Hi guys.
My sister has a s3 (4.0.4). She wanted me to update it. (OTA not available). The phone is on 3 (UK). So i plugged it in kies and started to update it. After it had finished i turned the phone on and to my surprise it was asking for an unlock code! I was confused because it was working before the update. What made it even worse was that it hadnt updated to jellybean rather it was still 4.0.4. I was baffled.
So i decided to root it then do an unlock. This worked fine however i don't want the root for my sister as she is not into all this stuff. So i checked online if i could unroot. The only option i found was to a factory reset!. I can't do that as my sister will kill me. So now I'm stuck. Kies won't recognise my phone because its rooted. So what do i do??? I cant update it till its unrooted so I'm stuck.
Can you please tell me if there is any way round this. And how can i get jelly bean?.
Thanks.
keep it rooted and hide the root apps from the app drawer, that way your sister won't use them / mess the phone up.
Only other way is a factory reset + stock reflash i guess. :/
Well if you reeeally want to unroot, then install triangleaway first and do the "traditional steps of removing the binary count".. and then just flash a firmware from sammobile.com
Cheers!

Rooting doesnt stop KIES from recognising your phone. It doesnt stop you from updating via KIES. After updating you will lose the root. You are doing something wrong. Also ...your phone is carrier locked so after the update you will have to unlock it again. There are different ways /software for unlocking ....choose a permanent way.....then flashing will not affect your unlock status
Cheers
If you don't want to be rooted, buy an unlock code from your network.
The software methods all require root.

There is no reason to suddenly need an unlock code after a firmware update...
I would check the right version if the Rom you installed.
Unroot is not very complicated, it's mainly erasing the su binary in /system/bin I think and uninstalling super user app.

Hi, appreciate this is my first post and thus my question will be regarded with a certain amount of skepticism.. am only posting cos I think my issue is unusual and have not been able to find a similar question/answer through my searches on this forum
Basically, the issue is I rooted my Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) a month or so ago, installed clockwork mod and superuser etc,. however I held off flashing a ROM because I figured my OTA jellybean update was imminent and wanted to see what the touchwiz jellybean looked like before installing Cyanogen or another ROM. wasn't sure if the OTA would come thru once I shed the stock ROM
So I waited for weeks for the OTA (am on Orange, now Everything Everywhere, in the UK) and have not received it.. last week I went onto Kies and saw there was a new firmware update, so I updated thru Kies thinking that might be what was needed to receive the OTA JB update. updated the firmware but still no JB update - however, now when I check my root status on Root Checker, or try to use any app that requires root, I'm told that I don't have "proper" root access.
My question is updating the firmware over Kies, did that mess up my root access.. am I now unrooted? (this doesn't seem correct) It seems to me I am in a limbo of sorts - not properly rooted anymore, but not fully unrooted either. I want to root the thing again so I can install cyanogen or supernexus, and I would appreciate advice on what to do - should I do a factory reset and then root again as before, or will this cause issues.. was just gon soldier ahead and do it but aware that this may cause problems if my phone already has files from the previous attempt on there.. for example the SGS3 toolkit V.6.0.0 I'm using says not to proceed with its root operations on a phone "that's already rooted" so am hesitant to proceed. Any advice would be appreciated. cheers
You've lost root with the update, just root again and it's all good.
Hi everyone. I'm not a TOTAL noob, but I am to this site. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated and if its a developer, I'm MORE than happy to donate. Anyhow, I have the Metro PCS Galaxy S3. It's rooted, but Im still using stock rom. I am trying to install the new jelly bean update OTA.
Now the only other update ive gotten for this device, I had to install via KIES and it was a firmware upgrade, but NOW this time, KIES is not seeing that an update is available. Just says "firmware is up to date"
Ive done alot of research and I believe that the issue is that I removed bloatware after I rooted the phone and back then I did not understand the value of a backup so I cannot restore the bloatware that I removed.
Ive already tried temporarily unrooting and installing with voodoo unroot, Ive tried restoring it to factory settings/wiping data and ive tried odin and clockwork mod to install the update but it fails everytime.
I even downloaded the triangle blocker and reset my flash counter to 0.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do?
You should have an option in your settings to look for an update but if it says your firmware is up to date then maybe you should root your phone again and not worry about the ota it's very slow and pain for use....

