Jelly Bean SDK was released today. I haven't been this excited about an OS yet!
Anyone going to work on ROMs?
Butter seems like it is going to be awesome!
Im interested in the Voice search and Google Now.

SDK aka software development kit is to help developers create apps compatible with jelly bean, not going to help with rom development.

We had gingerbread ROMs based off the SDK on the Incredible..
What about the PDK, thought I saw something about that being released on the I/O?

It does indeed help with rom development. Just not as easy.
I think it might help get it quicker too because the European version probably will get jelly bean quicker...

I have no idea what the PDK is. That's something new I think.
But, yes, SDK can be used to develop ROMs, we just need to get a kernel developer to figure those out and make sure they are compatible. It likely won't happen until the OTA's hit in mid-July but the fact that the Galaxy Nexus is getting the OTA bodes well for us I think...

The Galaxy Nexus does not have to rely on Samsung to push out updates though, and it is supposed to get updates first.

PDK as explained is the development kit for Physical Hardware, in other words for the Manufacturers. If developers that makes ROMs can get their hands on this one, then it would make it ALOT easier for them to create the ROMs. And the other nice thing they said is that the PDK was to be available for the Hardware Manufacturers 3-4 months before release, which should decrease the amount of time it takes for the manufacturers to release the next OS version. The problem is to try to get this from Google if you are not a hardware manufacturer.
And then there is still the issue with the drivers which is what the manufacturers sits on.
I know it doesn't help us get updates on the GS3 just bec the GN gets one, but having the GN getting the OTA can help us with ROM development esp if we have the kernels to work with.

It would seem then that Samsung should have been working on Jelly Bean for quite some time. What are the chances they release JB on the GS3 in the next 2 months if they have had 3-4 months to work on it?
They had ICS since at the latest last October and here it is June before they are releasing ICS for GS2. Seems the lead time is ~8 months. So if they had PDK 4 months ago and it takes them 8 months, then we should see JB in October/November. Unless the PDK somehow makes it easier to develop the ROM...

There are certainly some great features in there, but I think the "haven't been this excited about an OS yet" statement might be a little much. I'd say the milestone releases, 4.0 and 2.0 were certainly much more exciting than this. If it was intended to be the most exciting update yet, it would've had a version number to reflect that. Just saying.
Having said that... I'm pretty excited too, but it'll likely take Sammy a little while to push an official update if you're like me and don't root right away.
I want to see Project Butter and the new notifications in action!

I doubt Samsung has had the Jellybean PDK for four months already. Jellybean probably hasn't been finalized for that long.

My understanding was that google tried the early release this time around by giving it to the manufacturers two weeks before I/O. It is for the future releases that it was going to be 3-4 months.

Depends. The VSync governor and CPU prespread is rather a quantum leap. Yes, it's not massively exceeding the introduction of the 2.2 Dalvik JIT but it's going to push Android along and, likely, past the Cupertino Competition.
Not to mention "Butter" was the coolest code name, yet. Chet (who's also doing the "For Butter or for Worse" session tomorrow, gave a good impromptu hallway intro to some of us, and it's exciting. VERY exciting.
I flashed the toro version of the Jelly Bean SDK port to my Nexus and holy hell its so smooth. Much smoother than my GSIII. I can't begin to think how smooth this device will be especially since the screen is much more sensitive and responsive than my Nexus. 4.1 is what 4.0 should have been. The Google Now feature provided INSTANT response with no lag. Its almost like talking to a person. Im really impressed with jelly bean and hope Samsung provides timely updates.

Considering Samsung subscribes to the "want to upgrade your OS, upgrade the phone" philosophy, I am not sure we'll see JB on the S3 any time soon. I'd presume we'll see an AOSP Rom soon-ish, though, given the number of S3 owners at Google I/O that just stared and lusted...

I have not received anything since the 28.5 firmware update a LONG time ago.
If JB is coming in the "coming months" as announced today.. who cares about some updates to ICS now. It's old news.
I care, because, I'd like to have a tablet I can use. Right now, it's pretty damned annoying.
Just like "months" is irritating. I'd get excited about early august.

Exactly. JB is great and all, but how about providing me with a decent, usable tablet first. It's been almost 8 friggin' months now.
so, rather than agressively work on the next latest OS, you want them to continue to dilly dally with ICS versus just getting on with it? it takes them months between ICS releases and the issues are not improving. Why not take months and get on with JB and making it happen.
not me. ICS, forget about it... lets get on to the next OS versus wasting time, resources, effort, on an ICS

Well first of all, hello all Prime users. I am relatively new to forum and checking this section because I recently purchased Infinity. I believe it may perhaps be two different things. ICS & JB are OS but they can potentially fix the issue based on the Kernel if so they probably should as there is probably a good chance they are going to use the kernel on JB. So what I mean is JB may show up but if they continue to use the same Kernel and if it is indeed the issue.... So yeah if these firmware update are referring to OS tuning then won't worth it but if it is Kernel, which they use for both JB & ICS then they should fix it on ICS before potentially introducing new issue with JB.
Nothing they do to IML74K 4.0.3 will solve the 201's problems.. just my opinion
If they push JB they better have an updated kernel.

