Any thoughts about the new Android 4.2 release from Google?
Supposedly rumours are saying that it is faster/quicker than 4.1, and of course it has the different new functions like the notification bar changes and multiple users. For me the most interesting part is if it is (or feels) faster than 4.1. No mistaken though, 4.1 feels fast on my TFP, but faster is always welcome!
Hopefully Asus will throw themselves over this one and get to work quickly, considering that this time the changes are not so huge, hopefully it won't take as much time as with 4.1.. even though 4.1 from Asus was probably some of the fastest updates in the Android-industry, which I am eternally thankful for, since JB seems to have fixed all my problems with the device (still have the browser lock-ups, but only seen it 2 times since the update.. which is nothing compared to 30 times a day before).
I was just thinking, that since there still was no thread about 4.2 here in the TFP forum, I figured that it would be a nice welcome to our discussions, and I am certain that Asus will give it to us as soon as they are able to get hands on with the code from Google! Considering the device is not even a year old.

your right it will take them ages to update seeing as we have only just got 4.1.
hopefully the drivers and code will be very similar to 4.1 so we might see a CM build soon.. didnt take long for CM build of JB after release as a lot of the code was similar to ICS. it was the jump from GB to ICS that was the bad one!
time iwll tell

OP isnt asking asus for the update. He's starting a thread to discuss the update.
For me multiple users is the big one. My kids love using the tablet, and now ill just lock my profile and hide everything i dont want them in on theres

I got my Prime back in May, and there was already an ICS update for it. We just got our Jelly Bean update not too long ago. We might even see the 4.2 update by 2013. I am excited for the multi-user capability. That would give us something the iPad users don't have.

Yes, you are correct I am just hoping for a nice discussion about the new things that was announced in the update from Google I am by no means trying to bug Asus about the update, as I believe it will come when they are ready for it, be it a month or 4 months.
I am mostly looking forward to even more speed and snappiness (even though JB did miracles for me), and I am also looking forward to the changes to Google Now + the ones done to the notification bar. For me the pad is only used by me, so multiple users is not of any interest to me.. as I look at the tablet as I do my phone.. but I still find it a useful addition, as I believe many others.. for example families that share a pad, will find it very useful!
I'm not asking either I'm just hoping for an update and expressing that hope in this thread. Let's hope we get it! I like my tablet as it is but software support in this fast moving android world is important, if Asus continues to update their tablet to the latest and greatest android for as long as the hardware can decently run it, I'm probably buying Asus again just for this. I don't mind their little **** up with the wifi and the memory (for me it's all sufficiently working).
Give that Google is callign it an update to JB, I am hopeful that those devices already running JB can get it pushed out to them fairly quickly.
In the long run google would like to see less fragmentation and a more cohesive Android echosphere. So if we do a holding pattern around JB, with upgrades and added features, for another year or two, I can imagine that those on 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 and of course 4.0 will upgrade to new devices running 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3... all JB.
I think 4.2 is terrible. I don't want a blown up phone UI on a tablet! Tablets should have specifically tuned ui's like they do now.

Thanks for the suggestion. While it's better than nothing, it's quite clunky to use via a PS3 (I don't have a Smart TV). It also doesn't include some apps which I like to use a lot.
well, i want the miracast from 4.2 but i want to keep the ui i have in 4.1. My prime runs pretty good now too.
Hello...
Not sure how but, if I root my Prime and do not put a rom on it,
will I still be able to get OTA updates? I currently have Android

You can't if you already are on Jelly Bean (> 4.1) and hadn't rooted your device on ICS. At least if you have a locked device. If you unlock you will lose the ability to update your device OTA.
Thank you ASUS, latest update working 100%

Agree. There's already a thousand threads about what's new with ICS (and OPs that didn't do their own research).
So here's my addition:

ICS will not cool you off on a hot day.
I'm waiting ICS beacause it will bring native support to VPN connections with Group Authentication, that now is impossible to use with Honeycomb..

Well, to be honest, I haven't found any major, or noticeable, bugs on stock. Could you tell me some you have run into?
And no major fc issues either. Some of the apps indeed force close, but that is an app issue and is usually rectified with an update from play. No hc blame there.
Of course every new android version is (supposedly) better than the previous. Gingerbread was way better from froyo, it had more features, but the lack of those features in froyo doesn't make it buggy. Hope you understand what I mean.

Just HC had a lot of bugs and fcs in its initial release, though the most current Touchwiz based on HC 3.2 is definately more stable. But of course, by now, I've blissfully moved on to aokp ICS custom rom, and naturally feel no urge to return to HC. I m sure when you upgrade to ICS after sammy releases the official version this month, you'll not want to return either.

Only cuz its a way better OS.. Best Google's work so far and it's really awesome.. Now if you want to stay with hc no1 is forcing you to do so..
It's just a dumb question IMHO.. If you have a 4 cylinders engine Chevy and out of nowhere Chevy calls you and tells to you that they want to replace your old engine for a brand new 8 cylinders engine FOR FREE, will you stay with the old 4 cylinders (that works ok but some times need oil) or will you be HAPPY and go get your new engine??
Again it's up to you to stay with your old engine or go get the new 1.. But consider yourself a dork If you don't change because you are okay with the old.

