My SGS2 died on me yesterday. was working all day as usual but at the afternoon when i where to make a call it wouldn't wake. Had 50% or more left on the bats for sure at the moment.
The phone where running the CM9 development rom wich has been running on it since beginning of january Last time i updated it was about a week ago. (Don't think this problem is related to the rom though)
Symptoms:
The phone is totaly dead, no signs of life on the screen. Cannot get in to download or do normal boot.
When I charge nothing happens on the screen, but after a little while the phone begins to get hot betwheen the camera and the battery (where the simcard is)
This video is not mine, but our phone seems to have the exact same symptoms.
I have tried:
Re-attaching the battery, and leaving it whitout bat for a few hours
Starting it with charger in with and whitout a battery
Tried a bettery of a friends SGS2
Pluging it to the computer, no sign of life (my computer does not react at all)
Nothing works
My thought is that this is a hardware related issue. But please correct me if I am wrong.
I haven't tried a JIG yet, will see if I have correct resistors at work tomorrow and make one. But i hardly believe it will work.
Is there any chance the JIG can reset the counter even if I wont get any life from it? or is it first after the flash to stock with JTAG the counter resets?

You're confusing JTAG with USB jig, but it's extremely unlikely to do anything. Considering the phone isn't responding to anything anyway, I also doubt the custom binary counter matters much.

So I figure this is a hard brick tried everything u did and a jig gonna send it to Mobiletech videos for jtag fix after i get paid and hope that works.
any news?
My phone did the same last night.
cm9..
Totally dead, cannot charge. Please any advice would be great. thanks.
You could try a jig, but as per the above unlikely to work. Needs to be JTAG'd/repaired either by Samsung or a 3rd party repairer. Hopefully if you send it to Samsung they won't be able to tell the phone has had non-stock firmware on it as per Oinky's post & fix it under warranty (they may not tho).
This is going to sound odd but check you're display.
Wipe it clean and hold it at an angle against a bright lamp. Look for any small cracks or black lines.
Could the phone be water damaged?
The backup battery on the motherboard also can leak and cause problems like this
I work on the Samsung team at a service center in Norway and these are some common reasons for a dead phone like this
Could maybe be the battery on the motherboard that has leaked, but i guess i won't find out until it comes back from service.
Strange though.. Phone has been fine, just all of a sudden this. Exactly as the op describes..
I put it on the charger last night, had around 20% battery left. In the morning it was completely dead, and a bit hot. Plugged in the charger again, and the charging symbol comes up for a few seconds, disappears, comes back etc a few times, then it gets rather hot around the camera, and on the front side (screen side) and stays completely dead (no charging symbol), until it has been unplugged and let to cool down a bit.
Every time i plug it in, the same thing happens.
I'm traveling, and wont be able to send it on service until after a month's time.
alas, phone free holiday

Hey guys, hoping someone here can help me with this. My brother recently brought me his broken Atrix. He's a bit of an idiot and doesn't take care of his stuff and before I tear this thing apart and see if something awesome is broke I'd like to ask you guys if you've ever seen this problem. The phone will not turn on at all. Not with my battery or his, so this is obviously not a battery issue.
If the phone is plugged into an AC adapter, the phone will sometimes flash the green status light in rapid succession as well as flash the two led flash at the same time. Other times the phone will only flash the two led flash and the screen will stay off. I have put the phone on rice just in case he effed it up by somehow getting it wet, and I am leaving it unplugged and without a battery for the night.
This is likely a hardware problem, again he is careless with his things and likely broke the phone but I was checking with the community first to see if there was a fix out there or if anyone has ever ran into this problem. Thanks if anyone can help.
I have not had this problem or heard of it before...
But maybe you could try a factory hard reset (since you can not get into the phone to do the software reset)...
Or if there is no water damage (check the back under battery to see if there is discoloration of the water-damage indicator) and there is no "obvious physical damage" maybe you can bring it in to where it was purchased if it is under warranty... instead of opening it up and voiding the warranty you may or may not have.
Sorry I could not have been of more help

could i have a link to this? I don't think that this will be useful since i do not believe the phone even tries to boot. (google has said hold power and "camera buttons" what camera buttons?)
there is no indication of water damage, just normal ware on the phone. i just did it just in case.
also this phone is not under insurance or anything, so there would be no taking it anywhere.
thanks again for the reply.
You know what, I guess I was mistaken, I actually just read a couple hours ago about steps to do a hard reset, and I do infact recall reading something about a camera button... I just figured I wasn't aware of the button... But you're totally right, there definitely is no dedicated camera button on the Atrix, yet at least 5 different sites give the steps involving a camera button (I imagine it was copy and pasted from a generic "motorola hard reset" guide which doesn't apply to the Atrix, obviously)...
So yeah, sorry to say again, but I don't think I will be of much help to you,
and I only figured Motorola would offer some type of standard warranty on their hardware (assuming no physical/water damage), that's why I suggested bringing it in, but I did not even bother to look this information up, so they may not.
Err, thers a 1year warranty on the phone... Contact moto support over chat.

