I'm sooo close to caving in and replacing my GS2 for a 3, one of my very few pet peeves with the SG2 is how slow it wakes..
Seeing a lot of you guys came from GS2s I figured who best could answer my question of does the GS3 snap to life faster then your old GS2?
Also as long a you're answering what is the feature that most impressed you coming from the GS2? TIA.

Honestly, I find it does wake quicker than my i9100 did. Hopefully more will confirm as it may be subjective, but it tends to wake in under a second when hitting power button on mine anyway where my SGS2 was like 2 or 3 seconds when waking.
For me, you can really tell the higher resolution screen which was a plus for me. The LED light is incredible useful (no more waking phone to see if I have any messages). And the third was definitely LTE which is so much faster in my area than HSPA which seems to be really congested. Those three things made it worth the upgrade alone. All in all, maybe not a HUGE upgrade but a decent enough upgrade for myself

Nice... I know that screen is very nice.. I haven't seen anyone posting anything about the GS3 display staying on while your eyes are still on it, has this feature been included with the AT&T GS3???

Yes, it actually not your eyes it's detecting, but face. Love this feature, very useful when reading something or playing puzzle games.
The way it's working, it turns front camera on a few seconds before it dims the screen, if it detect a face, nothing happens, if no face near, it dims the screen for 5 seconds, then it checks again for a face, if found it, it turns up the brightness and resets screen timeout, otherwise shuts it off.
Wakeup time has a slight lag, but it's not annoying. However if you are using something like SetCPU and set profile to turn down CPU clock to lowest possible when screen is off, then it might not response to touches after wakeup for a few seconds.

Great to hear.. I just found there is a patch to let the hard home button wake the phone which is very cool...
Having a hard time justyifying replacing my GS2 after only 8 months but damn this GS3 looks sweet....
Not to mention I'm seriously thinking of putting my iPad (Gen 1) on eBay along with my GS2, the new Nexus 7 tablet for $199 looks just as inviting as the GS3

Just for the record, at least AT&T version has this feature by default, no need any patches.

This is enabled by default on the Verizon version as well, no patch needed.
Awesome, it'd be getting the AT&T version... Now I see the GS3 Red pre-orders have started and will be available on the 29th, my resistance it's getting weaker by the minute
How have the ROMs been so far for the GS3 (the AT&T versions)?

Hey guys,
I've been having an issue with AOSP roms where my display will just stop updating, Previously on one of Neo's ROM, and currently on CounterShrike 2.1. The screen doesn't turn itself off; it stays on, but freezes and doesn't change. I have to hit the power button to turn the display off and on again and it will work normally again for awhile.
It actually still accepts input when the display freezes. If I press the home button while it's frozen, it will be back on the home screen when I hit the power button off and on. If I'm in a list and scroll with my finger while it's frozen, it will be further down in the list when I hit the power button off and on.
I thought this was related to the proximity sensor bug but when I follow shrike's guide in the FAQ for setting up Chad's proximity sensor calibration, it already is showing 'FAR' when I first load the app and I don't need to adjust the high threshold. I think the sensor is fine.
Anyone have any other tips I can try? Everything works fine under CleanROM DE but AOSP is so much faster I'd really like to try and nail the issue down.
Thanks!
EDIT: I've attached a logcat. Two times I recorded the timestamp when it frozen, around 00:45 and 01:11. But I don't really know what to be looking for in the log cat.
thank god I'm not alone with this! I get this crap with any aosp based rom. I sent logcats to a few and nobody can't figure it out yet. sometimes it freezes but the display bleeds and fades itself off simultaneously
This is just an accepted problem with any AOSP ROM.
If you read the OPs they all mention graphics issues.
If you have been following the JellyBean stuff, they can't get any graphics to work at all.

Maybe unrelated, but I have recently discovered that if my fingers are even the tiniest bit wet or sweaty, my touch screen completely freaks out and becomes impossible to use. The only way to fix it is to turn the screen off, and turn it back on.

Yeah, I sorta agree.. but I never had noticed it until I started using CM9 ROMS.
Actually though, ever since the ICS leaks something has been a little off about the Rezound touch screen, even on Sense ROMs..
Sometimes when you swipe horizontally one direction quickly, it starts to go and then jerks back and actually scrolls the other way. Worked fine in GB for the 2 months I ever used it on this device....

