[Q] Display Freezes on AOSP Roms - HTC Rezound

Hey guys,
I've been having an issue with AOSP roms where my display will just stop updating, Previously on one of Neo's ROM, and currently on CounterShrike 2.1. The screen doesn't turn itself off; it stays on, but freezes and doesn't change. I have to hit the power button to turn the display off and on again and it will work normally again for awhile.
It actually still accepts input when the display freezes. If I press the home button while it's frozen, it will be back on the home screen when I hit the power button off and on. If I'm in a list and scroll with my finger while it's frozen, it will be further down in the list when I hit the power button off and on.
I thought this was related to the proximity sensor bug but when I follow shrike's guide in the FAQ for setting up Chad's proximity sensor calibration, it already is showing 'FAR' when I first load the app and I don't need to adjust the high threshold. I think the sensor is fine.
Anyone have any other tips I can try? Everything works fine under CleanROM DE but AOSP is so much faster I'd really like to try and nail the issue down.
Thanks!
EDIT: I've attached a logcat. Two times I recorded the timestamp when it frozen, around 00:45 and 01:11. But I don't really know what to be looking for in the log cat.

thank god I'm not alone with this! I get this crap with any aosp based rom. I sent logcats to a few and nobody can't figure it out yet. sometimes it freezes but the display bleeds and fades itself off simultaneously

This is just an accepted problem with any AOSP ROM.
If you read the OPs they all mention graphics issues.
If you have been following the JellyBean stuff, they can't get any graphics to work at all.

really? the OP's for rage and aokp mention nothing about freezing or graphics being glitchy

Maybe unrelated, but I have recently discovered that if my fingers are even the tiniest bit wet or sweaty, my touch screen completely freaks out and becomes impossible to use. The only way to fix it is to turn the screen off, and turn it back on.

That is probably not an AOSP issue.

Yeah, I sorta agree.. but I never had noticed it until I started using CM9 ROMS.
Actually though, ever since the ICS leaks something has been a little off about the Rezound touch screen, even on Sense ROMs..
Sometimes when you swipe horizontally one direction quickly, it starts to go and then jerks back and actually scrolls the other way. Worked fine in GB for the 2 months I ever used it on this device....

This is true. I've stated this issue months back, sweat or a drop of liquid makes our screen act funny.

freezing occurs regardless, no moisture involved

What cpu governor and i/o scheduler are you using, do you know?
I've noticed freezes/slow response with either noop or deadline i/o scheduler. The powersave governor or turning cpu speed down too far can also cause freezing.
Occasional Graphical flickering in GUI elements does seem to be an issue with cm roms on multiple devices. I've had success turning on settings - developer - force gpu rendering to reduce flickering, YMMV.

I forget exacts but it's with whatever is default when first flashed. the logcats at the time didn't mention anything about the CPU itself but graphics and HDMI errors with different invalid sound outputs as well

I experience this on multiple AOSP rom's! My phone was fine with sense based rom's but AOSP freezes. Sometimes it doesn't freeze at all, sometimes it's multiple intervals close together. This leads me to believe that it's something in the AOSP rom's themselves and not bad hardware, too many people have it with the same symptoms. Yet sense works fine.
Head scratcher (to put it very lightly).

least I'm not alone on this one. can't be hardware otherwise same issues on sense. anything that's not custom like the kernel or aosp works fine

I agree that I don't think it's necessarily the hardware itself. I think it could be some sort of threshold parameter HTC sets that differs just slightly from CM9 (threshold in what exactly I don't know), but that some of us have hardware that gets tripped up on it and others don't.
I initially thought it was an issue with the CPU (I've always been using the stock speed and governor after the initial flash) but it doesn't matter if I'm doing something really light or really intensive. It also doesn't seem to matter if I'm using stock apps vs. apps I've downloaded either.
I have 2 days off from work so I'm going to flash back to the latest CounterShrike and grab a log cat every single time it freezes up. At the end of the two days, I'll compare every single instance and try to find some correlating event.
Hopefully I'll find something!

