hi i just did this for fun as i own them and i want to know how good their cameras are compared to each other.
the devices are
-HTC EVO 4G LTE
-Samsung Galaxy S3
-Samsung Note II
-iPhone 4s
all devices are still stock no modification or camera modification performed
all photos are take with the built in camera app so no 3rd party camera app
all images in this samples are cropped 100% taken within the same time and with the same objects and conditions.
i dont claim this to be acccurate as i said before that this is unofficial
and i only did it out of my own curiosity
so here it is.

Samsung Galaxy S3 / Samsung Note II vs iPhone 4s
iPhone 4s VS HTC EVO 4G LTE
the good news are:
-HTC EVO 4G LTE Camera are much better than Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note II
the HTC images are obviously sharper, better colours and less noisy.
the bad news are:
-still no phones can "touch" the iPhone's camera
I'm using the iPhone 4s in this comparisons as i don't have the iPhone 5 yet still not availabe yet in my country
but even the 1 year old iPhone 4S beats all of the newer Android devices in terms of camera.
but i feel i can say that HTC Evo 4G LTE has the best camera of all current android phone line up.
(samsung Galaxy S3 and Note II are using the exact same camera module and camera app
their picture comes out to be exactly the same, so i just one of them in this comparisons.)
all i need to do now is to install the HQ camera mod for the EVOLTE and hoping it can beats the iPhone camera ( but crossing my fingers on this cause the camera in iPhone 4s is really really good. and i wonder how about the iPhone 5 )
oh yeah and i forgot to mentions
the HTC eve 4G LTE has the best camera app compared to all the devices in this test
and also the f2.0 on the EVOLTE does help when you want the picture your taken to have those "bokeh" a blurry background shots like some of those expensive DSLR.
With the sense 4.5 cam installed it blows away the I5 and S3. Attached are only 3 test shots, one of each. But I have may more to prove. I can't attach full rez images, but you can still tell. You can really tell with full rez zoomed up. I know white balance on the evo sucks, but other than that it kills. See the purple fringing on the I5?

well i dont have an iphone 5 yet so icant really comment on the purple fringging problems
but compared to the iphone 4s, the iphone is way sharper than the HTC and the Samsung.
and i'm not a proffesional photographer either, but when i bought a DSLR or any other camera, what i looking for is the sharpness, and noise.
and the iphone 4s picture quality is noticably sharper and less noisy. the second place goes to EVOLTE , the Samsung is very noisy and not sharp at all.
colour wise dont really matter as you could easilly correct this problem on the PC/Mac.
BTW how can i have the sense 4.5 camera
thx ?
Here you go. 4.5 is alot better than 4.0. Mainly because you can adjust the compression rate. I can really tell the difference when I do 0 compression. BTW, It's for the OneX but has been confirm to work perfect on the evo 4g lte. Make sure you adjust the settings to sharpness -2 and contrast +1. I've found these optimizes the IQ. I know the WB can be corrected, but it'll be just more convenient if it came out right in the first place.

I don't know if it's true or not! Because i try my camera ( viper4g rom ) with the iPhone 5 of my boss and the quality of the picture was better on my cell! Evo lte and he was like , then i said yeah my phone is better

Idk but when the evo LTE is taken off of widescreen, the quality is amazing for a cell phone. But not that amazing for a f.2.0, the LTE pretty much kills the iPhone when used to focus. But to point and shoot the iPhone does a better job at focus metering. That being said, when both cameras used to full potential, day or night. The evo cant be touched.

Pics at night or in low light conditions suck on my lte and iPhone 4s.

Since i work and play with all the devices and own S2,S3, EVOLTE and had iSuck5 I can honestly say the EVO has the best camera. I did some side by side testing S3 vs iSuck and the S3 when still and focusing kills the iSuck that being said the S2 destroyed the S3 and is on par w the EVO. All in all if your buying a phone for camera then the EVO is the way to go if your buying for LTE then S3 would be the way to go.

Lmao, the iPhone 4s doesn't even have a reason to come out of my pocket at night because it can't catch anything without some sort of lighting, which means it doesnt suck at night shots,it just doesn't work at all! The evo LTE on the other hand sucks at night shots(like all phones except the n920) but atleast it will still catch the background and foreground at night. I have used a lot of cameras and use cameras daily. I must say for day, night, action the evo LTE is pretty good with the new sense 4.5 camera
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
The colors from day shots look exactly like it does in person.
Night shots on the other hand get somewhat blurry under certain conditions, but also one of a few devices that can take decent low light shots.