Exactly. JB is great and all, but how about providing me with a decent, usable tablet first. It's been almost 8 friggin' months now.
so, rather than agressively work on the next latest OS, you want them to continue to dilly dally with ICS versus just getting on with it? it takes them months between ICS releases and the issues are not improving. Why not take months and get on with JB and making it happen.

Well first of all, hello all Prime users. I am relatively new to forum and checking this section because I recently purchased Infinity. I believe it may perhaps be two different things. ICS & JB are OS but they can potentially fix the issue based on the Kernel if so they probably should as there is probably a good chance they are going to use the kernel on JB. So what I mean is JB may show up but if they continue to use the same Kernel and if it is indeed the issue.... So yeah if these firmware update are referring to OS tuning then won't worth it but if it is Kernel, which they use for both JB & ICS then they should fix it on ICS before potentially introducing new issue with JB.
Nothing they do to IML74K 4.0.3 will solve the 201's problems.. just my opinion
If they push JB they better have an updated kernel.

I agree but no way to know for sure until Gary stops blowing smoke up our asses and actually posts new firmware that is if any actually exist.
For me I'd rather be testing new JB software with a 3.1.x kernel like the one on the Nexus 7 than dicking around with 4.0.3.
The thing is - they say "months". Which is how many, exactly, 3 or 5 or 7 ? And wouldn't it be a little bit unpleasant, if after 3 months of waiting we'd get same crashing crap, like 28 is ?
And damn I hate this secrecy. Honestly, waiting wouldn't be so much of a trouble if I knew what the problem is and what're the chances they're fixed in JB.
No-one would wait if it were for a TV, don't see how it's different for a tablet.

Developer Options Limit background processes
I would love to have JB and I keep coming back to the forums to see if there's any good news but never what I want to hear. I too would like to beta test any firmware that came down the pipe.... The one thing I have done and found it on another thread in here, Limit background processes to 4 in Developer Options. It has made all the difference to me on how the tablet runs. Its always quick and runs more like I had hoped. There's always a bunch of nonsense on why the tablet is terribly slow, but this has made me happy until JB comes out. I expect Asus to mess it up and continue to messing it up but when its all said and done I'm still pretty happy!

Hey TFP owners, I graduated on to the Infinity boards but I'll never forget this board.
We're in the same boat on the wait list for ASUS to rollout Android 4.1.
But someone on the Infinity board who posted getting JB for the Infinity before anyone else was soon found that there's a side method to how that user got JB on her Infinity tablet, and it's through the available JB firmware rom for the TF300.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1870099&page=14
Poster MysticMgcn has found this out duplicated the OP's work of getting JB on the Infinity, though he reports that the JB is definity TF300 because the resolution is low (720p vs Infinity's 1080p).
That low resolution of the TF300 is the same resolution as the TF201 and it would probably suit you Prime owners better to ditch ICS and try out Jelly Bean as it's working on Infinitys, it should definitely work on the Prime which's hardware is near identical to the TF300.
So... kinda hard to understand, but I think he's saying someone got the TF300 version of JB to run on the Infinity and theoretically we should be able to the do the same thing on the Prime.
Has anyone been brave enough to try it?

Nope. But if there is so little difference between devices that the ROM for one would actually run on the other, then the official update can't be far off. I'll just wait and see.
I would try it, but with seemingly no way of rolling back, I wouldn't want to risk bricking it or stopping myself from being able to update to the official version when it drops.

The TF300 is a regular IPS screen. We have an IPS+ screen. the TF700 thread speaks of brightness control problem with the TF300 JB rom. I would not attempt loading it if I were you.
Exactly what I was going to post, I don't think this rom will be exactly the same.
I'm still hoping that once we will get a unified architecture where u can install any os on. I mean ... all these tablets running on tegra3's, all these phones running on snapdragons, but still they need to make a special rom for each and everyone of them. Why no unified structure for socs? It would make everything a lot easyer for developers AND for us.
I guess they want us to look eagerly to every new iteration of hardware and feel like we have older hardware constantly. I still think my 'aging' desktop system is plenty fast and runs all games and new software superb even if it's not the newest hardware, I think that's NOT what they want

Sounds like sideloading another rom, would still require tablet unlock. In that case, for prime owners, you're better off with something like Baked Black Bean or Androwook or something like that; these versions are pretty good, and the latest v3 preview of BBB is just about perfectly stable!
This method of installing the rom for another device sounds like it's just asking for problems.

My take on this is that Asus will still provide Android upgrade bumps for the Prime for maybe up to June next year if we're lucky because dropping support for the Prime this early into its life just brings a bad name to it. Roms won't be awesometacular or completely stable but I'm guessing that we'll be getting it. However with that said Asus probably wants to drop support for it as soon as it can, if I were a profit hungry company, the Prime is the biggest liability, **** loads of rma, dongle, tons of complaints etc

Got good points!
From what I understand, the Prime has a similar hardware to the Infinity (which is why the JB update came out for both of them at around the same time). The Infinity will most likely get 4.2 since it's still quite new so hopefully they will build the update for the Prime too.

