thanks to deathnotice01
a little add-on:
convert first the .9.png to RGB format since the default for 9.png is index format, index is complicated to theme since the colors and transparency will go wrong,
same with activity_bar.9.png, popup_***.9.png, and etc.
saving the indexed 9.png as default will cause the package to either corrupt or look really ugly
in photoshop its Image>Mode>RGB (Shortcut Alt+I+M+R)

text color is different depending on framework,
you need to change xmls on values/, modules/, and colors/,
honestly even i don't have any luck editing any text color

edit 9.png
How to edit 9.png (simple basic way)
1. Open file u want to edit with photoshop or any image editor, example popup_full_dark.9.png
2. the original image is blue, i want to change to red
3. after u change the color save that file (dont rename) and close. Remember dont touch that black line at left, right, top and bottom
4. now open draw9patch.bat from android-sdk tool.
5. drag that file which u saved previously to draw9patch.bat
6. press show bad patches and tick all boxes
7. now zoom image and patch scale which is fit u
8. as u can see there are bad patches in ur image, just edit black line at left and top with one black dot (1 and 2)
9. now ur image dont have bad patches, just save that file and ur ready to compile it
note:
1. im just a noob
2. this is easy simple basic tutorial from me, maybe different from other tutorial, i tested and work
3. just play around with ur photoshop or image editor to get transparent or etc etc
4. im just a noob, press thanks if u like it

This will NOT change the color of your status bar. This will only add a transparent background to the drop down bar and place the Droid on the bottom right corner.
***Make sure USB Debugging is checked under Settings>Application>Development***
Here's how it's done:
1. Download & install Stericson's NinjaMorph from the Market
2. Place your desired Droid image on your SDcard and rename it to status_bar_background.png (doesn't matter where you put it)
3. Launch NinjaMorph and click tap on New Project
4. Go to /system/framework/twframework-res.apk (Files will get extracted and a backup is created automatically)
5. Go into /res/drawable-hdpi and find status_bar_background.png
6. Tap on the file and it will now ask you to find the image you want to replace it with
7. Find the file you placed on your SDcard and tap on it
8. You will get a warning asking if you're really sure you want to replace it (Tap Yes)
9. Tap on the blue arrow on the bottom right corner
10. Tap on Finish Project
11. Tap on twframework-resapk (NinjaMorph will now package/create the apk)
12. You will get a warning asking if you're sure you want to overwrite the apk (Tap Yes)
13. You will now get a warning asking if you want to zipalign (optional)
14. Tap ok on the next warning
15. Choose if you want to delete the project
Your phone should now reboot automatically and you should have your new Droid on your drop down notification bar that looks like this.

Thanks for sharing!
Looks great man, thanks for the mention. I'm about to flash now. Do you have a stock to revert?
eh I guess I can make a stock real quick...
I'm rocking the Green Android and it looks awesome. I've already shown it to a lot of the other Android Fans here at work, all are very impressed. Good job with everything man. Yeah, being able to revert is always nice rather than restoring a nandroid backup....
OP updated with revert..
im in the process of putting the finishing touches on a stock theme/template...
everything will be in it... that came stock anyway... and it will give those that want to start theming a little push in the right direction...
I will probably do a short demo of me morphing a bar from stock to crazy... start to finish
you sir are the man. If you do find time to do that, please make sure I know so I can add it to my sticky in the General section. That would help a ton, and lets be frank, the more people theming, the better for us all.
good job, this looks nice. I got the red and green
It did say the file doesn't exist so when I close it and go to existing to open the file there's nothing in it...trying to get the red one
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
looks great... thank you...
instructions for use:
open metamorph (MM)
click unzip extract new
(error occurs)
open MM
click pick existing
click Droid_xxx
click Droid_xxx
click Droid_xxx.xml
click close
click apply all
reboot after it finishes
When I click existing and then droid_red there are no files In it
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
check with a file explorer... if you can copy it into the root/directory of the theme it will be easier to find.. you're looking for Droid_Red.xml
if its not there redownload...
Just unzip the file then move the folder to the metamorph themes folder and select existing theme and click on the xm fileand apply all.
Yeah my comp double folders everything when it zips, or MM does it unzipping... IDK, it works if you apply manually by selecting the xml file..
Yeah I think this is breaking my market app. FC after downloading an app, reverting back to stock to double check. Will keep you posted.
^ no issues here, 3 updates and 2 new apps.
Try this.. Go to settings, applications, manage applications, market, uninstall updates and Clear data
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I reverted back to original with no prevail. I did a Nandroid and market is working again. I did have the ClearBar Metamorph isntalled as well as the Segemnted Green battery status icon isntalled. Not sure if a mixture of these things was the problem or if something just went wrong the first install.
I wills say a great mod for sure, looks great!
This may sound dumb, but would I be able to use morphs like these on my Captivate?

