[Q] Rooted i9300 want to update to JB - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i have an S3 and i want to install Jelly Bean.
At the moment i have my device rooted using: Odin3-v3.04_Galaxys3ii.com with CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4
Now to the question: How do i proceed correctly to update to jelly bean? And if possible, get root-access as well? But if that is too complicated i would happily settle with stock JB.
I tried to update OTA but got this error (roughly translated from Swedish): "Access to the software update service is provided to the user in the order they request it. try again later."
Then i tried through Samsung KIES. It finds an update but the program just freezes when i try to install it, not affecting the phone.
Thanks for all answers!

This is what Kies tells me when it want to update. It doesn't really tell me if its JB or not...

Ok nice! So given that im a noob and all.. Do i need to go to stock or anything before this or can i just load this in with odin and it will all work?

they flash in recovery, all you need is root and custom recovery, if you have those you are good to go, I recommend a wipe, but you could try without, if you find that you have problems with f/c 's then go back to recovery and do a factory reset

Question before upgrading to ICS (updates comming March 10th)

well, i have an GS2 rooted (android 2.3.4) and sim unlocked with Galaxy S Unlocker.
if i upgrade to ICS when its released, do i loose root?
if I loose root, SuperOneClick will still work if my GS2 is ICS or do i need to wait to an update of SUperOneClick (to supor GS2 with ICS) to root my device again?
well, those are my questions.
thanks in advance.

1) Of course you'll lose root if you go back to stock.
2) Ask whomever developed SuperOneClick if it will work with ICS.

Hi,
I've rooted my S2 with CF-Root 4.1 and I'm using a 2.3.5 SamFirmware ROM.
Can I just update over KIES when ICS comes out? Will the Kernel be replaced and what Files will be erased?

If you have a rooted rom, if I remember well, Kies won't update your firmware... You have to use ODIN...
ok so just to make this 100% clear (i am a complete noob and i always make stupid questions, so flaming is accepted )
I have a Galaxy S2 with just rooted firmware (XWKJ1). I used an insecure version of this firmware to root the phone following the Odin/CF Root guide. Also I am not using any custom made rom like CM for example... If I upgrade my phone through Kies when the ICS update rolls out will I be able to complete the process succesfully?
Also from what I understand if the update procedure is completed succesfully I will lose root and will have to do the whole process all over again... Is there an insecure firmware matching the ICS firmware that will replace my old one?
Thanks in advance for your help...

Unless the ICS firmware you upgrade to is already rooted, then yes. You will lose root.
Just try Resurrectio Remix v9.6 by westcrip. Its the best ics rom right now.

It was never guaranteed to be released worldwide on a single day anyways. Can you imagine the millions of I9100 users all trying to download the official ICS update via Kies at the same time? Their servers would have an aneurysm.
It would surely have been reposted for download though. Also, it was posted in various languages including English speaking Samsung sites.
I know that it is what it is and there's little point now, but I haven't had my ***** about it yet, except to my wife who is fairly confused about why this is such a disappointment for me.
Now I've had my little ***** attack about it not happening and will maintain it to this.
I dont understand why its such a big deal to get the update. Why not just flash a custom rom?

I've been squeamish after many GB ones had serious issues, for example we'd forgotten our camera when my second kid was born by cesarian and I had a sleep of death on the phone - was doing a Nandroid restore of stock 10 minutes prior to entering the operating room. It saved the day.
That said, I flashed a custom ROM right after that last post and it's been really impressive. I haven't yet found an issue with it. Everything seems to be working really well and the battery life might even be a little better than the GB ROM I was using though it's still to early to say.
I get annoyed with all the banners and the immediate back patting when there's a new RoM that hasn't even been tested, but just to answer the question some people might be asking about which one I was impressed with, it was Resurection Remix. It also happens, thogh, to be the first one I flashed that was a Samsung based ROM opposed to AOSP.
It is still annoying though. I suspect Samsung is merely manufacturing their own hype about this, intentionally, and that is irritating.

help me update my s3 pls?