^^^^^^^ yep. My Note II, my wife's Iphone5 both can't do low light for jack. Evo LTE with 4.5 camera is hard to beat. One thing I miss about my Evo (my kid is loving it, she wouldn't even give it back to me for this Note II).
It's amazing how much the photo quality can differ purely from tweaking backend settings for the camera.
i.e. Until a few months ago I was an engineer at Research In Motion. I'd hang out with the camera department sometimes and we'd play with different prototypes and camera settings. The bottom line is trying to find the sweet spot that'll work for most situations for most people using the abilities of the camera sensor.
fyi, The OS7 Blackberrys use the same camera sensor as the iPhone4
Really enjoy this EVO LTE camera !

Now i doubt we see this version of sense as stated in the article its likely to be first seen on the new phones.....So itll likely be Sense 3.6 for us and thats it, and the Dev's will bring us greatness soon as those devices hit the streets. Though ill likely be getting one of those devices anyway. lol
Sense 4.0 likely to be shown off along with some other devices at their event at MWC on 2/26.

oh haha i guess i should've specified i dont want it on my 3d that doesnt make much sense to have the buttons when there are 4 perfect ones right below. i like how on the galaxy nexus the screen is extra tall so that the buttons can be there without stealing any screen space that would normally be there but when u want it like for video playback or who knows what the buttons can go away and now u got this super giant screen. from what that article says it sounds like htc isnt going to be implementing that on future devices which i hope changes.
OMG!. universal Beats?!?
Great stuff!
Saw 3.6 and was actually quite impressed with the polish and hints of ICS menus. But now reading this just makes its so much better.
HTC's Sense was the best skin on Android back then (well, still is from other manufacturers) and that's when they wanted to stand out and make the android experience a better one. In the middle they kind of stagnated, didn't improve it much but by this line on Androidandme site:
If you think that custom skins are too intrusive, we’re sure you’ll be pleased to hear that HTC Sense 4.0 is a “step in the right direction".

Well some of the Sensation guys seem to feel overly confident about devices getting updated to Sense 4.0....stating that the "The Incredible S, Desire S, Desire HD..." all got sense updates recently...
me personally i think we only see it if/when a dev ports it. I think this update to ICS will be the last one we get unless google releases a big bug update to ICS thats important before the end of the year...

I was kinda under the impression that the GS2 (soon to be replaced by Nexus) and iPhone were Sprint's flagship phones... I doubt we'll get Sense 4.0 simply because it will probably be on some hot new Sprint device and they want you to go out and buy it so that you can experience Sense 4.0

EVO Pros:
Dedicated Camera Button
Kickstand
Available May 18th (Sad, sad, sad.)
SGS3 Pros:
+100mAH size battery
Removable battery
Tossup:
Screen (SuperIPSLCD2 vs Pentile Super AMOLED)
Screen Size (4.7 vs 4.8)
Sense vs Stockwiz
Camera (Better lowlight photos vs newer sensor model)
GPU/Processor (100% same on US variants)
Design (Most would say the EVO is better designed)
No stated release date for Sprint's SGS3 variant.
SGS3 Pros:
S-off
There's no reason to believe the EVO 4G LTE won't get S-off eventually though, I hope.

The SGS3 doesn't have S-Off; that's an HTC only deal. It doesn't even have a bootloader, technically. That's what Odin is for. It's a huge pita for switching between stock and AOSP roms. He's been trolling around all HTC phones' forums telling people how much "better" the Samsuck Plasticky s3 is. Pathetic.
To the OP: Wait till the S3 comes out to the US, go to the store and try them both. There's no point asking other people's opinions. Doesnt matte which one you pick it will be able to
- make phone calls
- send text messages
- watch videos
- take photos
- surf the internet
- play games
You will be happy.
I don't care if the s3 has quad core a15 lte and 4 gigs of ram that is the ugliest piece of plastic I've ever seen... Just my opinion. And the blue one is purple