I agree but no way to know for sure until Gary stops blowing smoke up our asses and actually posts new firmware that is if any actually exist.
For me I'd rather be testing new JB software with a 3.1.x kernel like the one on the Nexus 7 than dicking around with 4.0.3.
The thing is - they say "months". Which is how many, exactly, 3 or 5 or 7 ? And wouldn't it be a little bit unpleasant, if after 3 months of waiting we'd get same crashing crap, like 28 is ?
And damn I hate this secrecy. Honestly, waiting wouldn't be so much of a trouble if I knew what the problem is and what're the chances they're fixed in JB.
No-one would wait if it were for a TV, don't see how it's different for a tablet.

Developer Options Limit background processes
I would love to have JB and I keep coming back to the forums to see if there's any good news but never what I want to hear. I too would like to beta test any firmware that came down the pipe.... The one thing I have done and found it on another thread in here, Limit background processes to 4 in Developer Options. It has made all the difference to me on how the tablet runs. Its always quick and runs more like I had hoped. There's always a bunch of nonsense on why the tablet is terribly slow, but this has made me happy until JB comes out. I expect Asus to mess it up and continue to messing it up but when its all said and done I'm still pretty happy!

It seems Gary is too busy dealing with the damage control over on the tf700 forum unfortunately. I think the Prime's are going to take a seat even further back(although I didn't know that was possible)

Nice. Any word as to whether or not the ANR issues have been fixed (or can be fixed) in this update?
Also, Does it fix the lack of being able to transfer data from the Prime to a PC through the charger port without having to transfer it to the MicroSD card first?

Ya, I know some people supposedly don't have issues with ANRs but from my understanding it is a problem that most users do have, including myself.
Don't get me wrong, I love my prime but there's nothing worse than showing it off to an Apple fanboy and right after they open the browser they get an ANR popup. This is something that simply just does not happen on the iPad, and it is quite an annoying thing to deal with.

Changelog: Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
DO you think us unlocked users that have custom roms and TWRP recovery will be able to install the official update? I've never thought about doing that, but I'd like to try out Official Jelly Bean!
I have the custom Android Mobi bootloader (video here). So if you can install an official rom with custom recovery, it will probably overwrite the custom bootloader.
Finally! Since I got my Galaxy Nexus a couple weeks ago (with Jelly Bean ROM) I have been noticing how slow my Prime is feeling. I would think a quad core beast like this should be faster than a dual core phone. But for some reason webpages load faster and I can scroll so much smoother on my GNex. I wouldn't think that JB is the only reason for this since my wife's GNex that was stock on ICS was running web pages smoother than the Prime. I don't understand... Just hope that this update breathes some life back into the old 201.
Thanks for all the info. I'm ready for the update. I haven't looked through the other threads and I was curious what ANR's are? I haven't had really any issues with my Prime. What different issues do people have so I can watch out for them.
Thanks
Chuck

craigacgomez said:
Err... I believe this update is purely an Android version upgrade... the downside is it removes WiFi direct & no longer has flash support... I guess I should have been more explicit, but don't expect a changelog other than one portraying JB feature... it's not an incremental update and is not meant to fix issues with ICS ROMs... it's a new base version... if it does fix issues, it will be because of new drivers, kernels, OS, etc...

Any thoughts about the new Android 4.2 release from Google?
Supposedly rumours are saying that it is faster/quicker than 4.1, and of course it has the different new functions like the notification bar changes and multiple users. For me the most interesting part is if it is (or feels) faster than 4.1. No mistaken though, 4.1 feels fast on my TFP, but faster is always welcome!
Hopefully Asus will throw themselves over this one and get to work quickly, considering that this time the changes are not so huge, hopefully it won't take as much time as with 4.1.. even though 4.1 from Asus was probably some of the fastest updates in the Android-industry, which I am eternally thankful for, since JB seems to have fixed all my problems with the device (still have the browser lock-ups, but only seen it 2 times since the update.. which is nothing compared to 30 times a day before).
I was just thinking, that since there still was no thread about 4.2 here in the TFP forum, I figured that it would be a nice welcome to our discussions, and I am certain that Asus will give it to us as soon as they are able to get hands on with the code from Google! Considering the device is not even a year old.

your right it will take them ages to update seeing as we have only just got 4.1.
hopefully the drivers and code will be very similar to 4.1 so we might see a CM build soon.. didnt take long for CM build of JB after release as a lot of the code was similar to ICS. it was the jump from GB to ICS that was the bad one!

