[Q] Hi Im new to everything and in trouble. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my first Samsung Galaxy S III 4G today and found this site online.
I always had Apple phones, so I was very keen to modify this new phone with a custom ROM after reading about them online and how good Android is better than Apple.
After much reading through the forums (tbo its all a little confusing) I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959605 which as i understand it, in order to have a custom ROM you first must ROOT your phone.
So I followed the instructions to the letter and after everything was finished my phone booted up and now it says "No Service"
I searched some more and found a thread that says type *#06# into the phone to find the IMEI and mine says null/null.
Can't make or receive any calls/texts now and am scared my brand new phone is worthless ...
I am with Telstra Mobile Australia, and I've tried to search for a replacement image? like something to make my phone go back to how it was before, but I can't find anything.
Really sad now, and I'm dead meat when this gets found out if I've broken my new phone. If I take the phone back to the store, will I be in trouble? Like they will say too bad, now you have to pay a two year contract for a broken phone?
If someone can help me please I would be so grateful.
Thx.

Found info about odin, then in odin you back top stock. There are some package that containg everything you want to fix ur phone. Al so funda how ti put ur phone in downloadmode. It's very easy everything

Maybe your efs folder got corrupted.
It's annoying but it's solvable.
Check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918601&highlight=no+imei
Is it the same issue as you have?
Actually, I think if only the IMEI has changed I don't think it's the efs folder.
I think some more experienced users can help you.
Good luck

Solved!
This place rocks!
Found the answer to my problem searching the forum. Only took me a few days to find it
Thx to those who attempted to help me, muhcly appreciated

Can u explain what u did to fix it? Or leave link to the solution.. Thanks

Sure no problem.
The thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946915
But if you have the same issue (to save you reading the whole thing) you need this: http://d-h.st/Fhb Param_Bin_I9305.zip - 612.14 KB
which you load with Odin3.
# Make sure you have Samsung Kies or the Samsung USB Driver installed on your PC.
# Download and Extract: Odin3 3.04.zip - 457.11 KB to your PC if you don't already have it.
# Download and Extract: Param_Bin_I9305.zip - 612.14 KB to your PC.
# With your Phone Switched Off, press and hold: 'VOL DN' + 'HOME' + 'POWER' to enter Download Mode.
# Connect your phone to your PC via USB Cable and start Odin.
# Check your phone is connected by seeing if a COM Port in a Blue box is present under ID:COM.
# Press the 'PDA' Button and select the 'Param_Bin_I9305.tar.md5' file you extracted from the Zip Archive earlier.
# Press the 'PDA' Button and wait for it to finish flashing. If successful, you will see a Green Box with 'PASS!'.
# Wait for your phone to reboot then go to your Dialer and press: *#06#. You should now see your IMEI and your Data Connection will be back.
Don't forget to buy the guy a beer

Firstly, NEVER, ever, ever, ever use titles like "please help" and nothing else. Its extremely annoying for many people so you have less chance of getting a accurate answer. Use proper titles that describe the topic, titles are supposed to be descriptive, not simply somebody saying "help", that doesn't describe your topic to people browsing sections in any way other then its a n00b panicking about something.
Second, which model/variant do you have?
Which rom did you try and install?
Which guide did you use?
What EXACTLY did you do?
You need to provide more info if you expect answers/help.
At this moment people can only tell you to enter download mode and flash back to stock via odin.
If you don't know what download mode or odin is then you simply should not have been flashing your device as you obviously haven't read anything properly.
ok I am sorry and you are right... well i downloaded an ics from a site (can't remember) and i tryed to install ... first 2-3 times i got some fails in odin... then i closed and restarted it and it worked... at last for some mins... it blocked at ''setup conection'' step. after a while i closed the phone and odin and when i tryed to open the phone appeared a phone,a computer and a dot line with an ''!'' mark on it. now if i try to put it into download mode ( vol.down + home+power ) gives me same thing with that image and also with vol.up+home+power so this means i cant do anything with my phone...can't open, can't put it into download mode, and also cant restore to factory settings

This is what you get when you read and use instructions from some random crappy/sites or blogs or you dont read instructions properly, flash wrong files to your phone etc etc.
Remove battery for 10-15 mins and then replace, see if you can get into download or recovery.
If not buy or make a USB Jig and use that to see if you can get into download.
If not you will need to do/get a JTAG repair or send to Samsung and play dumb about what you have done, Just say you was using Kies and it failed or somthing, Hopefully they will repair.

shame really s2 a really good phone lol
You still haven't said which model you have. It's on the label under the battery.
And the pc - ! - phone screen is a forced download mode. You should be able to flash from there as long as your computer detects the phone from Odin.