This is true. I've stated this issue months back, sweat or a drop of liquid makes our screen act funny.

freezing occurs regardless, no moisture involved
What cpu governor and i/o scheduler are you using, do you know?
I've noticed freezes/slow response with either noop or deadline i/o scheduler. The powersave governor or turning cpu speed down too far can also cause freezing.
Occasional Graphical flickering in GUI elements does seem to be an issue with cm roms on multiple devices. I've had success turning on settings - developer - force gpu rendering to reduce flickering, YMMV.

I forget exacts but it's with whatever is default when first flashed. the logcats at the time didn't mention anything about the CPU itself but graphics and HDMI errors with different invalid sound outputs as well
I experience this on multiple AOSP rom's! My phone was fine with sense based rom's but AOSP freezes. Sometimes it doesn't freeze at all, sometimes it's multiple intervals close together. This leads me to believe that it's something in the AOSP rom's themselves and not bad hardware, too many people have it with the same symptoms. Yet sense works fine.
Head scratcher (to put it very lightly).
least I'm not alone on this one. can't be hardware otherwise same issues on sense. anything that's not custom like the kernel or aosp works fine
I agree that I don't think it's necessarily the hardware itself. I think it could be some sort of threshold parameter HTC sets that differs just slightly from CM9 (threshold in what exactly I don't know), but that some of us have hardware that gets tripped up on it and others don't.
I initially thought it was an issue with the CPU (I've always been using the stock speed and governor after the initial flash) but it doesn't matter if I'm doing something really light or really intensive. It also doesn't seem to matter if I'm using stock apps vs. apps I've downloaded either.
I have 2 days off from work so I'm going to flash back to the latest CounterShrike and grab a log cat every single time it freezes up. At the end of the two days, I'll compare every single instance and try to find some correlating event.
Hopefully I'll find something!
God Damn this is really annoying!
Just had to get that of my chest. I'm reading threads and scrolling every few seconds and I just had a few lockups in a row. It's so frustrating because every other aspect of the Rom works perfectly! I don't understand. No amount of kernels I try fixes the issue. Volts don't affect it, cpu speed doesn't affect it. It's enough to make me want to go back to sense just to not have to deal with it. I don't want to

yeah sadly I went back to sense. dark tranquility gives me phenomenal battery until the mean time with functional video chat. it's not often but I would like to give up video calls for aosp. even with everything I want removed from sense it's still bloated memory wise.
good luck with getting logs. I sent to most devs here and they were stumped
Got a replacement phone coming in the morning, we'll see if I experience the same issue or not.
I tried all sorts of things, and it happens to me.
Went back to Sense with included dsb kernel.
Funky kernel has the issue on sense for me though.

Bump for same issue.
Phone is in perfect condition never dropped and has always been in a case. Like OP the buttons randomly stopped working, I have to press each one at least 20 times to get it to work once sometimes up to 50 times.
I installed an app with a back and home button but can only use the home since i'm not rooted.
Still under warranty so may get a replacement, unless someone knows what to do.
If you're literally clicking it 50 times then you probably have a n issue with your phone but if it just laggs a little bit, make sure you have a stable rom and a stable kernel and that you arent choosing a laggy governor or underclocking your phone too much
If you turn your display up 100% and put your rezzy in a dark room, you will see a gap at the bottom of the glass and phone housing. Dirt, dust, and crapola can get down in there.....and yes, can eventually cause issues. Before you doubt this, call BigRed and ask how many have been returned because of this......
My last rezzy i took apart a applied a thin silicone to create a seal around the housing. Never had an issue, and fixed the light seep issue
But it is way easier to just backup your junk and flash a different rom to troubleshoot!