Yes, you are correct I am just hoping for a nice discussion about the new things that was announced in the update from Google I am by no means trying to bug Asus about the update, as I believe it will come when they are ready for it, be it a month or 4 months.
I am mostly looking forward to even more speed and snappiness (even though JB did miracles for me), and I am also looking forward to the changes to Google Now + the ones done to the notification bar. For me the pad is only used by me, so multiple users is not of any interest to me.. as I look at the tablet as I do my phone.. but I still find it a useful addition, as I believe many others.. for example families that share a pad, will find it very useful!
I'm not asking either I'm just hoping for an update and expressing that hope in this thread. Let's hope we get it! I like my tablet as it is but software support in this fast moving android world is important, if Asus continues to update their tablet to the latest and greatest android for as long as the hardware can decently run it, I'm probably buying Asus again just for this. I don't mind their little **** up with the wifi and the memory (for me it's all sufficiently working).
Give that Google is callign it an update to JB, I am hopeful that those devices already running JB can get it pushed out to them fairly quickly.
In the long run google would like to see less fragmentation and a more cohesive Android echosphere. So if we do a holding pattern around JB, with upgrades and added features, for another year or two, I can imagine that those on 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 and of course 4.0 will upgrade to new devices running 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3... all JB.
I think 4.2 is terrible. I don't want a blown up phone UI on a tablet! Tablets should have specifically tuned ui's like they do now.

You can't if you already are on Jelly Bean (> 4.1) and hadn't rooted your device on ICS. At least if you have a locked device. If you unlock you will lose the ability to update your device OTA.

I just want to know the legitimacy of this claim for the 4.3 update, because if this is true it means that our developers (Flumpster, NRGZ, ETC) will be able to make stock based Roms with the newest capabilities without having to use the TF300 or TF700.

I had contacted them as well and this post felt very misleading promising me that 4.3 was going to be released... but at least our devoted developers can port it over from the TF700 and the TF300.

If this is true it would be nice...although I Have my doubts that ASUS will update the prime...They have left us in 4.1.1....when I contacted them directly to ask about 4.2 update they said they had no plans of updating it to it. I have the feeling we won't see anymore official updates from ASUS. I hope I am wrong.

Maybe they did not want to release 4.2 because it did not have significant changes. Hopefully they should push 4.3

Yeah, I like that straw. I will grasp it also .
though of course 4.2 did introduce some significant features
I wouldn't count on it, considering that there was a post quoting an ASUS rep denying 4.2 will come to the TF201.

It sounds great. I just have bought a TF201 but When I reboot iI see a notice " Your drive is unlook" which problem is my tablest?
Several other devices have skipped 4.2 on and gone straight to 4.3, so this might just be possible. I do think 4.3 will run better on a greater variety of devices, and will probably be more widely adopted.
A Q3 release of a 4.3 update would be awesome news.
Anandtech claims that 4.3 includes TRIM support, which supposedly improves internal storage performance over time, so it might just show some real improvement on the tf201.
Well, I wouldn't count on it. This device has felt pretty much dead in the year 2013. However it works almost decently with 4.1 and the root fixes.
I seriously doubt you will get 4.3 for the prime. It makes no sense as you never officially got 4.2.
However it's easy enough to port TF700 and TF300 ROMs back to the TF201 as flumpster and I have done
I'm about to sell this tab anyways for the new nexus 7. 10 inches just isnt portable enough
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda premium
I sold mine 2 weeks ago. It had to go before the new Nexus got announced.
I actually don't care i have to say :-\ androwook is awesome but the internal memory isn't going to get any faster which is the only problem with this tablet..
I hope so for 4.3 on our TF201
I hope we get the 4.3 update on our TF201, cause there seem to be an added TRIM support in 4.3 that could help some of our performance issues.

It's called trim. And if you are rooted, you can already use it on your tablet (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix).
Thanks it was a typo for TRIP instead of TRIM
Just some question about that apps, on my TF201 should I Trim everything including system or Just /data and /cache ?

I'm going to give this a go. I'll report back. I'm on a Energy 4.1.1 because the 4.2 ROMS seemed to be draining my battery faster so I'm overclocked at 1.7 w/Kernel.
Would a application even make a difference? Just curious.. I cant really say I notice much lag unless I'm browsing and it hangs...
Im running it for the first time on my prime right now. (lagfix, not a 4.3 OTA - lol)
Used the motochopper root to not have to unlock or change anything bootloader related to gain root.
Was very easy to do, enable developer options, enable debugging, wait for windows to install ADB stack, run the batch, literally like 2 seconds and bam, rooted.
FStrim/lagfix must be doing something right now cos the moment I hit run, the whole tab started running like balls (my guess is lots of command to the cheap emmc since its never been done before)
Im going to let it go, It should help ever so slightly, I dont have real high hopes though since I know just how bad the emmc is.:good:

THIS
So does anyone have any idea if this TRIM wosit-thingy might actually help the creaky old prime?
It sounds like the right medicine but i'm not even slightly getting my hopes up.
i still love the cracked screen rollin', broke-ass camera slingin', i/o-phobic thing though...
It does. TRIM + a cold boot once a week makes a night-and-day difference on my model (C, early 2012)