Work on reading instructions (and in general, really... You PMed me despite my signature requesting no tech support PMs) more thoroughly. You were asked multiple times what model phone you have, and never answered. If you had provided that information, someone could have directed you to that guide faster.
And if you successfully used that guide (which implies you have an i9100g, and NOT an i9100), then stick to i9100g firmwares and kernels. If you DO indeed have an i9100g, and flash i9100 firmwares or kernels, you'll end up back in the same boat.

follow this bit to the word
How to install using: (desktop) ODIN
Short: unpack the ZIP download, you will end up with a TAR, flash this in ODIN as PDA, and optionally install and run Triangle Away afterwards to reset the flash counter. Beware that this should boot your device into recovery mode (for a few seconds to install SuperSU and CWM Manager) after flashing. Sometimes it doesn't, just flash it again in that case.
Long:
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached Odin3-vX.X.zip file
- Download and unzip the CF-Root-SGS3-vX.X.zip file (see posts below this one)
- If you end up with a recovery.img and cache.img file, you've extracted twice. You need to end up with a .tar file - don't extract that one
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start Odin3-vX.X.exe
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-SGS3-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode (turn off phone, then hold volume-down + home + power to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run adb reboot download command)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure Repartition is NOT checked
- Click the Start button
- Wait for Android to boot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)

Richdog is absolutely right.
Search wouldn't be filled with that **** if people searched instead of posting this ****.
No offence OP, using this guys words to help us build up a rapport.
Search is free and very useful, and it'll prevent you getting flamed next time you ask a question if you have searched and couldn't find a suitable answer and your thread starts with "I tried searching but..."
Glad you found what you needed and rooted your device. Oh, and welcome to hell....I mean xda...

I actually used the search and found the right stuff (I think), but now that I have a problem with rooting, I have to get 10 posts to post in thread first.
So I might as well abuse this little thread for it:
In stead of the above mentioned thread I used this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
Is that a proper way of rooting or should I use the other thread? Either way, the tool from the thread I just linked doesn't see my phone. I've tried on both win7 and xp machines and it just doesn't see it. The phone is recognized fine by windows, just not by the tool. So, what to do?

whatever is this method, go for the first (chainfire) this developer is well known for his Cfroot, it's already running on my Samsung galaxy tab and millions of other phones around the world, just follow the instructions (the long one and it's ok if you take more than 30 second just to make sure you didn't forget anything)
good luck

I will never apologise or back down from politely asking people if they have done a basic search before asking basic question, which has obviously been asked on here a hundred, maybe even a thousand times. It is other peoples time that is being used to get an answer, and I personally only think thats acceptable if you have really had a look yourself first and genuinely can't find the answer.
The video from XDA sums it up more amusingly and eloquently than I can.

So I've tried doing it many times and even re flashing cyanogen mod 9 on my phone but I still can seem to get rom manager to work. Everytime it prompts me to install clockwork recovery and then at the top, the bar will reach full and then instantly freeze.
I'm running a nightly build anybody able to give me some suggestions?

i777 NO ODIN/ NO BOOT/ NOT RECOGNIZED/ NO DOWNLOAD-MODE/ NO RECOVERY-MODE/ NO CWM

One more from noobville!
I was using ShishirRom (ICS) since a week. Today I was trying to flash CM9-Stable-Version in the morning. And 2 major problems occurred.
1. While I was transferring the CM-9-Stable-Version file to my phone, I was checking out the ROM Manager (I know you hate me already!!) and I pressed the Backup Current ROM Button instead of the back button on my phone. (**** Im stupid ) But wait there is more!
2. While I was finally able to get into Download Mode after 30 minutes of fiddling and was trying to flash via Odin to return to Stock and start all over again, my dear a$$hole friend pulled the plug while the Odin was in progress. (Yes, I am having one of those worst days)
Current situation: Phone does not boot-up - means NO ODIN RECOGNITION / NOT RECOGNIZED BY LAPTOP / NO DOWNLOAD-MODE / NO RECOVERY-MODE / NO CWM.
I have been googling about ADB and how to use it, but honestly I have not found on a How-to. I have read that ADB can reboot the phone into Download Mode or Recovery Mode, but I don't know how to use it. I don't know how to use ADB does not mean I didn't google it. I just couldn't find a guide to use it in my situation. If you can, please send me a link

