S2 Possibly Bricked Hard! Need Help Please!! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think my phone is dead. Need help bad.
I went to flash gapps 20121011 in recovery. When recovery loaded I saw this:
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log/last_log
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log/last_log
I didn't take much notice. I went on to install gapps 20121011 and the phone restarted. Resurrection logo (Custom ROM I am using) kept on loading. I went back to recovery and I couldn't wipe the cache, it would freeze.
I tried to mount EMMC and I get this: E:can't mount /emmc/
I tried reflashing the ROM, but it got stuck on 50% in AROMA installation. Stayed like that for a very long time before I turned the phone off.
I then tried to use Odin to flash a stock ROM via download mode, Odin recognised my phone and when I started it, nothing would happen, it will just stall
Then when I turned my phone off after waiting for a long time, I get this message with a yellow triangle in the middle and 2 computers side by side: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies.
Every time I turn off and on my phone I get that message.
I have a USB jig and can get into download mode. Nothing seems to work.
Please, I really appreciate the help here. How can I get this phone to work again?

Does it make a difference if it's ICS? I was trying to use Odin to flash stock GB version which is pretty old and it didn't work, just did nothing and stalled.
I'm downloading stock ICS as we speak. It's 717MB.

There should be no difference. If GB doesn't work your only choice is ICS. Don't flash 4.0.4 just to stay safe

Tried to flash ICS and this time I get a hint of green bar progress but stalls at cache.img. So far 25 minutes with no progress.
GB stalled on NAND Write Start!! which is the next one up.
Is it screwed?

There is some hope. Try to get help in existing threads: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449771 and forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886. Do not do anything before some knowledgeable guy give you some advice.

You should have the correct drivers installed right? You can try installing kies again and this time make sure everything has been installed correctly.

I installed Kies when I first got the phone and installed the correct drivers.
Then I uninstalled Kies but the correct drivers remained.
Odin recognises my phone (becomes yellow, which indicates drivers are installed) and stops at a certain point. I am pretty sure if Odin recognises my phone correct drivers are installed.

Sounds like a nad usb connection to me. Try Odin with a different usb port on your pc. Or a different computer.

I did try different USB ports, same result.
Currently the same results happen here at work too. Doesn't make sense.

Can you get into recovery?
Can you get to mounts and storage?
If so I have got out of a few sticky situations by:
*Go to mounts and storage and format cache, system, data and internal SD card. (Gives you a nice clean slate)
*Connect to Odin and flash a complete 4.0.3 firmware package that includes CSC, ROM and Modem.

I can't get into recovery anymore. Just download mode.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all your assistance.
I tried all the methods listed here on another computer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449771
The last step was to .PIT and Re-Partition. I did that and now the phone is dead. Won't boot up. I have no USB Jig here, but a repair center is close by.
I gave them the phone now and let them deal with it.
I'm pretty sure they will offer a replacement as I have nooo idea what they would do that I would have done different. I tried almost everything.

My phone crashed this morning after running the daily OMFGB from the 31st for a few days. I tried to restart, it won't go past the Glitch Kernel screen. When I go into recovery, I am greeted with this message:

E: can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log

wiping data, did not help. reflashing the rom and kernel did not help. I still can't start the phone. What are the steps I need to take to fix this as I am currently not able to use my phone at all.

Same thing happened to me yesterday..the only way I got my phone working again was to odin eb01 with the atlas 2.2..reboot fully...I then tried to go back to cm7 and got the same message and the only way I was about to fix it was to flash the com rom 2.0 obviously wipe everything before..let that boot and tried to flash cm7 with the recovery from com rom....still same message...i had to odin otb3.x.x.recovery... Download times infinity's recovery zip and flash that in otb recovery, then reboot recovery so I had ti's purple recovery...wipe everything and flash cm7...and success! I used the 7/17 build cause I didn't want nightly then rebooted from power button menu and flashed glitch and gapps.