God Damn this is really annoying!
Just had to get that of my chest. I'm reading threads and scrolling every few seconds and I just had a few lockups in a row. It's so frustrating because every other aspect of the Rom works perfectly! I don't understand. No amount of kernels I try fixes the issue. Volts don't affect it, cpu speed doesn't affect it. It's enough to make me want to go back to sense just to not have to deal with it. I don't want to

yeah sadly I went back to sense. dark tranquility gives me phenomenal battery until the mean time with functional video chat. it's not often but I would like to give up video calls for aosp. even with everything I want removed from sense it's still bloated memory wise.

good luck with getting logs. I sent to most devs here and they were stumped

Got a replacement phone coming in the morning, we'll see if I experience the same issue or not.

I tried all sorts of things, and it happens to me.
Went back to Sense with included dsb kernel.
Funky kernel has the issue on sense for me though.

I didn't have much luck identifying something in the logs winston856 I'm considering getting a replacement as well. Let me know how you make out.

"3D freeze" - A very weird problem

I've been having a very strange, but rare, problem when running 3D games. It seems to only occur with certain kernels. I have no idea what else could be causing it. It has happened to me only three times since I got my Vibrant in Sept, but it's pretty scary.
What happens it's kinda hard to describe and even harder to reproduce. When I play any relatively heavy 3D game the phone performs flawlessly then randomly freezes completely. The soft-key lights still react to touch and turn off normally, but I'm unable to restart by holding down the power key for 15 seconds, leaving no choice but to do a battery pull. While this is happening, the screen (frozen in the game) starts to present very bright thin horizontal transparent white lines. These lines will keep appearing until they cover the whole screen. In the end it looks like the screen had lost all colors except shades of green and the rest has turned white.
This has never happened with 100% stock, stock+Voodoo kernels, Bali, or Overstock (didn't OC). It has happened, if I remember correctly, with Dragon (didn't OC), some other kernel I can't remember, and, just now, with DragonMODz SSSJ (OC'ed at a mere 1.1GHz). Maybe it's a problem with OC-able kernels only? Maybe it has to do with uncapped FPS? Maybe it's a simple problem that is all over the forum, but I couldn't find it?
Any help/suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I think it happened to me too but im not sure... what rom are you using??? And i'd suggest you to use trigger wit the kernel called BULLET flash those and your phone is goin to be super fast... i play 3D games on my phone and i dont have any issues so far so i'd suggest u to flash both kernel and rom and your phone should b faster....

I'm currently on Trigger with stock KB5+Voodoo kernel. I've tested it with hours of Asphalt 6 and Gangstar 2 and didn't have any problems so far. I'm still not sure what causes the problem, so I'm not gonna go adventuring with OCable kernels just yet.

[Q] Hardware or Driver Issue? Screen Hangs and Locks

My Vibrant is currently running stock KB5.
About every two days or so, I will be using the phone, and the colors on the screen will suddenly wash out, screen goes to max brightness, whatever is on the screen at the time stays up, and there will be two or three horizontal thin lines on the screen. The Menu, Home, Back, and Search keys all light up. The touchscreen and all buttons, including the power button, become unresponsive. Screen will not timeout. Only way to get out of it is to remove the battery and reinsert. If I am in the middle of a phone call, I am still able to continue speaking on the phone.....but can't hang up, adjust volume, etc.
I haven't tried any other ROMs since KB5 was released, so hard to say if another ROM would solve the issue. Don't flame me for sticking with KB5. I don't need my phone to do a lot....really just use it for calls, music player, Sirius, Google Maps/GPS, light web browsing. I'm not really opposed to running another ROM, I just found it to be a pain in the butt to be constantly switching ROMs as they are updated.
Anyone else experience this problem? Hardware or driver problem? If anyone else did have this problem, did switching to another ROM solve it for you?