Is there even a 4.1.2?
Thought 4.2.x might be the next thing but now there's retractions.
We have just had Jellybean and there's already talk of future android versions?

If you have an unlocked devices, you'll get it with CM10 quite soon... when Asus will release an update... that's another question... may take a while though...

Android 4.1.2 is Jelly Bean... just a newer release with bug fixes

Yes, 4.1.2 is the new Jelly Bean release... due to be released to AOSP soon...
I would not be suprised if we do not get 4.1.2. We never got 4.0.4. If it is not needed or if 4.2 is just around the corner, they would not be working on it as they would have to just restart the work for 4.2.
As I understand it, the only new feature is Landscape Mode for the Nexus 7 launcher. The rest is bugfixes, so if the Bugs are present on the TFP, we might get an update, otherwise the update would be useless.
If you have an unlocked bootloader and the Jelly Bean bootloader... I've compiled CM10 which has the Android 4.1.2 changes... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32607769&postcount=690

The engineers have to take 3 weeks holiday first....
I found a link to a site that shows the Asus Android update lineup and the TF201 is listed (See attached image or link below)
I just want to know the legitimacy of this claim for the 4.3 update, because if this is true it means that our developers (Flumpster, NRGZ, ETC) will be able to make stock based Roms with the newest capabilities without having to use the TF300 or TF700.

If this is true it would be nice...although I Have my doubts that ASUS will update the prime...They have left us in 4.1.1....when I contacted them directly to ask about 4.2 update they said they had no plans of updating it to it. I have the feeling we won't see anymore official updates from ASUS. I hope I am wrong.

I had contacted them as well and this post felt very misleading promising me that 4.3 was going to be released... but at least our devoted developers can port it over from the TF700 and the TF300.

Maybe they did not want to release 4.2 because it did not have significant changes. Hopefully they should push 4.3

Yeah, I like that straw. I will grasp it also .
though of course 4.2 did introduce some significant features
I wouldn't count on it, considering that there was a post quoting an ASUS rep denying 4.2 will come to the TF201.

It sounds great. I just have bought a TF201 but When I reboot iI see a notice " Your drive is unlook" which problem is my tablest?
Several other devices have skipped 4.2 on and gone straight to 4.3, so this might just be possible. I do think 4.3 will run better on a greater variety of devices, and will probably be more widely adopted.
A Q3 release of a 4.3 update would be awesome news.
Anandtech claims that 4.3 includes TRIM support, which supposedly improves internal storage performance over time, so it might just show some real improvement on the tf201.
Well, I wouldn't count on it. This device has felt pretty much dead in the year 2013. However it works almost decently with 4.1 and the root fixes.
I seriously doubt you will get 4.3 for the prime. It makes no sense as you never officially got 4.2.
However it's easy enough to port TF700 and TF300 ROMs back to the TF201 as flumpster and I have done
I'm about to sell this tab anyways for the new nexus 7. 10 inches just isnt portable enough

I sold mine 2 weeks ago. It had to go before the new Nexus got announced.
I actually don't care i have to say :-\ androwook is awesome but the internal memory isn't going to get any faster which is the only problem with this tablet..
I hope so for 4.3 on our TF201
I hope we get the 4.3 update on our TF201, cause there seem to be an added TRIM support in 4.3 that could help some of our performance issues.

It's called trim. And if you are rooted, you can already use it on your tablet (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix).
Thanks it was a typo for TRIP instead of TRIM
Just some question about that apps, on my TF201 should I Trim everything including system or Just /data and /cache ?

I'm going to give this a go. I'll report back. I'm on a Energy 4.1.1 because the 4.2 ROMS seemed to be draining my battery faster so I'm overclocked at 1.7 w/Kernel.
Would a application even make a difference? Just curious.. I cant really say I notice much lag unless I'm browsing and it hangs...
Im running it for the first time on my prime right now. (lagfix, not a 4.3 OTA - lol)
Used the motochopper root to not have to unlock or change anything bootloader related to gain root.
Was very easy to do, enable developer options, enable debugging, wait for windows to install ADB stack, run the batch, literally like 2 seconds and bam, rooted.
FStrim/lagfix must be doing something right now cos the moment I hit run, the whole tab started running like balls (my guess is lots of command to the cheap emmc since its never been done before)
Im going to let it go, It should help ever so slightly, I dont have real high hopes though since I know just how bad the emmc is.:good:

THIS
So does anyone have any idea if this TRIM wosit-thingy might actually help the creaky old prime?
It sounds like the right medicine but i'm not even slightly getting my hopes up.
i still love the cracked screen rollin', broke-ass camera slingin', i/o-phobic thing though...
It does. TRIM + a cold boot once a week makes a night-and-day difference on my model (C, early 2012)