I have same thing, but I cant get the phone to show in download mode to odin anything
Same here. I'm now stuck in a boot loop. I can't even restore a backup.
Edit: Just tried to do a restore and the MD5 Sums don't match. I've had to do Odin reset three times today.
I think I might do Vodoo and try to restore that way. I will report back.

No I don't think its omfgb related cause I've never ran that rom but I do think it has something to do with all the different recoveries we have floating around and so many different builds with different formats things are bound to get screwed up...my problem came from forgetting to wipe before flashing a different kernel and got me stuck in a boot loop.

I've had this problem ever since I got my Fascinate and tried to get CM7 on it. (2 days ago) I was always able to flash new builds just fine if I managed to get into the orange recovery and not the CM7 one. I believe the one I used was the one on ROM Manager.
This is kinda upsetting...

Its not the quickest but it should get you back...odin eb01 with the atlas 2.2pit...and reboot. Then odin recovery boot immediately to recovery via 3 finger salute...wipe everything and flash the rom you want...I've had good luck with cwm 3-30 fix all or otb 3x.x.x....if you want to go to cm7 odin the fixed recovery in jt's post and flash cm7 from that recovery....the sticky in the dev section...going from cm7/miui/gb to any other rom should give you some good info and instructions

Yup...boot into the otb 3x.x.x recovery and flash the times infinity.zip and then select reboot recovery while in cwm and it should go from the otb one to the times infinity one...at that point wipe everything and flash cm7 build 7/17..not the nightly....once your on the mtd build you can flash the nightly if you wanted

Edit: I suppose you could just odin times infinity's recovery...I just happened to have the zip on my sd handy so thats why I did it that way...it was that recovery that worked so you could odin it if you wanted it's in the link you posted try flashing it from ti's recovery..I just got there a little differently
Any suggestions if you cant get odin to recognize the phone? Ive tried three Win7 machines both x86 and x64 and three different cables...ALL of them say unknown device. Ive tried pointing to both the Sammy drivers and the nexus ones with no luck.
My phone was revived by simply doing the atlas odin method. I then flashed a fully rooted image...and from there on it's child's play. With that said, I can't get into download mode now, to odin things. What could be causing that? Not, very urgent, because at the moment the phone is running like it should
Thanks so much!
OK so I copied infinity times cwm red to phone and applied that. I still got message about cache. I ran the cwm4 from recovery and now Im back to square one again. I can try to install a ROM, but it boot loops everytime. Can my phone be revived w/o odin? Do I need an updated update.zip file?

unfortunately a boot loop normally requires odin...use the eb01 tar and the atlas 2.2pit and your phone will be back up and running
From there I would flash com rom and reboot then if you wanna take a stab at cm7...try and flash it with the com rom recovery...if it doesn't work you can just try odin'ing different recoveries as long as you don't let the phone boot fully you can simply pull the battery and try to odin a different recovery.try the one from com rom, the 3-30 fix all, ti's recovery, or jt's fixed recovery...I don't know where I got the file but I also have a recovery named fixed 3 x.x for cm7 but I came remember where I got it.it is important that you let eb01 sit for a few minutes after booting and also let com rom sit for a few minutes after flashing also...I just skipped all the setup stuff to get the main screen and then pulled the battery and started flashing

Try holding the down button while you plug into your wall charger then just move it to your pc...if that doesn't work...clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol...with the phone off.at worse case there is a jig you can manually force download mode...you can buy or make them