If you plugged it into AC before putting in rice, and there was water in there, probably guaranteed to be fu**ed now. Never ever plug a phone into AC if you know or suspect water damage. And rice overnight is not long enough............needs a few days in a bag with rice to pull all the moisture out.
Did your brother even tell you what he did with it? Dropped it, washed it, sat on it......?
Can you boot into RSD and flash a sbf?
I had my Atrix messed up last week after trying some mods. Was stuck in boot cycle. Booted into RSD mode, flashed 4.1.26, and everything was good from there.

i didn't suspect it of water damage, he likely dropped it a bunch and damaged something internally. i was just putting it on rice to make sure. but no the phone won't turn on or anything. so i'm going to send it in for replacement. thanks.
Hi all,
Need some help please.
Phone was working perfectly up until yesterday. Last night I installed JKay's Deluxe Framework for the SGS2, SGS3 Icon pack for SGS2 and Siyah Kernel. Was all working fine and battery was about 80% when i went to bed.
Woke up this morning and the phone was off. I thought the phone may have crashed / frozen so took the battery out for a few mins, inserted it and tried to switch it on without any joy. Tried this about 3 / 4 times. So thought that the battery may be dead, so connected the charger to it. I dont even the the battery charging icon showing. its like the phone is totally dead. It just wont switch on. i cant get to download mode / recovery or anything!!!
Please can someone help / give suggestions of other things I may be able to try?
THanks
No download mode or other signs of life, try a jig. Jig doesn't work - service center or possibly JTAG repair by 3rd party. You could try leaving it plugged into a charger overnight & see if you can get anything out of it. Could also try another battery I guess but I don't like your chances tbh. Unfortunately there isn't a great deal anyone can suggest in situations like this.
Service center for me. Battery icon should still appear when you plug it in using a charger and unfortunately, you cannot move forward unless you can go to the recovery and download modes.
my worry is that as the phone is rooted the warranty will be void. Samsung phones have a 2 year warranty so technically the phone is still under warranty. ive left it plugged in for the last 2 hours and still no signs of life. the phone and battery are stone cold. ive just gone out and bought a genuine second battery, and again no signs of life on the phone. am so gutted.
Cross your fingers that whomever fixes it either can't tell it's been messed with or doesn't care. Experience on here that I've seen over the past 7-8 months with similar situations (unable to go back to stock/reset flash counter before sending phone in for warranty service) seems to be about 50/50.
Not a lot you can do about it, so don't stress ;-) If they tell you it's going to cost you to have it fixed, ask them for a quote. Then you can maybe decide whether it's worth having it JTAG repaired (if possible) by a 3rd party which may well end up being cheaper.
But I digress, you haven't reached that point yet. So yeah, see how you go.

thanks for the info. keeping my fingers crossed. Just called samsung and have booked it in under warranty repair. Guess i can only wait now back to my Nokia 6300 for now then
Do you guys think that it could possibly be anything to do with the siyah kernel or JKay deluxe framework that could've done anything to the phone?
Hi Everyone,
After doing a deep search i did not find the exact problem I have.
Specs:
Phone: SGS2 i9100
ROM: CM10 Nightly 08.09.2012
Kernal: CM Stock
You can see the symptoms of my problem in the video I found below (it wont allow me to paste link with less than 10 posts so i shortened the URL)
youtube.com/watch?v=BCyp1iCTW2M
This is what happened:
1. I had an Adapter from Car Outlet to USB so i connected my phone using it but it seemed they did not like each other.
The phone was stuck on a black screen so I restarted it and noticed I lost 40% battery in those few minutes, looking at BBS i saw the RIL wakelock so decided its just a coincidence and i'll let the battery drain all the way to calibrate it at night (the phone worked perfectly fine)
2. After the battery was fully drained I connected it to the PC to charge and turned it on and everything was fine, noticed it was at 0% so after a few minutes it turned off, after doing it a couple of times i let the phone charge "turned off" (thought maybe its low voltage of PC charge) through the whole night
3. at morning it did not charge at all, I managed to "almost" turn the device on but now the battery is really drained so i cant even do that
4. when i tried going into download mode (just to see if my phone is OK) i managed, when i am trying now i get "Battey is to low, cannot download"
5. I cant get into recovery mode, but i tried it after all the process above so its probably because of low battery
6. I tried it on 2 diffrent batteries (unfortunately my old one was also drained before)
- Anker 1900
- Original Samsung 1650
I am going to get an AC charged and try using it.
Any Ideas what should i do or what the problem is ?
Thanks in advance!

