[Q] Bricked S3, please help. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, i am facing a great wall of desperation, i woke up today to find my mobile stuck on samsung logo, and i noticed it's not responding, i booted to my CWM recovery and it kept generating these errors :
E:can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: open /cache/recovery/log
E:can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: can't open /cache/recovery/last_install
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/last_install
i tried wiping data but keeps generating same errors to the internal SD card with a unique error : E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 .
i looked for a custom recovery file that i can install using ODIN but they're all in .img form not .tar.md5 so i didn't know what to do with them, phone doesn't recognize .img to install directly from sd card.:crying:
i tried using odin to install custom recovery tar.md5 file but didn't fix anything,
i tried installing this rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/rom-archidroid-v2-4-6-power-hands-t2354859 ) using the ( mount external sd card ) and transfering rom zip file and installing it via CWM recovery interface, the installation was succesful but still can't boot due to the mentioned errors .
i tried using ABD thingie but for somereason it just won't recognize my phone, while odin does, i tried installing and reinstalling samsung usb driver and ABD drivers but still didn't help,
my original ROM was CM 11.2 nightly.
please help i am desperate, i searched everywhere but there's always something that falls between my steps .
i am more than happy to get assistance via skype etc.

i managed to download and flash my phone with stock 4.3, but i am still facing same problem, stuck at samsung logo and same errors in CWM recovery .

Same problem
i think we might have the same problem.
samdroid posted a possible solution in my thread maybe try that?

update: i was able to access ABD command line, i tested 3 CWM recovery .img files and all 3 of them reported as (bad) by my phone .

Could be bad eMMC. If you want to be sure try flash the rescue firmware from this thread (with pit) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30087735&postcount=6
If it's still not working it's a hardware fault.

after multiple tries, it didn't work, the installation won't even initialize, it keeps saying FAIL

please anyone...help !!!!

If you're still in warranty send it in for repair. Sometimes eMMC will fail and download mode will say custom even if phone has never been flashed so they might repair it for you.

it's been long since off warranty, if there's a fix it has to be something i can do myself, sending it for repair is out of the question .

Meanwhile download CFAutoroot and make the recovery of stoock and see if there is recovery. After you find MK6 Factory with BL,AP,CSC,Modem, separated and with odin 3.9 to install and i hope that you have data backup because this eliminates everything. If this succeeds you should do restore the folders EFS. I hope that you can help if you have any problems finding the material send me a private message that I see if I can upload them to mega .

S2 Possibly Bricked Hard! Need Help Please!!

I think my phone is dead. Need help bad.
I went to flash gapps 20121011 in recovery. When recovery loaded I saw this:
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log/last_log
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log/last_log
I didn't take much notice. I went on to install gapps 20121011 and the phone restarted. Resurrection logo (Custom ROM I am using) kept on loading. I went back to recovery and I couldn't wipe the cache, it would freeze.
I tried to mount EMMC and I get this: E:can't mount /emmc/
I tried reflashing the ROM, but it got stuck on 50% in AROMA installation. Stayed like that for a very long time before I turned the phone off.
I then tried to use Odin to flash a stock ROM via download mode, Odin recognised my phone and when I started it, nothing would happen, it will just stall
Then when I turned my phone off after waiting for a long time, I get this message with a yellow triangle in the middle and 2 computers side by side: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies.
Every time I turn off and on my phone I get that message.
I have a USB jig and can get into download mode. Nothing seems to work.
Please, I really appreciate the help here. How can I get this phone to work again?

Does it make a difference if it's ICS? I was trying to use Odin to flash stock GB version which is pretty old and it didn't work, just did nothing and stalled.
I'm downloading stock ICS as we speak. It's 717MB.

There should be no difference. If GB doesn't work your only choice is ICS. Don't flash 4.0.4 just to stay safe

Tried to flash ICS and this time I get a hint of green bar progress but stalls at cache.img. So far 25 minutes with no progress.
GB stalled on NAND Write Start!! which is the next one up.
Is it screwed?

You should have the correct drivers installed right? You can try installing kies again and this time make sure everything has been installed correctly.