I have had my phone since the summer time and flashed multiple ROMS/kernels and never had an issue with the vibration. I was using Task650/ktoonsez 4.1.2 12.2.2012 with Fluxxi 4.3.3 for some months now.
Yesterday I lost almost all intensity to my vibrate. I can not feel it when typing in swype or touching the capacitive buttons. I downloaded a vibrate app and can feel it although it is very soft.
I have increased the intensity in Device options/Haptic and using extweaks.
I have cleared all cache/dalvik. I have flashed a new rom (Helly bean). Nothing works. Hopefully this is not a hardware issue but it is looking that way. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I try flashing to stock?
That's what I would do,if only to eliminate the possibility of it being hardware related.

Same thing on stock. I have also noticed that auto-rotation is wonky. Will rotate from portrait to landscape but not from landscape to portrait. Guess I will have to contact samsung.
Just want to update for anyone else that has a similar issue. I was able to fix the problem with vibration by violently smacking the phone on its side against my hand a couple times. Vibration is much stronger now, almost as strong as it was before. Also re-calibrating my accelerometer after this fixed auto-rotation. Yay!
.....?.....violently smacking....seems legit
Had the Zenfone 9 for a little while and thought I'd share some thoughts. Been using the device for as my main machine for basic work (email, document writing, ssh/remote management, video calling) and personal applications (social media, reading, watching videos, not gaming). Here's been my experience.
Size/Screen
despite people focusing on how compact the phone is it doesn't feel that small in a good way (especially compared to the iPhone mini). Screen size does not interfere with any applications I've used the phone for, even reading which I had some worries about before purchase. The biggest downside of the compact size I ran into was the typing experience, but that becomes much better with a keyboard that has good gesture support and some aggressive autocorrect. Overall it feels great in the hand as someone with large hands.
Visually the screen is sharp, has great viewing angles, and the brightness is good even for outdoor use in direct sunlight. I can't say much for the refresh rate since I keep it on 60 but I will say the DC dimming works a charm even if it's only available on 60 Hz mode. Touch is responsive and i haven't experienced any touch jitters, but the palm rejection is bad enough that I'd call the phone unusable without a case if you tend to hold the phone like I do.
Gesture Controll
As a long-time Oneplus user I do miss the 3 way switch for the ringer, but have found a compromise using the press and hold on the power button as a toggle between modes which has been working well for me. The other smart key functionality of swiping on the power button I've turned off as it's way too easy to accidentally activate when held in the right hand.
The screen off gestures for media control which I enjoyed on Oneplus are here in the Asus but are currently broken, the "ll" pause gesture instead reading out the time and not pausing the video for some reason, when that's fixed at least they are all very responsive.
The back double tap gesture is very inconsistent, I keep it on for the flashlight and haven't had any issues with false activations, but it often takes a few tries to activate.
Battery/Charging
Battery life has been good, getting through a day of heavy use without a problem on 60Hz mode. Charging is fast but does heat up the phone, I've kept mine on ultra steady charge mode which slows down charging to dispel heat and battery longevity issues (around 10W, normal steady charge is around 13W). The charger that came with the device is a C to C charger with a cable that works for data and power.
Performance
I'm not a mobile gamer so I've yet to push the processor in any meaningful way, badly optimized apps that I have had issues with in the past all work smoothly. Video playback/acceleration have been smooth as well as processing large file transfers. Boot up and restart times are very snappy.
Networking/Connectivity
No issues with my Canadian SIM, dual sim works fine. WiFi hasn't had problems with my WiFi 5 and 6 Routers even in dual channel mode which works seamlessly on dual channel networks connecting in both bands. 5G isn't widespread in my area so i haven't had a chance to test it, but 4G+ works as expected. On the physical ports side I have only been able to get USB 2 speeds out of the USB C port for file transfers which isn't really an issue for my use and the headphone jack packs a punch running my DT-770 80 ohms without a problem.
Cameras
They're definitely cameras, I'm not really a camera guy so I wouldn't know what to look for. I haven't had any noticable issues, photos do take a bit longer than my previous phones from pressing the button to the photo being taken but I assume that's because there's a lot more photo processing going on with newer phones. The back lenses do need to be wiped off most of the time since at least for me my fingers tend to naturally rest on them. Front camera also hasn't given me any issues but I'm not a huge fan of the metal ring inside which makes the hole punch more noticeable.
ZenUI
Played around with the launcher a bit before switching off of it, seems like a good relatively stock Android experience with some quality of life improvements. Hasn't given me a reason to switch away from Niagra launcher though (which works great on this device). The pull down menu looks good but could use a bit more in the way of customizability, notifications are a bit intrusive on the smaller screen but the smaller notifications option fixes that pretty well in exchange for needing to pull down the notification shade for quick access. Some other small gripes are that the bar underneath the keyboard is unable to be turned off is quite large relative to the screen height and in the activities view the app icons are above the apps which makes things like locking apps a bit difficult one handed.
Overall
This phone is definitely a purchase I don't regret, all the issues I've had thus far are definitely fixable through updates. I haven't had any of the hardware issues I've heard others mention like rattly volume buttons. Hopefully it does well enough for Asus to consider giving it longer support and the attention it needs to get its minor current issues fixed, or at least well enough to get decent support for third party roms. The price even importing the device from HK to Canada is very competitive for what you get. If there as any benchmarks people want me to run or questions they have about the device I'll keep an eye on the responses. Also if anyone has fixes for the issues mentioned I'm all ears (palm rejection, media control, etc...)
Thank you for the nice review.
I'm still waiting for my piece.
I want to ask you, since you are using 3rd launcher, I wonder if you are using gestures or navigation bar?
Purchased from mi4canada, came quick via DHL from HK and at a good price by Canadian import standards. It's unclear when the device will officially make its way to Canada, the zenfone 8 took a long while.

