I've tried updating my phone via kies but nothing happens, it seems to hang once it's finished downloading the firmware update.. Has anyone experienced this? Am I doing something wrong?
I was rooted, but I used Odin via PC to get back to stock.

Yeah I tried updating to 2.3.6 OTA on and wifi through software update.. it just froze on me after it rebooted when going into the update process. It as stuck at loading screen.. Any way I can just flash to 4.0.3 stock?
Do you have a stock kernel?
Anyways open kies on pc, click tools, upgrade and initialize with no phone connected to pc, input phone model, input s\n can be found behind battery of phone. if anything It might be possible itwill prompt to flash the firmware you are already currently on (happened to me). Update. Once it is complete do the steps over and you should be presented with ics on the next upgrade and initialize attempt. Good luck

Any help would be appriciated
I have the same problem too. I used to be rooted but I unrooted it today by flashing the stock kernel and recovery using CWM and the stock rom using ODIN. Now when I connect to the computer and launch Kies, it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies."
Additional Info from Kies:
"Current firmware version: PDA:LA1 / PHONE:LB7 / CSC:LA1 (ATT)"
Flash gingerbread. Modem
XDA is no longer worth my time.

I was rooted, but running the stock ROM. All I did was run Kies and do the update....no problems.
AFTER that I installed CWM via Odin, then copied SU.zip (For ICS) and installed that via recovery.
Then I started dumping the bloat...still a few ATT apps I don't find in the "normal" \system\app folder. I know I've read they are somewhere else, just can't remember where right now. Only three left to dump anyway.

Are you putting it into download mode before you run kies? You dont have to go to stock, to update.
There are threads with stock...click on my signature picture for the links.
What is the end state, are you returning your Note?

Had same problem. Make sure your modem, kernel, and rom are all GB and ucla1. for instance your kernel is probably lf5,should be la1.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
It most likely won't allow you because of the modem. If you don't have the gb modem it will not update. If all else fails you can do an emergency upgrade. Put phone in dl mode and run emergency firmware. It will not connect while in dl mode but will upgrade to ics.
Edit: Just saw the post above mine. Sorry about the double post about the modem.
Follow the directions and you will be fine...

This has been done time and time again to get custom rom phones to ICS without issue.

Good day,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone, which I recently unrooted. I followed this guide to unroot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613
I used Odin3, v1.85. The file I put in the PDA section was downloaded from the site in the guide and was the following: I9300XXALF5_I9300PROALF1_I9300XXLF5_HOME.tar.md5
I did run into some problems while attempting to unroot though, a few times I started the process in Odin to find it had failed after the first quarter of the bar was filled. I think this might have had something to do with my pc ejecting my phone whenever it felt like, but I'm not completely sure (the rooting was done on a different pc by someone else). Of course, because of that I couldn't properly start my phone and it gave me an error message about the firmware not being correctly installed. I persisted and eventually I got it working, though no idea how I managed.
Now, before the root and during the root I had Android 4.1.1, but after the unrooting it went to 4.0.4. Whenever I try to search for an update, either via WiFi, 3G or even Kies on the pc, it says there aren't any new updates. Device status is normal, and custom binary download is No. Bought my phone in Belgium, if that matters any.
Screenshot of the about screens in attachment. Is there anything I can do to get it to update, preferably without the use of Odin?
Please be gentle, I'm a complete noob when it comes to this and I'm not looking to reroot.
Thank you for reading through!
just connect your phone with computer and update via samsung kies
else, download the firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmware/ for your country and flash using pc odin

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I however already tried with Samsung Kies, and it says there isn't an update there too. I tried finding the latest firmware on the site you linked for unrooting, and it came up with the file I mentioned in the first post, which resulted in 4.0.4. I'm kinda hesitant to flash again, since I encountered problems when I unrooted.
EDIT: Just tried with Kies again, and it tells me it is the latest firmware. It says something like this:
PDA:LF5/PHONE:LF5/CSC:LF1 (PRO)
Root your phone again
And install mobile odin
Then wipe data and cache using Mobile Odin
It will factory reset
Then you will see that your device status becomes normal
Then go to super su settings and choose full unroot

Thank you! I will try that soon, when I have time. Just a question though, is there no need for Triangle Away with this method? I remember using it for the unroot before.
I think you should also use triangle away to reset the flash counters

Guess I'll post it here for people who happen upon the same problem.
Got it fixed, using this guide:
androidcritics.com/how-to-update-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-official-android-4-1-1-jelly-bean-xxdlib-firmware/
Basically just used Odin to flash the file downloaded there (I9300XXDLIB_I9300OXFDLI1_I9300XXDLIB_HOME.tar.md5) on the phone, worked after the second try. I think my problem is that my computer decides to eject my phone whenever it feels like.
After flashing 4.1.1, it found and installed 4.1.2 update, so I think it's fixed now.
Thanks to everyone who helped. Cheers!
Ok, so I think I have really screwed up. I was updated to the latest update. I then tried to root using the terminal emulator process and wasn't sure if I succeeded. So I tried to unroot by trying to use Odin to put an earlier stock rom on my Verizon GS4. I got a fail error in Odin and a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it and an error on the phone that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again. I tried connecting through Kies, but the phone would not connect. I have tried (with what I think are earlier stock ROMs) to fix it through Odin. I keep getting the same error on my phone and can't get past it. The only other thing I can do on my phone is get into download mode. Any suggestions? Thanks

I have the same problem. Basically whats wrong is the new update that both you and I did on the S4 locked the bootloader. What his means basically is it cannot be downgraded to earlier stock firmwares. So what we need to use in Odin is the stock file for the Build VRUAME7 Android 4.2.2 not the older one thats Build VRUAMDK. Now I have not been able to find this Stock file anywhere. If you'd like to join the search it would be awesome. Haha
The me7 odin image is in the dev section.

So, this all started last year when i wanted to disable updates. For the life of me, i cant remember what i did but there have been no updates. Recently, I have been getting the OTA notification to update. So i did that and when it installs it gives an error at 26%. My phone is rooted and has USB debugging on so i put it in download mode and tried to use ODIN to update it with both the stock firmware and KitKat. they both failed. Today, I tried to do it again but added the file to BL instead of AP in ODIN. Now my phone gives the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue" screen. I tried to use Kies to fix it but it doesnt connect when this screen is up. When i restart the phone in download mode, then my computer detects the device.
I have a ATT gs4 model SGH-I337
Please HELP!

flash a stock rom and then fastboot flash your stock recovery, then update your phone the update should be triggered in the stock recovery, with a custom recovery, it won't work
the only other easy way around this besides doing what I said is to look for a firmware thread for your device and flash the firmware as a op who has tested it states.

So i did that but still got an error. I think that one of the reasons why it was messing up before is an issue with Kies blocking the port from opening. So i closed that out per the below thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622790
But it started and the status bar on my phone is now blue (which is what how this bigger issue started before) I found this other link that kind of fits whats going on. Should i just follow the PIT instructions from here and of course just restart my phone again?

Im pretty sure i was at 4.3. So everything was working and then i found a random article saying that with the ALL_ATT_I337UCUFNB1_I337ATTFNB1_505595_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 update, you have to put in the PIT file again. So i did that and now my phone turns on and says custom, but then shuts off. I can go into download mode and recovery. I tried to factory reset everything but to no avail.

Hmm, the pit might be why you're having issues. Most updates don't need the separate pit file. If it's needed, it's often packaged in the main tar file. I would just redo the Odin flash without pit and factory reset afterwards.
