Anyone going to work on ROMs?

SDK aka software development kit is to help developers create apps compatible with jelly bean, not going to help with rom development.

We had gingerbread ROMs based off the SDK on the Incredible..
What about the PDK, thought I saw something about that being released on the I/O?

It does indeed help with rom development. Just not as easy.
I think it might help get it quicker too because the European version probably will get jelly bean quicker...

I have no idea what the PDK is. That's something new I think.
But, yes, SDK can be used to develop ROMs, we just need to get a kernel developer to figure those out and make sure they are compatible. It likely won't happen until the OTA's hit in mid-July but the fact that the Galaxy Nexus is getting the OTA bodes well for us I think...

PDK as explained is the development kit for Physical Hardware, in other words for the Manufacturers. If developers that makes ROMs can get their hands on this one, then it would make it ALOT easier for them to create the ROMs. And the other nice thing they said is that the PDK was to be available for the Hardware Manufacturers 3-4 months before release, which should decrease the amount of time it takes for the manufacturers to release the next OS version. The problem is to try to get this from Google if you are not a hardware manufacturer.
And then there is still the issue with the drivers which is what the manufacturers sits on.
I know it doesn't help us get updates on the GS3 just bec the GN gets one, but having the GN getting the OTA can help us with ROM development esp if we have the kernels to work with.

It would seem then that Samsung should have been working on Jelly Bean for quite some time. What are the chances they release JB on the GS3 in the next 2 months if they have had 3-4 months to work on it?
They had ICS since at the latest last October and here it is June before they are releasing ICS for GS2. Seems the lead time is ~8 months. So if they had PDK 4 months ago and it takes them 8 months, then we should see JB in October/November. Unless the PDK somehow makes it easier to develop the ROM...

There are certainly some great features in there, but I think the "haven't been this excited about an OS yet" statement might be a little much. I'd say the milestone releases, 4.0 and 2.0 were certainly much more exciting than this. If it was intended to be the most exciting update yet, it would've had a version number to reflect that. Just saying.
Having said that... I'm pretty excited too, but it'll likely take Sammy a little while to push an official update if you're like me and don't root right away.
I want to see Project Butter and the new notifications in action!

I doubt Samsung has had the Jellybean PDK for four months already. Jellybean probably hasn't been finalized for that long.

My understanding was that google tried the early release this time around by giving it to the manufacturers two weeks before I/O. It is for the future releases that it was going to be 3-4 months.

Depends. The VSync governor and CPU prespread is rather a quantum leap. Yes, it's not massively exceeding the introduction of the 2.2 Dalvik JIT but it's going to push Android along and, likely, past the Cupertino Competition.
Not to mention "Butter" was the coolest code name, yet. Chet (who's also doing the "For Butter or for Worse" session tomorrow, gave a good impromptu hallway intro to some of us, and it's exciting. VERY exciting.
I flashed the toro version of the Jelly Bean SDK port to my Nexus and holy hell its so smooth. Much smoother than my GSIII. I can't begin to think how smooth this device will be especially since the screen is much more sensitive and responsive than my Nexus. 4.1 is what 4.0 should have been. The Google Now feature provided INSTANT response with no lag. Its almost like talking to a person. Im really impressed with jelly bean and hope Samsung provides timely updates.

Considering Samsung subscribes to the "want to upgrade your OS, upgrade the phone" philosophy, I am not sure we'll see JB on the S3 any time soon. I'd presume we'll see an AOSP Rom soon-ish, though, given the number of S3 owners at Google I/O that just stared and lusted...

Im not too sure if that will happen, from what im reading the devices that will support ICS are going to be gingerbread devices
If there isnt a gingerbread ROM/kernel it probably wont support ICS
at best it will be as stable as the most stable gingerbread ROM... so not too bad
Im wondering if it will work with the honeycomb kernel the devs are creating from scratch
Theoretically the tablet has the specs to run ICS but its a matter of Google making the source code open source. If it was anything like HC I think we're gonna be out of luck.
My understanding is that Google never intended to make Honeycomb open source in the hopes of avoiding people attempting to put HC on their phones. ICS should be open source, and Google has already stated several times from what i have seen that they intend to make the codes public. I don't see why we wouldn't have a decent ICS rom out in the next month or two.

At the very least we should probably see a CyanogenMod version, since its an officially adopted Tablet. I'm looking forward to it.
I doubt it. We don't have an official honeycomb rom so I don't see ics being supported at all on gtab... I truly believe development for our gtab is officially dead.