So my hope for Nova Launcher lives on! There was a glitch on all new mobile phones since A11. It only worked like a miracle on a couple of phones. I'm glad that Zenfone is one of them. Another reason for even greater joy.

Just wanted to add from my experience. I've been using nova launcher prime since I got the phone (over a week ago). And I have noticed that rarley but sometimes when you press the home button or unlock the screen you will get a blank screen showing only the wallpaper and only after you press the home button for a second time will the home screen actually load.
FYI I am using the navigation bar (buttons) and not the gesture one (I just hate the incompatibility with a lot of swipe supported apps e.g. Gmail, Solid Explorer etc ) so take it with a grain of salt if you use gesture you might not encounter this problem.
I have also encountered some other minor bugs but overall I am very pleased with the phone coming from my Galaxy S10.

Like on other phones when using third-party launchers there is definitely a slight delay (a second or so) when using the home gesture until the launcher becomes responsive and starts accepting input.

Haven't experienced this issue with Niagra after over a week of use now (or on previous phones I've put it on), may be an issue with your launcher. A second delay would be very noticable.
Cheers for the review - very helpful as am considering getting one.
Looking around at the benchmarks from different reviews, the scores vary quite a bit. It looks like it depends on which performance mode it's in - high performance mode vs dynamic mode, and according to Anandtech the Zenfone 8's performance would also change depending on which refresh rate you had it in. But many reviewers haven't said what mode or refresh rate they've been using.
Could you perhaps run the Jetstream 2.0 benchmark (opens and runs in the website) and/or PCMark Work 3.0 (play store) in dynamic performance mode? In 120hz would be fantastic or in 60hz would still be good either.
It's a bit of pain and would take your time so perfectly understandable if you don't want to, so would like to say thanks for the review anyway!
@Plasmac
All of these on 120Hz, no performance modes enabled (manually disabled for pcmark which triggered an automatic one)
Jetstream 2: 128.004
Pcmark work 3.0: 16371
Geekbench 5: 1294/4075

Thank you very much for doing all those. It's really appreciated.
The non-performance mode isn't reducing the performance by much at all. That settles it for me then, the Anandtech review of the 8 put me off, but it seems tsmc 4nm has allowed good performance and decent battery life, so the 9 it is.

There’s a lot to like about the way the Zenfone 9 looks. The obvious starting place is the size – thanks to using a small 5.9in display this is a small phone by modern standards, and at 169g it’s also impressively lightweight.
At 9.1mm thick it’s not the thinnest phone around, but you’d certainly not call it chunky, and that very slight extra thickness feels irrelevant once you factor in how compact the phone is overall.

Sadly didn't work either. But from what I've read it's Google's fault and may have been fixed with A13, so maybe there's hope for the Z9 too