I purchased my phone unlocked in USA a year ago because i work and live overseas. It came with Gingerbread and I had no problems upgrading to ICS 4.0.4 but this morning Kies sent notificatrion of update to 4.4.4 so i installed it and I could no longer access my local network provider. I went to a local shop to have them try to unlock it but they had to do a factory reset. My sim works now but when I try to do a restore data etc through Kies it looks like it is doing it but then at the end says it failed. To make things worse, all my installed apps are gone but I can't install them again through google play store because it says they are already installed! I want to try and update to 4.0.3 again but Kies only gives the 4.0.4 option. Appreciate any help as I don't want to mess around with rooting and I am afraid that if i update to 4.0.4 again it won;t recognize my sim.

There is an app on the Play Store called "GalaxSim Unlock" use that if it relocks. If I were you I would flash stock ICS rooted.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
There's a 4.4.4 update?? Or are you referring to kies updating itself
If you get GalaxSim Unlock from the market, you will have to pay to unlock, but if you download it from the developers thread on these forums, you can unlock for free.
If you don't want to root, you probably won't get a lot of help from these forums, because it's a developer environment and almost everyone here has a rooted phone. There's not much experinece around here with Kies and other Samsung stock only tools.
That being said, if you want to go back to stock 4.0.3, you can flash that using Odin or Heimdall. Get the files you need from the Download Repository (link in my sig.) It's the last section at the bottom of the page.
If yours has not rooted, and not running any custom ROM, why would you go here anyway?

Because XDA is where to find the right answer to the problem.

About a month ago I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Grand(the single sim version) with the help of Klingo Root, worked like a charm and had no problems at all. I even uninstalled all the bloatware samsung and the carrier had installed. About 3 weeks ago then an official update poped-up, so I updated my phone through Samsung Kies. Everything went fine, but after the reboot of the phone I noticed that all the bloatware was back, so I just figured, maybe i have to uninstall it again.
But then disaster struck SuperU said there is no SU Binary installed, so I though could have the update unrooted my phone? So I tried rooting it again with Klingo, doesn't work, I tried Framaroot, doesn't work either, I even tried to install Clockworkmod with Odin and it doesn't work. I even repeated the procedure while factory resetting my phone.
Has anyone else encountered this? It seems my phone is somewhere in between being unrooted and rooted? Everything else works fine.
Help! I just want to uninstall the carrier bloatware!

When you update your software it actually update your firmware. So the previous method will not work for this firmware.
1. you need to do it with different method if developers found it for you
2. just installed previous version of android .
3. May be fixed by factory reset..
4. You can even install prerooted custom rom like CM11
As per my experience new update will not that much compactible for all phones..
Hi, I'll start from the beginning, so I have a smart phone vodafone 2 (Alcatel V860) I wanted to upload the new software but accidentally I uploaded a backup of the tablet, after uploading the backup phone can not be connected as the flash mode, or in any way, you can not enter the recovery can not in any way connect the computer, the phone is as if dead. when I connect it to the computer when it is turned off the sound indicating that a new device has been detected, however, this software can not be installed. I hope that there will be a magician who already had a similar problem and knows what to do. Please help as soon as possible, if anyone knows what's going on I can talk about it on skype because it seems to me that it will be hard to even describe.
Thanks in advance.

No... Samsung kies doesnt provide feature to downgrade android.
You need to flash firmware package through odin.
you can google it for your device or search on xda...
All the best..

Hi. I had rooted a galaxy s10 lite, android 11 of a friend of mine. He doesn't need root any more. If i go to settings and search for an official update, it gives me, "phone is running an unofficial firmware and can't be updated" or something like this. Phone is running official firmware but rooted actually.
So if i factory reset from settings I'll obviously loose root. Phone will boot i suppose, if nothing have changed resentlly. Will update then works? He doesn't have a PC. Or because bootloader will be unlocked, will still make update not working?
Thanks,

hello colleague
First of all, back up your information.
You will have to restore the s10 lite with the system from odin.
the bootloader will still be unlocked (if you previously unlocked it)
once restored from odin, you will be able to install updates over wifi.
you can try
restoring from system, but I'm not sure if it will work.
if it has twrp.
If you decide to restore from system and it works for you, you can share your experience, for future reference.
having the bootloader unlocked does not affect ota updates
Thanks.. Yes i know how to do it in odin. That's what i want to pass as I'll probably factory reset his phone without a pc to a coffee shop for example.. When I'll do it, ill post, although i think i won't do it very soon.