Galaxy S3 Stuck on Boot Screen after Flashing a ROM

Hi, I'm new to these forums and need some help!
I just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 yesterday using the Odin ver 1.85 tool and it was working perfectly all day. I was doing a little research as to how you can use custom ROMs and so I decided to give it a try.
I downloaded the ROM Manager application and flashed the ClockworkMod Recovery that comes with it before attempting to flash a ROM. I then proceeded to download the CyogenMod ver. 9.1.0 that comes with ROM Manager as well. I made sure to make a backup of my current ROM on both my internal and external SD cards and then went ahead and flashed the Cyogen ROM using the application. I also chose to wipe the data/factory reset before confirming.
After the process was done, the phone rebooted with the Cyogen logo and it was all working fine for the first 2 minutes. Then all of a sudden while going through the new ROM's screens, my phone rebooted showing the "Samsung GALAXY S III GT-I9300" message and with a little red "!" mark on the top left. It stays like that all the time. I tried turning the power off and taking out the battery but it always goes back to that screen immediately after.
I'm able to go into the ClockworkMod recovery by holding the volume up+power+home buttons but I see the following lines below:
ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.3.2
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
I've tried wiping the cache, wipe data/factory reset, and wiping the dalvik cache options but it doesn't seem to work. I also tried flashing the ROM again from the SD card, but when I try to do it, it says "E: Can't mount /sdcard/". Same thing with my external SD card.
When I plug the phone to my computer, it doesn't seem to detect my device either. Is my phone bricked and will I have to get a new one if this is the case?
I tried to do some searching and this thread seems to be similar to what I'm facing but not quite as the methods suggested by the users are unknown to me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500947
I appreciate any help I can get!

I tried to flash the i9300 firmware using Odin as suggested but it failed during the process (attached screen shot). I tried doing this 2 or 3 times but I always got the FAIL message. Is there anything else I can try doing before giving up on my phone? Maybe I flashed the wrong file?

Doesnt matter - try EME2 that's in the first post.
You will probably end up with an ODIN fail again but its worth trying...

The article states that you should user root66 and Linked boot chains for your device.
This sounds like it might help with OP problem.
He for sure has wrong kernel ... that is similar enough to work but screw is mounting point. Try change kernel with odin ... then flash with odin twrp or philz recovery and flash a proper rom

I have the same problem and still searching the forums for an answer.

[Q] Bricked S3, please help.

Hello everyone, i am facing a great wall of desperation, i woke up today to find my mobile stuck on samsung logo, and i noticed it's not responding, i booted to my CWM recovery and it kept generating these errors :
E:can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: open /cache/recovery/log
E:can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: can't open /cache/recovery/last_install
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/last_install
i tried wiping data but keeps generating same errors to the internal SD card with a unique error : E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 .
i looked for a custom recovery file that i can install using ODIN but they're all in .img form not .tar.md5 so i didn't know what to do with them, phone doesn't recognize .img to install directly from sd card.:crying:
i tried using odin to install custom recovery tar.md5 file but didn't fix anything,
i tried installing this rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-archidroid-v2-4-6-power-hands-t2354859 ) using the ( mount external sd card ) and transfering rom zip file and installing it via CWM recovery interface, the installation was succesful but still can't boot due to the mentioned errors .
i tried using ABD thingie but for somereason it just won't recognize my phone, while odin does, i tried installing and reinstalling samsung usb driver and ABD drivers but still didn't help,
my original ROM was CM 11.2 nightly.
please help i am desperate, i searched everywhere but there's always something that falls between my steps .
i am more than happy to get assistance via skype etc.
i managed to download and flash my phone with stock 4.3, but i am still facing same problem, stuck at samsung logo and same errors in CWM recovery .
Same problem
i think we might have the same problem.
samdroid posted a possible solution in my thread maybe try that?

update: i was able to access ABD command line, i tested 3 CWM recovery .img files and all 3 of them reported as (bad) by my phone .
Could be bad eMMC. If you want to be sure try flash the rescue firmware from this thread (with pit) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30087735&postcount=6
If it's still not working it's a hardware fault.

after multiple tries, it didn't work, the installation won't even initialize, it keeps saying FAIL
please anyone...help !!!!
If you're still in warranty send it in for repair. Sometimes eMMC will fail and download mode will say custom even if phone has never been flashed so they might repair it for you.

it's been long since off warranty, if there's a fix it has to be something i can do myself, sending it for repair is out of the question .