Hi every one.
Got my s3 when it launched & rooted it with odin using the unlocked kernel? Can't remember exactly ?
My phone keeps telling me there is a software update, but it fails when I try install.
Looking for some advice on what I should do to update it. But obviously I don't want to lose root access.
Also jelly bean is due soon & I'm just wondering whether to wait till then?
Im currently using a stock Rom I think?
I really like the way I have it set up at the min & I'd like to keep it as close to how it is now on jelly?
Can you make a custom Rom from my phone & put it to jelly when it's released.
Any help or advice would be great.
Cos I'm totally lost to be honest?
there was a member who had a problem like this.
1-)people suggested him to flash a stock rom update it and root it again. ( of course do a nandroid backup or titanium backup )
then there will be no problems.
2-) you can choose to flash any available rom for your s3. directly put it in your internal sd and flash with cwm.
you can search that in forum.
P.S: Roms are for use of everybody, you can select what you want to install ( you dont need to search a Rom made for your phone )
OTA's don't work of you are rooted and running a custom recovery.
Flash the latest stock ROM via Odin and root it, but you won't get official OTA's when you are rooted.

So flash back stock kernel through odin , update it & then re-root?
Can jb be rooted yet?
I might wait till jb is released officially, it's due in a few days isn't it?
Thanks for the reply guys but I'm still a bit unsure what I'm doing tbh .
I always take my time doing stuff like this cos I don't want to brick my phone?

I'm rooted... How do I flash the latest OFFICIAL Samsung Jelly Bean ROM?

Hi,
I have my GS3 rooted, and its currently running a Custom ROM (FoxHound 0.7). What I want to do is move away from this and head back to the official Samsung stock ROM for extra stability.
I wasn't sure on:
a) Where to get the latest Jelly Bean releases for the UK i9300
b) How to go about flashing an official Stock ROM... Is it the same as flashing a Custom ROM, like through CWM??
c) Whether I will still be able to update OTA when new official update releases come out from Samsung?
Sorry for the questions but I've searched through a few threads and I can't seem to gather a definitive answer.
TIA

Can i know why did u root your GS3 in the first place if you planning to run stock rom.
Maybe try some custom roms which might gives you more benefit than stock rom.
Anyhow, if you still want to install stock rom, try finding it here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
Thanks. I'm downloading that now.
I rooted to try out different custom ROMS and also so that I could do things like hook up my PS3 control pad via Bluetooth but I've found the Custom ROMS I've tried (Foxhound, CM10, Omega, Paranoid Android, Resurrection Remix) all to be a bit flakey in different areas
This is the reason I want to go back to a Samsung Stock ROM, at least then I'll be on a completely stable platform and can still customise with a different launcher.
So do I flash this Samsung firmware in the normal way I would flash a Custom ROM?? Through ClockWorkMod recovery?? And will the official OTA updates still be available?

I found the easiest method to flash a stock ROM is MobildOdin till now as you directly can inject root (super user) and do not have to root later on again. Otherwise download your rom, and flash via Odin, after that flash again CF Root to get root.

OK thanks guys. I'm not too fussed about Root again right away, so I presume I'm heading into ODIN to flash the official Samsung Firmware then?
I've downloaded the latest JB Leak for the International variant (i9300), however I've just been reading that you can flash/install the OFFICIAL POLAND JB FIRMWARE to the phone and just change the language settings? Don't suppose you know how true this is do you?

yes, as said beforehand, CSC includes region specific settings whereas you can run the rom also without CSC (did this with CSC unknown for quite some time, to not get CSC unknown just flash the rom twice, to change the CSC you can use an app from the market designed to change CSCs easily).
Kernel/Radio is not included in the CSC, here you can flash, if you wish, any kernel suitable to your region of that gives you best reception.

[HELP]Gingerbread to CM10(or paranoid)attempt, using CWM - gives infinite CWM booting