Ok so this might look dumb of me, but I am desperate here. I know its a weekend, and everybody is drunk. And probably I am the only lonely trying to figure out what the hell is ADB!
I look up to this site and the developers here. And I shouldn't, but I have, started expecting from all of you knowledgeable individuals. I would be hurt to be let down. Please help!
Thank you everyone in advance.

I just got the USB-JIG. I followed the instructions you mentioned, but it does not work. The USB-JIG does not help either.
Im actually in the process of moving interstate. Once its done, I will contact the local AT&T shop to find out more on warranty replacement, since I am still under warranty.
Thank you anyway; even if it didn't start my phone, I still learnt a lesson: NEVER DO ANDROID STUFF IN OFFICE TIME, OR YOUR STUPID FRIEND WILL UNPLUG YOUR PHONE THINKING ITS JUST CHARGING.

[Q] Unroot - Recovery Mode- Download mode

Ok
Trying to Unroot.
But today I have this giantic issue.
My recovery mode just doesnt appear anything like before.
I have tried unrooting using a Root_Remover.zip file. But I can't find at all the "install zip" menu in recovery mode I had when I had to root it first ! Now it just wont appear at all. I only have :
Reboot system Now
Apply update from external Storage
Wipe Data/Factory REset
Wipe Cache Partition
and nothing more. I even tried the second menu (apply update from ext.stor.) but im not using any external storage.
I thought "all right, Ill get through it with ODIN >>> WRONG !!!!!! No download mode ...
So right now I'm completely screwed since theres no way I can perform an unroot under such conditions.
Please someone help me out with this, sorry for being a bit too straightfoward but after 72h spent on that @#%? I find it pretty unrelevant that this ****ing menu wont show the hell up. Even though I guess Im just doing something wrong, I need help.
EDIT : All right. So I figured out most tutorials are written by incompetent people whom mostly release pseudo tutorials that are just here to show the world that they can perform this or that, but in fact, can't take a single second to make a point where you don't get access to DOWNLOAD MODE the same way on a Tab2 than with a S2 -_-. We don't enter DOWNLOAD mode the same way ... geez ... so I figured out that using the Up volume button instead of the down volume button would eventually get me there. Which it did. Come on ... how is it possible that after 15 tutorials, not ONE did mention that ?
Also, ODIN doesn't want to do @#%? right now. I browsed the right firmware, plugged my tab to my laptop ... hit START and it ends in 5 seconds after "all thread completed (0 succeed/0 failed)
I've tried multiple stock firmwares (all the same but form different locations or mirrors) and ... nothing. So ...
First, please clarify these couple of questions. What device do you have? What version of recovery do you have? And one more out of curiosity. Where did you get that root remover zip?

Most of the tutorials are written for the GT-P75xx. Being that it's also the device for the section you posted this rant in, I can see why the tutorials were not what you needed. Just my two cents but condemning the authors of the tutorials will most likely get you very little help. Not to mention this section isn't for your device.

