just bought a note. the problem I'm having is that i can't access the settings. i press it and nothing happens. also the screen turns on randomly stays on. I searched around and I'm wondering if this may have been a store display with a settings disabled so no one messes with it. Is there anything i can do?
Try and enter recovery by pressing volume keys and power until it vibrates then let go of the power button. Once in recovery do a system wipe. Sounds like some heavily corrupted android.

My Power button quit working yesterday. I am trying to remap my volume button to wake the screen, and be the new power button. I can't seem to get it to work. I am rooted and I am using root explorer to edit the text.
I have found a number of apps that will wake my screen and some of them work okay, but I have to have lock screen enabled because of my corporate email, and once the screen locks, the apps don't work.
Also, I am worried that if my phone ever get's powered down (runs out of battery), I don't know how I would turn it back on.
Any advice???

I need a physical button. I'm rooted on Gingerbread and I want to update to ics but I can't figure out how to fastboot without a physical power button
There's a few apps in the store like 'quickboot' that'll allow you to boot into fastboot if rooted. Just remember for menus like recovery, you're likely to be stuck once you need to use the power button to select an option

Send it to service to get it repaired. It's pretty cheap for repairing a single button.
ok so I'm new to this forum, was suggested to go here when i got my first smartphone.
So basically my idiot friends were messing with my phone with the pattern lock. They messed it up 15 times and now I have to sign in with my gmail. But the problem is that whenever I try to sign in, it gives me invalid username/password. I know I'm putting in the right password and right username because I've done it about a million times on my computer and tried to unlock my phone about the same amount of times. I've also tried all my other gmails that my phone is registered with but none work.
I'm still on stock ICS because im new to the android world and haven't gotten around to figuring out everything. Thanks for helping!
Okay first did you possibly have your Android debugging on? If not the only way us a factory reset. You can reset it by turning it off, hold down power and volume down. While holding volume down let go of the power. Then using your volume keys select factory reset and select with the power button.

Okay so first press down the Vol. Down button. Next press the power button firmly for 3 seconds. DO NOT let go of the Volume down button till a white screen (Your bootloader) appears. Then use the volume buttons to select factory reset (If it's not there look for bootloader or somthing like that) press the power button to select.
Volia your phone is now factory reset!

I want to turn off my power button when my screen is off, since my phone keeps restarting itself when I have it in my pocket.
I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389946 and tried to follow it. I couldn't find a sec_key.kl file, but there's a bunch of files such as AVRCP.kl, generic.kl, gpio-keys.kl, qwerty.kl and sii9234_rcp.kl . Reading them, I figured that I should modify gpio-keys.kl, as it contains the line ≫key 116 POWER WAKE≪. I tried removing WAKE and rebooting my device, but nothing is changed: my power button still turns the screen on.
Any ideas on how to solve this? I'm running 4.1.2, VikingWay v. 2.3 rom, which is a modified touchwiz rom (which I'm sure haven't changed the keys in any way).
Even if you disable the wake function, longpressing it will turn the device off, there's not a way to change that. It works from recovery, even without a ROM, even when the phone freezes completely, so it's hardwired
so there is no chance? (mod or something else)
if it's really hard-wired than it's a feature
I don't think your phone is rebooting because your pressing the power button.
Its probably some software issue by rom kernel or smtn u installed

Exactly.
Are you on a custom kernel if so try flashing it again, or maybe you are oc/uv. If nothing works flash the rom again.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
it's definitly not the custom rom!
if my phone is in a handybag i have no problem,
but when i change the back case und put it in a handybag i have reboots... (back case is metallic. so the phone is larger and there is less space left in the bag --> pushing the power button)
it could be the long pressing power button in the lockscreen, which opens a windows with shutdown, reboot,...

Check what eMMC chip you have, then Flash a kernel with the sudden death fix if you are not safe. I remember someone said their phone was rebooting occasionally before it died. You may not have the same problem but it is better to be safe.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
the emmc check app says "NO Sane chip", eMMC chip 10/2012
so what is this sudden death fix?
i think the problem is, that the metallic back case makes the phone larger and so the power button would be pressed when it's in my handybag..
I was rooted and unlocked with freegee running Houston's root box, ME's kernel updated to the new boot loader. I tried to boot into recovery to update twrp. The phone rebooted and when it would have went to recovery it went black. I could hold the power button for20 seconds, let go and hold it for three seconds and it would boot. I did some trouble shooting and got nothing so I lgnpst back to stock. Now I can turn it on and use the phone until the screen locks. Once the screen locks if I hit the power button it stays black but the home, back and menu buttons light up if I tap the screen it even makes noise and vibrates. It just doesn't show anything. I rooted and unlocked again thinking maybe I could flash some aosp and it would work but instill couldn't get into recovery. Any ideas?

EDIT 2: FIXED, thank you Checkm8!

Original Question:
My phone won't boot into recovery by using the manual method. I can boot into it no problem using GooManager to tell the phone to reboot into recovery, but no by powering off my phone, then holding down the power button and volume up. The phone'll vibrate and say "RECOVERY BOOTING" in blue in the upper left, but the screen will just go black and the phone will boot normally after 2 seconds.
This isn't a big problem by itself, but my phone also seems to have a problem with wiping system on its own or something, because multiple times of rebooting my phone just to reboot, the phone won't boot at all. It'll just stay at the "Galaxy S4" splash screen.
EDIT: Flashing to complete stock using Odin doesn't fix the recovery issue, tried it multiple times.
I had a similar issue but it was my fault. I figured out later hold (in this order) volume up, home, and power buttons. Once the phone vibrates, let go of the power button but continue holding the other two until you see "Recovery Booting". Let me know if that works for you.

You are correct sir.... Its not like the S3 that you had to hold all 3 buttons until you saw "Recovery Booting"..

Thanks, that got it to boot into recovery! But now it's just sitting at the "teamwin" screen and has been for the past 5 minutes... I'm going to assume that it's a one time thing and carry on with my life regardless. but now I know how to boot int orecovery the right way! I had gotten it to boot when i first got the phone a few times but I guess I had since started doing it incorrectly.