This is the way to go. First make absolutely sure the battery is charged, if possible by testing it in another device. With a fully charged battery it should be possible to find out if your phones hardware is still fine, especially the charging board.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply!
So far i got an AC charger for the phone (not a battery only cradle charger kind of thing) but getting the same problem.. it just wont charge the battery through the phone..
I'll try to get a fully charged battery to give feedback that the phone is fine and not bricked in any way as i mentioned before.
If everything is fine i'll see that the battery is chargeable when not completely dry and we'll be smarter after that.
in case it really became unchargeable and it is a problem in the charging board as you mentioned
Could you please expand on the functionality of the charging board ? and whats the process for fixing/replacing it ?
Thanks in advance!

Excellent! If it is not bricked then chances are good that it is 'only' a battery/charging problem.

If, in the end, the phone does not charge by the USB connector (no matter if from PC or wall plug) then it could be worth to replace the flex print with the USB connector and parts of the charging electronics. This flex print is quite cheap and you can get it from ebay. With the help of some video from youtube you should be able to replace it yourself
Well,
I have an update on the issue.. unfortunately can't say its a good one..
I've tried turning on the device with a diffrent battery (charged) and it workes perfectely fine.
since I live far i didnt want to wait a month till i get the USB flex from ebay i went to a repair lab and let the test the phone.
Unfortunately it is not the USB Flex but a deeper problem,
apparently the u500,u501,u504 parts got fried on the MB and they don't have them at all.
I am going to try to restore my phone (using a full battery) to the way i bought it and try go to the store and work the warranty (it voids as soon as i changed ROM), going to have to read a lot on how to do it perfectly and erasing traces of changes (go an old nand and need to unroot afterwards)
do u know a good guide for restoring the phone to full stock ?
Also,
is it possible to buy a complete MotherBoard for the GS2 or its not worth it ?
Thanks for the help!

There are quite a few guides around here that deal with unrooting and getting the device ready for official service. Personally I just make sure the flash counter is reset (TriangleAway or JIG) and then flash a stock firmware.

I had the device opened several times. Replacing the MBO should not be too difficult. There are only some screws and connectors.

If the warranty wont work than I saw its around 150$ but if that will solve it it might be worth it instead of buying a new phone.
Thanks Again!
They are a lot more than that unless you are in USA/Canada.Theres a firm on eBay that give you $30-$50 for your old board, and they sell theirs for around $180.
Samsung would be around $250...

So.. After a long time (!!) I have an update.
No lab fixed my phone as everyone said its "unfixable" or need to replace some parts that they don't have... so I did what I planned to do.
I took a full battery from a friend
Restored the phone to full stock (the same official "partner" ROM I got the phone when bought it (even putted Android 2.3 on it LOL)
formatted my SD card , and of course did a "Triangle Away" to reset the flash counter
basically returned the phone to the way i bought it..
Since I still had around 2 month on the warranty I went to the store i bought the phone from and they accepted the phone based on warranty, as i didn't install any ROM's (LOL )
Only TODAY after more than a month and a half of wait, while it was at their official lab, after that was sent abroad to the Vendor itself, after nobody was able to fix it I got a new phone (14 days used phone) so, considering i was ready to throw my phone and by a new one it turned out OK.
since no one was able to fix it, it was probably a major problem.
Of course its better i got a new one, since even if they fixed the issue, who know what else it might effected so its a very good result.
Don't know if this helps anyone a lot, but at least its some closure to the thread.
Thanks for everyone who helped here!
Hi,
today my I9100 froze while in the browser. It didn't respond to any touch or button activity. So I removed the battery and reinserted it, but the phone didn't boot up. There was nothing, a black screen, no matter which buttons I pressed.
I tried the Download Mode, Pushing the Volume-Up/Down while plugging in the USB cable. The battery is fine, I tested it on another phone.
The phone was rooted with cm-10.1-20130606-NIGHTLY-i9100. It does not matter if a SIM is placed or not, still no response from the phone.
One odd thing tough: The phone gets warm in the right corner, near the flashlight when the battery is inserted for a while.
Can I do something or is it dead?
Replace motherboard; service centre - new motherboard (most expensive option), source 2nd hand motherboard from 'donor' phone (with a broken screen, etc; search online) & either replace it yourself or pay a local mobile repair shop to do it (cheaper option).
And if your warranty is good, you could always take it to a service centre & play dumb (obviously they're under no obligation to repair or replace it under warranty tho given you've voided it).
Herbert Heaheye
Wouldn't it be have to repaired in order to determine if a custom ROM was used? The phone is not showing any reaction at all, so I guess the only way finding out is reading the flash chip itself, is that possible or is this the normal case?
Anyway I purchased a USB JIG, just to be sure before I give it into repairs.
They might be able to tell. You might get warranty service. These things are never guaranteed either way. Take it to a service centre & find out.
Edit - Jig has 0.00000001% chance of working, but try it anyways. Heat around camera & no life = dead components on MB.
Similar or probably the same issue