Well, considering that HC was never officially released as open source, I don't know why you would expect a full-featured ROM when the best that anyone could do was essentially a modified bootleg of an existing tablet's firmware. There a TON of G-Tablets out there thanks to the Woot sales, so I think it would be silly to assume that just because development has hit a lull for the last few months that it is totally dead. Give it a few months, and I bet we will see a good ICS ROM made available for our G-Tablets.
I highly doubt that the g-tablet is dead. I myself and one of my friends imported one of these just to get our hands on it.
It will only be dead if people believe that we don't want firmware for it. There is plenty people out there that are looking forward to newer firmare, we just quietly wait patiently for the master coders to do their excellent work.
TBH, I can't thank everyone here enough for the hours they put in to their hobbies. Greatly appreciated.
Google has officially stated that they WILL be releasing the source to Ice Cream Sandwich, so it's VERY likely that there eventually be multiple ICS ROMs (including Cyanogenmod) for the G Tablet.
It's out
I just read that Google has released the source code....

This tablet is on life support. ROM development is a small fraction of what it used to be a year ago. Updates are scarce. Be grateful for the value we got out of it over the past year.
The time to move on is fast approaching... and my eye is on the Asus Transformer Prime.

Part of that is to blame on no Honeycomb source, why would devs waste time reverse engineering when they could wait for ICS? Someone will make an ICS ROM, the lull has been to blame on their actually being NOTHING to do on this device with no Honeycomb source.
Now if those Nvidia drivers end up being a pain, it might be another story.

You can blame the lack of source code, I think I'll stick with blaming Viewsonic for not pushing at all to get drivers or any type of updates to us on this device. Without Viewsonic or Nvidia providing drivers we're going to be in for a rough ride.

Since Feb Google execs have been saying most likely this fall or late Q4. I'm sure this Fall though and even this summer their might be leaked 4.1 roms spotted on devices. Jellybean will be 4.1 not 5.0 as the Nexus 7 got it. It definitely will be more of a software/driver update and performance tweaks with few new features but probably not a whole new UI that 4.0 brought us. It makes sense considering that's how it was since back on 2.1/2.2/2.3 versions of Android And not much has been leaked or given in regards as to what features it will bring. Only thing I can think of is the integration of Google chrome as the default browser in 4.1 that's it lol
Sorry for my mistake, I thought it was android 5.0. Can't wait for the leaks. Thanks for the reply phantomg93

No problem androidboy123 and I could be wrong about it not being 5.0. Everyone on the websites changed it from 5.0 to 4.1 because of the Nexus 7. I guess we will have to wait and see what # version Jellybean will be when it starts rolling out on phones
Jelly beam
Probably we will not recive it with OTA, maybie will get a Rom without sense
Jellybean
I would say that how the EVO 3D got screwed over, we probably won't see Jellybean on our phones. It has been suggested that manufacturers should charge for major ROM updates and I would be willing to do so (provided the cost was reasonable). Hell, I would have paid for ICS to get it 6 months sooner.
Naturally, Apple would say how their updates are free and flaunt that in front of everyone. :\
*Sigh*
well... the 3vo might get 4.1 ... but chances are by the time jelly bean hits the market we still wont have the 4.0.3 from sprint... but if they follow their normal pattern, chances of seeing it are good more than likely as a End Of Life update sometime next year, but none the less, chances are probably a lot higher that the wonderfull devs that are still with us will port it fairly soon after they get a chance to play with it a little, or that vm will probably update there 3vo sooner, and we may end up with another questionable leak, but I can say with almost abosolute certinty that well get it in due time, untill then we will have the marithon wait that we did for ics. :good:

yay. my dream of all those threads being closed came true. lmao. I lost count of how many threads there were. But answer... It is very unlikely we'll get it through normal terms on our phones. I don't even know what the difference is to the new jelly bean anyway compared to 4.0. New phones will always get the new OS before a year old phone gets it. Simple as that. Most companies don't support their products after 6 months anyway. *which is really sad*
Anyway, Sure I hope we get the best since I still believe our phone is the best on the market. Having LTE phone isn't a buying factor. there won't be a LTE network for sprint for another year or so. But anyway, GO JELLY BEANS. btw for everyone. You're all my new favorite friends. You rock.

I'm really just hoping that Sprint EVO 3D owners get an official ICS OTA and that HTC gets around to releasing the source soon. I don't expect HTC to bring Jelly Bean to the EVO 3D, but if we get the new kernel source, we can just do it ourselves.