I installed Kies when I first got the phone and installed the correct drivers.
Then I uninstalled Kies but the correct drivers remained.
Odin recognises my phone (becomes yellow, which indicates drivers are installed) and stops at a certain point. I am pretty sure if Odin recognises my phone correct drivers are installed.
Sounds like a nad usb connection to me. Try Odin with a different usb port on your pc. Or a different computer.

Can you get into recovery?
Can you get to mounts and storage?
If so I have got out of a few sticky situations by:
*Go to mounts and storage and format cache, system, data and internal SD card. (Gives you a nice clean slate)
*Connect to Odin and flash a complete 4.0.3 firmware package that includes CSC, ROM and Modem.

I can't get into recovery anymore. Just download mode.
Hi guys,
Thanks for all your assistance.
I tried all the methods listed here on another computer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449771
The last step was to .PIT and Re-Partition. I did that and now the phone is dead. Won't boot up. I have no USB Jig here, but a repair center is close by.
I gave them the phone now and let them deal with it.
I'm pretty sure they will offer a replacement as I have nooo idea what they would do that I would have done different. I tried almost everything.

[Q] stuck at boot screen after installing cyanagen 10.1

Hi Guys, hope someone can help. Ive been trawling the forums for days with no luck. I have a UK GT-I9300 on 4.1.2 rooted and with custom recovery. I installed cyanagen 10.1 but failed to wipe data / cache afterwards and now get stuck at galaxy flash screen everytime it boots. I can get to custom recovery and download screens, ive tried re-partitoning with pit file but the rom always get stuck at nand write stage. it appears that the phone is now "read only". this is really doing my head in so if any one can help i'd be really grateful.
cant mount /cache/recovery/command
cant mount /cache/recovery/log
cant open /cache/recovery/log
cant mount /cache/recovery/last_log
cant open /cache/recovery/last_log
not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Galaxy S3 Stuck on Boot Screen after Flashing a ROM

Hi, I'm new to these forums and need some help!
I just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 yesterday using the Odin ver 1.85 tool and it was working perfectly all day. I was doing a little research as to how you can use custom ROMs and so I decided to give it a try.
I downloaded the ROM Manager application and flashed the ClockworkMod Recovery that comes with it before attempting to flash a ROM. I then proceeded to download the CyogenMod ver. 9.1.0 that comes with ROM Manager as well. I made sure to make a backup of my current ROM on both my internal and external SD cards and then went ahead and flashed the Cyogen ROM using the application. I also chose to wipe the data/factory reset before confirming.
After the process was done, the phone rebooted with the Cyogen logo and it was all working fine for the first 2 minutes. Then all of a sudden while going through the new ROM's screens, my phone rebooted showing the "Samsung GALAXY S III GT-I9300" message and with a little red "!" mark on the top left. It stays like that all the time. I tried turning the power off and taking out the battery but it always goes back to that screen immediately after.
I'm able to go into the ClockworkMod recovery by holding the volume up+power+home buttons but I see the following lines below:
ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.3.2
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
I've tried wiping the cache, wipe data/factory reset, and wiping the dalvik cache options but it doesn't seem to work. I also tried flashing the ROM again from the SD card, but when I try to do it, it says "E: Can't mount /sdcard/". Same thing with my external SD card.
When I plug the phone to my computer, it doesn't seem to detect my device either. Is my phone bricked and will I have to get a new one if this is the case?
I tried to do some searching and this thread seems to be similar to what I'm facing but not quite as the methods suggested by the users are unknown to me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500947
I appreciate any help I can get!

I tried to flash the i9300 firmware using Odin as suggested but it failed during the process (attached screen shot). I tried doing this 2 or 3 times but I always got the FAIL message. Is there anything else I can try doing before giving up on my phone? Maybe I flashed the wrong file?

