Hey guys, I'm kind of stumped on an issue I've been having for the past week. First of all, I have a Photon which is stock, still on 2.3.4, and is not rooted. Last week, I gave my HTC Hero to my girlfriend for her birthday (yes it's old, but she's still on a rumor 2). I'd been primarily using the Hero and an 8 GB sd card in it as a media player to plug into my car stereo. Before I gave my girlfriend the Hero, I swapped out the 8 GB card for a 1 GB card I had laying around and instead put the 8 GB card into my Photon. The next day I noticed something strange happening. My notification ringtone was messing up. When the phone went to notify me of a text (it also happens with emails and other notifications), it would play a split second of the intro of a Brooks & Dunn song I happened to have on my sd card. After awhile of being annoyed by it, I decided I didn't like that song so much after all and just deleted it, hoping that would fix the problem. However, it did not. Today, I noticed it started doing the same thing with another song in the Brooks & Dunn folder on my sd card. I've tried changing the notification ringtone, rebooting the phone. Didn't work. My question is, why would it be doing this? Why is it trying to read from the Brooks & Dunn folder for a second before it plays the desired ringtone? It is obviously related to the sd card somehow because that is the only thing that had changed when it started doing this. If you guys have any insight as to why my phone is doing this, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: I forgot to mention. If needed, I can provide what apps I have installed as well as my folder hierarchy if that helps. Thanks.
1st and eazy-est try a factory reset.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can offer help with this. I've had my Atrix since launch and there's been about 4 times now (all seemingly after i've hooked the phone to computer with either phone portal, windows sync, or mass storage) where the assigned ringtones for contacts and even my regular ringtone has been changed or reassigned to some random song from my library. I don't know if there's something to hooking it up and it messes with the memory that juggles the ringtones/songs or what. Does anyone else have this problem and if so, has it been addressed/fixed? Thanks in advance for any help offered.
I have the exact same issue and have been posting about it on the Motorola forum as well. Over there the Motorola folks ask you questions and try to get a fix out to everyone, so please check it out if you haven't already.
My issue has happened a lot morethan yours it seems, however, I use extra batteries, so the phone reboots more often.
This is what I posted over there a little while ago:
Internal phone storage keeps disappearing
The "Disappearing ringtones" discussion was closed and merged with this one, but my issue is not the same as the internal memory being wiped.
My files are still on the card and internal memory, but the contacts, alarms, messaging, calendar, etc apps can't remember the tones I set.
I have copied the files to the following locations with the same issue recurring:
/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/system/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard-ext/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard-ext/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
Even after moving them with RootExporer to the "non-mountable" storage (/system) they are still reassigning and setting to "unknown".
Possibly related issue. The playlists I create with MixZing, winAmp, and astro are empty are the phone reboots.
Occasionally I get the "no files" error when I check the mounted card in file manager, but if I manualy unmount and remount the card, they are still there.
I keep missing calls, texts and having my alarms "silent". This is getting frustrating. I bought the Atrix on launch day so I need to exchange NOW if that is what is needed.
Other than the above and the losing data connection issue, I LOVE THIS PHONE
Yeah, i've placed my ringtones (all .m4a format) on both the internal/external memory slots and for some reason, when it gets hooked up i'm in the same boat you are...very frustrating i've missed calls and messages as well. surprising that no one from Moto has a resolution for it...
I've run into the same problem, and was planning on moving 'em into the /system/media folder...but it sounds like that won't fix it. Drats.
I've had this issue as well. The random song problem seems to only affect contacts I have set up with a custom tone. No telling what song/sound will play for which contact. Otherwise it has simply changed my default ringtone to a particular mp3 that then becomes the default tone. Really weird.
I do still have the issue with the files in the /system folder, but much less. So I would try them there to lessen the problem. Westill need a complete fix though.
This issue is still a problem. There are even some apps that can't see the files on the internal card or external card. Even after the OTA update this problem is driving me crazy.
I think you dont hear about this issue more because some people dont connect there phone to the computer or remove the battery often. It seems to be a problem with reading the info off the card when it is remounted. On my captivate when I remounted the card it would always scan the card. This phone doesn't.
Any ideas.
Yeah I had this problem too. Was the only thing, and I mean the only thing I didn't like about this phone. I found the only way to fix it is to root the phone and move your personal ringtones to the '/system/media/audio/ringtones' folder using Root Explorer (you can buy it oin the market. Great app BTW). This solved all my problems. I know it's not "right" but it works great. Now I have zero problems with this phone.

In Root Explorer, at the top, hit the R/W button.
Ive mounted to the computer often, resboot every day, pull battery every now and then.. I dont have this problem. Ever try Ringdroid?
First time happened was back in about a month ago. One day I noticed some of my pictures were gone ( may be 15 to 20 of them ) I could not find them in any where such as SD card internal/external the strange thing was some pictures still there until today so the defective SD card is ruled out and I was still using the stock firmware 2.3.3 then I also noticed there are other pictures ( almost 100 of them ) not actual pictures they just blank but all with different file names like: My piano, A day in Hollywood etc, etc.
No body has been messing up my phones because it stays with me at all times. The question is who deleted my pictures and put a bunch of files back? Could it be happened remotely like some one using Bluetooth to mess around if the person is happened to be near by? later on I upgraded my phone to 2.3.4 through KIES and hope it will help me to solve the mystery but it did not. By now I know those pictures are long gone...
Two or three days later I upgraded my phone to 2.3.5 until I found the official FW XWKL1 here in XDA, again, upgraded.
So some days later I decided to change song for my ringtone I found out all of them have been replaced by some files with number names. 41203,41204 the list go on...When I use Astro to look for my songs and they are all there ( inside the music folder ) I went back & click one of the number file to see what kind of song and the player pops up a message saying the file format is not supported. It took me almost 30 min to figure out and delete all the number files under MUSIC then I see all my songs back.
My question is has my phone been hacked or infected by viruses/spyware? Or software glitch? I don't have data plan. To go online I use my home wifi all the time.
If some one can help I'll be really appreciated.
Sounds like a problem with the sd card or phone itself.