I think so, and I really hope so. The two factors that slow down updates for devices are custom tweaks (Sense, TouchWiz, etc.) and drivers (like for our 3D camera and autostereoscopic screen). If Google's moves can help speed up the process and minimize the work that needs to go into updates, such as 4.1 being on the same kernel (or at least one with very minor changes), hopefully that will encourage and enable manufacturers to bring the upgrades to more devices sooner. If the Android ecosystem can ever reach a point where new OS versions only take a couple of months at most to reach supported devices, it would be a dream come true.

Don't get too excited about JB just yet as it Flash won't work on it (see link below).

Eh, for me at least, I'm not too concerned about Flash. It's a dying breed as it is, with HTML 5 replacing it at a decent rate. I'd rather have the OS enhancements of Jelly Bean than Flash. But, that's just me, and I get the impression that you use Flash sites more often than I do.
I would expect some devs to port components of Jelly Bean to ICS, such as the notifications. It wouldn't have the Buttery goodness of JB, though.

Buh-Zing!
JB
Hey guys.
I consider being able to handle/see flash a requisite of seeing the real web but at the same time, I dislike it. Can't wait till it is dead.
I'm guessing we won't see any "official" JB so not to nag but what is a typical time course [predicted?] for when we may see unofficial JB roms for CDMA Evo 3D, if ever? I'm just wondering order of magnitude type thing: 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 2 year...?
Couldn't we just use dolphin or ics browser+ for flash sites? I think chrome is the only browser that is not supporting flash... (not positive though)
Hi Kazuni et al, are you developing a non-Samsung themed JB ROM for the I9305? Something like the many CM10/ParanoidAndroid ROMs that are available for the I9300? Would be great to have a "purer" ROM for this new flagship....less of the Samsung customization
This has been discussed several times before but the I9305/I9300 share most of the same components, less the radio correct? If so, would the I9300 ROMs work if they're used w/ a 9305 radio instead? So it would be an easier way to port 9300-developed ROMs over?
Would love to see this, esp if it's built on the new 4.1.2!
There are other differences as well like a different partition layout, but I guess that they might partially work if configured with a compatible layout, would likely have no sound or modem functionality without proper work, a Rom compiled for this model would be better.

Some of our guys are very sick of samsung and are not going to touch any of the new samsung devices.
Not saying that nobody will port it, but i recommend you to sell this device as fast as possible and get a new upcoming nexus device if you really wanna run AOSP based roms.
If you like laggy and buggy AOSP roms and especially waiting for round about 6 months to get a new android version, stay on what you're currently owning.

It's a exynos development board and has not much to do with samsung smartphones.
The ICS code was broken, outdated and mostly unusable on phones.
The same code is now available again.
I really don't expect a wonder.
From what andreilux has seen and stated below it does not seem like the old stuff and samsung continue to update. Last update was done earlier today here is what andreilux said in the exynos petition page in the i9300:
(They released the 5250 development board and site together with a 800 page user's manual, something which we didn't have before for any SoC. I'll have to see what they uploaded on the Git as it's quite a lot.
Edit: from what I can see at first glance they have 4.1.1 Jellybean sources up there and apparently the newest stuff.

Omfg sorry for spam but the dev will build really ROMs?
Sorry Spaming here but a CM10 Rom for my I9305 would be realy Great.
+1 to non-Samsung-based JB rom like CM10, PA or PACman's mix of all three I'm picking up my i9305 this weekend (South Africa) and really hope that some of the big dev's take to this handset.. number of roms at current is dis-heartening :crying: :crying:

It's a exynos development board and has not much to do with samsung smartphones.
The ICS code was broken, outdated and mostly unusable on phones.
The same code is now available again.
I really don't expect a wonder.

Hi codeworkx.. this is a copy of a post I made on another i9305 thread, it seems more relevant here tho..
Samsung have released the source code for the i9305.. here and I noticed it's also on Github here does this mean there's a chance of more dev's buying into this device for custom rom and kernel devving
defibitely deserves a plus one on this. cm10 porterssss please i would love to experience a proper stock jb theme

Does any one know?
I've been use it since android 2.3 & sense 3.0,and I hope it can running the newest 4.4 os.
I also thx to all developers for shooter, thank all of you.
I think it will come soon
If you are waiting for anything official then its gonna be a long wait. but the devs here will certainly have custom roms up soon.
I'm not going to hope for it on our ancient hardware.
4.4 is not a whole lot different from 4.3
you shouldn't lose hope just yet
Infact have a look at helicopter88's Omnirom thread. he gave a little sneak peak on what hes working on next.
Hint: it involves chocolate

Supposedly they made the software so light that it can run on any android that has at least 512 MB of RAM. It would work on the Evo if someone ported it. It's pretty much a given that HTC won't push an OTA.