Proximity sensor lag

I'm very frustrated with the proximity sensor lag. I can't stand the fact that it takes 2 seconds for the phone to realize that I'm looking at it trying to press end. Has anyone ever looked into a solution for this?
To me, it seems like the phone is going a sleep-like state. It also doesn't sound too complex to have a workaround that keeps the phone awake during convos or something that increases the sensitivity/timing of the proximity sensor.
Any ideas?
For the record, I found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105925&page=2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1270113
But aside from the build.prop trick, I think there's more that can be done.
It's almost impossible to get an answer to anything other than "OMGZ PHONE FUXXORED" on this forum...
I guess its a thing of trying different firmwares and ROMs to see if it can be fixed with different versions.I dont have lag in that department so give Omega a try and see if you notice any changes in the sensor. If your not happy then try another ROM.

[Q] 3VO Durability

Hello
I'm wondering just how durable an E3D is, namely the touch sensors inside it.
Recently I dropped the phone twice on a hard surface, and started noticing strange behaviours, firstly with the touch functions and secondly with the phone always freezing up.
Not always, but sometimes when typeing, it's just a mess, the capitalizer writes a letter, multi letter feature is inaccessible, basically none of the characters work like they were ment to. The only solution thus far is to lock and unlock the phone, which fixes the keyboard and the touch functionality.
Sometimes I can't unlock the phone because the ring moves 3 times shorter of a distance, opposed to when its working properly, and if so you can forget about dragging icons into the circle to answer a call, it just won't go in all the way.
Oh and the freezes, completely, none of the touch sensitive buttons or the screen responds, sometimes the screen is the only responsive part while the buttons are completely dead, a lock/unlock is needed to fix it short term, also the buttons led go out, becoming none responsive, sometimes the led is off, yet I still get a vibrational feedback (Have it enabled) So all these irregularities are new, it never happened before dropping the phone! The only touch sensitive related issue I had before, from time to time, was the unlock pattern gesture not tracing, instead of sticking to the first circle I begin at, it moves to the next I drag my finger over. (also fixable by relock/unlocking)
During this post the keyboard wasn't acting up thankfully, but its getting more and more irritating to lock and unlock the phone while typing a message to someone.
First I was suspecting a virus, or low memory causing this behaviour, but after thoroughly cleaning the phone and acquiring more memory (by closing apps) I was still having the problem.
Any idea how sensitive the components are if subject to repeated shock from a distance of 1.5m or 5ft?
What are my options here if the irregularities persist?

Don't know how durable it is...but I too face the unlock pattern issue sometimes, IMO it is a software issue .. Also if you take too much time to draw the pattern the screen goes off (even if you keep your fingers touched)......

Here's an update on this issue...
I've noticed that the upper left corner is the cause. How?
Well, in landscape mode on my homescreen, trying to pull the notification bar down (then from, the bottom left since were in landscape) will instead (without any animation) try to go to full homescreen view where I see all my 7 homescreen, but it does it in a zoom like feature, where the more I pull it to the side the more it will zoom in until final animation frame is reached LMAO.. I'm actually crying...
The sensor might be off, in that corner of the screen as dropped phone tend to land/hit the corners first...
I should ask an xda dev. to cook me up a "sensor status check" app to check if any of them are functioning incorrectly..
I don't know what more then that I could do?!..