It doesn't work at all with odin. You have to have a windows PC or windows running on your mac. I had a problem with a GNEX and had to find a windows pc (one I had buried in storage that barely works) in order to fix that phone. Real pay.
Honestly using a mac for fastboot commands is real easy, but and .exe root, program (like odin), etc will not work on a mac.
That being said...here is what I base my opinion on. I have owed the following phones in the following order. OG Evo-> Evo 3d (disappointment) -> epic 4g touch (cool phone, horrible radios, etc) -> iphone 4s (7 months...great phone honestly, but iOS really got on my nerves) -> GNEX (great stock experience...but the screen and horrible battery life resulted in me re-selling it two weeks later) -> Evo LTE
The epic 4g touch was fast...and I gave it to my fiancee because it she loved the screen, and I got the iphone 4s. Well, the epic always gave us radio/cell signal problems. Sprint even credited my account $50 for it once and promised a fix. That fix never came. About a month back my fiancee was in a bad accident and could not call out to 911 due to no signal bug in the phone. I was pissed...and sprint gave her an upgrade, free of charge and a year and a half early, as a result. She is getting the Evo Lte as well...as soon as wirefly gets it to here. The GS3 may not have this problem...but it is a samsung and they often do, but I am not trying to bash it. I know my fiancee refuses to own a samsung now. I would never go that far....
But the Evo 4g LTE is hands down the best phone I have EVER owned. Better than the epic 4g touch, and it blows away the iphone 4s (which was better than the epic tough in my opinion). The screen is amazing, the radio (signal and 3g speeds) are great. The camera is fantastic (I did my own indepth experiment with the iphone 4s and evo lte..and the evo lte beat the iphone in every category including the camera). The battery life best my iphone 4s, and is what android has need for a long time. This phone has a few minor software bugs, but these will no doubt be fixed. Plus, if you are into roms, etc...this phone will not fail you. Some of the best devs I have ever seen are migrating here...plus the evo community is moving this way. The evo community is a shining example of what you want in a developer community for a phone. What is even better is this...you don't even need to root this phone unless you want to. It is the complete package out of the box.
I made the mistake of buying the galaxy nexus off ebay...and the screen and even more so the battery life made it unsuitable for my needs. Therefore I sold it (recouping the money) and sold the iphone 4s (shipped it today)...and still payed about full upgrade cost for this phone (got it off ebay for 550). I am not one to spend my money like that...I am rather tight (ask my fiancee)...but this was well work the cost. Is the Evo LTE $200 better than the iphone 4s? If you want a simple, iconic phone...then no. But the ability's of android combined with the screen size and quality alone made the Evo LTE worth the cost and more.
I say go get this phone. If you wait for the GS3...it will be great too...but no better than this phone. Plus, there is always something better around the corner. If there is a big advantage IOS has over android, it is the yearly refresh. Eliminates buyer remorse, etc.

Any Samsung phone. They have an interface for Odin, which is really the bootloader, but it's a program you run on a Windows box. There is no actual bootloader on a Samsung smartphone, just the interface for Odin.

Well Mobile Odin took out the need for a computer almost completely. Only time I actually needed to use a pc was to initially root & to unroot/return to stock before I sold back to BB.

I know everybody wants to switch to a new phone, and one of the reasons is the newest htc camera is so much better than anything else...or is it? Maybe waiting one more generation is the way to go.....http://www.gsmarena.com/pureview_blind_test-review-773.php
This thread says otherwise
well of course it does, they all own the phone and they are coming from older phones. Fact is no one in the 1000 people sampled could pick out the htc photos. Well maybe thats a good thing?
There is alot more to a smartphone than its camera, the evo 3d is the exception because 3d is the headline feature.....point being HTC has designed a good phone (albeit with a few niggles for a selected bunch of models), The camera is the cherry on the cake, now people can decide if they want the whole experience i.e. the cake, or just the cherry i.e. the standout feature from the proverbial or literal sh**

That might not be true, actually cell phones are so much alike that one phone having a much better camera than the others might turn out to be it's biggest feature. At any given moment there might be almost as many people taking pictures with a cell phone as there are making a call, heck a lot of people just text or use it for web surfing.
I think the real question here is, what camera would meet YOUR standards? There are a lot of people out there who say the camera is raising the bar, and obviously, you're a skeptic. Am I right?

I would love to have the lte\one x camera on my evo3d, i'm not that great at taking pictures and would like to get better. I just like to read and found the camera comparison to be quite interesting. Maybe I should have said camera great but not the greatest? Let me add one thing, is there anyone who wouldn't want this camera on their next phone? And i mean camera only. That would be raising the bar by a huge amount.

Thats not exactly what I mean.... You don't buy the phone JUST based on the camera alone... Its the whole package.... The one x camera is great, but in these tests all the settings have to be equal and thats a user oriented thing as to how each individuals perception of a good quality image is, there are too many variables.
IMO HTCs camera settings have never been the best straight out the box... My desire hd had that issue and the same with the evo 3d, but then its to my taste and everyone's is different, unless the image is just **** lol

But, you do realize that the One Series and the EVO 4G LTE were both completed by design and announced before official rumors of the S3 was complete. So, of course Samsung would 1up the competition. It's just like if a new phone is announced later in the year, it's obviously gonna have better specs than one that was designed before.
And HTC definitely didn't lose their ass with this new phone (Especially the EVO 4G LTE). The One series is a step in the right direction for the company. No more quantity over quality. They're taking things down the right road this time.

