[Q] SII won't turn on! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
My Sll won't power on. Running on CM9, left it to update some apps over wi-fi, had around 50% power. Came back to find it powered off, can't turn it on.
Tried a friend's battery, still won't power on.
Any help appreciated.
PS: The Sll turns quite hot now when connected to a wall charger. Have tried to boot into download mode, no luck.

Sounds cactus. If you can get hold of a jig, you might as well try it. But it's probably a 0.000000000001% chance of working.
Why has it crapped itself ? Who knows. Electronics have a habit of dying for no apparent reason.
If it's still under warranty & you're lucky, they might not be able to tell you've been running non-stock firmware on it & replace/repair it for you. If they can tell & decide to charge you to fix/replace it, it may be able to be JTAG repaired, tho it sounds like a hardware failure to me so that may not be possible.

Jigs look scary to implement!
No idea how to use a jig, might try the service center.
Got this bought from the Middle east as it was considerably cheaper there, my bad! This is gonna burn a hole in the hole in my pocket!

Motherboard's conked, it seems.
Gonna cost me a 3rd of the phone's price to replace it!

Vibrant Will Not Boot, Hard Bricked Please HELP!

Unfortunately after my latest mishap with Odin, I cannot even turn my phone on. I have been flashing awhile and have loved all the roms that the developers have produced. The closest I have come to this was a soft-boot that many other users get. I have tried the method of removing the sd card and sim card and battery and then plugging your phone in and putting the battery in after holding down the two rocker buttons, but that did not work this time. I really hope someone could help me with the problem I have, I still love this phone
i hard bricked mine because of odin a few month ago, it froze so i unplugged and got the 'phone ! pc' screen
so when it froze again i unplugged thinking i'd get that again but i got nothing, i think it was doing the bootloaders so it was just dead
only way back from hard brick is to jtag, mine wasnt expensive and only took like a day for them to do but im in the UK
theres a few people on here that do it i think
just get it jtagged!
Where?
I saw that mobile tech videos had a service where they unbricked phones has anyone had them fix their phone or can someone recommend me to someone else who can jtag it
his name is connexion2005
pm him he jtags phones to fix them
So you see no spindles when you plug into PC or wall outlet? Not even the battery charge icon?
Yes I have nothing . But I did PM, unless I could somehow make up an excuse for Samsung I will probably have to get it JTAGED
Yup, I'd keep playing with it while you wait. Try different cords, maybe a different PC if you can, random other button combos(including the soft buttons), maybe even a different battery. But in the end jtag seems like its gonna be your fix unfortunately. Good luck!
T-mobile is giving sending me a replacement
T-Mobile is sending a replacement, but I have to hand in my own vibrant that i hardware gps fixed. Should I try to push the antenna back down so it looks like i didn't or does anyone think they will even bother looking there for any "damage"

SGS2 totaly Dead and hot during charge

My SGS2 died on me yesterday. was working all day as usual but at the afternoon when i where to make a call it wouldn't wake. Had 50% or more left on the bats for sure at the moment.
The phone where running the CM9 development rom wich has been running on it since beginning of january Last time i updated it was about a week ago. (Don't think this problem is related to the rom though)
Symptoms:
The phone is totaly dead, no signs of life on the screen. Cannot get in to download or do normal boot.
When I charge nothing happens on the screen, but after a little while the phone begins to get hot betwheen the camera and the battery (where the simcard is)
This video is not mine, but our phone seems to have the exact same symptoms.
I have tried:
Re-attaching the battery, and leaving it whitout bat for a few hours
Starting it with charger in with and whitout a battery
Tried a bettery of a friends SGS2
Pluging it to the computer, no sign of life (my computer does not react at all)
Nothing works
My thought is that this is a hardware related issue. But please correct me if I am wrong.
I haven't tried a JIG yet, will see if I have correct resistors at work tomorrow and make one. But i hardly believe it will work.
Is there any chance the JIG can reset the counter even if I wont get any life from it? or is it first after the flash to stock with JTAG the counter resets?

You're confusing JTAG with USB jig, but it's extremely unlikely to do anything. Considering the phone isn't responding to anything anyway, I also doubt the custom binary counter matters much.

Yeah you ar right, i was confusing them. But I'll try if I have the materials. And if no one else have any good advice for a fix I'll just send in the phone to Samsung tomorrow.
Thanks for your reply
mine doing the same but after a failed flash with odin

So I figure this is a hard brick tried everything u did and a jig gonna send it to Mobiletech videos for jtag fix after i get paid and hope that works.
any news?
My phone did the same last night.
cm9..
Totally dead, cannot charge. Please any advice would be great. thanks.
You could try a jig, but as per the above unlikely to work. Needs to be JTAG'd/repaired either by Samsung or a 3rd party repairer. Hopefully if you send it to Samsung they won't be able to tell the phone has had non-stock firmware on it as per Oinky's post & fix it under warranty (they may not tho).
This is going to sound odd but check you're display.
Wipe it clean and hold it at an angle against a bright lamp. Look for any small cracks or black lines.
Could the phone be water damaged?
The backup battery on the motherboard also can leak and cause problems like this
I work on the Samsung team at a service center in Norway and these are some common reasons for a dead phone like this
Could maybe be the battery on the motherboard that has leaked, but i guess i won't find out until it comes back from service.
Strange though.. Phone has been fine, just all of a sudden this. Exactly as the op describes..
I put it on the charger last night, had around 20% battery left. In the morning it was completely dead, and a bit hot. Plugged in the charger again, and the charging symbol comes up for a few seconds, disappears, comes back etc a few times, then it gets rather hot around the camera, and on the front side (screen side) and stays completely dead (no charging symbol), until it has been unplugged and let to cool down a bit.
Every time i plug it in, the same thing happens.
I'm traveling, and wont be able to send it on service until after a month's time.
alas, phone free holiday

Phone dead. Repair? But its Rooted!

