostly between the HTC Vivid and the OG SGSII. Development is huge for me, I'm a terrible flashaholic. I NEED good stuff to flash such as cm, miui, and stuff like that. Benchmarks don't matter to me.. but development does.. what do you guys think I should do?

The HTC Vivid is more comparable to the Skyrocket really. It's huge.
I've only had the HTC Inspire 4G but that phone was worlds harder to mod than the SGS2. HTC seems more adamant about people not rooting their devices, and for that reason I'd say go for the SGS2. Plus this phone basically shares the i9100 community since the Hellraiser by Entropy. I don't know much about the Vivid community so I cant comment there. The only appealing thing to me about HTC is its Sense UI. I personally like it better than TouchWiz.
Honestly if Dev support is what you're looking for then this is the phone for your, vivid can't even compare.

Thought the updated HTC tool took care of that?
Anyway. Get the i777 OG SGSII. Nuff said.
Any Galaxy S variant will be the best option for development, mainly because the international versions get ported over relatively quickly and have huge dev support.
Go with the vivid, faster data, better ui, better hardware and will probably have ICS before the SG2, ohh and yes you can unlock the bootloader with developer tool.

Better UI is subjective, i find sense to be a little too over the top with animations and it slows the phone down with its bloat. We have better hardware no question thoug, the vivid may have better build quality, but its hardware is definitely not better (Exynos>>>>>>>> Snapdragon). The S II never had a locked bootloader to begin with either so we didn't have to wait months for that. Also, what the hell makes you think we'll get ICS after the vivid? we are waiting for two things that will be solved when source is released for the international Galaxy S II i9100, which has a huge developer following unlike the vivid.
Tough call. I love my gs2. I'm always looking at flashing too. Since the hellraiser package from the great entropy it opened the doors to almost all the roms at the I9100 section. Now we have a flashaholic tool also. Only downfall for the time being is us waiting for kernel source for ics. Which should hopefully be real soon. Most all the devs in the I9100 are now doing ics roms and unfortunately we can't run it properly. But when that day comes when we can watch out, the flood gates will be wide open to tons of roms.

They still have s-on. They can flash roms, but not radios, or rooted ruu's.
But anyways get whatever you like, the vivid is a great device in my opinion. (I'm a sense lover). Touchwiz 4 l love also, I picked this phone because of the processor, its a Samsung

Any LTE device will deliver poor battery life - just like UMTS (3G) was bad for battery in the first 1-2 years of its existence.
After a year or two, LTE will hopefully no longer have the power penalty it currently has, but right now, LTE = battery hogging fatty. Just look at how awful all of Verizon's phones have been in the weight/battery life arena since they moved to LTE. Supposedly the radios in AT&T's LTE phones are better, but all reports I've heard indicate otherwise.
The Vivid boot unlocker is a HTC site, once you use it your phone's warranty is null and void. Really nice HTC.
GS2 has CM7, MIUI, numerous hellraised roms, and Samsung touchwiz roms. Development in the Vivid is much more limited. Maybe that will change in the future but who can say.
Good point - technically the flash counter on GS2 voids your warranty, but it's REALLY easy to bypass that currently.
Voiding warranty due to custom binaries is lame - If a manufacturer is concerned with custom firmware causing problems, they simply need to make it easy to return-to-stock. None of this bull**** with putting minefields in the path of those who want custom firmware that make it easier to brick.
Samsung already has this capability, but they only enable it from the factory on the Galaxy Player. With a full return-to-stock image, the Galaxy Player 5.0 cannot be hardbricked by any means - if the bootloaders are corrupted, it falls back to a built-in bootloader mode within the CPU hardware. All Hummingbird and Exynos devices have this capability but Samsung usually disables it.

Is this phone worth buying?

Sorry if this has already been posted or is in the wrong section i am new to the forums.
Okay i recently got into rooting and putting custom roms on my phone right now i have an HTC evo 4g.
But i am eligable for an upgrade with sprint i have been waiting for a while because i knew there would be an amazing phone to be released soon enough and i am starting to think the SIII.
Is this phone worth it? I would only be paying 250$ for the 32gb and 199$ for the 16gb with my upgrade.
is there any other phones that are up there with the galaxy s3 on sprints network? Or should i just go and get this phone.
is it alot faster then the s2? also will i be able to put jellybean on it if i was to get it? is there a stable release out.
Yes. Go get this phone.
Is the best currently available.

Buy the phone if you want it. It's a great phone but it may not suit your needs. Check it the specs and compare it with other phones you can choose from .
Your s3 model won't be the international version, it will be the dial core version so check their forum to see their development.

The dual core GS3 has documented and developer-friendly Qualcomm = definitely worth buying.
S3 is easily the best phone I have ever owned (and I have owned a great many top-spec phones).
That said I preferred the S2 in terms of size and weight. But the S3 has a higher quality screen and considerably better battery life
Oooh i see now the I9300 is the quad core version which is not in the US
The US version is dual core.