Hey guys, thought I drop my final verdict on this issue.
As you all (who read this thread) knows, I was having an irritating problem with my E3D, namely the touch functionality of the screen was messed up, but only in a certain area, where I thought the sensors got discalibrated from the drops the Phone went through on hard surfaces.. I have used an app called "Check My Android" and the feature "MultiTouch" to identify the spot on the screen, where if I touched, a daemon took over my phone and started all kinds of wired behaviour such as item triggers on the other side of the screen and freezing, even slow mo zooming of the homescreen, one touch passive zooming of webpages and so forth..
Now with that app, I was certain that everything with it is not in order, but I didn't have the slightest clue on what to do about it. I ran across a comment about the built in utility diagnostics tool code for the Phone while browsing on U2B (YouTube), so by typing "*#*#3424#*#*" (which starts as you enter the lasts star) will basically allow you to test every aspect of functionality of your phone, where i also went for the screen draw test, and found myself strengthening what I already thought was the problem "an area on the screen messing everything else up" as I pressed within this area I found a straight line jump, from the "dead zone" to the bottom middle of the screen, as I was drawing circles, it drew a straight line there as i went over it with my finger every time. Than browsing on after that code's discovery, for "EVO 3D touchscreen problems" I ended up on a video offering similar problems..
Now the breakthrough or rather yet the solution came from that videos second and only comments, saying how "Disabling the ScreenLock of the Phone would fix that problem" and so it did!!! I'm not having any disturbance while typing, flipping pages touching that area or anything out of the ordinary, otherwise the Phone was almost unusable. It let's me to believe its a software miscoading flaw, but it wasn't always like that even though I used the screenlock since day one, so I'm not entirely sure what's up? other than its fixed...
I hope this fix can relieve others just as it did me
And the diagnostics code is also useful.. should be stickyd :]

It's screen issues only, no reboot problems yet..
I have calibrated the G-Sensor several times...
In another post someone replied, that its a grounding issue, and trying that once it did give a result, but then again, I'm not having that, unusable level of the issue I was having, after a hard reset.. so I'm not really sure weather this is a grounding problem, an app caused problem, all I know is that I still get an extra touch input on the screen, when I approach the upper left corner.. with every multi touch app I test..
Have you tried that app called touch screen booster ??? If not give it a shot. Set the multi touch point settings to two. Then apply then start the service and select run at boot. Then reboot and see if it helps any. Also a way of trouble shooting to find out if it is a rogue app is to Uninstall all of your apps. Then see if you still have the issue.

No i have not rooted, i was waiting for the official ICS before i root.
So I'm on the Stock... everything lol
This is my second 3D. The first one stopped responding to touches. Sprint replaced it for $30 even though I bought it from wirefly.
In my own experience, I had the exact same symptoms. Only difference is I didn't even drop my phone. After a few months of owning the phone it started to show the aforementioned symptoms occasionally. Eventually, it just got worse. After a lot of forum searching, google searching, etc, it turned out to be the digitizer that was faulty. I had tried everything from flashing different ROMs, Kernels etc before I was finally able to narrow it down to a hardware issue. The digitizer seems to be an issue for a lot of 3VOs from what I understand.
Luckily I had a friend who replaced the entire front housing of my phone so I wouldn't have to exchange it since I was unlocked on HBOOT 1.40. At the time I was afraid that, had I gotten it replaced, I'd have to deal with Hboot 1.50 and HTC's half ass unlock method. Either way, after that it was like a brand new phone but better cuz I didn't have to redownload apps, etc since the motherboard and software weren't touched at all.
Hope it all works out for ya... G'luck, brothah!

Shame I hadn't seen this thread sooner, I could have saved you a lot of time. I am on my 3rd 3d. Basically any fall which lands on the touchscreen will cause this problem.
What makes it worse, I was rooted with my last phone, and when it happened, I had to unroot before I could take it in for repairs. The touchscreen was so badly damaged with this problem, I could hardly do anything.
TL;DR get a case that will cover the screen and protect it from flat on touchscreen falls.

Screen Responsiveness???

I just got my SGS3 second hand two days ago and currently it runs great but I feel something is off. The glass on the screen (while smooth) feels rough when I swipe my finger to operate phone but other than that I dont feel the screen responsiveness / accuracy is where it should be. There is a slight delay that is starting to bug me because it doesnt feel as seamless as it should be. Its running stock XXBLG8 unooted. Could it be the stock firmware or kernel? Im hoping its a software issue that will be fixed with an update since I never had this issue before

uncheck power saving, that ought to solve your problem. imo even though cpu power saving claims to only affect the phone when under heavy usage...it gives a speed boost even in swiping between screens.