Meanwhile download CFAutoroot and make the recovery of stoock and see if there is recovery. After you find MK6 Factory with BL,AP,CSC,Modem, separated and with odin 3.9 to install and i hope that you have data backup because this eliminates everything. If this succeeds you should do restore the folders EFS. I hope that you can help if you have any problems finding the material send me a private message that I see if I can upload them to mega .

Ace is soft-bricked, can't mount /data

Hey guys, I got a Galaxy Ace from my friend (he got a new phone and this one wasn't working, so he gave it to me), and now I'm trying to fix it. But seems like this little guy will be hard to fix.
You turn it up, the logo screen show up and the boot animation starts. Shortly after, the animation will hang and will start over. I've tried booting it in recovery mode and wiping data/cache, but I get two messages when I reboot:
E:failed to mount /data (Invalid argument)
E:copy_log_files_to_data :: can't mount /dataRebooting
Any idea about how should I try fixing it?
Edit: recorded a small video, so you can have a general idea of it:

Downloaded the ROM from SamMobile and tried to flash. Odin aborts the installation few seconds after starting :s

My sister's phone had the same problem. I had used Odin successfully for my phone before, using this guide. But the same did not work for my sister's phone.
She had never rooted her phone or tweaked it in any way but suddenly one day it started bootlooping. I tried MANY guides, wiped everything, and tried a custom ROM but /data wouldn't mount. Even Odin aborted installation. I left it as a lost cause for 2 months.
Today I completely uninstalled and reinstalled Kies, installed the USB drivers and tried this guide, and used "Open Austrailia". I used Odin with pit. Somehow it worked!
Re-partition was ticked and I used the bootloader as well. Just follow the video, even if it's not your country's firmware.

I've tried your suggestion, and it worked perfectly!
After flashing the Open Australia firmware, I've download the brazilian one, repacked and flashed. Now it's all back to the normal!
Thank you very much

Boot loop
My GT-S5830i is stuck in the boot loop.
When booted into Android system recovery, it fails to wipe data/factory reset with
E:format_volume:rfs format failed on /dev/stI11
It won't boot into download mode.
Can it be fixed with an update via sdcard ?
Failing that, does anybody want it for spares !!!

Phone has no OS and can't factory reset the device!

I'm sorry for posting this here but after about almost a day searching the entire internet for a proper solution, I have given in and have created this thread. So recently I was using my phone and all of a sudden it froze, and after pulling out the battery, it hasn't able to boot. Thinking that it was just another random soft brick, I proceeded to TWRP in order to perform factory reset and wipe data in order to flash a new rom. But unfortunately I keep getting the following errors:
E: Unable to mount '/efs'
E: Unable to mount '/cache'
E: Unable to mount '/system'
E: Unable to mount '/data'
E: Unable to mount '/preload'
...done
E: Unable to mount storage
I have tried to format through adb but haven't been able to find a proper command, most require the phone to be at least booting. Please can someone help me out, I don't want to lose my data but also want to be able to use the phone again!
The problem is most likely twrp. Flash a clockworkmod recovery from the official website in .tar format. Flash via odin as you would a rom. You could also flash a stock recovery the same way.

This problem has been happening a lot recently, you might have to repartition

Exactly, not only have I tried to install cwm but also tried to upgrade twrp but even through Odin it fails and I get a NAND Write error. Any ideas on how to over come that?
This looks like my problem, but after trying to wipe in recovery, I can no longer boot into recovery at all. Download mode doesn't work either, no Samsung logo is shown, just a completely white screen.

That sounds like your phone got bricked, mine too on the verge of it....
If odin cant see the phone it's pretty much dead as you need odin to flash a stock rom. If you can get it seen by odin just flash a stock rom.

Odin is detecting the phone but I can't flash stock firmware due to some "NAND Write" error. Any ideas?
@Deathshead747, the standard way: try to flash a 3part firmware + PIT-file to repartition the internal memory. But probably it's gone