My phone is a I9100, rooted, running CM 10.1 Nightly (I don't remember which exact version but definitely not the latest nightly). My phone was in my backpack along with my laptop. When I tried to use it, it remained unresponsive so I turned it off by holding the power button and then turned it on again. It showed the "Samsung Galaxy SII" boot logo and was stuck.
So I pulled the battery out, waited for about 15 secs, put the battery back in and turned it on - no reaction. The phone won't turn on, my computer doesn't detect, not charging. The service center says that my Mobo needs to be replaced.
I have ordered an USB Jig but I'm not sure if it will work. Did you try the Jig? Did it work?
My phone does get heated up near the rear camera even before it died. So not sure if it really is a fried mobo and bootloader failure.
If a service centre has told you its a dead MB, a jig ain't working. Save your time & have it repaired now.

Got the motherboard replaced and phone back to usage. Thanks!
I was driving and my phone was in my pocket. There is no way it was hit or got wet, I was driving whole time. Next time I took my phone, it was off. I tried to press power button and also hold it, nothing happened. I though my phone was stuck (never did it before) so I pulled out my battery, waited 10 minutes, put it back in and tried again. Nothing. I also had charger in my car and tried with that, nothing happened. No LED light, no screenlight, no vibration, nothing.
Now few hours after I am home and started to check whats wrong with my phone. I tried with original charger, nothing. My girlfriend also has S3 so I tried with her battery, nothing. She put my battery into her phone and noticed that it didn't go on. Funny thing is that I took my phone off charge this morning and phone was on for maybe 4 hours before this "death" happened. I took my multimeter and checked voltage. It was 0. Not 0.4 or 2.1 but 0.000. I checked my girlfriends battery also if my meter was broken but I got normal value from her battery. I plugged my charger into my phone and left it for 15 minutes. I tried to check voltage again and it was still 0.
Question is, did my MB broke and created short circuit resulting emptying my battery completely or did my battery flip and broke my phone at the same time? Also, are both cases under normal warranty and will Samsung still repair/replace my phone even if I had it rooted and installed MIUI? Reason I ask this is that my phone won't be sent to samsung for nothing and that they won't ask me to pay for shipping and investigating problem (I don't even want to know their hour wages for this).

Broken motherboard suggests physical damage = no warranty.
Rooted and custom rom = no warranty
Will Samsung see its been rooted ??

But funny thing is that my phone didn't take any physical damage, it has never falled from big height (maybe something like 10-20cm and always to soft surface like carpet). It was working when I put it into my pocket and was broken when I took it. I was in the car whole time, not moving from drivers seat.
I'm not sure if Samsung will see if it is rooted since phone doesn't boot at all (tried with working battery). No vibration, no LED light, no screenlight. It's like trying without battery.
Do you think I should try and send it to Samsung or just throw it to trashcan?
If the motherboard is DOA then they won't try to fix it, just replace it and your battery (if the battery is under six months old). Well worth sending for warranty, at worse you'll pay the postage and refuse the repair if they try to charge you.
send it in, only option
Agree suck it and see .

My phone and battery are over 1 year old so no warranty for my battery. I just though maybe problem is at on/off switch but then again it doesn't explain my empty battery. I am now charging my battery on my girlfriends S3 and seems like it is charging so I guess problem is on my phone only. I will take my phone to local shop and they will send it tomorrow to Samsung. Thank you all for fast answer, lets hope best that they will switch whole motherboard and wont notice rooted phone.

Hello,
I am experiencing the same issue as well with my phone. I have left it on charge overnight and the phone stopped working. I have tried all the steps above but without any luck. If I take the phone for repair as you advise, are there any charges involved? And if they are, how much is the average cost for me to be ready for it and avoid getting a heart attack.
Thank you in advance for any replies.
If covered by warranty then there should be no charge, SDS is due to Samsung problem.
But if warranty is not available then allow £200 for a new motherboard.

Well with the situation that I have with the phone at the moment, is it even possible to detect the root?
If the motherboard is completely dead then no, they won't find root (root alone doesn't invalidate warranty in the EU). The only problem might be if JTAG restores bootloader and flashed counter.