[TUTORIAL] How to Theme

Ok guys, I'm looking to everyone who knows how to theme to contribute. I've been scouring the internet and I just cannot find a definitive HOW TO for creating a theme. There are bits of information here, dead links there, and lots of going back to square one.
I'm hoping we can pull together as a community and get the information posted up. I can take that info and add screenshots afterwards for whatever you guys contribute.
What I've Gathered:
Create a Nandroid backup in case of a softbrick!
The easiest way to create a theme is by using NinjaMorph. NinjaMorph is an app in the market, there's a paid version and a free version.

Once you have NinjaMorph, you can open .apk's to edit the images and XML files inside of them. Open NinjaMorph on your phone and start a New Project. After that, navigate to system then framework and open up framework-res.apk. Once you open it, NinjaMorph will extract everything in that APK. In our case, framework-res is one of the big boys in making a theme, namely the status bar. Leave NinjaMorph and connect your phone to your computer. After mounting your phone, navigate to your phone's internal memory, not your SD Card, and go to the AndroidThemes folder. In this folder is a folder called workspace. In that folder is your newly extracted framework-res.apk. You can copy the contents of this folder to your computer and then edit the files as you feel necessary.
I recommend keeping a copy of the original workspace so that you can revert any changes, if you don't like them. Also a good idea is to keep a nandroid backup handy in case you screw something up and softbrick your phone.
Once you are done making files, you need to replace the old files that are inside of the workspace folder on your device and then unmount your phone. Go back to NinjaMorph and then hit finish your project. Ninjamorph will automatically re-apk the files into a framework-res.apk and then re-apply the framework-res.apk. Your phone will reset and you should be good to go.
Now, you CANNOT change the clock color or the text color of the notifications list unless you edit the services.jar file from your phone. This is where we need more information. I'm hoping the good people of XDA can chime in and help everyone benefit and get some seriously sick themes coming out. We can't until everyone spreads some information on how to do this!!
Thanks for this useful post!

This should be a sticky. And 2 things.
1 If I want to edit the status bar Whats the png name and where's it located?
2. How do I change the png icons color? Like without it turning into a .img or a. Gif?
Sent from my unicorn
The png file is status_barxxxx_9
This is how I do...
Adb pull and rename the extension to .zip open framwork-res.apk.zip with 7zip and extract only the files you want to edit,make changes and put the file back into the zip file and rename back to framwork-res.apk adb push.
Reboot...

Basic Framework Edits

this is a very basic guide to change colors and maybe icons if you've suitable icons..
I don't know anything about signing apks and stuffs but I did the following steps and it worked for me...
THINGS YOU'LL NEED :
7zip
Any Imaging Software that can handle PNG files(I use PHOTOSHOP)
FRAMEWORK-RES.APK file
STEPS :
Right Click on your framework-res.apk
Click 7-zip->Open Archive
go to res folder
Extract drawable-mdpi anywhere on your pc
edit the files you want with your imaging software and save them
now drag the modified files to the drawable-mdpi folder in the zip file
Open the drawable-mdpi folder in your zip file
select the modified files, hold and drag to the zip archive and leave it
it will ask you to add the files or not
just click yes
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
Close the file
Push your framework into your phone
(I use Xrecovery mode for pushing it, cuz its safe)
Code:
[B]busybox cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk[/B]
---------------------------END------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT TIPS
if you're upto modifying colors than you may notice that some files have extension .9.png they need special way to edit (actually not so special lol)
just open them in your imaging program
you'll notice few black dots and black border
something like this
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
keep those black things as they are, and mess around with the other colors
-----------------------------END QUOTE----------------------------------
for now I've just tested this with colors and few icons and it works
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
if anyone needs this framework (I changed the green color to orange, changed the lock symbol to stock it was too small and colored some of the network indicators from white to green lol)
FRAMEWORK-RES.APK.7z
Good. i tried to change the xml files. but the process needed me to use apktool to decompile the framework-res.apk.
when i used original framework-res-apk, it decompiled successfully, but when I used gingerbread framework-res.apk by pulpoff, errors about the .9.pngs occur.

yeah.. i used gingerbread theme's icons and they worked however you can only replace those which have the exact same name you know not everything is possible lol
nice work. can you explain how to change battery icon, i want it show percent, like 58% in front of the icon. i think that's what people need most
I see now, that in framework 'res' folder, in 'drawable-land-mdpi', we have stock layouts of Lock Screen (i mean, stock bar for unlock move and sound).
How can I set it to default? I don't like that SE original LockScreen theme...
Find all the icons named as SEMC_slidingtab and replace them the way you want