What I meant by lost their ass is by pitching a huge marketing campaign based on the power of their new cameras and than they get beat out.
I stumbled on this post searching for something. What a dumb post. Just delete his whole thread. I myself am.dumber for reading it. Camera quality is subjective when quality is this good. No one is using a phone to take aerial photos of property to show off. HTC has a hit. S3 is good but another same looking samsung phone. What innovation there. I am a big Samsung fan but S3 is a disappointment on looks and design for its exterior.

Sorry you didn't like the article, i thought it was interesting to see a phone have a camera that good and somewhat surprised to see the htc phone rated that low. The phone was a hit at the last show because of the camera, they rated it a top 5 show item. I would think these people are more knowledgeable in the phone technology area, they certainly are smarter than mehttp://www.engadget.com/2012/06/18/nokia-808-pureview-united-states/ I did also see that engadget has their review up for the S3 and they say the S3 camera, except for a faster shutter, is not much better than the S2. They also say the camera is about the same as the htc camera. So while that makes the cameras both pretty good I guess they are not a huge leap forward.http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/20/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review-shootout-atandt-vs-sprint/

Nice picture, no doubt, but if htc took the time to install a 3d camera on last years flagship phone, maybe a year from now they could install something similar to the nokia's camera and have something that is actually a "huge" improvement. We are now shown the technology is there and is being used and mass produced.
Not sure if anyone else is experiencing or noticing this, or if it's just me, but the pictures produced by my HTC One are often soft around the edges while sharp in the middle and seem to have a fair bit of noise. Attached are sample images. I have not unlocked the bootloader, it is completely bone stock.

Not sure if just me or if my expectations of the camera were higher than they should have been.
The camera is one of questionable execution. 4mp bundled with a high quality image sensor capable of 13mp and image cpu. I would not be surprised if HTC releases a camera update that lets the end user choose above 4mp.
I'm still skeptical of the camera but this phone is the most powerful I've owned.

yea same dmobile1337. i dont know if i have to change some setting or what. every time i take a picture, i notice lots of noise and when i zoom in a little, clarity is significantly gone. i know a 4mp cant have the same res as a higher mp camera but after reading that the htc one camera is short of amazing, i am now starting to wonder if i got a defective unit.
wrong section
and i think the camera is fine give the devs some time and its going to get lots better the default camera on the onex was great after some tweaks it was OMFG !!! good
The softness is the ois. If you read anandtechs review he points this out. Its a software bug I imagine HTC will fix.

It is kind of awkward for HTC to brand an "enhanced" 4mp camera for it's "epic" phone, but then again compare it to other phones on the prepaid side that are still stuck with 5mp cameras and run on decent hardware, the quality is noticeably better on the HTC one.
The unit is not defective, I doubt HTC would have left out the option to utilize a high quality 4mp mode with the ability to shoot in higher resolution.

The Camera is Beautiful take i assure you. i mean its not no SLR but still :good: this is a picture of the virgin Mary statue i have in my home
I've had the same problem. If I take a picture of something, the entire picture doesn't seem in focus. There's usually a corner of the picture that's blurry or soft and it's really aggravating me. After what all the reviews said about the camera I'm just not seeing anything to be impressed about. It's also really noisy like someone else said.

Yeah, camera feels not much better than my note 2 personally, but I wish I still had it so I could compare and find out, as it is I've just got a samsung focus flash to compare with, and of course that offers no real comparison.

That picture looks great! Tell me though, are you stock or running a custom rom? The international base is a later revision than stock ATT and I read somewhere when I was drunk (so I guess it might have been nothing but I remember reading it...) that HTC made some camera improvements later on. Makes me wonder if those are in the base that the international version is running, or that the lion's share of custom roms available to us are on.
Not trying to gripe, I love everything about this phone. In fact, it's such a great device that I expect it is something I am doing wrong or something that HTC has already fixed that hasn't trickled down yet.
I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality of pictures, particularly in daylight.