Thank you very much.
Just wanted to add my opinion to this one as I'm sick of all the exnos bashing.
Just because cm devs can't get it to work properly does not mean it's bad. It's the best version and I've never ever used a ti Omap or Qualcomm based phone that wasn't **** and dont get me started on cm roms on phones as from desire onwards I've never encountered a cm version worth installing as they aren't worth it. Stock android has always been and always will be lacking and ugly no matter how many cookie cutter mods you implement like volume button wake which is old old old.
Do yourself a favour and stick to Samsung based roms and save the headache and the laughs from people who see your stock android device and the pictures that come off the aosp camera among other things.
The SG III is way better value than the iphone 5.
If you want something "worth buying", you are the only one who can actually decide on this.. because it may/may not suit you. So i suggest you search and gather info for yourself so you get accurate infos
I do not mean to flame or anything, just a mini-suggestion. Hopefully this will help you in your decision

I am surprised that no one said that you should wait for the Note 2 or the new Nexus or the next Galaxy S x, where x>3. There will always be better, but when you actually start using the phone you see that you don't need anything more, except less call log lag
It is that great that I don't even have the urge to root it right now and I rooted and reflashed everything android I had before.

HTC One X+ a pain to Dev for.

HTC does a really bad job with sources, some of us already know that.
Some things you might want to know
1- the One X+ Can not flash a custom rom with its boot loader locked, unless of course there an S OFF method, but that's a low possibility. In other words HTC in some cases takes its time to release a boot loader unlock method. Usually they do a good job with this. What they suck at is giving Kernel sources. We won't see a custom kernel until December if the device was released in October
2- Its hard to do ports based of sense, so development could go for the worst with very little to no source and playing around with sense is not really a walk in the park
The one x+ looks like a good device. Hopefully T Mobile picks it up over here in the US soon.
Just giving a heads up.
As previous One X great Devs found a way to move on development, sure X+ will have a lot of dev!
It's not a big improvement against the One X (international) though, but after the new Nexus will be a LG, I will maybe even buy this device as my next phone and will do some stuff for it..

So you're saying for someone like me who buys phones to slap CyanogenMod on, I should expect poor results with the One X+? I will avoid then.
However, does sharing Tegra 3 with the Nexus 7 benefit the One series any? Did the One X get helped by the Nexus 7? I see this kinda like the SGS1 phones getting benefit from the Nexus S sharing SoC. The SGS2 is totally screwed as you know as it still lacks hwcomposer and stuff for CM10.
Yes I could get a Nexus, but sometimes I happen to like the design of non nexus phones more. The One X/X+ are truly sexy phones to me, and as long as they're decent to develop for I'd jump in.

This could be possible but we are never sure, either way getting something like CM booting is only half the work, the real test is getting wifi, Bluetooth, GPS etc working without HTC releasing anything. The only way to get them working is work arounds. If you are a flashaholic that likes roms that are not based off stock then stay away.
If you like Sense then by all means get it

As someone who has an HTC flyer I must say, It saddens my to hear that HTC hardware isn't an option.
HTC has some aesthetically pleasing hardware and sense itself can be pretty nice. The tablet just feels great in your hands, and has a nice screen..
It absolutely sucks that HTC lets themselves get held back by poor sources.. I'm "ok" with my tablet not having the most up to date version constantly.. I didn't sign a contract for it.. but, I really don't want a phone that I'm locked into having for 2 years to be left out for no real good reason.
Still, I'd kill to see a smooth running JB rom that is factory quality on my flyer.
Thanks for the warning.
I have a Sensation and if it wasn't for CM this thing would have been in the garbage. I'm hoping to pick up one of these and I'm sure development work for it will eventually come around. It needs some time.

Switching to another phone possibly from LGOG =(

I loved this phone is did a lot of research and reviewed videos on this phone before I got it and it looked beast. I'm disappointed that there is SO LITTLE development with this phone, I'm thinking about switching to a more popular phone that everyone actually knows and cares to build roms for and support I really like this phone ,but again it just needs way more attention for me. Anyone else feels this way?

Patience is key. You can't force a dev to make a ROM or "develop" for a device. They have lives as well. Everything is pretty close to being here.
Besides if your not likening the "Development" you can always try and make a ROM buddy. Then maybe you can see how its not done overnight.
Oh look this thread again

@Phonephan, I totally hear where you're coming from. I would have hoped for more options by now as well, but I knew what I was getting into when I picked this bad boy up and that there was the chance its potential would go unrealized. However, Rome wasn't built in a day and there have been some unique challenges that some very good developers are about to overcome. Our empire is about to be built! We've already got a solid JB build that doesn't require conversion thanks to SnowLeopardJB. There are a couple solid ICS ROM's as well (shout out to team nocturnal, nygfan, etc.) The real treats are just around the corner and if you check in to the irc chat room you will see just how close. Hang in there bro, you'll be glad you did.