[GUIDE] Re-Sizing .9.PNGs using Draw9Patch and xUltimate 9PatchCompiler

Hello Guys,
I was just getting bored so decided to share some of my knowledge regarding compiling and editing .9.PNGs using draw9patch tool from Android SDK and xUltimate 9PatchCompiler. This is based on what I learnt when I created my Ice Cream Sandwich Theme.. This is not for N00BS. It's just for people who are willing to learn new things.. There are easy methods to do this but I like this one.
I am not responsible for any damages caused due to following this guide.
WHAT YOU NEED -
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
1. The Android SDK ( It contains Draw9Patch Tool ) (requires JDK for installation)
2. xUltimate 9PatchCompiler
3. Photoshop/GIMP (For Resize)
4. APK Manager (For Decompiling APKs)
5. Common Sense
6. Lots of Patience and some experience in de-compiling APKs
HOW TO -
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
1. De-compile the APK whose .9.PNG you want to re-size using APK Manager (you need to decompile as you need Raw APK for resize otherwise it will look weird). Browse to that decompiled .9.PNG. You will notice Black LINES/DOTS are in border of that .9.PNG (see the example Pic Below)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2. Now carefully observe these lines and remember how it looks. You need to remember the pattern on how these lines are drawn. Every Line/Dot is important and if you fail to realize you will end up with an error during last few steps.
3. Suppose you need to re-size the APK to a x b px resolution then open up Photoshop/GIMP or any editor and re-size the image to a+2 x b+2 px resolution.
4. You will notice some Lines/Dots will disappear. It's all fine.
5. Now browse to directory where you have installed Android SDK and go to TOOLS folder in it and fire up the file named draw9patch, when you are done it will open like image below.
6. Now go to File and click Open 9Patch and then open the .9.PNG you just resized to a+2 x b+2 px , it will look something like
7. Now construct the missing lines on basis on the pattern you memorized before re-sizing image. Be careful, and draw cautiously. To draw you just need to drag mouse while left-clicking. You can delete lines by pressing shift button and and left clicking and dragging.
8. When done, go to file again and save the image.
9. Go to directory where you image was there and copy it.
10. Navigate to directory where you have extracted 9Patch Compiler ZIP and paste the .9.PNG to GO-INSIDE/res/drawable-mdpi.
11. Go back to main folder and click xUltimate-COMPILER this will generate a folder done in same directory if you have drawn lines properly.
12. Go to /done/GO-INSIDE/res/drawable-mdpi and you will find there is your .9.PNG compiled with no black Lines/Dots.
YOUR 9.PNG is ready for use.
reserved for something i forgot..
a good video for the 9.png is found here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfrXE2R2nqM&feature=related
it´s a bit long with a lot of text, but it is worth to view and to get a good start with this guide.
A better example would be one a picture with a letter or a pattern in it, a uni color png is not very good for a graphical explanation for what the black lines are good for and what the effect will be.
No offense bro, just a tick to improve this topic.
cheers
qaysed

If you can photoshop a little they are very easy to make.
Just find a cool battery icon and rebuild it a little
Basically you need 7 .PNG's of 320x480 pixels names charging_animation_01.png --to--chargning_animation_07.png and copy them in your system folder.
but if not, then just check around here, there are more sequences to be found.
I'll make more myself in the future and post them here.

10x.the second version is much cooler than the first one.:good:
I used photoshop to make my own offline charging animation using the following configuration: 320x480, RGB, 8bit, .PNG format.
Inside the Rom (gallery for example), all .PNG files are perfectly shown; but the odd thing is, all red colors are shown blue in the device during offline charging. Any idea on root of the problem?
one question
how did you got the star under the thanx meter?
and great work

If you mean menu->image->mode->"indexed colors" in Photoshop, yes I tried in vain.

You should not use these colors.
Best is always to 'save for web' > shift+ctrl+alt+s
just select PNG-24 there and deselect transparency.
Have 'Convert to sRGB' enabled and set it to monitor colors
if that doesn't work, i really have no clue..

I tried what you kindly suggested. The result is the same as before. :crying:
Thanks anyway for your advice. At least I learned something new.
good job, thanks!!!
It's my first post, so don't be angry at me.
Is it possible to add more that 7 images?
If not, anyone know why...pngs' are linked or something with some other files in root?
Thanks for help.

for the battery sequence you can only use 7 images.
Think it's a system setting. Might be able to hack around that, but have no clue where