Just finished unlocking the bootloader, installing a recovery and getting AR HD installed. It was clearly a random software issue that not everyone is experiencing, and has been corrected. My camera seems better than ever at the moment. Thank you all!
Its because the international ROMs have updated software. Past several ROM leaks improved the camera, video, and other stuff

They are probably busy compatibility testing their preloaded apps or making updates and tweaks of their own for performance. Or making sure that if you use one of their preloaded apps on the new build it doesn't brick the device or something horribly sinister like that. I am an instant gratification type, but working in corporate america taught me that software updates are far from an overnight thing. I wish it had come out closer to release so I didn't have to install a custom ROM but I am sincerely glad I took the time to do so. Back button hold for menu is a real life saver in some apps and the camera improvements are worth it as well. If you choose to wait and keep stock, good things are right around the corner.
Hi!!!
I have recently become phone-less, I had an HTC One, which I gave to my brother for his birthday, then I purchased the Nexus 5. Yestarday I dropped the Nexus from ~2ft, onto carpet, and the internal LCD cracked, the glass was fine. I called Google and THANK GOD they let me return it. Right now it is between the HTC One Max and the Moto X. Please give your honest opinions of the Max, I'll be eternally grateful!!
:laugh::good:
Thanks,
Alex

HTC one max man. If you liked HTC one you will love this thing. Screen blows Moto x away but phone is big. If you don't like the added size it won't be a good phone for you. If a big phone doesn't bother you go for the max!!

That's the two I am considering as well. I honestly like the size of the Note 3 better, but I am HTC guy to the bone. I have owned about 8 of them. I like sense alot more than Samsung's touchwiz garbage. If someone could make a HTC Sense rom work on a Note 3, my decision would be made, LOL.

I don't know.... The back is what I despise, the leather-textured plastic crap don't cut it for me.
Pros and cons for both phones....
HTC Pros:
Screen size, clarity and brightness
Signal wifi and LTE are great just like every htc device
Aluminum body/build quality these are top notch
Sense UI i absolutely love sense over any other android ui so big pro for me
Speakers once again boom sound speakers will blow any other phone out there out of the water
Sdcard not often we see an htc with an sdcard
HTC Cons:
Size. phone is huge im 6'4" with big hands and i can barely reach everything i need to. But it is basically a two hand device for the majority of people
Camera doesnt have OIS and only a 4 up i have never been a big fan of the whole up movement and dont think the pictures are terrible but not as good as others (aka note 3, s4, etc)
Little features it lacks as well compared to note 3 would be s pen, multi windows, high screen sensitivity for use with gloves little things like that
Development. While the phone does have s-off, unlocked etc etc there is no roms for verizon you can use xposed all you want but no custom roms
Somewhere in the middle
Battery. While the battery life is great always lasted me a full day from when i get up til i go to bed would be nice if you could remove battery and replace with a charged one but not a huge deal
Note 3 time....Pros:
Screen size and ppi while it is not as bright as htc one max it does have like a 13 ppi higher not a big deal here though lol
Removable battery and sdcard, nice to have both and battery lasts just as well as htc one max
Camera the 13mp shooter does better then htc i think and also 4k video not available on any other device
Little features as mentioned above. s pen, multi windows, high screen sensitivity for use with gloves, ambient temp/humidity sensor little things like that are nice to have especially now in the winter lol
Development (for me at least) i have developer edition so i have unlocked bootloader and full recovery and access to tmobile and verizon roms and kernels. Now the verizon retail does have safestrap and multiple roms to choose from
Note 3 Cons:
Speaker. I will be honest it straight up sucks! worst i have ever heard i think my first android phone the droid x was better it is awful and after hearing htc one and one max they ruin you lol
Signal. wifi is always giving you connection unstable and bogs down. lte isnt terrible but isnt as good as previous s4 and htc one of course
Somewhere in the middle
Touchwiz ui not a diehard fan of it like i am sense but very nicely done
Build quality. not bad at all but not quite up to par with htc one and one max. fake leather back isnt bad but black does feel better then white.

@oneandroidnut nice post thanks
i would still suggest not adding the size as a con.. its the size which is a pro for this device, ppl who buy the device majorly love big screens. Screen is a turn off for me with saturated colors, that's again personal like the size.
and the camera, i won't say its the best camera, however, it is the best usable camera practically. Low light pic's blow out any other phone and due to the bigger size of the phone, users hold the phone real solid before taking the pic resulting in a better picture without OIS. Zoe/Highlight + themes + music = beautiful stuff in Sense 5.5
development is slow to start off, but HTC seems to do a better job than Samsung at the stock, which counts for stock users
S-pen & other gimmicks are genuine feature that is not there on the MAX however S-Pen is not useful for me and many other note users who have migrated from Samsung.

i agree that i like the size but phone will way to big for the majority of people. and the screen has the best colors of any display to me. the amoled samsung are the over saturated ones.
camera is better in low light but thats about it. my note 3 are sharper and better for just normal light photos.
we will see i hope development picks up on one max i could use a custom rom or two
while i may not need it, it is nice to have. i can use note 3 with s pen if my hands are all nasty, if i have gloves on, etc etc while max or others i cannot. and trust me multi window is nice and not a gimmick