Yeap you are right, I should have stated that!
The article states that you should user root66 and Linked boot chains for your device.
This sounds like it might help with OP problem.
He for sure has wrong kernel ... that is similar enough to work but screw is mounting point. Try change kernel with odin ... then flash with odin twrp or philz recovery and flash a proper rom

[Q] Problem with boot, recovery, fastboot... jeeez

Hi guys, I really hope u can help me, cause i admit i did my share of research and got no solution
My N8010 was using GNABO 6.5 and Boeffla Kernel. While using it the other morning, the tablet suddenly rebooted and got stuck on the Galaxy Note screen. It stays on it a few seconds then reboot to the same screen in a loop.
I can access the recovery menu (CWM 6.0.3.6 ) but my options there are pretty limited, cant wipe and cant install zip files. At the botton of the recovery i have the following logs:
Warning: no file_contexts
E: Can´t open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can´t open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can´t open /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can´t open /cache/recovery/last_log
I read somewhere that the problem should be solved if i could install a new recovery through Fastboot. Problem is fastboot cant find my device when on bootloader (but i can find it through ADB).
Using ADB sideload to install new recovery or new ROM gave me error on CWM.
Please, save my Tabye.

Samsung devices don't support fastboot instead they have something called download mode, which you can entered powering off the device and then pressing Volume Down button + Power Button simultaneously, after a couple seconds you'll see a warning screen at the warning screen press Volume Up and the device will be in download mode. Then you can use Odin to flash a new recovery, I would recommend checking out this guide on how to flash a recovery with Odin, and this thread for a recovery you could flash for your device model. Let me know if you still have questions.

Sounds like it is time to restock with the original firmware and Odin and start over.

Another thing you could try is just flashing the stock recovery through Odin, and then flashing the new recovery you want over that in Odin.

Did you use the correct firmware? Did it pass successfully in Odin? Did you perform a factory reset after using Odin to install the original firmware?
Stock recovery can be found here:

Used correct firmware. It did pass successfully through odin. Factory reset seems broken.
I will try the stock recovery.
No success with stock recovery.
So... No way to fix at all?

To clarify even after flashing the full stock firmware, then flashing another recovery your still stuck on the recovery you were trying to replace correct?

What settings are you using in Odin when flashing the stock firmware package?

Put tar md5 file on AP/PDA, leave F Reset Time and Auto Reboot checked.
UPDATE:
I sent the tablet to a local technician and hes gonna charge me U$150 to make a repair on the board and restore the system. Does it make sense to you guys? Should i accept the service?

Phone has no OS and can't factory reset the device!

I'm sorry for posting this here but after about almost a day searching the entire internet for a proper solution, I have given in and have created this thread. So recently I was using my phone and all of a sudden it froze, and after pulling out the battery, it hasn't able to boot. Thinking that it was just another random soft brick, I proceeded to TWRP in order to perform factory reset and wipe data in order to flash a new rom. But unfortunately I keep getting the following errors:
E: Unable to mount '/efs'
E: Unable to mount '/cache'
E: Unable to mount '/system'
E: Unable to mount '/data'
E: Unable to mount '/preload'
...done
E: Unable to mount storage
I have tried to format through adb but haven't been able to find a proper command, most require the phone to be at least booting. Please can someone help me out, I don't want to lose my data but also want to be able to use the phone again!
The problem is most likely twrp. Flash a clockworkmod recovery from the official website in .tar format. Flash via odin as you would a rom. You could also flash a stock recovery the same way.

This problem has been happening a lot recently, you might have to repartition

Exactly, not only have I tried to install cwm but also tried to upgrade twrp but even through Odin it fails and I get a NAND Write error. Any ideas on how to over come that?
This looks like my problem, but after trying to wipe in recovery, I can no longer boot into recovery at all. Download mode doesn't work either, no Samsung logo is shown, just a completely white screen.

That sounds like your phone got bricked, mine too on the verge of it....
If odin cant see the phone it's pretty much dead as you need odin to flash a stock rom. If you can get it seen by odin just flash a stock rom.

Odin is detecting the phone but I can't flash stock firmware due to some "NAND Write" error. Any ideas?
@Deathshead747, the standard way: try to flash a 3part firmware + PIT-file to repartition the internal memory. But probably it's gone