I have Gingerbread which is (according to my understanding) what is considered 'stock'
I downloaded CM10 and tried to install it using CWM but after a reboot I got infinite CWM booting (reboot back to CWM, reboot back to CWM forever)
Got told that it was because I didn't have stock and I needed to go
[MY CURRENT ROM] ==> [STOCK ROM] ==> [CM10]
but my current rom IS STOCK ROM, cause it is gingerbread...
then I was told that after the [STOCK ROM] stage I had to upgrade to [STOCK ROM] of android 4.x
cause that was the *ONLY* (is it?) way to also upgrade to boot loader which is needed to host the CM10 in my phone,
but I was too afraid to loose root
(thus loosing the option to use CWM, which I had no interest in..)
so I gave up on this path
>>> Could I get stock 4.x for my phone and use Mobile Odin Pro to root it and then install it safely without the fear of loosing root apon installation?
Instead I tried upgrading Gingerbread to paranoid of the same android prefix (2.x), since my gingerbread android rom is 2.3 and paranoid android rom is 2.5 there should not be any more any of the
"bootloaders upgrade only by installing stock roms" nonsense anymore..
so I went here:
http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/i9100g
Since I do have Samsung Galaxy S 2 GT-I9100G
and tried to install paranoid via CWM the same way - it let me back to infinite CWM booting once again....
then I was told that (from some unknown reason) it is because I didn't try to install it over stock rom or some other nonsense...
but GINGERBREAD IS STOCK... --__--'
I am clueless right now...
all I want is to get out of this useless crashy gingerbread into something more modern, what am I doing wrong? why do I always end up in infinite CWM booting?
what the tutorials I'm following are missing that I keep not doing which makes me end up in this situation every rom I try to install?
what is it, that one magical step that I don't do, that solves everything up and stops screwing up my installations attempts?
please.. help.. ty..
Do a clean upgrade through samsungs pc software(i believe it is or was called kies), cm10 is based on android 4.1.2 so you should have this version of stock rom installed since the rom is dependent on kernel which is changed with new versions of android. You cant run jelly bean rom with gingerbread kernel
Stock rom is every rom for your device officially provided by manufactorer not just the one you got your phone with, I think that you might have been mislead

[Q] Samsung galaxy s2 firmware problem

Hi there,
I have the galaxy s2 from about a year ago, bought it form Dubai. Anyways till now I still didn't get the jelly beans update 4.1.2 and I'm stuck with the 4.0.3. I'm starting to face some problems with my device and I think this is because bugs in the 4.0.3, the device over heats while charging or when I have my wifi or 3G on. I downloaded the "AOKP MR1 Milestone 1 ROM for Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 (Exynos)" along with "Gapps" but didn't install them yet:
The only problem is that in order to install the new rom I have to flash my device and root it and I'm not really happy with that. Is there a safe way to get the jelly beans update 4.1.2 without rooting my device. I tried the over the air update but it said no updates found, I also tried kies and still no luck. What can I do to get the new update without having to erase everything on my device.
Also can I take a backup copy of my ROM in case I format "flash" my device for any reason. I want to take a complete backup of everything on my phone including the unrooted original firmware 4.0.3 that it came with so that even if I install any other rom I can flash it and get back with my original one, is this possible.
Please help, looking forward for your repiles

I'm actually very new to xda, I've been searching for about 4 days now and currently I'm reading other similar threats on xda. But I don't really know where or what to search for. All I want to do is update my phone without flashing it, also if it's possible to take a backup copy of my original firmware please reference me where to start. Didn't mean to bother or bug anyone here, it's just that I'm very new to this
No hard feelings
You need to root to bk up what you have now mate. 4.0.4 is the brick bug firmware not 4.0.3 . Do you want to root your phone.? Do you want to put a custom rom or Samsung rom on your phone?
Just go to sammobile.com firmware page.

To root get a dori ics kernel and flash that either with odin "tar" or in recovery "zip with sig" put on ext sd and update in stock recovery and that will give you root and cwm recovery when you have done that go back into recovery and do a nandroid bk up there. Get titanium back up in playstore and bk up your apps with. I link my contact's with google so they restore easily.
Just see chow to flash ROM's witch odin and choose ROM from Samsung development sub forum.
Thank you all for your replies,
I managed to root my device and advised by all of you, and I made backup using the cwm that was installed automatically after I successfully rooted it. In the backup folder that was created I noticed a file called "system.ext4.tar" is this the original android version that came with the phone because as I mentioned above I want to be on the safe side and have a backup of my original OS that came with the phone in case of anything went wrong then I can restore everything including the original current android version. Second step that I want to do is to flash my phone and install the jellybeans. I found two version version 4.1.2 which I know is compatible with the phone and version 4.2.2 but I'm not really sure if it's compatible or not. So what do you guys suggest I should install on my device
looking forward for your replies

A special thanks goes to andrewwright I prefer stock but I don't have any problems trying custom since custom gives more features
If you would tell me how to do both I'll be more than happy. I think both are flashed in the same way but correct me if I'm wrong