Hi.
I've got a Galaxy S2 (international version, unlocked). Its worked fine until now.
Ive had it lying around for a bit after getting the S3 and thought about selling it. So i checked it out again. Battery empty so i started charging It - charding battery screen was displayed - so fine.
Then I noticed some dust in the speaker grill and I wanted to clean that out. I used my breath and a needle to get it out.
Afterwards it did not power on anymore, the screen remains black and no sound. But I did not even poke around that hard?! Can it be damaged just from that bit of cleaning?
I tried letting it lying around for a while, then pressing the power button without battery to drain all remaining electricity and finally tried both soft reset (power button for about 10 seconds) and hard reset (power button and middle button for about 10 seconds).
It did not turn on.
Then I tried turning on with my usb jig. No luck.
I tried charging the battery again (since it was about empty). No change.
Since the phone has 2 year warranty I think I considered sending it for repair. But I remembered that I had rooted it. They will not repair if its rooted I hear.
Is there any other thing I can try?
I assume this is a hardware error and a physical repair is necessary (PCB replacement?)?
Or would a JTAG suffice?
I'd even consider doing a repair myself (getting replacement part and doing a peplacement myself) if I knew whats was wrong...
Please give advice!
can you boot into download mode ?
try to get another battery. it might be just a dead battery.
I cannot boot into download mode.
While it may be a dead battery I would assume connecting it to charge via USB (and I did check that the cable is ok and does charge by checking with my galaxy s3) would allow turning it on as it originally did (got into the charging mode where it displays the battery level). It does not do that anymore.
have you tried using another battery?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I bet another battery works, this battery proberly needs some boosting to get to life again... after boosting it starts charging again...

I asked a collegue at work to charge my battery who also had an s2. So the battery definitely works on a properly working s2.
I used that battery on my s2 and it still will not boot up or show any signs of operation.
Is there a way to find out what component is damaged?
I'd like to try and replace it, but that only makes sense if I know what component is the problem.
If you're not experienced at testing/working with microelectronics, you have no chance of fixing it yourself. You're more likely to completely trash the phone if you try. That you asked a question like that suggests you don't have the knowledge/experience required.
Do the smart thing & either see if it can be JTAG'd by a 3rd party repairer, or take your chances with Samsung/authorised repairer & hope they don't notice/don't care/can't tell it's been messed with.
The other issue is, how could anyone here possibly know what's wrong with the phone specifically ? We're not there with you looking over your shoulder as you take the phone apart & we certainly don't have x-ray vision to be able to see inside the phone over distance.

[Q] Galaxy s2 wont turn on or charge, gets hot when plugged in

Hi. I was just browsing on my rooted galaxy s2. Suddenly the whole screen froze. It would not do anything, so i decided to take the battery out. When i put it back in, it turned on and was stuck on the "samsung galaxy s2 i9100" screen. So i decided to take the battery out and try again. This time it wouldnt turn on or charge. When i plug it in, it just gets hot, but there is no sign of life. I tried holding the power button and entering recovery and download mode. But its not recognised. I dont think its the battery because when i plugged it into a pc without the battery, it still wasnt recognised.
Before this happened, i was running the solo launcher and i was using a kindle paper charger for it.(first time i used this).
Please help me find a way to fix it without jtag. Usb jig won't work, its totally not functioning to anything except getting hot when plugged in.
Signs of life:
Gets hot when plugged in.
sadly bro,but it sounds like a motherboard is dead
if you have access to usb jig - atleast try it
if no joy - motherboard replacement

oh ok thanks, i am not under warranty, so could i just send it to a local repair store, or do i need to send it to samsung. If so, how much would it cost?
sent it to your local repair shop - it will be less expensive than samsung's service
you can also buy the mobo at ebay etc,and pay only for the procedure
idk about the price, mail the repair shop about that.
USB ports
When my phone was newer I had a lot of usb port trouble, overheating, failing to charge properly, even apparent bricking. I heard there was an issue with this port. I narrowed it down by sticking a small object into the USB port and levering the pin slot back up to the middle (preventing the short).
That fixed it for a while. Also fluff can create a short, so blowing it out can fix it.
It finally failed again, so I bought a $5 piece from ebay, watched a youtube video and fixed it properly.
So, try firstly blowing out the usb port, then using a toothpick to push it around a little. If that fixes your phone then all good
Yeah, that'll fix it

[Q] PHONE not responding

Eh i messed up again as usual, I hope it's not too bad...
But I sort of either hard-bricked the phone or messed up the connections while disassembling the phone.
I was disassembling it to see what USB port it had so I had an idea how it was supposed to look like, in order to buy another one because it was broken.
It still worked then, I tried getting the phone back into place when it didn't start when I pressed the power button, I plugged in the charger, no lights, no power, no bootloader, nothing, it's either DEAD or some connection isn't in place, can the battery be dead, and when I try to charge after a dead battery there should come a light, if I'm not wrong so I assume the battery is OK.
If anyone had this problem, please explain me what you did, thanks in advance
Edit: my phone's mobo is probably burnt, weird, I've done nothing wrong... Except for using the phone with apple's 12W charger (2.4Amps) but it ran on that pretty well for half a year...
Can anyone help me out getting the mobo part number or something, or even better, can I put an international one X mobo in this phone? Can anyone confirm?
Well, too expensive for a new mobo, I'm totally freaked up, lost bitcoins (around 8 cents haha)...
Now I can't sell it for another 300 after fixing, and can't afford myself a OPO, thanks all for the help, time to leave HOX+... And hTC, I've been gone through too much with the hox+ and IncS