But most of the pictures and songs are still there that was why I think the problem is not in SD card other than these problems the phone is functioning good in all aspect.
Highly doubt someones in ur phone.

Sounds like the card is corrupted. Just make a backup of everything on the card, and do a full format (not quick format) of it from your computer. That should fix it. I had a similar problem too recently. New files I transferred would get deleted and old deleted files would reappear. Maybe the file table is messed or something, I don't know, but a full format fixed it for me.
Note: Preferably use a card reader, or if you mount it as mass storage from your phone, do it from recovery if you're rooted. Otherwise just mount it as you would normally and proceed.

I had the same problem.
I had the same problem.
The solution was format SD card , after Back up some things i wanted from the card.
Alright, before I had issues with my ringtones changing randomly. After experimenting with file locations, which loader I was using (I use Handcent SMS for text), and so on, I read up on the forums and the issue seemed to be with the SD card. So, I took everything off of my 32GB SD card, and reformatted it fully, rather than "Quick formatting". It took forever, so I really don't want to have to do that every two months.
About a month later, this started happening again (keep in mind, the first time I was on stock, the second time I was rooted w/ Steelrom), so now that I had root access, I downloaded AntTek explorer (app), and moved my ringtones and notifications to the proper folders on the phone's memory
([Device Root>system>Media>audio>notifications] for notifications, and [Device Root>system>Media>audio>Ringtones] for ringtones, respectfully).
I added about 12 new ringtones, and 45 new notifications (people text me more than they call me).
It was working great for a bit. All of my ringtones still go off every time, which is good, but my notifications only go off about half the time, and the other half, my phone remains silent. The phone remembers the right files, and when I click "Test Notification", it plays the sound out loud. Yet, two minutes later, and when a text message comes in, my phone just vibrates.
Help? Maybe there's some kind of indexing file I need to edit or something..?
EDIT: Whoops, I meant to post in the Q&A section... Can a mod please move this..?
Have you set the default sound from within the stock msg app ???

Yes, and it doesn't fix it :/
Hello all, I had recently upgraded to a SanDisk Class 4 32GB microSD card and within a few days after I had merged all of my phone's data and my old sd's data, my pictures come up as broken files, and my music shows about 5-8 duplicates of each song but only a select few will play and the others will act like they're playing but no audio plays and the seconds of the song stays at zero. I even restart my phone with the sd out and the media scanner doesn't show that it's running, and I'm pretty sure it's not because when I go back to the music player I still see all of the songs that are on my sd and the pictures still show that they're broken...idk how the files still show in there without the sd card being in there, but I'm afraid I might have done something wrong when I had cut and pasted all of the files from the phone itself onto the sd. I have no real knowledge of android programming or rooting or anything like that so I figure it would help to mention my phone is stock but officially upgraded to 4.0.1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and could possibly help more users out there!
I think you have to go to settings-apps-all tab-media storage- clear data. I think I remember right. Maybe try it without your card in. Replace SD card and turn on phone and I think it will scan correctly.
Or something like that. Hope it helps
Yeah I've tried all of the available functions from the phone and also mounting & unmounting it. I'm assuming from being a windows user that I might have transferred over some sort of "playlist" that remembers all of the file extensions for each file, and since they're not located in their original place it cant find the file...idk but it really takes a toll on my drive to work!
Device:
ZTE Grand X (Bell Version) - Model Z933
Android 4.3
Kernel 3.4.0+
No root, stock everything.
I recently bought this ZTE Z933, and I've had some photos, videos, and music stored on the phone's storage for a while, and it worked fine.
Just in the past couple weeks, I put more videos, photos, and music onto an SD Card (4GB, FAT32) and put it into the phone, and now very often (almost daily) all of my picture browsing apps and music playing apps suddenly (and temporarily) are not able to detect ANY media on both the SD card and my phone's storage. But, if I browse my media through ASTRO or any other file manager, all the files are there and they work perfectly fine.
Rebooting the phone does nothing to fix this issue, and neither does accessing the storage through USB or unmounting and mounting the SD Card. For a while, the only fix I found was sometimes if I opened up one of my photos through ASTRO, and then closed it, about half the time it would temporarily fix the issue.
After a bit of searching, I found some threads on different sites about restarting the Media Scanner service (or something along that line) in Settings > Apps. I do not have this, but instead what I do have under Apps > Running > Cached, I have something called "Media", which, when I stop it and restart the phone, fixes the issue temporarily, but it works every time. The annoying thing about this is having to reboot, and losing all my ringtone and notification tone settings, and my playlists every time this happens.
Can anyone give me info on things to try? Or does anyone know of an app that will get me around this issue? (the phone has been reset pretty recently so I don't think that would solve it)
Any help would be very appreciated!
Hey how's it going? I to picked up one of these nice little phones and have yet to find anything as far as development on it, i.e root or any roms and ZTEusa has nothing on this phone. Every time I google it it shows another phone.
Its a great phone large screen and has quad core, if enough people post a wanted new thread on the request a thread forum we can get some help. There is a boot loader its just can anyone get root threw it. Also someone needs to try all of the towel root modstrings which are a lot and you might get it rooted. I really enjoy mine have had no problems with media, might be your sdcard is it an old one or a new one what class is it class10?
http://www.xda-developers.com/users-beware-zte-root-backdoor-found/
I just picked up this phone too.
Seems like root acess is simply password controled..
Maybe ztex1609523?
Anyone wanna jam that into an installer?