Don't know what happened to my last reply but anyway :
All the threads I read were for Tab2 p51xx or SII.
As explained in first reply (which disappeared), I had and have my damn good reason to condemn people who spam the net with their useless blogs. Won't waste time explaining again a reason which won't certainly arent interested in. But it was costy in term of $.
That said I then realized XDA still exists so I launched a quick google search and fell on this subboard. Reading "Samsung Tab 10.1", unfortunatly didn't mean to me it is a seperated sub forum from the Samsung tab2 10.1. My bad ... do I have to get this thread transfered to the right place or admins will find it useless ?
_____________
My ROM is none. I unrooted but didn't install any ROM. After that I simply figured out I don't need one. But today I need to upgrade to anything above 4.0.4 after the very bad experience I had late friday eve which is quite costy.
I have one more minor trouble I didn't speak of in my first post :
I bought my tablet in September 2012 in the Netherlands GT P5110, ICS 4.0.4. So after checking on the XDA page where all of the stock firmwares are listed, I realized there is no "perfect" match. The only firmware for the Netherlands and for P5110 is from April 2012 and ICS 4.0.3, not 4.0.4 ; yet it is the one I downloaded. Should I get another one ?
About the Root remover, I uploaded to my tab one I downloaded from a website which I can't recall or find on google right now because I downloaded two from two different websites and only remember this one : www techbloggerzone com/2012/09/how-to-unroot-galaxy-tab-2-101-gt html [dots for WWW | COM and HTML were removed since I'm not allowed to post external links yet]
I think there's nothing else missing, but tell me if there is.
IMPORTANT EDIT : I just realized the factory usb plug I have for the Samsung must be damaged. It charges on sector, but isn't identified properly on my laptop and thus won't let me connect it by wire. Didn't figure this out earlier as I did all transfers by Kies wifi. Damn ... but it only explains why Odin can't upload anything to my tab, not why I can't use find the zip install option in Recovery mode for the root_remover.zip
As already stated you're in the wrong place but we all try to help each other here...but no more rants or you might find a stoney silence will be your only reply....
Problem with Odin is more likely laptop drivers and/or windows version and not your cable...
Samfirmware has many 4.0.4 roms for your "area", they have a 4.1.2 version for Netherlands and 4.0.4 for Belgium, Luxembourg etc. As long as you find an XX version it will have Dutch language option.
The recovery you described when you eventually got into it sounded like stock recovery so you wouldn't be able to choose and flash zip from there
Calm down, take a deep breath, get your laptop and drivers sorted first or you'll not get anywhere... Did you have a yellow indication with com port number in the Odin window, if not it is surely drivers. Does windows in any way recognise the tab when connected? (warning tone, does device manager show anything?)

I thought I had all my drivers updated (for the samsung tab, installed like two or three weeks ago), so if it's about drivers, then I don't get it . I checked that in the first place. The cable sometimes fails the connection to my laptop, but today it just won't work. :/. Windows recognizes the device as an external object which can't properly install and such connect (yellow pop up message in right corner, over the task bar). I do not exactly undersatnd what you mean by a yellow indication with "com port" number in the Odin window, but I don't think I had that ... in fact I'm pretty sure about it.
If it's just about drivers, where can I go to find the latest ?
Try looking in Samsung site for drivers here http://www.samsung.com/us/support/
What version of odin are you using? Would recommend 1.3 for the tab 2.
The indication of com port in odin is as in attached image, if you haven't got that then the computer is not recognising your tab, either because of drivers, or cable, but as we've said, you should start with the drivers, probably by downloading the latest from Samsung, deleting all drivers you have at the moment then re-installing.
If the tab is not recognized by the computer then programs like odin cannot do anything as they use the computers' usb bus...

Thank you very much !! I was using Odin 1.85 and Odin 3.7 (used 1.85 for rooting), I'll try a downgraded version.
Keep you in touch if problems are resolved or not after that. Thank you again.

Ok...first i need to know certain things...
1. Does you device boot into download mode??....if it does then it is not brick its only soft brick and can be revived....:fingers-crossed:
A device that is truly Bricked will not even turn on....it will simply not show anything on the screen...no matter what !!
So if your device boots into download mode then don't worry and don't lose hope...:good:
2. Tell me if it boots into recovery....??
if not ... then try to flash a recovery using odin....
if it does ... then first of all Wipe Data/Cache and Dalvik Cache
copy a rom on your sd card and flash it through the recovery... and then Wipe Data/Cache and Dalvik Cache again...
Let me know if anything helped ... and let me know other updates.... Hope things work for you...
Thanks

1) I call bull**** on that (for the SGS2 at least).
2) If those people are fixing it for you, why are you posting in this thread ?
Bottom line is, if the phone won't boot, you ain't fixing it.
The end.

i already said in my post if the people's who dont know about my problem should not reply in my thread,
Unfortunately you don't get that option on XDA, you put a thread up, anyone can reply (unless it's a development thread, which this isn't).
My earlier diagnoses of motherboard replacement or JTAG stand.