Funny to think that just a few years ago modifying the OS on your phone was not an option. Now folks cry when they don't have 100 variations of the same base rom within a week or two.
Maybe buy a device you like next time. Or wait longer and not buy the device on launch day, that way you can give the dev community time to work thereby ensuring you get an active community to take care of your flashing fix.
Why exactly do you feel the need to tell us that you're leaving? Did you do any development? Write any documentation? Are you afraid we wouldn't notice you were gone?

Seriously!? We have an ICS phone that developers have transformed into an upgraded nexus 4. Other developers have domesticated foreign JB Roms so well that this phone has every feature enabled today. We may only have a few topics... But major progress happens in them. This is the height of Android options with native pure Google and branded on the most recent versions.
You can install Roms from 3 forums onto this phone... US OG, Intl OG and N4.
The conversion will really pay off in six months when this is the first device with SD card and full android 5 while every other phone has gmail 5... Converted to 4.1

Didn't see that coming. If you look at my post I said I'm possibly getting a new phone not telling you I am and I was asking people if they felt the same. Also it's been months since its release so the fact that it's only 2 real ROMs for this phone makes me upset no, disrespect to devs obviously but it does seem like this phone is getting like no attention and it's one if the best phones out. Converting to n4 is a bit too much just to enjoy this phone. This phone was meant to be an LGOG not a nexus ..it would have been named nexus
Anyways that was just a thought/concern I had about the phone.. Don't see why people are offended?

Nobody bothered to develop ICS Roms other than pretty much stock based ones since we were promised Jelly Bean so early and obviously that didn't happen. Once Jelly Bean gets officially released, I know the devs will be all over it and Roms won't be an issue. The nexus 4 conversion is easy to do, I did it intoxicated twice. So either do that or just be patient. We're just waiting on AT&T now

Htc ONE Google edition?

After Sammy announced the S4 is coming out with the "vanilla" experience, the rumor mill started going crazy expecting htc to do the same, specially after one of their execs teweeted "wait".
Those rumors where quickly scuashed when another high up in the company tweeted that no htc was not planing a "vanilla" edition... However now the same guy (geek.com) that leaked that sammy was coming out with their has said that indeed htc is coming out with one as well.
So what do you guys think? And the big question would be, if they do come out with it, would we (T-mobile) guys be able to port it over and get OTA's directly from Google?

Exactly what I came to this forum for. If they do release it, can I port it over to my T-Mobile HTC One.
Since the only device announced at I/O was the S4 vanilla edition, I decided waiting around for a Nexus wasn't worthy it. I have the Galaxy Nexus, but I never liked the plastic feel of it and the S4 feels the same way, just with way better specs.
I've always liked HTC devices going back to the Windows Mobile days.

Yeah, I worry about Google's direction to slap AOSP on pre-existing devices (S4/One so far). Sure they don't need to design, engineer and product their own phone (Nexus 4) so from an infrastructure standpoint it makes sense. But once you start porting AOSP to multiple models, it will inevitably slow software releases because Google will have to ensure compatibility with varying hardware. Also, features will be missing that will make people upset (custom camera software, beats, multi-screen, etc).
Sure they will run pure AOSP, but at what cost (feature-wise)? That has me concerned.
Unless HTC/Sammy/Moto? release their highly configured software apps (camera, etc) independently, the AOSP experience on these currently produced devices will leave a lot to be desired, IMO.

Then don't buy one. More options are always better. IMO
I miss AOSP, but for once I feel there's features on the Sense ROM I don't want to give up. I think they did a really good job and for once I'm not pulling my hair out and needing to root the phone. (That's saying something!)

It's a reality guys... Really hope that devs can port this for us Tmobile users...

Same goes for me. I could live without the gallery (although nice), beats (there are plenty of EQ apps out there), blink feed, and many others. the one piece i could not go without is the camera software! Sequence shot alone is stellar, and some of the other zoe features are great as well.
That said i am keeping my fingers crossed that the fine devs here will be able to port the camera software to the stock rom when it hits. If that happens this phone would be absolutely perfect in my eyes!

Yes, especially since the announcement did not say it would have TMO radios. I think this is basically an ATT device, similar to the 32 Gb unlocked version.
We may not have to port....

I just want a camera that's a camera. Zoe seems stupid to me as do filters.

Zoe isn't on by default.
However, I found some pretty good uses for it. It's better than using the "action" shot setting. It's literally like taking freeze frames from high definition video. I've finally been able to get decent pictures of my dog. It's hard to get her to stand still.
The camera was the main reason that I stayed on stock but the aokp camera is actually really good
